An okoboji classic although it might seem strange that a Mexican restaurant holds that spot in a Northwest Iowa lake town. Its probably the most famous Okoboji spot to eat, locals love it and most tourists also make it a point to eat here when visiting. The must-try dishes are the simple ones: the beef soft shell taco, all meat burrito, or the nachos (get nachos, with chicken, beef, or the works--not just chips and cheese). The sauce is amazing and worth buying some extra to take with you! (I wish they would jar it and sell it year round, but you can only buy paper coke cups full of it). They recently built an expansion to allow for more seating. Its a brick outdoor patio that is roofed over. Only downsides are the occasional long waits during prime summer hours and the prices seem to go up every year. Also sometimes they seem to charge for a cup of water which is ridiculous. Some of their dishes are a little disappointing. I didn't like the chili dishes or enchilada variants, so I'd recommend sticking with the tacos or nachos for your first time. Be sure to get some extra hot sauce no matter what you order. read more

Apparently a lot of people get drunk on the lake, walk to this place, and then promptly write a yelp review. This place was absolutely awful. The meat on the taco was absolutely dry, had no flavor, and wasn't close to anything spicy. On top of it, they put some kind of velveta like shredded cheese that made my stomach curl as soon as it was inserted in my mouth. I decided to move onto their version of chilquiles, which I cannot remember the name of. More of that awful cheese mixed in with a awful tasting green and red sauce. After I was done eating, I made it about ten minutes down the road before my body decided to expel it from my front across the highway while onlookers drove by. My friend had as similar experience with the other end of his body about two hours later. None of what they had was close to being Mexican. At least they could have called it the "Gringo's" Taco House, so I would have known that this stuff wasn't the true food. Won't be coming back. read more

The food is average and the line is long. Most of the craze seems to be from locals enjoy the atmosphere and nostalgia. As someone who is not from the area, I did not find the food that great and I did not see what all the fuss was about. I enjoyed eating outside and the process of ordering (stand in line, order, wait for your number to be called) is unique to the area. read more

I've been here a few times over the years. This last time I decided I am not going back. The food quality is just too low. My burrito was basically a soupy melted mess. Couldn't even pick it up. The food isn't authentic mexican food. Prices are cheap and atmosphere is fine. read more

5 points for me for great food, a laid-back atmosphere, cheap eats and nostalgia - I spent my childhood waiting all winter long for this place to open in the spring. I stick to the classic softshell and nachos with everything---including tons and tons of salsa. They should really consider bottling that stuff up. read more

Horrible!!! That's the best I can say. They didn't give us our complete take-out order (left out son/law's burrito) but charged us for it. Plus an overcharge of $5+ for no apparent reason. Had to go back the next morning to collect the $9.52 they owed me, Oh, and their cheese!! The WORST ever. Who ever heard of making Mexican food with American cheese (taste and texture like Velveeta!)? I ate very little of the food but my stomach hurt all night and most of the next day, too. We are from California, we KNOW Mexican food, and believe me, this isn't it! I can't understand the good ratings and the amount of business I saw there. It was absolutely the WORST Mexican food I've ever had anywhere, bar none. My advice....skip the Taco House and go a little farther up Hwy 71 to a great restaurant, Mineral City! read more

Ah yes, the Taco House. I'm 43 years old and have been going there since I was a kid. Back in the day, Taco House ruled. But, fast forward several decades later, the place just isn't what it used to be. I blame poor management and snotty teenagers. The downfall of any once great institution of fine dining. My complaints are the typical ones you'll find at a place overrun with summer help teens. No respect for the working establishment, no sense of pride in what they are putting together to serve. It's this kind of attitude that makes me think minimum wage might actually be too high. Although, if you are fortunate enough to come to this establishment and get some teens who aren't consistently smoking pot before and after work serving you, you just might get a reasonable, although not authentic, Mexican meal. If you're a first timer here, maybe a casual visit to the lakes region, then I'd suggest the hard shell tacos to play it safe. Your either gonna love em and crave em, or you're gonna hate em and run. And honestly, yes, there is a comparison to ANOTHER Taco place to be made here when it comes to the tacos... They taste very very similar to Amigo's tacos. My wife, being from Nebraska where there are Amigo's restaurants to be found everywhere, absolutely loves Taco House. She actually craves their soft shell tacos because she is an Amigo's freak. Now, the difference between Taco House and Amigo's, is Taco House doesn't add sour cream automatically on the taco, and the cheese on the soft shells are more like a sauce. Otherwise the taste, tortillas and texture is very similar with Taco House being less salty then Amigos, which is a good thing. The home made salsa is pretty good too. Personally, I like the green stuff. The rest of the menu is kind of "ehh". It's OK, I suppose. But for me personally, it's all about the tacos. I'll probably always be a fan of Taco House, I'm an Iowan so it's in my blood, but if I have to be 100% honest, it's NOT the best Mexican food you'll ever have. And just like the rating of 3 stars I am giving this says... It's just A-OK. read more
