Came here on the way out of town with my sister, bro-in-law, and their two kids. Why do so many people like this place? My thoughts ranged from "yucky" to "bleh." How crappy is it? Let me count the ways: 1) What is this I taste? American cheese? WTF? Who puts American cheese on Mexican food? What the hell is the matter with you? 2) Windows looking into the kitchen - big mistake. Place hasn't been cleaned since 1981. 3) Wait... wait... wait... 4) They can't be bothered to wipe down the tables, so my brother-in-law had to do it himself. Then he put napkins down so his kids didn't have to put their graham crackers directly on the disgusting table. 5) Did I mention we had to feed the kids graham crackers? Because we had to wait forever for our food and they got hungry. 6) At one point, my sister said, "I've never been in a restaurant where no one has their food." 7) Everyone looked miserable. Seriously, why do people come here? 8) My impression of the proprietors: "No, you can't have your drinks before you get your food. We don't care that that's the norm at every other restaurant in the country. We don't care that you've been waiting for calories and are so desperate that you've started drinking the hot sauce. We suck." 9) There are numbers, but they hand them out in random order (think, "48... 21... 17... 90...") because they hate their customers and want to screw with them. 10) ONE bathroom with ONE toilet. One. 11) Heart burn and diarrhea. Taco John's is better than this place. 12) I say again, Taco John's is better than this place. 13) Holy crap, the photos they have of the food on this site? Lies. Liars! That is not what it looks like at all. God, I hate you, Taco House. If you're forced to eat here, as I was, here are a few tips: bring something to wipe down your own table, like baby wipes or a bucket of boiling water. Just order the tacos. They can't screw those up. Probably. Expect all the other patrons to be rude and pushy because they're all hungry and pissed off. You WILL see at least a couple of tables full of miserable-looking obese people who are clearly only there because everything is coated in cheese. I'm sorry folks if you ever visit Okiboji you go to Taco House. There is no better Mexican food anywhere. Now having said that it, this is an acquired taste, as I know some people that don't like Taco House but they are borderline insane. I'm addicted and have been the last 15 years. This restaurant has been around for what 50 years and yet the recipes haven't changed even with the new owners. If I was on my deathbed this would be one of the meals I would demand. I am willing to drive 250 miles just to get Taco House that is how good I think Taco House is. French Food with beans: Why can't the Taco House fold a burrito? They roll them up like crepes and all the goo falls out. Yes, I called it goo. I could not find physical evidence that there was meat in my meat and bean burrito and the flavor was exquisitely generic. We were hoping for better luck with our guacamole, but were also disappointed. The guacamole contained only avocados and tomatoes and had no zip. The chips were three taco shells - no salt, no flavor. At least we could break them into the perfect size. I could say more, but basta. Eso es suficiente. Nunca voy a regresar. A lake Okoboji institution! My favs are Beef Quesadilla, Con Chili Burrito, Nachos with everything, taco supreme, and chicken enchilada. No, its not totally authentic mexican . . . its more of an American Mexican style. Salsa is homeade and Im not sure what they fry their corn chips in but it adds to the unique taste. So this place, is perfect. I am not looking for gourmet, I am not looking for pricey. I am looking for some sand on the floor and some cheap delicious tacos. Love this place. We come here every time we are in town. Chicken Chimichanga is the best with red and green salsa. Rancharitos are good. Wait is long for a reason, people. Chips and guacamole should not be a smashed avocado with a couple chunks of tomato served with store bought hard shell tacos broken in half, I was nearly appalled to see that on my tray and more disappointed when I tried to enjoy it anyways. Put some flavor on your avocados like lime and salt, can't just smash one and call it guacamole. On top of that, the nachos are regular chips so they obviously have them, it's a slap in the face to give people broken taco shells and call them chips. Anyways, I got my kids a cheese quesadilla, it was about the size of a taco bell soft taco and costed over $3 I think. My wife's grande burrito was pretty tiny as well. Last gripe is their ordering system, they call your number and you're expected to know what tray is yours and just hope they got it right, there's not really any accountability. It'd fix it easily by organizing their number system or at least putting a copy of your receipt and order number on your tray when it comes up. I gave it 2 stars because my "Mexican" salad was actually pretty good for $5. PS - I've eaten here 30+ times growing up and recently returned to try it for old time's sakes, sad to see it's gone so down hill, wouldn't recommend it. read more

Taco House was an extremely disappointing Mexican spot. It's pretty hard to mess up a quesadilla but they managed to do it with all 3 of our group's quesadillas. The service was super slow- it took 30 minutes to get all of our food and we didn't get everything we'd ordered the first time. We'd heard good things about Taco House, but the service was bad for some really mediocre/borderline bad Mexican food. If you are coming here during a normal meal hour, be prepared to wait. Taco House is always busy, a good sign in my opinion! My family and I have been coming here for about 7 years now, making a point to stop almost every time we visit this area. They have a very good hot sauce that they use in a lot of their food. Meh is about right. If this was in California I would have a C grade placed outside. When you order the food, you can get a good glimpse of the kitchen, which does not appear to be very tidy or clean. If you dine outside, be prepared for flies. The tortillas look store bought and taste store bought. Come to California or Arizona to taste real masa and lard made tortillas. Big difference. No tamales on the menu as well. How this place is so popular is beyond me. The most bland Mexican food ever, not even salted properly. No cilantro, no jalapeño or serano peppers, no onions, no heat. Even adding the "hot sauce" from the condiment bar didn't bring it up to average. The "chips" are stale taco shells. This is Okoboji nostalgia for me. As a child of the 80s, I can remember going to Arnolds Park to enjoy some rides, stopping to get some Salt Water Taffy, and then getting my burrito at the Taco House. Now, I go visit the lakes a few times a year and I always stop in for some nachos, tacos, or tostadas. The food has not changed at all! While it is not the best/most authentic Mexican food you'll find, the salsa is what takes it to the next level. I wish they'd bottle it to market nation-wide! The lines are always long but the added-on dining room (and family-friendly bathroom) is a plus. read more

We have only been here twice but enjoyed it both times. Recommend it more for lunch than dinner, and even at that, go EARLY (I think they open at 10 AM). We tried on a Sunday around 11:45 and the line was already out the door. I've had the sample platter and loved it; this time I had the burrito grande with a side of rice, beans and salad...I could have skipped the extra add-ons as the burrito was HUGE! I was STUFFED! If you have the time and are willing to stand in line and then wait for your food, the taco house really IS good. Our favorite menu items are the beef & bean burrito and the taco grande... But I feel like you really can't go wrong. Everything is usually cheesy, creamy and delicious. The problem is, they are pretty much ALWAYS busy in the summer and there is no listed phone number to call ahead or order to go. They give you a number to wait for your food and the numbers are not in chronological order so you really have no idea how long you might wait for your food but you usually have to expect 20-45 minutes AFTER you've already stood in the long line to order in the first place. And as summer goes on, more and more flies are swarming around the sticky tables outside. So come before you're super hungry, do a drive-by and check out how many cars are in the parking lot (and lined up on the road) and have a back-up plan just in case the line is wrapped around the entire restaurant and out the door. Or try 4pm or 11am or a time that wouldn't be as busy. read more

5 Stars for food, but maybe not for ambiance. I have been coming here since I was a baby so the nostalgia of the place makes up for the lack of ambiance. The Taco House is historic in Boji and doesn't need ambiance. Food is amazing - if you haven't been the nachos and beef quesadilla are a must. Other faves include the traditional soft shell taco, all meat burrito and my personal fave the Racherito. Only negative - in the past year, they have changed their feelings on "to go" hot sauce. They used to give you a big cup with your order. They now give you one small container for each menu item you order and charge additional if you want more which is absolutely ridiculous. We come here fairly often in the summer, I know people who live out of the area and consider this a must stop while they're here. This place came highly recommended for our trip to Okoboji so we had to try it. On our way a local at one of the nearby shops told us to stick with the tacos and beef and cheese nachos and skip the rest. She was right! The soft tacos and beef and cheese nachos were good. We were disappointed with the chicken taco and "chips" (broken stale taco shells) and guac (very bland). We were here on a weeknight around 5pm and the wait wasn't long at all.
