I was really excited to try this Pakistani restaurant but we were let down by the additional charges, below average service and average food. I have travelled to many countries and eat out often. I have never been to a restaurant that doesn't offer you water. They only have bottle water for sale. These types of things are a bad reflection on the Pakistani people. Really good food and great hospitality/ service! I really like their lamb chops that are the softest. My family tried palak paneer (awesome), chicken tikka (Lahori) which they highly recommended and was fantastic! I requested for a tandoori roti with butter and it was v soft ! The food and service can really vary depending on the day. It's always packed in the evenings. A female manager present there is very unprofessional even though my order was wrong which she admitted to because she failed to write chicken or beef and we wanted beef which we expressed repeatedly and we were served chicken instead of replacing our order she tapped on my shoulder saying it's okay, next time you can have beef etc + charged us for it as well. We didn't eat it because that's not what we wanted. (extremely unprofessional) and don't tap people on the shoulder it's rude. We are paying for the food and we demand to be treated with respect. We have usually packed our food in the past because the ambience appears unsanitary with dirty tables and the staff not cleaning them fast enough. We were regular customers of Tabaq and our experience each time was decent. We even placed bulk orders for kebabs and naan. Unfortunately, our experience today was absolutely terrible. Not sure what went wrong but understandably it was a busy Friday night, however, having to wait over an hour for our order placed via Grubhub was absurd. Grubhub indicated our order was ready at 7:04 pm, went in and they said 30 minutes more. Went back in after 30 minutes to only stand there and wait until 8:15 pm to finally receive our food. It gets worse, not only was our order ready late, the front counter staff was rude and completely unprofessional. Standing there and waiting for our Grubhub order while customers came after us, placed orders and left with food before us. Only reason our order was not prioritized was because it was a Grubhub order? If you can't handle such orders, please don't accept the order initially. To top it off, came home with our takeout to have undercooked chicken seekh kebabs. So much liquid accumulation in the container, I can only assume they were rushed and undercooked. Terrible service. Never brought us tea the food took over 30 minutes to arrive and they brought it out without the bread to eat with. By the time we were able to eat everything was cold. There is a $2 fee to use credit card. Food wasn't great. Look no further if you are looking for authentic lip smacking, finger licking Pakistani cuisine. We were visiting from out of town on Father's Day and my wife recommended this restaurant for lunch. Our server Farooq was such a nice guy, he made good recommendations and was attentive and accommodating. We ordered: Tandoor menu : The grilled meat platter- comes with behari kebab, lamp chops, malai kebab, seekh kebab etc. Lamb Chops were incredibly delicious a must try. We had ordered mutton karahi and mutton Biryani but since they had a ton of take out orders they ran out of both and we were recommended chicken korma and chicken biryani instead. Me and my sister were in the Edison area and decided to try out Tabaq for lunch. Walking into the main seating area the decor and overall construction was very generic and somewhat in disrepair. Overall, I didn't get the vibe that this was the cleanest of restaurants. However, I really don't put too much of the above as factor, as I've enjoyed food from restaurants in NYC whose cleanliness would make one raise an eyebrow. We both opted out of the buffet (neither of us like buffets, as we prefer quality vs. quantity) choosing to order from the regular menu. We started with the Dahi Bada Chaat which we both enjoyed. The wonderfully complex sauce was a combination of sweet, tart, savory, and rich. Researching the ingredients of this sauce revealed varied components like coriander, cumin, pomegranate, and tamarind; all combined with yogurt. The dumpling (Bada) was delicious as well; it being perfectly textured to absorb all of that yummy sauce. To get a taste of everything, I chose Tabaq's mixed grill comprised of chicken seekh, chicken tikka, Hariyali chicken tikka, and lamb chops. Chicken Seekh 3.5/5.0: A solid version of this kebab, it was cooked well and had good flavor. There was a distinct garlic and Garam Masala flavor. Chicken Tikka 2.5/5.0: Pretty average at best. The chicken pieces were seasoned nicely but overcooked. The chicken was a tad dry and while I enjoy the char flavor from the grill, these chicken pieces crossed the border into being burnt, imparting an unpleasant acrid taste. Hariyali Chicken Tikka 4.0/5.0: This green tinged kebab had the most interesting flavors. A quick search showed the seasonings comprised primarily of coriander, fenugreek, and mint (explaining the green hue) which all combined for excellent flavor. Lamb Chops 3.0/5.0: I was really looking forward to the lamb chops after reading a lot of positive reviews. However, I found them to be ordinary. I felt they needed more seasoning, especially considering the chops were lean and lacking any delicious lamb fat to compensate. My sister ordered the Chicken Karahi and enjoyed it a lot. The chicken pieces were varied cuts of both dark and white meat, all very juicy and tender. She remarked on how much she enjoyed the gravy with its mild level of heat and spice wherein she was able to taste cumin, a lot of fresh ginger, and tumeric. Last but not least was the spectacular Roghni Naan bread! It was so comparable to the bread ubiquitous to Uzbek cuisine, which is also sometimes referred to as Naan. The bread crust was perfectly crisp, and the sesame studded center of the bread was moist, fluffy, and warm. The sesame seeds must have released some of their oil during the baking process which just added to the deliciousness of the bread. I had written a very appreciative review 7 months ago, after my first ever visit to Tabaq. At that time i had overlooked a few things giving it a benefit of the doubt since businesses were resuming after covid shut down and food was good, which still is. But service is still struggling, i have been to this place for over 10 times since then and servers still don't understand if appetizers and main course should be served sequentially or at the same time. There is no adherence to covid guidelines. Even tables with 'closed' sign are occupied. When pointed out the concern to a server, he replied. It's more of a take out place or if you're really hungry then a good place for a quick bite. It's ok but don't expect much. Food: They have a pretty extensive menu. Everything from Pakistani to Indian, from halal to vegetarian and desserts. However, the food is mediocre. We ordered the karhai chicken and though it looked good, it tasted meh. There was no flavor and way too many bones in it. We didn't try any vegetarian food but it didn't look appetizing. For someone wondering if the vegetarian food is"kosher", they keep it separate. Service: They get busy, but are fairly quick given everything is premade. The place has a big parking lot too. Price: I think the place is to expensive for what they offer. One of the best kebab restaurants in Oak tree. Shalimar used to be the leader in this space but has lost that place long back. This restaurant offers excellent beef behari kebabs. Also other platters are equally tasty. Must try the lamb chops and nuns. Recently they opened a banquet hall also. Service is quite fast. Sometime it takes time as it get lot of kebab lovers. Ambiance is quite good but decors are little old. But after tasting the good kebabs rest all are not that important. read more

We went to have dinner in the area at another Pakistani restaurant, but came across Tabaq as an option when we were doing a search and man am I glad this place popped up on my search. First off, the place is not super huge. If I counted correctly, there are about 12 - 15 tables for dine in, but let that not deter you from visiting this restaurant. We are actually from MD area and were in NJ visiting. MD has some decent Pakistani food options, but they are not up to the actual Pakistani standard in terms of taste. We ordered Chapli Kabab and Bihari Kabab from the Tabaq menu and the first bite from each one of them took me back to Pakistan. Both of the kababs were, of course, fresh made, and they tasted better than anything I have had in MD area. Bihari kabab was a tad bit high on salt, but that could just be me since my salt intake is a bit on the low side when it comes to kababs. But both of them were perfectly marinated and cooked. I was able to break the Bihari kakab with naan with almost zero effort. I am so glad we found this place and whenever I am going back to Edison area, I will certainly be paying them another visit. I am also glad I do not live close by Tabaq, or I would be in trouble for eating there much more frequently. (P.S. This is a multi-platform review. I haven't had Pakistani food this good since I was literally in Pakistan. No, I'm serious. Tabaq gets how it's supposed to be done, and does it wonderfully. The goat kadahi was exactly as I remember it, the chicken seekh kebab was as juicy as if it was made with lamb, and even the paneer makhni had a spiciness to it that set it apart from normal BIR style. It's worth the drive, wherever you're driving from. read more

I've never heard of this restaurant, nor have I ever seen it. From the exterior, it's a very small shop on Oak Tree Road. I ordered the Paneer Makhani and Cheese Naan Bread along with a yogurt-based chutney. This was a perfect meal for approximately $10. The paneer makhani was creamy and super delicious. The perfect balance of spiciness and a slight sweetness was incredible. The gravy was buttery with a creamy tomato base. The chunks of paneer were excellent and not overly cooked. The cheese naan was superb because it was heavily stuffed with gooey mozzarella cheese and glazed with butter. The yogurt-based chutney accompanied the paneer Makhani very well because it calms the taste buds from the spiciness. At a typical restaurant, they would ask you if you'd like something to drink first, so that we would have a little bit of extra time to decide what we want. Tried to get someone's attention but was being ignored. We would've finished all of our food but we did not want to order anything else...so I'm going to go home and make my own rice and warm up some Trader Joe's garlic Naan lol... On a cold freezing night, we were craving grilled and tandoori food and the yelp reviews suggested Tabaq. It was late in the night, but I was very happy to find out Tabaq is open until midnight! We got the table pretty quick but wait for the food after placing the order felt like eternity. The server was nice, but overall the place was pretty casual. The seating is a little awkward, feels more like sitting in a dorm dining hall rather than a restaurant We had Chicken Behari ( or Bihari), Chicken Jalfrezi and Roti / Naan. Chicken Bihari was excellent as promised by other yelpers. Chicken Jalfrezi was a total disappointment. Roti and naan were average, like any other Indian restaurant in US. A complimentary salad and raita were served. Salad was mostly lettuce and one or two slices of tomato,so not really a south asian salad. Had Chapli kabab and Chicken Biryani in another visit and they were decent. Will definitely go again if in the area, but mostly for appetizers. read more

We visited Tabaq Pakistani restaurant in New Jersey after reading yelp reviews. Despite the long weekend rush, the staff was very accommodating. When we mentioned we had traveled from Fairfax, they quickly found us a table. The service was outstanding and the staff was friendly. The food was delicious too. Big props to this restaurant for understanding our long journey from Fairfax and for their excellent service and food, especially since I was with two kids. Great place to get chicken bihari and also other favorites like their chicken biryani. They have a buffet on the weekend that is quite good as well. They change up the menu items too so two different buffet visits won't be the same. For what it is it's worth the trip. Just make sure to temper your expectations when it comes to the traditional restaurant setting. The place feels like a cafeteria and isn't exactly a 5 star setting.
