It felt impossible to get back to our seat at any point in time, or to figure out where the line began/where to wait for our food. Although I enjoyed our margaritas, the tacos (even though they were described as "chipotle") were incredibly bland and underwhelming on the flavor end of things. Two entrees, chips and salsa, and two drinks came out to nearly $98 including tip, which I found to be ridiculous considering the mediocre quality of the food. What I did love was the free salsa bar--everything was delicious and it's a nice touch. Glad to see that they've added a bar, too. We decided to try this spot on a Friday evening and walked in around 745 pm. Almost every table was taken, and even the bar was still full (they close at 9pm). Our order came out under ten minutes. The tacos are decent sized, and the chicken and shrimp are tender and flavorful. They loaded mine with cilantro (THANK GOD!!!) Also, just a note that it can get a bit crowded and loud during the dinner rush. As far as the parking, it's in a quiet area of South Portland and street parking usually isn't hard to find. We love Taco Trio! I can't believe I haven't reviewed it before. Their food is consistently amazing. I've tried lots of Mexican places and we use Taco Trio as the measuring stick. Our food was fantastic and came out quickly. The staff was very friendly and helpful, too. We learned that one co-owner recently died, which is very sad - they have committed to keeping up the quality that Manny demanded. The decor is really cool. Cafe style with a Mexican flair. We were in South Portland, looking for a quick bite to eat and decided on Taco Trio. The place is counter service with the option to sit at the bar so it's pretty casual. The menu has a lot of options but something's were priced just a little high. We did an order of the shrimp tacos and a chicken California burrito. They provide cups for the help yourself salsa bar, which was probably our favorite part. We love the mango salsa and the red mild salsa. We weren't wowed by the food. The shrimp tacos were decent, not overfilling. The shrimp was overcooked and coated in a lot of their sauce. The California burrito was not a California burrito as I lived there for 16 years and have had many in my life. It was filled with too many black beans and they're using fried potatoes instead of french fries, not to mention the chicken was overcooked and it was fairly small for the price. An authentic slice of Mexico in Maine! I was thoroughly impressed by how great this taqueria is. Their tacos and enchiladas were a true highlight, as was the incredible salsa bar with a fresh variety of pineapple, mango, habanero, and fresca salsas. There were also a great variety of vegetarian options that offered squash, fried cojita, beans, avocado as filling alternatives. We also tried the strawberry tres leches which had a nice flavor, but was a little more dense than others I've tried. Would definitely recommend the haddock tacos!! I'd come back just for those. The food is good for sure. The carne asada burrito very consistent good. I do have a problem with the pricing of some of the extras. A side of guac and guac in the burrito added like $13. That seems pretty steep, especially considering it was a 5 ounce side of guac. read more

The reviews were mixed but we gave it a shot as the location was just a 7 minute drive from the Lyric theater. Everything was organized at the ordering counter and the bar. Admittedly, I forget about Taco Trio sometimes. Not because it isn't good (It's great), but because they have been a staple for so long that I sort of take them for granted. That's on me, though, because this is an excellent local restaurant run by a great family. And it says something that they have been around for so long and have even survived (And expanded!) through COVID. The front counter area is a bit crowded and busy because the door opens right up into it. It's efficient but it does mean making your selection and order can be a little awkward if there are others waiting. After the counter, though, there's plenty of space inside to sit down and there are even several tables outside along the building. The food was great. Like I said, it had been a while for me, so I decided to keep it simple and go for a few tacos. I will say that $6-$6.50 feels steep for a single taco. However, I have watched and listened to many chefs say that the idea that Mexican food should be quick and cheap is a huuuge misconception. So, while I'm no food expert, I think that's something to consider, and of course I understand that prices these days for raw materials have increased considerably. Ultimately it's certainly not a cost prohibitive level at this point. I had the Pollo con Mole (Chicken with mole sauce), Taco al Pastor (Pork and pineapple), and the Barbacoa (BBQ goat) Tacos. My favorite by far was the goat. I'm a sucker for Tacos al Pastor so that was good, and the chicken with mole was great. I got an extra order of chips because I didn't realize the tacos came with chips. So heads up on that if you want some chips with your meal. One of the things I was most excited about was the Agua Fresca. Basically it's a fruit juice. They make those and horchata (rice milk) in house with rotating flavors. The agua fresca was strawberry when I got it and it was absolutely delicious. I definitely need to keep Taco Trio in mind the next time I'm hungry for some takeout. Went in at 6:30 on a Saturday night with a couple. Maybe I hadn't had Mexican in a while, or it was just that good...I had a chicken burrito that was fabulous. Serving size was huge (it absolutely could have been shared) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Meals come with chips, and there are some sauces too. We ordered guacamole and it was delish also. My companions had tacos and a special and enjoyed theirs as well. The only downside was the noise. Loud music and high ceilings and it was a bit overwhelming. Oh man, TT has upped their game. Now that I work over near this restaurant, I have absolutely gained 10-15 Taco Trio pounds, and every single one has been worth it. They have an online ordering system that's super easy. Note there is a convenience fee, and their menu items are a bit pricey. But when you see the size of the items and the quality of the ingredients, it makes sense. I love the quesadillas. These are not regular quesadillas- these are gigantic, delicious, ingredient packed cheese platters and I LOVE THEM. They have several veggie options too - mushroom and jalapeno? Yes please! Their burritos are enormous, their tacos are delicious. You really can't go wrong. Sometimes the wait can be a little long - but that's because the secret is out on how good they are. GET. THE. ARBOL. SAUCE. It is so good. All of them are. I'm drooling over this place now. It's worth every penny spent and every pound gained. They have a salsa for everyone, and a dish for everyone! Street parking in the area was easy to grab here. I was caught off guard when I walked into a counter-service with such a large menu. They were fairly busy and the line had a definitely flow to it, in a way that I didn't feel like it was an option to just "hang out" until I made my decision. Under pressure, I ordered a Pastor Quesadilla ( pork and pineapple) to go because we didn't have much time and would probably be eating half now, half later. They gave me a buzzer and I made my way to the next stop-- the condiment bar. I don't know how I feel about buffet style. On one hand it's cool because you can take however much you want and try new things ... on the other hand I'm kind of disgusted by it because I don't know who may have sneezed or coughed nearby or who's dirty fingers may have grazed the food prior to me getting there. After about 10-15 minutes, the food was done. I opened the box to find a quesadilla that was not crisped at all and was sitting in a pool of greasy juice from the pork drippings. I'm not sure what happened here. I'm seeing stellar reviews, but I just didn't have that experience. Maybe I didn't order what their speciality is? I had been craving Mexican food up in Maine and I went out of my way to come here and try it--and WOW IT WAS GREAT! Really reminded me of classic home style Mexican, even got enchiladas and they weren't dry like so many places do. I realized I should take a picture but I was already almost done with my plate! They made menu suggestions and even sent someone out to the grocery store to buy plantains because my son wanted them and the ones they had weren't ripe enough to serve. I've been going to this Taco Trio since its old location where my brother and I would beg our dad to buy us their Horchata that they make in house. It has been years now and they have since moved to their larger well deserved location down the street. The food is just as good, their pico is some of the freshest I have ever had and I will seriously eat it out of the cup as I wait for my favorite local burrito. The Cali Plain is my favorite if I'm being honest- it's a staple go to burrito that has it all. I think the service has never been anything special but the staff is always nice and the food arrives relatively quickly each time I visit. I do love the set up of the new location as it is a much nicer feel with the addition of the full bar. Way more seating too, my mom and I never know where to sit. Mom doesn't like the girl in the back of the restaurant it allegedly creeps her out. Overall a place that made and makes my childhood. Love it. read more

When you walk in, you are right at the counter to order and very small space in-between for a line. I felt over whelmed/ pressured to right away or in someone way trying to figure out what I wanted looking at the sign inside. Luckily, there is a huge one outside you can look at before going in for more space to breathe. Service was minimal talking and just gave us a buzzer to pick up the food at the window when ready. It's open seating and plenty of space to pick from. Beautiful colors inside and out decorated. I wasn't a huge fan of the open salsa/condiment bar as thinking of other people freely grabbing is gross to me. If you wanted a drink, you had to grab it from the cooler machine off to the side of the counter too. My Burrito tasted good, but I just didn't have the crazy wow factor I was looking for. I went to taco trio on a weekday and ordered my food sometime between 630 and 6:45 PM. They have a small menu so it didn't take long to decide. I decided to get the three tacos. Each little taco is $6.50. if you purchase three they give you $1.50 discount. That's $18 for three tacos à la cart. Does not come with rice or beans. An order of rice is five dollars and an order of beans is also five dollars. However, you can do half and half for five dollars as well which is what I did. My total came to $25 for 3 tacos with the discount, rice and beans (about a cup volume wise together) and no drink. and Just Three. Little. Tacos. I was told they came with chips and salsa. The catch is that you have to wait for the tacos to come out to get your chips. So I waited. And waited. And waited some more. At about 7:30 PM they called my name. I had just waited around 40 minutes for three tacos. The tacos were OK. Small but OK. I ordered two shrimp tacos and one fish taco. The fish was fried and tasted a little stale honestly. Definitely did not taste like they had just fried it. However, the two shrimp tacos were really good. Small. But good. It turns out the "chips and salsa" is a handful of chips scattered on top of the tacos. I counted nine chips. The one cool thing is there's salsa bar that you can go up and get what you want. Overall, I had a bad experience. I was annoyed at the exorbitantly long wait time. The quality of the fish taco was not good and the overall price of the meal is just way too much in my opinion. Based on this experience, I definitely would not recommend it. Especially to any budget conscious diners out there. I don't think I will be back. read more

Excellent Mexican food! I'm originally from a town in California that has a MASSIVE Hispanic/Mexican community - I'm no stranger to legit Mexican cooking. This place tastes just like back home. The restaurant is clean, the Aqua Fresca is delicious, and I *love* the giant photo of Frida on the wall. So far we've tried the tacos al pastor (husband says they're the best he's had outside of Mexico), the calabazas asadas tacos, the pollo asado sopes, and the pollo asado burrito. Taco Trio has a wonderful variety of fresh made salsas available at the salsa bar, including salsa verde, mango salsa, pico de gallo, a habanero blend, and many more. The 3 for $9 taco trio comes with a small side of chips. I got the pastor which is a slow-cooked pork with pineapple BBQ-style sauce, the barbacoa, and the pescado - a wonderful fresh fried haddock taco with hints of fresh lime and some sour cream on top. I historically don't like corn tortillas, most likely because I rarely find good ones. The two corn tortillas each taco is wrapped in are very fresh, soft, and tasty. We went from excited for dinner to wildly disappointed in a matter of minutes tonight. We got a takeout order of a vegetable quesadilla, a carne asada and mixed bean burrito, and elote. We live less than 10 minutes away and got there to pick it up ahead of their estimated time to try to make sure things would stay hot/warm by the time it hit our table Nothing about this order was good. Everything was cold and soggy. Not just a little damp, like WET. The cheese on the quesadilla had recongealed and the tortilla just fell apart because it was so wet. She only are a few bites and discarded it. The burrito was similar. The tortilla couldn't stay in tact to hold anything in because it was so soggy. The steak was chewy and stringy and tasted overly meaty instead of being flavorful. I only ate about half of it and that's only because I was hungry. And the elote was just plain disappointing. The corn was cold and literally soaking wet like it had just been removed from a pot of water and not dried at all. And it was lacking flavor. Not nearly enough cotija or spices. Just kinda wet corn rolled in mayo and spritzed with a bit of flavor. Ate a couple bites and disappointedly discarded. And the sour cream we paid for was not included in the bag. I understand that the establishment is trying to cater to the local palate, but in doing that there is something lacking in the food. I lived in Portland and found my taco place in Portland.
