I have the habit of going to Taco Bell every day and ordering a Cheesy Bean & Rice Burrito with ice water. The employees know my order and are usually helpful. But on Saturday there was a problem.
This is not really a very good Taco Bell, but it is the only one in town. So patience is required. One week they will be out of napkins. Another week they will be out of hot sauce. The day I had the problem they were out of ice.
I came inside. The girl was talking on her phone behind the counter. She put down the phone and asked if I wanted a Cheesy Bean & Rice Burrito.
I said, "Yes."
Then she said, "We are out of ice."
I said, "Well, I have to have ice."
She said, "Do you still want the burrito?"
I said, "I want the burrito, but I need to go someplace and get some ice. I cannot get the burrito first because it will get cold while I am getting the ice. I will go get some ice and then come back and get the burrito."
But she did not hear anything I said because as soon as I started talking, she turned and started talking to someone at the window.
Then she turned to me and asked if I wanted to order the burrito.
I said, "I want the burrito, but I will go get some ice and then come back and order the burrito."
But she did not hear what I said because as soon as I started talking, she turned and started talking to someone at the window.
Then she turned back to me and ask me again if I wanted the burrito.
So this time, I asked, "Are you listening to me?"
She said, "Yes. I am listening to you. Do you want the burrito?"
Then I said, "You have not been listening to me or you would not still have the question."
Then she asked, "Do you want the burrito?"
So I said, "Listen to what I am saying."
And I started to say, "I am going to go someplace and get some ice and then come back and get the burrito."
But she did not hear me because she shrugged and muttered something and turned and picked up her phone and started talking on the phone and refused to talk to me anymore. She would not listen to me or answer me anymore. But she had to walk in front of me to go out to the dining room.
So I asked, "Are you being rude to me?"
But she just ignored me and went and sat in the dining room talking to someone on the phone.
So I left and went and got some ice water. Then I came back and one of the men working in the back came up to the counter and I finally did get my burrito. But it was a whole lot of work just for one burrito.
I still do not know if she is going to talk to me and wait on me the next time I go in to order. And if she does wait on me . . . will she pay attention and listen to what I am saying . . . read more
