Been here a couple of times but this time was a little disappointed. I'm not sure if they changed some of the style of or if it's because these items weren't ordered before I can't remember but we weren't not a fan of the asada burrito or pastor taco. The pastor taco looked like shredded chicken and the asada burrito had slices of tomatoes and pieces of lettuce so it just threw us all off.. I'd stick to the other tacos and maybe requesting no tomato or onion for the burrito. The rajas gorditas were good but super spicy and our fave dishes were the quesadilla and beans! read more

Tacos and burritos are sold individually. I had the asada burrito and my friend ordered a green chile burrito. Food was fresh and didn't take long to prepare. I personally don't believe it lived up to the hype I've heard about the food. I was eager to try the cake! I read a few mixed reviews so I was skeptical and I asked the lady taking our order if it was fresh. She told me they made it yesterday at the Mesa location and dropped it off. Saw this place on Triple D and everything looked so good! While visiting Phoenix over Labor Day weekend, we decided to give it a try! The hubs had c outlets of their barbacoa tacos and a quesadilla with carne asada! He said he could taste the cheese, I believe it was asadero and the good kind too! I had one barbacoa, one red chile and a Gordita filled with the ground beef picadillo. While these gorditas are flour and not masa like the ones I was raised on, they were still delicious. Tacos were tasty, though the cost of single tacos is getting up there- short of $3 Burritos - we got chicken and asada - not a fan of the white sauce that goes inside the burrito as it made the burrito too salty and tangy. I think I prefer the standard smoky meat flavor and basics so you can modulate sauce levels by adding in. Chicken was pretty dry. Gorditas were salty as well. read more

Five stars for the food- easy. The Al pastor is some of the best I've ever had and I love taking friends and family here. BUT the service quality depends on who is running the register. The last two times I've been there, the girl at the register was beyond rude. I mean it, beyond rude. When I've been waited on by other people, they will sub flour tortillas for the tacos since I'm allergic to corn- not this lady! (She's done this to me twice, all other times I've been given flour so they only don't have it when she works, weird). Another trip she asked the other person I was with: is that all you're going to order? I think customer service goes a long way. If I wasn't a devoted patron of this place, I probably wouldn't come back after having my last two interactions feel so tense and negative. As a woman I hate saying this, but she should smile more and learn some basic people skills- you're in a customer facing role. read more

I love going into Phoenix because I know I'm going to eat well. With so many good places to try for the first time or again, Tacos Chiwas is at the top of the again list. They're known for their Barbacoa for a reason. It is OMG GREAT. I've had most of their other meats which are all excellent. But it's the Barbacoa that I start craving the minute I think I'm going to be in their area. I passed on chips and salsa so I could enjoy an order of elote, which has to be the best I've had in a very long time. The food comes out so fast! If I was super hungry I would have sat there and ordered more, more more. But the two tacos, elote and beer I had were just right that day. read more

This place is awesome!! Great Latin music playing and great food-I had Barbacoa & Carnitas tacos. They were both delicious. I also ordered charro beans and those were amazing. Real pork fat in there for the flavor so look out, but they were outstanding and authentic! The service was good, but minimal. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. Absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. My wife, 2-year-old son, and myself all got severe food poisoning after eating here. Watching my baby suffer because of this restaurant's negligence was heartbreaking and infuriating. There is no excuse for serving contaminated food. This place clearly does not care about basic health and safety. I will never trust them again, and I strongly warn others to stay far away. Shame on you for putting families through this. read more

Tacos Chiwas is a staple in our family! Barbacoa tacos are our go-to, but my husband loves their gorditas too. I'm a margarita gal and they have lots of options from mango, spicy Cucumber, hibiscus and more! They aren't too sweet and you definitely get your money's worth. We have always had great service, the only thing that can be awkward is the positioning of where the cash register is at, even if there's only a few people in line, there's no where to stand. Definitely recommend for some high quality yet not break the bank tacos! read more

This is so unfortunate bc I was so excited for this. Many people have spoken very highly so this may have been an off day. The tacos were good, not great. The carne asada was far and behind the favorite for us between carnitas, Al pastor, asada, and shrimp. The tortillas are somewhat bland and quick to break. All the tacos had enough sauce and juice from the meat but paired well with options from the salsa bar which I appreciated having. The shrimp taco just wasn't good and the shrimp themselves were really rubbery. Margaritas were overly sweet and very meh. Service was great! Quick, friendly. Tacos Chiwas rocks!! Of course the tacos are their namesake so they are amazing, but the item that makes this place stand out for me are their Rajas Gorditas. I don't think there is anywhere in the Valley that you can get this, and I can't come here without ordering it. The gordita tortilla itself is beyond tasty, but the filling is out of this world. Roasted poblano peppers mixed with sautéed onions, cream and cheese set inside this lovely tortilla that has been smothered with refried beans. Give it a spritz of lime, and it is HEAVEN! You don't even need to add salsa to it (and believe me the salsas are amazing) because it's a perfect flavor bomb. And you really can't go wrong with any of their tacos. My favorite is a tie between the Al Pastor and the Carnitas. Both of these have so much flavor and melt in your mouth....I'm legit salivating as I write this down, lol. There's a reason why Tacos Chiwas has made a name for itself in town, so I highly recommend coming here and seeing what all the buzz is about. Your taste buds will thank you :) read more

I had pollo and barbacoa tacos and the charro beans. The barbacoa was very juicy and flavorful - prepare to have your napkins ready. The pollo was topped with pickled onions adding a nice punch. Three salsas were included, a spicy red chili, medium green, and creamy jalapeño, all were great. The charro beans were excellent with a smoky bacon flavor. I went in the evening and it was not crowded and my order was out in 5 minutes or less. They also serve alcohol in this expanded location, great for evening dining. read more

Saw the Netflix documentary and stopped for lunch to get tacos de asada, lengua, al pastor, bbcoa, and a horchata. Service was great, very quick & friendly! In & out in 15 mins total. The asada tastes boiled and totally lacks asada flavor (as noted by tons of reviews), and everything came out room temp. However, the other meats tasted much better and had good flavor! Tortillas were meh, a quick fry as most solid taco spots do would have gone a long way. Horchata was very pure tasting, I liked that a lot! I'm sorry to say, the salsa bar is tragic. Probably the saddest salsa bar I've ever witnessed. The salsa de aguacate is barely mid, the verde and roja are a flavorless acrid travesty, no radish, and with no limes at the bar you're limited to the pea-size pieces they serve with the tacos. My experience was not worth $19. I'm surprised this spot made the documentary, especially with what else Phoenix has to offer... read more

Anyway went there today and yes they were Off the Hook great. Who knew this small yet very clean taco shop about less than a 1/4 mile east of the Veterans Admin Hospital Would be that awesome. I had their Barbacoa tacos, and shrimp tacos. First of all the tortillas are Hand made daily. The meat was moist and succulent. The salsas catered to all ethnicities. Will I go back there again ABSOLUTELY! Their prices are very reasonable. So if your hungry for Authentic Chihuahua style tacos come on down. Get down like James Brown on this great food. read more

TLDR: Very solid tacos, and everything I got was tasty, but I won't be rushing back here/it isn't my holy grail spot. I try to check out taco spots all the time--probably hundreds in CA to AZ to in Mexico as well. Handmade tortillas are a nice touch and have a nice fluff to them. Salsas have some spice to them, though perhaps on the day that I went, they did seem a little liquidy. Asada was my favorite of what I tried. That was close to a 5/5. The al pastor, was my next favorite, followed by the shrimp tacos and the chiwa. Overall, the four tacos was enough to fill up my 200 pound frame, so I left satisfied.
