The most recent reviews for Taco Flats had me thinking it was a bad choice for Friday happy hour. However, I often prefer to take a chance and find out for myself whether a place is good or not and I'm so glad I did. We ordered the pick 3 appetizers: red salsa, queso and guacamole. I was not a fan of the queso but the guacamole was tasty although quite salty. We also ordered the chicken flautas, a barbacoa and a pirata taco. The barbacoa taco was the clear winner out of everything we ordered. The beef tongue and roll meat was so moist and it melted in my mouth. I ordered a frozen drink that had mezcal, lime and homemade hibiscus syrup. It was flavorful and refreshing... the perfect drink for a hot summer afternoon. I'm going through a mezcal obsession right now and it definitely hit the spot. I'm sure I'll be back for barbacoa and mezcal drinks. read more

Taco flats was a favorite spot for us when we first moved to Austin 5 years ago, but the overall quality isn't what it used to be. The queso was amazing as always, but the tacos seem thrown together and not great quality of the tortillas or meat. We keep coming back because we've loved it for so long, but the past few times we've left disappointed. Servers are always nice though! read more

TLDR: Pretty mediocre tacos in what seems to be a really cool bar Came here for lunch one weekend (I guess it was technically brunch?). I got the Carne Asada and the San Chorizo. The carne asada was pretty good. The fillings were all I expected them to be, but the tortilla was really dry and tough. The San Chorizo was a different story. It was overall greasy and tasted pretty average. Unfortunately, the tortilla basically dissolved halfway through eating, so I had to finish off the fillings with a fork. The place seems more focused around the sports bar than the taco place, but I didn't have anything to drink, so can't really comment on that. Overall: if you're looking for tacos, look elsewhere. This place is a great place to unwind or get some work done. When I've explored the menu enough I tend to order the same thing consistently. That "thing" has been 2 Carne Asada on Flour. That's it, that's what I come here for. I arrive, I say the magic words. They nod. I nod or do that memish Robert Redford before he looked like Robert Redford nod, and moments later I'm satisfied beyond my wildest dreams. The Carne Asada here is not your typical carne asada.. no, my friend. One does not simply order carne asada here and expect their life to remain the same. The carne asada here is other worldly. It's thick, moist, juicy - I haven't looked into it but I wouldn't be surprised if it cures Low-T. It's just very good quality steak, and I don't know what it is but it always strikes a chord with my carnivorous side. Another thing, the music is good. Maybe it's just me and maybe it's just my generation but the music here is always perfect and always exactly what I want to hear. read more

Gringa - very tasty with the cheese on the flour tortilla 2. Grilled shrimp taco - super average and not something I'd order again 3. Al Pastor taco - tasty as well 4. Pescadito - fish of the day which was good 5. Ahi Tuna Tostada - for $18 this was not worth it All in all, not sure why places seem to think that charging $6 per taco is worth it. It's not. I stopped in for happy hour and had an okay experience. The waitress seemed to be having a terrible day or was just very bored. The tacos were all pretty mediocre, although generous in portion size. We ordered the following: Frozen margarita -- Decent, but small portion Watermelon aguas fresca -- Was okay, didn't taste super fresh. Small portion Chips and queso -- I loved the chips, they're so addicting! The queso was just okay Birria taco -- The consume was good, but the actual taco needed more flavor. However, this was the best one out of all the tacos we ordered Panela taco -- Had virtually no flavor. I doused the taco in the green sauce that came with it, which only made the taco spicy with no flavor. Al pastor taco -- The worst taco, so dry and had no flavor at all. Chilango shrimp taco -- This was the second best taco, but the shrimp definitely tasted frozen. I let the waitress know about the al pastor taco because it was truly awful and I had only taken one bite, but she just said "ok" and then gave us our check. I've passed Taco Flats so many times driving down Burnet, butTODAY WAS THE DAY! We finally got some tacos! Plusses: - GREAT Covid setup. Same back lot as Peached Tortilla, you call them and they bring out your food curbside. - HUGE tacos, so if you think they seem a little pricier - keep this in mind. I absolutely couldn't eat more than 1.5 tacos! TONS of meat, I had so many shrimp in one of my tacos! - Lots of options. Want a flour tortilla? Corn? or JICAMA? They've got you covered. I highly recommend the seafood tacos with Jicama, i LOVED my shrimp taco with it. Cons: - I think the salsa is a little strange tasting, there are some herbs in it that aren't my cup of tea. - I wasn't a huge fan of the melted cheese inside some of the tacos. Service was good, ambience was good; food not so much. First off, the parking was not enough given that the parking is also used by The Peached Tortilla next door. Inspire of the reduced number of people ( COVID), there was no parking for a good 20 mins. We wanted to do thing so we waited but there were people who parked in the hospital parking across the road (really?!) We went in on. Saturday night and the place has plenty of available spots to get seated quickly. We ordered the Veggie (beans) flautas to start off. They were served piping hit and were good. It came with the green jalapeno sauce. Next up we ordered the tacos from the veggie selections, El Hippe, the bur-ro, grilled panela. Here comes the surprising part, for a taco spot, I did expect them to have multiple sauces. When asked they did not. The one sauce did not go great with all three tacos. Clearly there was something lacking in the taste and variety. The tacos were fresh and tastes okay but the sauces were required to add in zing. This needs improvement in my opinion. Just incredible. Great drinks and knowledgeable bartenders. Drink menu is "peppered" with great ideas. Really enjoyed the chili and chipotle salt on the glass rim. Whether blended or over ice all of the drinks were exceptional. Ewe on top was cold,fresh and had great variety. On top of a the cocktails being great, the tacos are amazing. Might be the best in Austin. Great portions. Ingredients were fresh and well crafted. Do yourself a favor and try different ones. They have a great selections of proteins and veggie options. Pre- CV19 visit. I'm happy to report this is still a 4-star venue. You should be aware that TF is not large so during their busy periods they will be jammed. One thing that I don't like is their seating, but it's a small price to pay to truly wonderful tortillas Be aware that they have rotating taps so ask your server if they have any small batches available. We have been here a number of times and there always seems to be a local or CA-based specialty beer available. But I'm not here for the beer I'm here for quaff down some of their righteous tortillas. Onto the food. Homemade tortillas you bet! I went with barbacoa and a pork option. I could have gone for a third but beer, chips, and amazing sauces had filled my panza to satisfaction. Not sure if this is still happening but be aware of the no parking signs for the lot next door. If you park there you are booted immediately and your only recourse is to pay up there to have the boot removed. read more

Really cool local joint with classic tacos and some classic tacos with a twist. The vibe inside is super chill and kind of replicates an outdoor patio but you get to sit in the AC, best of both worlds. They have a long list of different drinks and margaritas so I suggest you trying a few each time you're there to find out which one you really like, lots of great options. I personally was impressed by the spicy frozen Rita and as an on the rocks girl that says a lot. Some of my favorite tacos are the chicken mole and chilango shrimp. Of course guac and queso are always a staple, you must get them here because they do it very well and their chips are hardy and seasoned nicely. My husband and I met up with some friends for a bite to eat before heading to a comedy show. We arrived just before happy hour ended which was nice so we save a few bucks. We ordered some guacamole and chips as a starter. The guacamole had nice flavoring to it and I liked that the chips were fresh. We had learned that everything is made in-house every day and they don't have any freezers. I had ordered a spicy frozen margarita to enjoy with the meal. The margarita was really good with the right amount of spice and sweetness. I enjoyed two while I was here and they were nicely poured. My husband ordered a Margarita Casera which was equally as good. For our meal, we both ordered two tacos a piece. I enjoyed the Fish Al Pastor which is described as black drum in al pastor sauce, onion, cilantro, pineapple. I was able to choose what kind of shell I wanted and my friend had suggested the jicama. What?!!? Jicama? Yes ladies and gents, they make a jicama shell and it was delicious. I will note that you should eat that taco first as the taco was a little harder to hold and cooled down some since I ate it second. I also enjoyed the barbacoa: beef tongue and beef roll, fried garlic, onion, cilantro. I thought both tacos were flavorful My husband got the Pirata: grilled jack cheese, refried black beans, grilled beef fajita, grilled onion, cilantro and the Al Pastor: spit roasted pork, onion, cilantro, pineapple. Absolutely the worst, most bizarre experience I've ever had at a restaurant/bar in my entire life and echoed by my wife. Went to TF 10/15 for drinks to enjoy the evening weather. Entered the restaurant and was not greeted , no one to be found, so we sat ourselves (no big deal, just weird). QR coded the menu and was asked to create a login and such; I am going to limit my personal info on someone else's server - so the answer is NO. Had 3 waitstaff wander past us for an hour without a single effort to interact (weird) ..... I was not going to make an effort to solicit their attention just to see how long the situation would go on. Ended up chatting with my wife outside at the table for 60 minutes sipping on water. This was the most socially "F"'d up experience ever. It's like the people running the show had the personalities of dead fish. Used to go to TF when they first opened but the food has gotten pricey for a fricking taco and the drink menu is lame. The interior dining for a Saturday night may have been an indication of things given hardly anyone was inside. I suggest going next door to the Peached Tortilla and juxtaposing the quality of service, cocktails, and food. read more

This place really surprised me. Was not sure what to expect, but it came recommended by some trusted Yelp friends for brunch and it did not disappoint! First off, they make a Mexican coffee to perfection, second, their tacos are on point. I got the dirty south and it was pretty filling. Third, if you thought you could not get a mind-blowingly good waffle at a taco-joint, in this instance you would be mistaken. Just get the bacon waffle and thank me later. Came here for cinco de mayo and I'm so glad I did! The atmosphere is laid back, neighborhood bar type feel. The bartenders here are super sweet. And the food is bangin'! I came prepared to chow down and ordered the choose three and chose the gaucamole, salsa, and escabeche. Next I split the chicken flautas and had the chilango shrimp taco. The salsa is fantastic and served with house made chips. The chicken flautas were really dry but the shrimp tacos stole the show! The shrimp is perfectly fried and everything is just super fresh. We decided to do one of our ladies' happy hours at this spot. I'll start with that the parking situation is a little wonky. I recommend heading past the restaurant to Northland and doing street parking over there. Once I got there, the waitress was very friendly. She helped me wipe off the wet seats, so we could comfortably sit outside. I did two Mezcal cocktails while I was there and enjoyed both very much. We started with the queso, which was delicious. It came out with some Doritos-looking chips, but they must be seasoned with a spice, like cayenne or chili powder. I got the Al Pastor and Chori-Queso taco. Both were delicious. As a heads up, the Al Pastor is normally a softer meat, but theirs is with a spit roasted pork (more like the bark on the meat). This is a good spot to grab a taco AND a cocktail, something trailers aren't as capable of providing. read more

My dad and I came here on a Thursday evening after we came to peaches Tortilla and found ourselves looking at an hour + wait. We decided to step in here next door and give this place a try. I'd heard this place had great tacos, but with the other place on an hour wait and this place more than half empty I should have been a bit cautious. My dad and I got seated right away which was a good thing. The server took a while to come over, but that wasn't too big a deal. I ended up ordering the Pescadito and the Fish Al Pastor. Both tacos included black drum which was super cool and not something I've ever seen in fish tacos. They get it local and you could tell it was really fresh, but the tacos were very bland. To be frank, probably the worst tacos I've had in Austin. They were just bland and way overpriced. $7 a taco?!? Velvet Taco and Torchy's blow this place out the water. On the upside of things, the place seated us right away, the service was decent, the building was very pretty and the atmosphere was pretty good, but when you go for good food that's what you're looking for. This seems more like a bar that also serves tacos than a taco place that has a bar. Personally wouldn't recommend if you're looking for good tacos. read more

I truly enjoy the food but some people. I placed an order that included a hibiscus tea. The bartender prepares the drink by putting ice in the cup and pours the tea. It was too full to put a lid over the cup because of the ice , that he sticks his fingers in the drink and removes the ice. I asked for a new drink and he proceeds to tell me "You know how bars works right ?". I stayed calm and still requested for a new drink to be poured. It has been a hot minute since I have been here. The hard part of rating this place, I did not use my own money. I think I might have taken a star off if I were paying (I don't remember prices). Overal everything was great, this place is more about atmosphere and drinks than the food itself. However, I must critique all the things! The queso was okay/good. Tacos were either... out of this world or basic. I went through the stages of grief with one of them and was in nirvana with another. Drinks aka margaritas were great considering I hate tequila. Alex, why would you go to a place where the main focus is a tequila based drink? Because my client wanted to go because of the atmosphere. Which was fan friggin tastic. They have homemade corn and flour tortillas, both are excellent. Seafood + corn tortillas are a perfect match. Al pastor - delish! Generous strips of marinated pork. Al pescadito - aka little fish. When I had it, it was black drum. It was a mini fillet (maybe 3 oz?) that was super flavorful. Barbacoa - a combo of beef cheek and shredded steak, also delightfully savory. Definitely fatty, as some of the grease ran down my hand. Totally worth it Panela - grilled cheese. Ordered the Austinite taco and shared the guacamole and chips (which kind of remind me of classier Doritos). I love guacamole in any form, so no complaints there. The Austinite wasn't bad, a little on the plain side though. But the green sauce definitely has a heat kick to it, so don't be a fool like me and pour all of it onto your taco if you don't handle heat/spice well. The atmosphere is good, it's a pretty open layout with the bar in the middle. The service was nice, attentive, and patient with our big group which I appreciated since our party included children. Parking may be tricky; they share a small parking lot with The Peached Tortilla (which is behind the buildings), but you can also park in another lot across Burnet if need be. With so many taco places in Austin, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back to Taco Flats. read more

My favorite thing about this place was their chips: golden, crispy, thick, they're essentially pita-like and ready to scoop up however much queso and guac one can handle. I wouldn't normally go for these chips alone, but they were perfect when paired. My Barbacoa taco was nothing to die for. I appreciated that it was heftier on the meat side, but it didn't otherwise stand out from really any other taco you could get in Austin. I had the Moscow Mule, which I chose over the Coco Loco, and that was a mistake. The waitress said the Coco Loco would be really sweet, but even having been on a sugar diet (only to some degree, I'll admit), it wasn't bad. Sweet, yes. Really sweet, no. But yummy!!!! Should've done that instead of getting a Moscow Mule with a slice of habanero that apparently is what they mean when it says "habanero shrub." I was excited to get a while shrub, but no. My friend & I were visiting Austin & ended up at Taco Flats for some food! We weren't sure what to expect walking into the place because we literally were next door & just walked in randomly. It's a pretty cool place where you sit yourselves at a table or at the bar. We sat down & were immediately greeted by our waiter who brought us menus & some waters. He was really friendly & the service was fast. The food came out quick & the servers would always ask if we were doing good. I ended up ordering 2 carne asada tacos & a no-mah-mes cocktail.
