Wife and I went here for Taco Tuesday at the recommendation of several friends. I'm glad we did. Nice, roomy place, full bar available, plenty of seating too. They brought the obligatory chips and salsa to start . The salsa was good! The chips? Not so much. Wife ordered shrimp tacos (with rice and refried beans). I ordered ground beef tacos (with rice and refried rice beans. Wife really liked her tacos. Two huge tacos stuffed and good sized shrimp tails on them. She said she'd order them again. I was "so-so" on my beef tacos. They were huge but there was something about them that has me debating if I would order them again. I might go with the chimichanga next time. To be honest, I'm a Texan and it's been a chore finding anything to compare with Tex-Mex . This has been one of two that might come close. So I'd encourage anyone to try this place. I will stress CAUTION though. 1) If you use the side entrance from the parking lot. Be VERY CAREFUL!! There a 2 step downs at the door to enter the place. If it's sunny outside, you will have to adjust your vision quickly to the darker inside and trip over can easily happen. 2) the restrooms are in B a very narrow hallway and the doors are heavy and spring loaded. Taco Mama - The Tamale Tip That Paid Off We were midway through an early dinner at Cafe 1217 when a local picking up takeout struck up a conversation and started passionately recommending Taco Mama next door. Specifically, the tamales. You could tell this wasn't casual advice, this was a mission. So, naturally, we listened. On our way out of town toward Texas, we grabbed half a dozen to-go, planning to turn them into a road trip breakfast with friends. Risky? Maybe. Worth it? Absolutely. Big hit. The masa was just right, great texture, good flavor, holding everything together without stealing the show. The sauces were outstanding, especially the red one, which brought a solid kick without overwhelming things. By the next morning, we looked like heroes. We got there at 11am. A little busy. Waitress had too many tables. Our drinks never got refilled. I never got my water. The bloody Maria was spicy but it did not taste like it had any alcohol in it. No tajin on the rim. Served with 2 green olives, lemon and lime wedge. They sure do love their Chipotle cream. It was on most items. The birria taco was a huge disappointment. It had green and red peppers. Cilantro could not be removed. The puffy tacos were the size of street tacos. We were charged $10 for a tiny bowl of guacamole. Maybe 1/2 an avocado. That's ridiculous. Great spot for some yummy Mexican! Had the shrimp Diablo quesadilla, it was good, not enough diablo for me. I like it hot. Though the shrimp were good sized and cooked well. Also had one of the potato wrapped jalapeños with the strawberry hot jelly. YUM!! That was very unique and delicious, I highly recommend. The service was great and the spot was cute. Thankfully our party of four came in at 5:20 on a Saturday evening right before the rush. They serve fresh chips and salsa. We love salsa and they just kept it rolling! As we were eating our dinner we saw no table was empty. Our waiter Brad was working so hard. He really is a champ. We forgot to order their carrot cake after we paid for our bill so we walked up to the counter nearby the open kitchen and saw Brad working hard trying to get other peoples orders. You can tell Brad has really great work ethic and no matter what he does in life he's going to be excellent at it. read more

Order was given prior to 2 pm and then we were told since she took too long to get order in system we couldn't which was fine but the manager declined to credit us the difference. My family was looking for places with plant-based options since one of us in the party does not eat meat, and this restaurant popped up. They have an enormous menu with some decent veggie options and many kinds of meat. We tried the shrimp tacos and fish tacos (mahi mahi), and at $13 each including rice and beans, the meal ends up being pretty affordable. I got the specialty crispy cauliflower tacos which had a variety of textures and flavors. Everything came out in about 15 minutes. Everyone loved the tacos and beans. However, the rice was not fully cooked and not fresh with many hard-to-chew, uncooked grains. There is free salsa and chips for the table, but the salsa we got was quite spicy! I guess tacos are their specialty though, and they certainly do them well! Personally wish they would have more vegetarian/vegan options and I think they would taste really good here, but I know that's not their primary audience. Service was okay; our waitress seemed tired and wasn't always available/visible when needed to order food or get the bill, but she was fine for the most part. read more

Amazing tacos and enchiladas!! The meats are top notch, seasoned well and tender! We had the shredded beef, ground beef, and pork all were excellent! Cute place, super casual, friendly waitstaff. We started with the guacamole and chips, which was really good. Definitely freshly made, nice consistency, not totally smooth, had some nice small chunks in it and fresh tomatoes on top. Very tasty. Had an enchiladas verde which was very good. Also ordered a combo plate of chorizo puffy taco and brisket enchilada, but excellent. Refried beans were good, and rice was also a little different than the usual yellow Spanish rice. I come here with friends all the time. We get drinks and occasionally get food. We always tip fantastically whenever it's time to tab out. Anyways, we walk in and the hostess tells the server that we are sitting outside and she will be serving us... I kid you not, she said "oh munches" and then rolled her eyes. Munches is not a nice term in Spanish and my friends and I knew it's because she did not want to serve us. We won't be coming here again as it felt personal and we seemed to be a "problem" for her. Picked this place based on Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. Thank you fellow Yelpers! Was in town for vacation and looking for good Mexican food on Cinco de Mayo. Taco Mama was busy but they got us seated right away. Chips and salsa were good. We asked for the "hot" salsa and were treated to samples of fire roasted, green and habanero. All were flavorful with varying levels of heat. I ordered the grilled shrimp tacos and they were amazing! Shrimp was grilled to perfection, with crispy cabbage, Pico de Gallo, crema and an avocado wedge. (See pic.) Hubs ordered shrimp and crab enchiladas and ate every bite. If we ever return to Hot Springs, Arkansas, we will definitely return to Taco Mama. read more

Best food in Hot Springs! I visit this little town for its hot natural spring waters, hence the name. I've tried all of the 5 star spots but Taco Mama's is by far the TRUE best place to eat. Everything is homemade and fresh! The Homemade corn tortilla's for tacos served up with slow cooked brisket and veggie tacos are exquisite! This place makes an authentic Mexican style salsa combined with some dried hot yummy chiles and high quality salsa chips. We are in from out of town, and this meal was a major disappointment. Pros: 1. We were seated quickly, after being told at anotger restaurant that there was an hour wait (maybe this should have been a sign?). 2. The chicken tortilla soup and chips and salsa were pretty good. 3. The beer was in a tall glass and nice and cold. Cons: The major cons revolve around service. The rest of the food we ordered was fine--not great, but fine. 1. It took quite a while for the waitress to come take our drink order. We were actually ready to put our full order in at this time, but there's only one thing at a time here. 2. The waitress couldnt bring our beer, so someone else had to (maybe she was underage?). This took forever. I couldnt even finish my neer because I got it so late. 3. Part of the food was delivered. No tortillas for fajitas. No chicken toritlla soup, no plates, etc. This went on forever, and I thought we were neing punked. Like one thing would be delievered (the soup), but with no spoon to eat ot with, etc, etc. 4. My young son ordered chips with melted cheese. They charged $9. I am attaching a picture.
