Picked up an art museum free pass at the library on Friday in prep for this weekend of cold weather. Stopped in today (Sunday) a little after they opened at 10- parking was free on Pac Ave. we were greeted warmly at the front entrance and given a quick explanation of current exhibits. Surprisingly it was pretty empty with the entire first gallery all to ourselves and one docent! Toddler loved the art and climbing on the benches and generally loved the spaces and stairs and sculptures. It was our first time visit and it was a great option for us today! We loved how the galleries had a very organized way to wander through them and enjoyed the view from the Microsoft Overlook (where we also had a snack) before leaving. Walking through took a little over an hour without stopping to read too much (again, kid art museum visit speed). We look forward to coming again and making this a stop when we have visitors, too.

Enjoyed the large collection of Native American paintings. Dry large collection of glass and local artists. It has some interactive exhibits. You can cover it in one hour.

It's smaller than I thought, but you can tell there's is a lot of work and thought put into the exhibits. The art are nicely displayed and there are staff around to ask questions. There's a lot of space to maintain social distancing and admiring the art. I wish there were more exhibits opened. Parking is $2 an hour or $12 for the whole day. The exhibit took us around an hour.

Such a beautiful Art galley! I really enjoyed my visit here which happened to be the opening day for the Simpsons exhibit. Because of this they had free donuts and coffee. This new exhibit is great because it shows the guidelines and steps that the artists follow when drawing for this cartoon. They have lots of funny moments from the show posted throughout this exhibit. There is art here everyone can enjoy. They have historical, impressionist, and modern pieces. They have a exhibit dedicated to glass art too. On the top floor they have a little library and an outdoor seating area that has a great view of Mount Rainier. Only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is it's a bit expensive for not being a large art galley. You pay to park it's only $2 but then tickets are around $20 a person.

The Tacoma Art Museum is okay. It seems like an awfully small art museum. It doesn't seem to take long to get through it at all. With that said the exhibits that they bring in are solid. TAM brings in a fair amount of diverse art from paintings, sculptures, and such. If memory serves this is a participating museum where on the third Thursday of each month it is a free museum day. To me that is a great program to have once a month! Otherwise any typical day the entrance fee is $15. To me that is just a bit steep for what you get but I guess it all boils down to how bad you want to see a certain exhibit. There are some permanent art sculptures here that are actually quite fascinating visually! There are a number of art museums in the Seattle-Tacoma metro area, not including art galleries so that fact that Tacoma has it's own art museum is actually pretty cool!

This museum only needed an hour of parking, but it was nice to have a shaded lot. This museum had showcased glass and Native American art and more. We very much enjoyed the exhibits and would recommend this place.

To help soften the blow, they have lowered admission price in the interim. The hot shop is also still open and you can watch live glass making there. There are a few exhibit cases on view. There are lots of fun works that kids' designed that are also on view on the main lobby and down the hall. We went for a glass making class, which was tons of fun. I'm sure attendance varies widely - ours was not crowded. The person monitoring the class, Audrey, was friendly; she explains everything and then you have at it. She is there to help, which includes cutting glass pieces to suit whatever design you are making (this probably depends on the style of glass you are making). FYI the gift shop is really nice and is available even if you don't go into the museum. You can purchase works by glass artists who have been at the museum - so it's more than your average gift shop.

We stopped by here before a flight, please allow for 1 1/2 hours to explore this small museum. It could be longer if you want to watch the glass artists create a piece from beginning to end. We really enjoyed watching the artists create! Parking is in a lot below the museum, there is a pay station. We took the stairs up to the main museum and then walked the bridge above the museum that leads to downtown Tacoma. I found the glass artists create displayed beautiful.

I arrived at Cascadia Art Museum at 5:06 PM, expecting to explore the exhibits during regular hours…read moresince Apple Maps had listed them as open until 6:00 PM. Unfortunately, the museum had already closed to the public. Luckily, Sydney kindly invited me to stay for a private evening event that was just about to begin. The $20 admission ended up being incredibly worthwhile. Before the event I was able to walk around and see the gallery entirely while the staff set -up. The event featured a guest lecture by Dr. Simon Lhopiteau, a Paris-based art historian who recently opened a studio in Seattle. His talk centered on Henry Saÿen, a chemist-turned-painter whose work is rarely acknowledged in mainstream art history. We discussed Saÿen's invention of the self-regulating X-ray tube, his move to Paris during the rise of the avant-garde, and the influence of Henri Matisse on his artistic development. Dr. Lhopiteau also spoke about how both Henry Saÿen and Henri Matisse were among the early artists to shape the foundation of modern self-portraiture. Their work explored internal perception just as much as external form, and this introspective approach helped redefine how artists captured the self. He also shared how abstract and impressionist art in the early 20th century was not just rejected by the public, but often met with deep hostility and even violence. One of the highlights of the evening was Saÿen's 1903 painting titled Primitive Agricultures. We also explored the legendary artist gatherings at Le Dôme café in Paris and discussed the deeper connection between light, geometry, and perception in modern painting. The entire conversation felt alive--intellectually rich, spontaneous, and deeply human. It was one of the most engaging experiences I've had in a long time. Before leaving, I visited the museum gift shop and picked out a beautiful orange floral scarf for my mom. The shop was just as thoughtfully curated as the rest of the space. I also had the pleasure of speaking with Nancy, one of the museum ambassadors, who was incredibly kind and insightful. She told me about her travels through the Balkan countries and the museums and art collections she visited abroad. I shared my love for Renaissance art and armor from the Middle Ages and she encouraged me to visit France to experience those collections firsthand. I mentioned that my niece is French and currently studying there, so now I have even more reason to go. Before I left, I met Julie, the museum's education director, and learned that her academic thesis focused on Renaissance art and the representation of women. It was such an energizing conversation. She even gave me a list of local spots to eat, which meant a lot since I needed to grab dinner for my family after the event. I have attached the photos part of the current exhibit to this review to encourage people to see art in person because it is of amazing quality and deserves recognition. Had I arrived during regular hours, I probably would have paid $12 or gotten in free with my student ID, but I'm honestly glad I came when I did. Cascadia is not just a museum. It's a place of conversation, discovery, and connection. Whether you're visiting for the art or open to the unexpected, it's absolutely worth the experience.

He walked us through an exhibit called "Urban Scenes of Seattle: 1910-1960". Apparently in the "old days" and before the internet, Eastern U.S. arts are influenced primarily by European arts, while Western U.S. arts are influenced by both European arts and Asian arts. As a result, these mid-1900s regional arts has an intriguing amalgam of art styles from other parts of the world while serving as a historical data point of our area. I highly, highly recommend attending one of his "coffee with the curator" talks that give so much behind-the-scenes story of the artists, many of whom David personally knows. Other than the Urban Scenes exhibit, they are currently featuring a special exhibit of Christmas cards that are individually made by local artists that were sent to family and friends. No two are the same! The museum is modest size but packs a punch! It is definitely a local gem. Housed in an old Safeway building, it shares space with a bistro in the same building. Their museum store also has excellent pieces from artists and/or uniquely curated pieces. And they sell books written by David Martin. He'll autograph them if you want!
