    Pork, rice and beans

First time at Taberna Grill. Came here for lunch, their lunch specials look very good. Had the pork, rice and beans and it was delicious. Food tasted great and just like if it was homemade.

I use to go to Valencia but found this little gem and saw that they serve the same food but to me it's better and the pricing is better. The service is friendly and family oriented. It's the type of place that after a few visits they become friends.

Regular salad, kind of small for 2 people

I come here on the regular cause of its proximity to my job. I come for lunch and to watch champions league soccer matches. They have a fixed menu and the daily specials menu. I rarely order anything from the fixed menu and always try something different on the special menu. On Saturdays always order the caldo verde soup. You won't be dissatisfied. It's only available sat. It's a kale soup. If you want a good sandwich get the chivito, although its native to Uruguay it's awesome. Steak, ham, fried egg, peppers onions cheese, and comes with fries. It's not the menu just ask for it. Their steaks and chickens are typically consistent and good you can always ask for different sides unless I get special treatment since I'm there all the time. If the grilled swordfish is ever available on the specials menu get it! Around lunch time it's loud with a bunch of blue collar Portuguese dudes yelling about soccer and work. It's still a good time

We started with some olives and bread, which came out warm, but was hard because it was almost burnt. It was still tasty once I spread some butter on it. I ordered the octopus a lagareiro. It came with onions, peppers, baked potatoes and broccoli rabe. It was soooo good! A 10/10. The octopus was cooked perfectly and was a healthy amount. I will definitely go back just for this meal. My guy got the salmon steak cut. It was cooked perfectly. Overall it was good meal and great service. I can't wait to go back for the octopus!

I did not dine in I ordered for pick up. I ordered 2 trays for my family to eat and paid $50. (Which is fine). What's not fine is I walk in to pick it up, spoke to the lady, gave her the name, and she said ok and charges me. Then she walks away and I'm waiting thinking she is going to get it or maybe it's not entirely ready yet. After about 10 mins 4 other people come in and speak with another lady pay and grab their food. FINALLY the other girl noticed me and asked the name again and meanwhile it was sitting there ready the whole time. She gives me the food and I asked if there was hot sauce in the bag and she said yes. I checked because I had past experiences there where they don't put any. So I open the bag and there is 2 hot sauces. I kindly asked her for some extra because there is 2 big trays and 5 of us eating and we would all like some hot sauce. She replies "no" you only get 1 hot sauce per tray. (Apparently that's the policy there) Please explain how 1 little tiny ass hot sauce is going to do anything to a big tray of food.. And please explain how we are supposed to split it 5 ways!!! I left already mad. I get home and open the bag and there's a little bag in the main bag. I open it and there's 1 little tiny piece of bread. 1 ROLL!!!! I guess we have to split that 5 ways too. I have never went to a restaurant where the owner is that CHEAP!! Do you not try to make your customers happy?!! Are you really ok with losing customers for something so little?? I honestly feel bad for you. Are times that hard?!!! This is not the first time this has happened to me at Algarve and I spoke to many others that feel the same way.. and honestly shame on me for even going back again tonight. I should have known better. You are losing business and will continue to if you don't change your ways! You already lost me and a bunch of others that I know of already and none of us will be back. Bad business is what I call it. The food is average so to be cheap on top of it is worse. Anyone reading this if you are debating where to go there is a place down the street called Valenca where they treat you better. You ask for hot sauce and they give you handfuls of it. You ask for bread and they give you 10 rolls. They make sure they give you plates and forks and knives even if you don't ask for it and to top it off they open your food up to show you it before packing it just to make sure everything is perfect. And the food... way better. The restaurant business is a hustle and a competition and as of now Algarve, you're in last place. Once again.... You lost another customer. SMH

15 years later- we're still having fun trying new Portuguese restaurants in and around Newark…read more Stopped here for lunch on a Saturday and it was bustling with customers, many, I'm sure were regulars. We sat at the bar and were greeted right away by the bartender. There were so many options on the menu in addition to the specials that it made it difficult to make a decision but we opted for the vegetable soup, a garden salad and a pork loin, shrimp & sausage combo and of course, the obligatory pitcher of sangria. Everything was delicious. The soup instantly made you feel like somebody's grandma slow cooked it for hours. The simple garden salad was dressed perfectly. The complimentary bread was tasty as only Portuguese rolls seem to be. The pork was full of flavor as was the shrimp. It's served on a bed of fries that soaked up all of the meat juices nicely. There was a little smattering of pickled vegetables on top. We leisurely enjoyed our meal, finishing our sangria pitcher and topping off the whole experience with some type of potent appertif. Great meal, great prices, great ambiance.

The bitoque and carne de porco alentejana are also very good. Not crazy about the bbq chicken but it's not terrible, just not my thing. Place is simple, service is good and the drinks are good. Parking sucks but it's worth it in my opinion. Try it out!

But I found Long Ave BBQ on a Yelp search and on a trip back on I-78, I took a detour through Hillside to pick up dinner. The place reminds me of all the hole-in-the-wall places in the Ironbound with stainless steel covering everything, a brick pit charcoal grill and a giant ventilation hood sucking all the smoke up through the chimney and the whole neighborhood smells like BBQ. One innovation I see is that they use a motorized grill basket system that's constantly turning a bunch of grill baskets with chicken & ribs sandwiched in them. After perusing the menu, I order the Parrillada Portuguesa, a huge family meal for 6 people, that'll last my little family of 3 for 3 days. The PP comes with grilled chicken breast, a half chicken, pork ribs & cross sliced beef short ribs (Korean LA Kalbi style). The slices of chicken breast are too dry and with not a lot of flavor, but the pork ribs have that Ironbound Portuguese charcoal flavor I miss so much (even though a few ribs were a little tough to chew). The BBQ half chicken is alright, but not as much flavor as Peruvian rotisserie style and the short ribs are not as good as Korean style. I think they should do whole beef ribs Southern style, low and slow or even a whole beef brisket would be great. The Parrillada comes with 2 side dishes that are not shy by any means. You get an aluminum tray filled with 1/2 french fries and 1/2 rice that will be enough for 3 meals also! Next time, I would come back just for a full rack of the pork ribs, but I hope that the pitmaster doesn't overcook it.
