This place took me by surprise! I always just ignored Taco Flats for some reason, in favor of my favorite taco truck or other local taco joint. I finally decided to try it and was very, very impressed!! We went for brunch and tried the black & green on flour and the migas on corn. Let me just start off by saying, these tacos are HUGE. I swear they weighed like 4 lbs each. And they're very indulgent, as far as breakfast tacos go--there's a layer of fried jack cheese coating the tortilla, which is absolutely delicious but you might need a walk around the neighborhood afterward, haha. I am usually a 2 taco girl from places like Tacodeli or Veracruz but here I could only finish half of each taco and was stuffed, so just know that before you order too many! The migas was my favorite. I usually get my tacos on corn because I love the flavor and I just deal with them falling apart on me, but this corn tortilla was sturdy and held everything together. The chips in the eggs were still crunchy and the pico was so fresh. I also loved the addition of the grilled onions. The black & green was also great and I loved the black beans with the creamy guac and eggs, but migas narrowly beat it out. Ok, so Taco Flats wasn't where we were going, but I'm not mad at ending up here. We tried to go to Peached next door, but the wait was 45 minutes and we were bordering hangry. Plus, there was a toddler on board, so hanging out in a parking lot wasn't attainable. Luckily, we were seated immediately at Taco Flats, in fact there was a table reserved for us. The host mentioned we could sit anywhere, but someone led us to a table with a reserved sign. The guy mentioned that they keep some reserved table to encourage the guest who are only drinking to sit at the bar. I thought this was a great compromise for the late diners and barflies. I was able to taste the queso, jalepeno poppers, and tuna tostada and it was tasty, tasty. I loved the poppers, since they weren't fried. Just bacon, cream cheese and jalepeno - just the way I like it. The tuna was also delicious, but at market price, I'd skip it. It added almost $20 to our bill alone. Taco Flats couldn't have been more accommodating! After having not one, but two places way too busy for us, Taco Flats sat us right away with such a positive, welcoming attitude. I live so close, and have never ventured in, and now that I am aware of the fun, laid back atmosphere mixed with some damn good margaritas, I have a feeling I will be a regular fixture. Our server was so upbeat and earned extra brownie points for their patience and understanding of my little Gus man. They even seemed to be okay with him running up and down the bar area to get his Toddler energy out. I do believe there are much better selections on the menu that I seem to overlook, because of my frazzled mommy state; however the flautas I did order did the trick, but after examining other people's plates, I think I ordered wrong. It's places like this that convinces me people in Austin will actually eat anything for a ridiculous price. Was really hoping my second visit would change my mind but, it just convinced me I would never come back. Came here for lunch with my husband and there is no comfortable seating...anywhere. Place looks like there was a sale on 2x4's and everything was built out of them. Tables by the wall are welded with this weird partition so it makes the seating awkward if you're in a group. Nothing appealing with the decor so maybe their food will be good, right? Wrong! We ordered queso and chips, the queso was pretty thick had a tablespoon of guacamole and some chorizo (with all it's greasy fat). Chips were crispy and had some chili sprinkled in them that didn't have much flavor. My husband ordered the chicken flautas which are $8. It's literally chicken wrapped in a tortilla and fried so I thought there maybe be 6 of them or maybe it would be accompanied with a side of rice and beans, you know a full meal. No it only came with 4 and the flautas weren't really full of chicken and the little chicken it had was a little on the dry side. I decided to order their tostadas the atún that everyone was raving about. As soon as they brought me the plate I instantly regretted it, the plate looked so sad and don't even get me started on the flavor. It was 2 tortillas split into halves, fried and sprinkled with way too much salt. Each of the tostadas has a few pieces of tuna with a very small amount of their aioli and avocado. I can't believe I was charged $18 for this poor excuse of a meal. There was nothing wow about it, it was served in a metal tray wrapped in aluminum foil, was not pretty looking and it was so hard to eats once the tostadas were way too salty. I was very disappointed again, came here for my lunch hour with my husband and left here still hungry and our bill was a little over $45 for "meal" for two. Some plusses and some minuses. The negative factors (which are subjective) is the atmosphere. I don't like bars and that type atmosphere. So for me personally, this was a bit of a negative. If you like that type of atmosphere, disregard this part of the review. And I know that this a plus for many. I am on an eternal search for the perfect fish taco. And I have odd tastebuds regarding this food item. I love a small batter dipped Alaskan Pollock, and all the regular ingredients on a fresh corn tortilla. I ordered the Pescadito, a fish taco with Mahi Mahi, seasoned cabbage, pico de gallo etc. It was a little spicier than I ideally like, and the fish was not battered or Alaskan Pollock. But that said, I'm not sure exactly what they put on the fish (some sort of marinade, or grilling spice), but I did like the fish (I can't believe my fussy taste buds let me say that). The corn tortilla was very good, and fresh/homemade. And inspite of the fact that that there was just a little more heat (spice) than I like (this IS Texas, after all), I have to confess that aside from my favorite fish taco (from Del Taco - I know, fast food, and they recently moved out of the Austin area), this one was the best one I've had in a long time. Remember that preferences in fish tacos are highly subjective. This must be one of my most confusing reviews. Brunch tacos every weekend until 3pm (with the best waffles/pancake recipe!) and these are the BEST breakfast tacos I have found in Austin. My two consistent favorites are the Chilaquiles and Huevos Ranchero, both on flour. Also went through a time that the Dirty South (eggs, bacon, potato, cheese, refried black beans) was my standby. Fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked egg, savory flavors, fresh cilantro, fresh salsas, and spicy frozen margaritas that I crave. There is an option for a frozen mezcal margarita, La Sancha - highly recommend both! My wife and I are consistent weekend brunch fans, I go during the week sometimes as they also serve their brunch tacos until 3pm, and we introduce friends who travel into Austin and share with local friends. This review is for the brick and mortar location on Burnet Road. There's a small parking lot out front, shared with its neighbor, The Peached Tortilla. Seating inside is a bit tricky. There's the main bar, and a few round tables permanently attached to the wall in front of a long bench seat with wooden stools, and two really long bar tables with bar stools on either side. One of these long bar tables butts right up to the shuffleboard they have that lines one entire wall by the kitchen. Food: Order the queso with everything, or get the sampler. Try the Gringa, an al pastor with cheese grilled into the bottom of the tortilla. The Burro is a vegetarian option with spinach and an over easy egg amongst other things. The Al Pastor, Carne, Shrimp are all amazing options. Note: They have HOMEMADE flour tortillas. Make sure you try it. If soup is your thing, and even if it's not, order it. The posole was delicious. Cup sized and full of flavor. The caldo de pollo was just as good. Service: Attentive, and they ensured our drinks were always topped up. Food came out pretty quickly. Cost: About $4 per taco on average. You'll probably be able to knock back two to three of those. Overall: A must try. Low key and fun place. read more

Stay away from doing catering with this place! The personnel are very arrogant and rude. They don't have any sense of how to treat a customer. I wanted to have them to do a catering for an event but I had the worst experience dealing with catering coordinator and the manager. They ended up wasting my time and being insulted. They are not responsive and believe they are so good that the customer has to beg to get their service. Here is the whole story if you are interested: I've contacted the catering coordinator via email to get an idea of how their catering works. After waiting for a week and no response, I called the restaurant to get another point of contact. They told me that the coordinator is on vacation and I was given another email address to reach out to. After forwarding the email to the new contact, they replied me that they cannot help me and I have to wait for the catering coordinator to get back from the long vacation. I've replied to the email, left my phone number, and asked if they can call me so that I can get some info while waiting for the coordinator. They never called me. Finally, after couple of days, the coordinator emailed me some info about the catering service. The info was very general and did not address the details I had asked for. Knowing that they are super slow in responding, I replied immediately and asked the coordinator if she can call me so that I can get the information I need. I left my phone number again and explained that I'm losing time and need to decide soon. The coordinator never called. She replied to my email 2 days later saying that she can give me a call on upcoming Monday which was 3 days ahead. At this point, I was sure that I will have difficult times making this catering happening with them but I agreed on the date and time for a phone call. She never called me on Monday. I got a text from her on Tuesday evening asking if I can talk. So I immediately said yes and we finally talked. We have clarified things on the call and she emailed me a quote for catering few days later. I had some follow up questions about the quote and now that I had her phone number, I texted her to see if we can have another phone call in the hope that she is more responsive on text. She bluntly replied "Email me your questions and if I can't answer them via email we can schedule a call this week". I explained "My questions are long and detailed and I'm too busy to write a long email. Need to discuss them over the phone. What is your earliest availability this week for a phone call?". She told me that she will call me the following day. I waited till evening that day and never a got a call. So I followed up with a text and eventually got to talk to her. After few days, I went to the restaurant and tested their tacos. I wanted to ask more questions so asked for another phone call. First, she said she will call me but I got an email later saying that she is busy and she can only answer emails. At this point I had already wasted few weeks without making much progress but I thought maybe I can still make this work so I unwillingly sat down and wrote a long email asking my questions. She never got back to me. Furious at this point, I texted "I emailed you my questions yesterday but did not get any response. I'm kind of disappointed with you not being responsive. I mean you should be the one following up with me if you want my business. I prefer phone calls for these kind of conversations but I respected your choice and still emailed you. Call me If you are interested to continue the discussion." The only thing I got after this text was a shocking email from the manager saying that I'm not an actual customer and don't appreciate them as "who they are". The manager said they won't do business with me unless I apologize. The email claimed that I was calling the employees things that they don't deserve! I just had a typo in my email and instead of the word "server" used "servant". The emailed contained "you should be ashamed to talk to people in service that way". So after landing here in Austin I quickly realized that the city has a hankering for taco's. I've been around several taco locations in Austin serving tacos priced from $2.50 for street tacos up to $8 for gourmet tacos. The funny thing, is that the higher priced tacos can't see to compare with some of the mid priced tacos. Taco Flats far exceeds those so called gourmet tacos hands down. My fav's are the Gringa and the Carne Asada. Of course, washing them down with a 512 Fresca with Habenaro salt on the rim. Mmm, mmm, mmm. They also offer great Happy Hour pricing on several menu items from 2pm to 6pm. Now how can you beat that. The only think I'd suggest, they work on is consistency. Taco Flats is next door to Peached Tortilla on Burnet. A bar serving many beers on tap, a long list of alcoholic speciality drinks and of course tacos. The menu has a long list of local beers on tap. I tried the chips & salsa but the chips weren't very good. Had some seasoning covering like doritos. It seemed like flour chips instead of corn. The tacos are tasty but they are certainly not cheap. Some at $5+ for one taco. The gringa is tasty with the great pork, pineapple, onions and cheese. Carne asada meat tastes good but a bit tough to chew. I think what hurts Taco Flats is the setup. There is a back parking lot but it's very narrow and has few spots. Most of the seating is at the bar with a few high tables. The place is in a split of being a stand around drinking bar or a sit down kinda of spot with the seating arrangement. The tacos are tasty, the tortillas home made, but man it's not cheap. There are plenty of bar options in Austin and more than enough taco joints. The queso at Taco Flats is legit. The shrimp taco I got was also great, but be warned the green sauce on the side is not mayo based like I assumed, it packs some HEAT! I wasn't a fan of the chorizo which I knew would happen but working my way around it I wished it was Kerbey Lane queso. I couldn't finish the crispy taco sadly because the filling just didn't jive with me (texture and flavor). The Al Pastor I found pretty lackluster and dry and the Hippy was nothing to write home about. The service though was great. I sat outside with my pup and was greeted with a smile and a rundown of happy hour (which is another redeeming factor here). I was checked on and drink refilled all in great cadence considering I was the only on seated on the patio. Btw - a previous review was spot on with the stools. Why do places use these!?! Happy hour is great and a bill that would have normally been $20 was just under $15. What a surprisingly gem. After not being able to be seated at The Peached Tortilla, my friend and I came to this place because it was next door. I see these unfavorable reviews and I have to say, it wasn't my experience at all. First, we sat at the bar and the bartenders were so attentive and kind. It was a Sunday afternoon and despite business being a little heavy, they waited on us tended to our every need. The food was great and reasonably priced. Haha strange thing: I was watching the Food Network really late at night a few years ago and I saw this place was featured on a Michael Symon television show. I really respect and love Michael Symon, so I thought I would give this place a shot. Wow - the tacos were bomb. I especially loved the Gringa and the Pirata tacos. No the attitude of the servers is mind boggling! You not only not get service but the few interactions the staff has with you it's with major attitude! I'm enjoying this place as a low key hang. The cocktails are good. There's a solid rotating beer selection. The food is good. There are several tasty vegetarian options on the menu. The parking for Taco Flats is shared with the Peached Tortilla. I strongly recommend you walk, get dropped off or car pool. Every place surrounding has towing enforced. So- no parking. It was blustery day to try and be on their tiny patio. I very much wanted to sit outside. When the mason jar with napkins and plastic cutlery went flying- I decided otherwise. Went chasing after those napkins and picked up the plastic wear off the ground. Thankfully the mason was still intact. I head for the bar- this is where the BIG negative went down. The bartender was rude af to me over the napkins. I'm shoving the napkins in the jar-because at this point it's all trash. She all- No-No- No don't do that. Ugh omg! I quickly explain to her all of this just came off the ground. She rolls her eyes and says. 'Fine I'll just throw it all away' this chick even tossed the mason jar. I flag down my waitress who went looking for me outside. She has the flautas I ordered. I ask for my taco to go- eat those flautas and leave. Taco Flats just lost a customer. I stumbled upon this place, purely by accident. I was meeting a friend for dinner at Chi'lantro, but they were closed for a holiday party. Next, we tried the Peached Tortilla, but they were closed on Mondays. Next door was Taco Flats so we decided to skip driving around and just go there. The restaurant/bar is roomy and has great bar stools and seating spaces. I love that they have purse hooks under the bar but wish there were more. I love the lower foot bar to rest your feet on without having to hyper flex your legs in order to keep your feet from dangling. We sat at the bar and were greeted promptly, but that's where the customer service went downhill. The bar was short staffed and although he was working quickly, he was unable to keep up with the demand and drinks frequently sat empty, empty glasses and food boats didn't get cleared and it was difficult to get his attention. When the check came, we both put our cards in and said split it, but without a word to us, he charged the entire bill to just one card, mine. Rather than deal with trying to wait around until we could get his attention again, we just agreed to letting my friend pay for the next outing. The redeeming thing was that the food and drinks were really good. The corn tortillas are made in house and you can really tell the difference. The papas with queso and chorizo were sloppy, delicious bar food that I'd definitely return for. The taco al pastor was also good and I'd love to try some of the other tacos. The drinks were creative and tasty and probably my favorite thing about this place. Who knows, maybe they were short some help tonight.
