We ordered the family combo for takeout, and it was delicious! There was enough food for 4 people, and it was piping hot.

I really miss Portuguese BBQ in NJ from when I used to work in Newark, but rarely come out this way much anymore. BBQ joints dotted the landscape in the Ironbound neighborhood. But I found Long Ave BBQ on a Yelp search and on a trip back on I-78, I took a detour through Hillside to pick up dinner. The place reminds me of all the hole-in-the-wall places in the Ironbound with stainless steel covering everything, a brick pit charcoal grill and a giant ventilation hood sucking all the smoke up through the chimney and the whole neighborhood smells like BBQ. One innovation I see is that they use a motorized grill basket system that's constantly turning a bunch of grill baskets with chicken & ribs sandwiched in them. After perusing the menu, I order the Parrillada Portuguesa, a huge family meal for 6 people, that'll last my little family of 3 for 3 days. The PP comes with grilled chicken breast, a half chicken, pork ribs & cross sliced beef short ribs (Korean LA Kalbi style). The slices of chicken breast are too dry and with not a lot of flavor, but the pork ribs have that Ironbound Portuguese charcoal flavor I miss so much (even though a few ribs were a little tough to chew). The BBQ half chicken is alright, but not as much flavor as Peruvian rotisserie style and the short ribs are not as good as Korean style. I think they should do whole beef ribs Southern style, low and slow or even a whole beef brisket would be great. The Parrillada comes with 2 side dishes that are not shy by any means. You get an aluminum tray filled with 1/2 french fries and 1/2 rice that will be enough for 3 meals also! Next time, I would come back just for a full rack of the pork ribs, but I hope that the pitmaster doesn't overcook it. read more

Hole in the wall bbq place with 4 tables inside. Staff was friendly and portions are Huge!!! Got the picanha with fries and broccoli and I only finished half. This was 3 pieces of steak and enough food for 2. Steak was flavorful and tender and the strip of fat on the picanha is excellent. No frills but an excellent meal. read more

The first time I went to this place the food was good but my second and third visit the service and food were not so nice. First off, they tell the customer over the phone one price but wait till you get there to charge some sort of extra tax or service fee. When I tried to politely let the young lady at the counter (who i can only guess is family of some sort to the the owner) know that they should make that clear to the customer up front. I was given rolled eyes and minimal response. My third visit was worse. When I received my food, brought it home, and tasted it the vegetables tasted tangy as if they were sour and they tried to cover it up by cooking them the with vinegar. When I called and complained. I believe I spoke with the owner who made the excuse that the chef was new and admitted that she may have cooked the veggies in vinegar. I asked if I could have at least half of my money back since I couldn't eat half my meal, she agreed but acted as if she couldn't find my card in the system. I ended up getting 5 funky a$$ dollars back from my 50 some odd dollar meal. I'm not usually the type to write reviews and honestly love supporting small minority owned buisness but at this point I'LL NEVER PATRONIZE THIS PLACE AGAIN AND NIETHER SHOULD ANYONE ELSE. read more

You can smell the deliciousness in the air in front of this place. No frills kinda place where many locals visit and get takeout. We got a rack of pork ribs and a whole chicken with rice and fries. A diamond in the rough hole in the wall. Came here for dinner before a flight. Honestly i didnt expect the place to impress me but it did. The place works mostly for takeout even without the COVID restrictions but they have 3 tables to sit people at it works. Been to this huddle gem a couple of times, food is always consistent. You can smell the bbq from down the street. If the smell doesn't make you salivate and jump with joy inside, then you're lying. We've had the chicken, beef ribs, pork ribs, and pork cubes. All is served with rice and fries. I found that no matter how many times different Portuguese bbq locations I've been to, the fries are always soggy. Most likely due to the fact they always cover everything in foil so they end up steamed instead. Easy fix is to just throw them into my air fryer. A little more work for takeout, but it's worth it. As with all Portuguese bbq, portions are huge and can easily feed 3-4 people. We've had lots of rice and fries left over, which served as sides for the next couple of dinners. read more

The space is small, but this is more of a takeout place. The portions are large and therefore you don't need to make many orders and the food is great. The place is small with a few tables, the smell was good so we ordered a small portion BBQ ribs and an order of House special Pinchado. Portions are huge. A little too much rice for my liking but you definitely get your money's worth. The fries are as fresh as you can get, cut before your eyes. I'm always looking for good Portuguese BBQ and I happened to stumble across this place on my way home from the city. Im so glad we stopped to give it a try. Let me start by saying it may not look like much from the outside and seating may be limited but please don't let that stop you from giving this place a try. We were lucky to wait just a few minutes for a table but it seemed like they have a lot of regulars who call in for take out orders. The owner Danny and all the staff were super friendly and Very personable which made the experience even better. Well, it is one of these small places, hidden but that offer great service. I arrived almost at the end of the day and the person in charge of the place gave me his suggestions, and they were right. The chicken was juicy and crunchy, if you are looking for industrial potatoes, this is not your place, because these potatoes are saucepans seasoned with sea salt and fried at a low temperature. The touch of saffron and achiote in the rice is appreciated. In general, it is a place to buy food from all over the house because the service brings a lot of meat, rice and potatoes. On my way back home from Newark Airport, we decided to stop by this little local spot for Portuguese BBQ. Mostly a takeout restaurant, the restaurant offers four small tables for dine in. We decided to sit down and enjoy our meal there rather than taking it to go. The tables offer all the condiments you might want (hot sauce, ketchup, etc). I love the sour/vinegar-y Portuguese hot sauce. It's my favorite to put on everything! We ordered the full order of beef short ribs (four ribs, rice, and beans) ($18), a NY strip steak with rice and beans ($13), and a half order of pork ribs with rice and beans (I think $8-$10ish?). The owner, Danny, was very kind to offer us some fries to munch on while we were waiting. The food came promptly and piping hot and cooked to perfection. Danny asked how we liked the steak cooked to which we said medium rare. The strip steak was perfectly medium rare; we loved this! For the amount of meat/food you get and the pricing, you just can't beat it! This is a cash only business so definitely come prepared! There are a good deal of Portuguese places in the nearby area/towns but this is definitely now added permanently to my list of favorites! Really great Churrasqueira! Family owned and managed. I have not eaten in, I usually do take out, but they do offer lots of space if you want to eat in. I usually get the tray with yellow rice, fries, chicken and ribs for less than $20 bucks. It can feed between 2-3 people per tray. Pork cubes are also delicious. Staff is always nice and my food is always ready when I call ahead of time, which is a great time saver. Beware they only take cash so come prepare! read more

I can't say enough about this place. Little cozzy restaurant served by the owners super friendly. The food was incredible, they offer me a sample of the "Special of the day" which was beef stew with veggies and mushed potatoes...home made with REAL potatoes! He didn't even want me to pay for it. Only a 10 minute drive away from my hotel, It was a simple drive. They don't have a dedicated parking lot but there is a side street that makes getting in and out relatively simple. As soon as I got out of my car I was able to smell the meat from outside. It was DIVINE! I tried their 1/2 Chicken and 1/2 Pork Ribs combo and it was a TON of food for the price!
