What a disappointment this restaurant has become. Often only one employee working, and the line gets LONG! Used to eat here all the time with the original owners and it was great, when locations started closing and new ownership of this store took over a few years back things really took a slide. Owners family eating at a table with outside food they brought in and prepared right in the middle of workers making food for customers. Lots of light bulbs out, no background music, and filthy restroom. This location also doesn't participate in rewards program like other locations. Perhaps the management has changed since 2012 because this spot doesn't seem the same as what's been described in the lower-star reviews. It's not the best but it's not the worst; I'd say it's above average. The space is in a strip mall, it is clean inside, and the staff were fine--not overly friendly but not impolite either. I've had their fish taco combo plate twice in the last two weeks and both times it was fine. The build-your-own options are a nice touch here, and everything I've eaten has tasted fresh enough and didn't come back to haunt me later. Summary: Not as good as some of the taco vendors in the local cart pods but lighter than many sit down Mex in PDX (i.e. Original Taco House, La Caretta), and better (and fresher) than any Taco Bell for just a few bucks more. read more

So disappointed this past year or so with this place. I love their food but every time it's a different issue with them charging me incorrectly for the food I've ordered. Most of the time they will correct it but this time because I didn't state that I wanted a combo although I'd ordered the combo items they decided to charge full price for everything including the drink. They then wouldn't fix this when I nicely brought it up and told me that I have to word things correctly pretty much or else this is what I get. So let down by this place. If McDonald's is the junked 1989 Camry, Taco del Mar is the Mustang convertible. While Taco del Mar is definitely fast food, it's a whole other breed...it's a place that I actually feel okay going to and eating. They have a good menu--nothing expansive or particularly inventive (but hey, it's fast food, right?)--but you can watch them make your burrito and choose from an adequate variety of tortillas (like whole wheat), meats, and salsas. I like the fact that they have tasty black beans. The burritos are pretty large, but often have a lot of rice in them. The price is comparable to Burgerville...cheap enough to be called fast food, but definitely on the higher end. If you get chips and salsa, be sure to ask for the pico de gallo instead of salsa, which is much tastier and fresher. There's adequate sitting room, but I really wish they'd bring back the bar with all the hot sauces. :( read more

I LOVE Mexican food. The spicier the better. While they don't have anything paticularly spicy, it is still one of my favorite place to eat. I may be overly excited by this restaurant. I know its a chain, but I recently devoured the best burrito I've had in Portland since I came here in '08. Once I saw the Taco del Mar tagline of "mission style burritos," I had to try one. Simply, I've been trying to find a nummy burrito in a nasty burrito burg. Tacos del won me over with the 'build your own' style and variety of choices. Pinto, refried and black beans are available, chicken or beef three types of salsa....and even though sour cream and guac are extra, I still got out of there for under 8 bucks with chips and a drink! It was a damn fine burrito, and i wasn't hungry for at least another 24 hours post burrito consumption. read more

No longer a patron there as of December 19th, 2016. Here is what happened- I have a Buy One get One Free for any size burrito of equal or lesser value that I received from their own manager couple months back that does not expire. It clearly says Buy One Get One Free any size burrito/ of EQUAL OR LESSER VALUE. So I decided to order a Mondo burrito added extra meat and toppings almost to a total of a $7 burrito ( that included the extra 50cent price of sour cream) no problem. Then the same burrito duplicate.and a 2 Enchilada platter. Well the total first came to $15+ ok, then the guy says, "Oh theres a mistake" and he says I have to charge you $4 extra more.... "Why"? I asked. He then started pointing out that each shredded beef extra is 50 cents more, and I acknowledge it because that was already on the receipt which I didn't mind and I pointed out I already was charged for the extras, a total of 3 servings of shredded beef TOTAL (2 serves on one burrito and 1 single serve on the other) that would equal to $1.50 , the extra for sour cream was already charged on there too totaling $1.00 and it says right there on the reciept.... $2.50 extra toppings MAX.... "so where do you get I have to pay an extra $4.00 ?" I asked him. He then couldnt come up for a reason just said I have to pay another extra $4.00 which would make my bill to around $20.... well that would not make sense because the Enchilada Platter was $6.50... a regular Mondo burrito was $6.00 , mind you that the substitution for regular meat for shredded beef was 50 cent for each serve so I had 2 one 1 and 1 on the other total of 3 servings. $1.50. Now both burritos also had 1 serving of sour cream which would come to another $1.00 so it would be $2.5 altogther extra which I was willing to pay, but then he said I HAVE TO PAY AN EXTRA $4.00 on TOP OF ALL THAT??? MAKES NO SENSE. If the burrito I ordered came close to $7.00 and $6.50 for the Enchilada meal, then it should be around $13-$14 TOTAL. I looked at the receipt and the supposed "free" burrito was only marked off for $5.50.... okay... my original receipt to pay was about $15+ WITH the $5.50 marked off burrito and that guy said I have to pay an extra $4 more for almost $20??? WHAT KIND OF A DISCOUNT IS THIS? NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAD THE ENTIRE ORDERED CANCELLED AND TOLD HIM KEEP THE COUPON, YOUR MANAGER GAVE THAT TO ME AND I WANT HIM TO SEE THAT RECEIPT. I don't think that employee cared to keep that transaction ticket coupon to show to their manager/owner. I can't go here anymore to a place that does not honor their own coupon and nowhere on it said "up to $$$ amount". The service was as horrible as The food. The woman behind the counter was working so slow I thought she would fall asleep on the spot. Every time she asked me a question I would have to ask her to repeat herself at least 2 times because I couldn't hear a word she was saying. I used to eat here twice a month and never got so much as a "nice to see you" or "how are you today?". I agree with the cold food. I think the owner doesn't care about customer service, or may not be aware of the lack in it. I've never been a fan of tipping before you eat your food. If it sucks, can you take your tip back? I'll gladly tip afterward, if it's good. It will probably go out of business if the owner won't step in. This is the same reason a lot of the Quizno's failed. I eat here at least once a week. The food has always been great and consistent. Tonight was not the case. I ordered a taco salad, one of my usuals. The shell was stale and I love to eat the crispy shells. I told them the shell was stale and could I possibly have a new shell. They gave me a new shell from same place the original one came from. Tore off a piece and of course it was stale also. I gave it back to them and they said nothing. No apology or offer for something else. There are two Women that work there, that are like unfriendly robots and I am a regular. The Guy that works here is great. So nice and friendly and will substitute items without charging 50 cents each. My daughter does not like beans on her nachos, so he puts rice on instead. One more gripe. They should offer quest as an option with kids meal instead of just salsa. My kids want the cheese and they charge 50 cents extra and don't give you the salsa.
