I happened to be in the area and was craving shrimp tacos and Yelp led me here. Holy cow the food is amazing! The gal working in the front was so sweet. I grabbed a few shrimp tacos, a chicken taco and elote. The tacos were filled with meat and fresh toppings. The shrimp was so flavorful on its own but in the taco I was blown away. The chicken taco was great as well but I preferred the shrimp. The elote was amazing and tasted like it was fresh grilled and cut off the cob. Very good. I'll definitely be stopping in again and grabbing a margarita as they have quite a few different flavors to go with my shrimp tacos and elote. So glad I found this spot!! read more

We were, unfortunately, very disappointed with this restaurant as a whole. We came from out of state and made sure to drive 30 minutes out of our way because of all the buzz surrounding this place. The menu is very small/limited, not a big deal. The prices were on the high side, but could have been worthwhile if the taste or portions matched the price. We spent over $60 for: 2 burritos (one asada one pastor) $11 ea 1 bean and cheese burrito 1 carnitas taco 2 chicken tacos $3.50 ea 1 chicken quesadilla $11 When I ordered I asked if they had a kids bean and cheese burrito, the employee said they didn't but it wasn't a very big burrito anyways, and it's the size of the other burritos (I saw she caught herself, but that was my first clue). When the food arrived it was in fact TINY! I spent $11 on a burrito that was all tortilla and little to no filling. I was able to wrap my hand around the burrito and have my fingers touch. It was more like the size of a cheap fast food burrito. The menu said it had beans in it, which were practically nonexistent. I describe it as they buttered the tortilla with beans. Beans are sooo cheap, a larger portion of beans could have made a big difference. Everyone agreed their food tasted pretty bland. My pastor burrito was the most flavorful of the meats we tried, but was not my preference. It tasted as if it was not roasted on a trompo, and instead was mostly meat simmered in a lot of sauce. Everyone in my family said their tortillas were cold. The tacos were very small street tacos and were very disappointing for $3.50. They showed no sign of having been heated on a griddle and were cold. The best tasting item was a simple quesadilla, which was also $11 and was disappointingly small for the price, and came with very little other than the meat and cheese (no sour cream, no pico, no tiny scoop of guacamole, just a tiny pile of lettuce and one tomato slice, not what you expect for $11). Here are the positives: The place was very well kept and clean, the bathrooms were clean as well. The employees were friendly and helpful The salsas were good. However, all were VERY spicy, which was fine for me, but my husband could not eat any of them, which is unfortunate because his food needed a little something extra. I liked the caramelized onions at the salsa bar. I threw a ton in my burrito, which improved the size and taste a little bit. I don't usually like leaving low star reviews if speaking with staff or a manger would have been a better course. However, I don't think feedback would have made a difference in our experience , as none of the things I described were simply mistakes or a bad day. I just wanted to share information about what a customer can expect when they come. Some people may enjoy the food more than we did. Take it as you will. read more

Came here a month or so ago because I wanted to try their carrot cake tres leches. I've had this placed bookmarked for awhile, and had to finally give it a try instead continuing to scroll through all their mouthwatering yelp photos. Thus place had a great vibe, fast service, and polite staff; however, as other shave noted prices are a little on the high side. The carrot cake tres leches ($9) was unfortunately very dense, almost as if it was an underbaked cake soaked into much milk and sat for a few days more than it should have. The layout of this restaurant is very odd and annoying. There was no thought behind anything basically when designing. As you walk in the door you order and sit but you end up blocking the entrance because that's where you order your food. It's a total disaster I must say but maybe it's just me, who knows. The bartender looked like she didn't want to be there, didn't smile and only acknowledged when I would say excuse me. I guess they grill their carne asada to order but it was under seasoned and had no flavor, didn't even have the texture of a carne asada. Not my favorite. The chicken taco was pretty good though and it was nice that they grilled it but couldn't really taste the char on it. Their barbacoa taco was very delicious but wouldn't come here again. This place is definitely my top taco spot in Phoenix. When walking in, it looks like a typical taco place but on top of the tacos, they got a full bar and a couple of tvs to watch sports on. The staff are very friendly and you get your food very quickly. When it comes to the tacos, they have a lot of different varieties of meat that all taste fresh and juicy. My favorite are their pastor, pollo, and taco chiwas tacos. And you get pretty solid portions too so you don't feel hungry. Found this place first because there's not many Mexican places that have vegetarian options but they have a great veggie breakfast burrito, rajas Gordita and of course bean and cheese. Saw this on Netflix taco chronicles & guy fieri came here a couple times for DDD. lots of people here on a weds night. You order at the counter and then seat yourself. The tacos are 3$ each which isn't terrible but they're kinda small. The tortillas also are not warm & kinda hard. I tried the elote cup which was sooooo good and creamy. The tacos I tried were chiwas, barbacoa, tripas& lengua. Tripas were sooooo crunchy like chicharron almost. The salsa is at the bar on the side & the light green creamy one was my fav. Ok This was our first time at Tacos Chiwas and I honestly didn't know their portion size! So when you order make sure you order a couple different things! Because the Gordita is in the smaller side but it's absolutely amazing and worth trying with tacos or another Gordita on the side! I got the Rajas Gordita and two Barbacoa tacos and let me tell you the spice on the Gordita was perfect, and the Barbaacoa tacos were mouth watering delicious. Like seriously those are a most try!! Finally made it down here during Spring Training. Got 5 tacos total. 2 carne asada, 2 al pastor and a carnitas. $3.00 a taco, so my total with tip came out to close to $20.00. A bit steep, honestly. A lot of places do the double tortillas on the street tacos, but not here...single tortilla.
