Pleasantly surprised by my lunch deliveries. I don't think this is too different from what you'd find in similar places. But here, the ingredients have been fresh, and the food is well-cooked and flavorful without being overly salty/MSG'd. Also the portions are pretty generous. Even with tax, fees, and tip, a little over $20 gets you a ton of food, in a combination of a larger thing (burrito, nachos, torta) with a smaller item (tostada/sides/tacos). They don't skimp on the proteins either. The only thing I don't love are the free salsas that are always included in my order. They have been a little inconsistent - sometimes the green is bland, sometimes the red is spicy yet flavorless. I don't mind too much, but if you do, maybe this is a dealbreaker for you. I don't know. I'm generally not too picky for lunch and like to try new places, but I find myself craving a saucy burrito + a side from here when I'm feeling really hungry. And since I'm not leaving reviews for mediocre and below-average places during COVID, I've honestly just stopped writing most reviews. It's been rare to find casual lunch spots places worth giving 4 or 5 stars for. But Taco Lulu is a keeper! Definitely a nice lunch option I could recommend in good conscience. read more

Their payment system was great--went through super quick. (We were initially going to eat Thai food but the online payment system wasn't working.) This place texted multiple times to let us know when the food was ready to pick up so there wasn't an awkward waiting time. The serving sizes are pretty big and filling. The fries are to die for! Taco LuLu is good every time I have visited. Which is often because I work downtown Chicago. One minor issue I have with them is missing ingredients from my orders a couple of times. Inside the restaurant is basic as it relates to cleanliness, decor and customer service. read more

We had the food delivered and it was on time and they were very organized. The owner, Michael, called me to see how everything went. Unfortunately he called before our food was scheduled to be delivered so I didn't have any feedback for him. But the fact that he called to check on the satisfaction of his customer speaks a lot. I was super impressed with this place and will definitely be back in the future! As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the owner who was warm and welcoming. I had placed an order online and while I was waiting he generously offered me a sample of their new margaritas. He then showed me around the restaurant and told me that it's actually named after his dog Lulu which made me like the place even more. The restaurant had a great indoor atmosphere and they just opened up an outdoor seating area as well. I would return in the future just based on the service alone. I ordered the pastor marinated pork taco, Picadillo ground beef taco, and the picadillo chicken taco. All of the meat was tender and incredibly seasoned. The tacos were loaded and all the ingredients were fresh. Rice and beans were so tasty as well. I had zero complaints whatsoever. One of the best taco joints I've found in the city. Best taco place in the loop/ West loop. I got the pastor and steak tacos and both were delicious! They have amazing sweet lemonade, as well. My food came out within 5 minutes and the owner is so kind and nice! It feels like your cozy neighborhood taco joint. The ambiance is really fun yet cozy all at the same time. I will have to come back with some friends on the weekends! In the meantime, it's a great place for lunch while working in the loop! During COVID, very few places were open in the Loop, where I live. I walked to Taco Lulú but found that I had arrived after it has closed for the day. Still, the owner came outside and asked if I had ordered food but told him I did but got there too late. And, despite these desperate economic times -- which surely have affected the restaurant -- the owner brought me inside and gave me extra food he had, absolutely free. By the way he gave me a Oaxacan Tamale covered in plaintain leaves which was very tasty! Again, thanks for the awesome food! Chicago has your back when things return to normal. read more

In what is the former Al's beef is now a really good taco place. Granted this is Chicago so there are a lot of good taco places, but there aren't that many in this particular area, so you should try it. The owner is a great guy and we had time to talk about his place, since I thought what does this Polish guy know about tacos? His recipes are the genuine deal. He states a few of them are from "a Mexican grandpa/abuelo" and when he explained what he does with the al pastor, it sounded legit. I had what I call a "royal sampler" which is just about one of each kind of taco. The way I like them, just onion and cilantro. The tomatillo sauce is the right kind of heat. A smokiness and heat are in the red sauce. Arrachera/skirt steak was tender with a nice marinade hint to it. Chorizo had that slight grease hint of heat/spice to it. Pastor is very subtle fruitiness. Chicken had a damp wetness to it which soaked into my tortilla, but it also tasted good. Portions are good, you can barely pinch the top of the tortillas closed as they are filled with meats. Horchata was also pretty good, considering there isn't that many ingredients in horchata! Refried beans were awesome. And his queso, you can tell, is from scratch. No cans of cheese food to opened with a can opener here. All in all, a great little taco place with an owner who really learned all he could about it before he closed up Al's and redid the whole thing. In order for you to gauge my opinion, Sabas Vegas is by far the best carnitas. One of my other favorite taco places is La Pasadita. If you know/like these places, you should like Taco Lulu. read more

This is the kind of taco shop that does one thing well - stewed meats. You don't go to this taco shop for creativity or for the veggie taco or for some other menu item besides tacos, imho. You go for the relatively inexpensive (for the loop) and filling meal. The chorizo (they call it al pastor for some reason) and steak tacos are the best. The corn tortillas, onions and cilantro taste fresh. Tacos are $3 a pop, unless you get their $1 off coupon. Atmosphere (there are tables) is modern but quite casual. It feels a little like if your favorite hot dog joint got a fresh upgrade - white brick, some industrial touches, etc. I would go here with my coworkers or to take someone visiting downtown who would like a filling, hot meal on the cheaper side. I stopped in here because it's next to my school, it used to be an Al's beef. It has since been nicely transformed into a taqueria with a forthcoming bar. The inside and outside looks much better than it used to. The menu is pretty basic taco and burrito type things, with the standard chicken, steak, pastor and chorizo. I tried the taco salad with al pastor, as it was advertised as being marinade-d in-house. I must say the meat quality was better than expected, and the flavor decent. Portion size was good but I'm not quite sure as large as a Chipotle burrito bowl. The toppings included beans, cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce and sour cream, plus two salsas on the side, the green being decently spicy and the red being just okay. I liked the texture of the taco shell bowl it came in, nice and crispy on the outside but a little soft on the inside. Cost came to $10 after taxes, which is slightly higher than or equal to Chipotle or other create-your-own-bowl places. What really made this a four star review was the friendly owner who greeted me and even showed me the renovated dining room. Finally! A casual burrito joint with some real Mexican flavors near my work. Adios, Chipotle! Had an arrachera (carne asada) burrito with guacamole added, total was $10. Had I gotten another meat and not added guac it would have been $8. This burrito was large and in charge, and had all the flavors I am used to in the industrial neighborhood taquerias in California. Nice ambience, they did a great job upgraded the seating and decor since it was an Al's Beef. I didn't taste/see the guac. Not sure if they didn't put it in or if it was just a tiny amount. No real complaints though; it was still much better than any other burritos I have tried in the area. And for the huge size, the price was definitely right. Green salsa was a bit sweet for my taste, will try the red next time or make it a Lulu with pico. But I will definitely make this a weekly lunch spot. read more

Was around the area and I love having great tacos and see this spot call ((Taco Lulu )) right away got my attention. When walking in it looks like a simple fast food place for a big establishment. I had the order of 3 Tacos each taco is $3 dollars. Now it depends if you want to add sides like beans and Guacamole making the cost change by $1. I was not to empress by the presentation how 3 tacos we just slap on a plate and not really care for how it looks. I usually like to post pictures so want it to be fear to the restaurant and definitely did a little adjusting so I can take a picture of the food. I still had not tasted to give it my honest opinion. I have to mention the meat was very tender and juicy that definitely changed my opinion but I believe as much as I eat out I feel food still needs to look good to eat that is just my opinion. Got an order for pickup. Presentation - 4/10 Picked up for delivery & had 3 tacos, a side of pico de gallo, and a side of rice in what was sized as a lunch bag. Definitely wouldn't hurt to up their to-go , delivery & pickup packaging. Due to the stacking & small bag, the pico de gallo juice pretty much got on everything & soaked the bag. Both of tacos were wrapped together and in the same foil & paper, which seemed cheap to me. At bare minimum I would have expected them to be wrapped in their own paper. Food - 4/10 I got 2 pork tacos & my friend got 1 steak, both with flour shells. Their taco shell was greasy & there wasn't really much cilantro flavor in the taco. My taco was missing cheese (I did confirm my order twice - once over the phone & once in person). The meat also didn't taste fresh, so I assume it was from a hot pan. By the time I got to the food it was just about room temperature. My "spanish rice" (pictured) was hardly so. Overall - 40% Would have been better off making my own tacos at home. read more

It was my first trip here and had high hopes since it's right next to our new building. I had a burrito al pastor ($8) and I ordered chips and salsa. The al pasor was ok but not great. The food was fresh but I was looking for more flavor. All of the burrito competition in the Loop has gotten me used to getting "fajita peppers and onions" which isn't an option here. I ordered chips and salsa ($3) but was told I only needed to pay for the chips ($2) since the salsa was on the table. It's odd to me that the salsa (red or green) was in bottles like you'd get at other burrito joints. In my mind, those are sauces. Salsa should be chunkier and you should dip it, not squirt it. (you feelin me?) I grew up in Summit, Chicago's epicenter for burritos and home of El Famos and El Faro or "Burrito Heaven" so my expectations are high. I will go back and try the arrachera. Not recommended. The quality of the food is so hit or miss. When it's a miss, it's a miss by a mile.
