Most important, the food was REALLY good. I didn't really understand the menu at first, and the man…read morebehind the counter wasn't very friendly. He told me their chips and salsa aren't like what you get in most Mexican restaurants, and that they make their salsa in house. I was confused, because I was like, What do you mean your chips and salsa aren't like chips and salsa? But I get it now, and they really aren't. The chips are totopos, and the salsa is a very flavorful, thin pureed sauce that has been cooked or roasted-- not sure exactly how they make it, but there is cooking and technique involved for sure. They were SO GOOD. So delicious-- I have an Oaxaca restaurant nearish me, and now I can't wait to try it. I ordered the ceviche, which came with the totopos. I asked for more salsa verde and glad I did. They do charge for extra salsa (if your order comes with it, they give you a little of each the red and green). Glad I did because it was SO GOOD. I licked the container for real. If I ever come back to Covington it would be to come here and have the exact same thing. I took a star off because I didn't like the service.

Orders are always ready when they say. The only reason I'm not giving a 5-star rating is because I recently veered off from street tacos (of which I'm a connoisseur, if I do say so myself) to try other menu items and I wasn't all that impressed. I'd recommend sticking to the street tacos, which are amazing every time. Great job, Jose (or whatever your name actually is :).

The Mexican Street Rice was next level good. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, but it has a pretty cool vibe and the decor is nice. The biggest issue was the service. The employee working the cash register came across as rude and unfriendly, as if customers were inconveniencing him. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like we were being treated poorly, which put a damper on the entire visit. While the food tasted good, the portions were a bit skimpy on ingredients for the price. Considering how expensive everything was, I expected better value and a more positive customer experience. I know this restaurant has plenty of fans, but I found some of the employees to be arrogant and dismissive. The treatment we received felt rude and unprofessional, and it left a lasting negative impression. Overall, I am deeply disappointed. Good food can only make up for so much, and the poor service overshadowed what could have been an enjoyable meal. I would not return based on the way we were treated. It's very clean but very old stuff and to much on display with old plants everywhere.

The exterior of this restaurant's building has always appeared to be quite modest, but based on a…read morelocal resident's suggestion, I recently decided to give it a try. This is a decent, family-owned restaurant. Much of the food appears to be made from scratch. The owners are accommodating folks. The Mrs. will answer any questions posed to her. The Mr. is a bit of a character, and may give you some sarcasm and a bit of attitude. (If you realize that, then your visit should be fine. He means no harm.) Their food is served on "real" dishes made of ceramic (not plastic). However, iced tea, soda pop, and other cold drinks are served within hard, plastic cups. They have a full menu of food, but also offer daily specials. I've had the pleasure of enjoying two (2) of the lunch specials: 1) The country-fried steak is tasty, moist, and nicely breaded 2) Even more delicious is their chicken and dumplings with homemade cornbread! There are hearty chunks of meat swimming within this generous dish along with well-prepared dumplings. Be sure to watch for a piece or two of chicken bones, though. Homemade, indeed! The paved parking lot is more than adequate, given the size of the building. There's additional parking on crushed rocks, located in the back. Despite there being only about three customers during a weekday afternoon, the waitress was distracted by her phone, and didn't refill my drink until prompted by me. The restaurant is located across the street (north of) from the Family Dollar store. I recommend this eatery, and plan on returning again. (My pictures were posted by Yelp elsewhere, within the photos section of this business.)

So much that I usually make little happy dances and pleasure sounds while eating. I don't even care who sees me either. There is more soul in this little gas station restaurant than anywhere within twenty miles. This is Soul Food at its best. You may ask how I can call Mexican food, Soul Food...? Here is my take... Soul Food, to me, is much more than a "type of food". Don't get me crooked, I am all about some OxTail's, Smothered Pork Chops, Chicken & Dressing, Turkey Necks, Greens, Cornbread, etc. etc. etc. It's about food made with love, by people who love to make food, with techniques and seasonings handed down through generations of good people. That is what you get here! Every time I eat here I am filled with the love of the folks in the kitchen as well as their ancestors. It's a small family business, and Tony is one of the greatest people you will ever meet. He is so happy to be in his little section of this gas station slinging this heavenly food. I drive 40 minutes each way from work to eat here and as soon as I leave I cannot wait to get back. It's that damn good! Everything is great, but you have to try the Carnitas! Life changing flavor!
