We picked up food today and were very happy with our food! When I came in someone immediately helped me and they were very attentive, I order queso and chips and noticed they poured the queso right before they gave me order which I loved to make sure the queso stays hot and warm! My husband is from Texas we are queso snobs and we loved this queso! We also ordered chicken burritos (we both enjoyed them)! And the horchata (nothing too special but does the job!) Not recommended. The quality of the food is so hit or miss. When it's a miss, it's a miss by a mile. When ordering delivery, every other order has a missing item or an item that is open / unwrapped in the bag. Overall, there is no flavor palate. When it's at its best the food is pretty bland. Believe it or not it is very hard to find an authentic and delicious tasting Mexican restaurant around Chicago, specifically the downtown area. Living in the South Loop its even harder unless I venture off into the Pilsen area and even then its honestly a hit or miss (most times its a miss). And being understanding about the pandemic, I've seen prices rise at these restaurants and the taste to me just match up with the price. But not at Taco Lulu. Hands down the best and super massive carne asada torta I have ever had. My boyfriend drools over their al pastor tacos. The flavor in each of their menu items is, not to be dramatic, extraordinary. This makes sense as we met the owner of the restaurant, Michael, and you can tell he really pours his heart into his craft. I mean c'mon the place is named after his dog, Lulu! Michael and his staff are so friendly as well! He came by our table to chat with us a bit and even gave a few samples bites of ground beef and the barbacoa (the perfect amount of flavor and tenderness). I would highly recommend everyone give this spot a try! If I haven't convinced you with the food, keep in mind their happy hour (4pm-6pm)...$8 margarita (bomb-dot-com) and bottomless chips and salsa! Overall terrible experience, the food was over priced and salty yet too spicy for no reason. While there they took way longer than they should have to make four chicken burritos. Meanwhile everyone ordered after us got there food first. And to top it all off the guy who take the food order behind the register made a prejudice comment about how everyone in my dining party looked like we all have "the same noses". Disappointing, but the queso is crack and crack is whack! Tried the pork, chicken and steak tacos, but the builder got the order wrong even though the ticket screamed LULU STYLE. Instead of pico de gallo (LULU Style) I got fast food shredded lettuce, 'tomato' and cheese. Sadly I didn't find this out until I got home and waited for dinner time to eat it. The pork was mushy as was the chicken. The steak was properly cooked and seasoned but again, ruined by the toppings. I MIGHT go back and see if the steak taco LULU style can be had. I ordered food from Taco Lulú once or twice per week. The food is delicious! I work nearby. The employees are normally pleasant and accommodating. However, today the manager/owner, Mike, was very mean-spirited towards me, a loyal customer. I was told by the manager that he lose money every time I order and that he is tired of me asking if there are any discounts. I asked if there are any specials not discounts. I have ordered several times and did not mention the special of the week and was charged the regular price. The manager told me that they are going out of business and not making much money in a sarcastic manner before I placed my order. He seemed extremely annoyed by my presence in his restaurant. I told the manager and another employee that I did not receive my entire order. The manager got angry and told me that I "throw his kitchen out of wack on at least eight (8) different occasions in the past. In other words, my orders are difficult for the cooks to understand. I have been ordering the same food since the restaurant grand opening. I questioned the amount of steak that was placed in a cup that came with my tostado and the manager got angrier. He told me that I will not receive a larger portion of steak in the small container. I asked for a refund and Juan got angry and tossed the food I ordered in the trash. I generally ask for only the steak to be placed on the side, and rice instead of beans. I do not eat any meat, but I order food for my husband to eat later in the day. My husband likes to microwave the meat.I am still hurt from being yelled at and humiliated in front of other customers. Wow. I loved my dinner so much. They have vegetarian options on the menu so you don't have to try and customize something to avoid meat. I love that the menu is small- they know how to keep it simple but the food is absolutely outstanding. The rice, beans, and pico de gallo were exceptionally fresh even though I ordered an hour before closing!! My burrito was sooo overstuffed and I couldn't even finish it. I never leave reviews. These tacos were so disappointing I felt inspired. I ordered the "pastor," it looked/tasted like ground pork with beans mixed in, and all the wrong flavor. The platillo was just a little pile of the meat with tortillas on the side. I asked for onions and cilantro and instead got a large pile of lettuce/tomato with a little onion and cilantro on top. The rice tasted like standard Goya seasoning. For $11 I was mad at how bad this was. Just go to Taco Bell if you want this kind of "Mexican" food and you'll get something cheaper and more flavorful. read more
