    a mexican food truck
    Richard K.

The Crows Landing area of Modesto is a taco and auto repair row that consists of tons of taquerias and auto repair locations. You've got mariscos, asada, pollo al carbon, tripas, pastor, honestly, any kind of taco can be found on this strip of Modesto. It's like taco truck, taco stand, taco restaurant, Mexican market, auto repair, taco restaurant, auto repair and gas station on one block and then it's repeat all over again. Now, Tacos El Pollo is actually not on Crows Landing Road, but it is located on Hatch Road about a 1/2 mile or so east of Crows Landing Road. If you pass the freeway overpass, then you've gone too far. I randomly discovered them because I made a wrong turn. You see, I was looking for El Pollo Feliz on Crows Landing to grab some Mexican-style BBQ chicken, but I made a wrong turn onto Hatch Road, saw the line at Tacos El Pollo and was like whoa, I need to eat here. BTW, Tacos El Pollo fittingly shares a lot with Modesto Muffler Shop! Tacos y autos. The irony is that I still haven't had the chicken here despite the restaurant being the Chicken Taco Place in Español. Maybe next time! Today was my second visit and I noticed that there wasn't even a Yelp page. So I made the page today. The crazy thing is that despite not having a Yelp page, the locals all knew about this little treasure of a taco joint. When a taqueria makes tacos with handmade tortillas and only charges $2-2.50 per taco, well that is what sets you apart from the zillion other taco restaurants that use factory-made tortillas. The tortillas that they use are nice and fluffy and really taste delicious. I'm a Coreano, but if I was Mexican, I could imagine my abuela making these tacos lol. I've tried Tacos El Pollo's carne asada, tripas, and al pastor tacos. All are fantastic. I really like the way they cook the tripas here extra crispy too. Again, one day I will try the pollo. LOL. So, if you happen to be in Modesto and have some cash (Tacos El Pollo is CASH ONLY) and are hungry and can't decide which one of the taquerias off Crows Landing you want to try, make the turn onto Hatch Road and try Tacos El Pollo, mi favorite taqueria en Modesto jajaja!

    Tripita super burrito

Honestly disappointed with this truck. Was expecting a bomb burrito the reviews claimed to be amazing. The customer service is great but the food was just okay. The tripita burrito was pretty burnt and barely had any cheese and cream for a super burrito. We also ordered 2 pastor tacos and previous reviews claimed they had homemade tortillas but ours did not. Presentation was there but still on our hunt for the best taco truck in Modesto.

Taco an burrito an the sides are delicious

One afternoon in Hayward, my family and I showed up right at 6 PM, exactly at closing time. We had just left a family party but purposely held our appetite because our favorite Puerto Rican food truck was finally back in town. My wife and I were married in Old San Juan, and Puerto Rico will always hold a special place in our hearts. We even travel back to the island with our kids whenever we can. When Chef Darren saw how disappointed we were that we had missed them, he didn't turn us away. Even though they were already closed, he fired the grill back up and blessed our family with an incredible meal. That level of hospitality, heart, and genuine Puerto Rican warmth is rare. The food was absolutely amazing as always, authentic flavors that instantly take us back to the island, but the kindness and service meant even more to us. We'll always support Boriqua Kitchen. Truly the best Puerto Rican food in the Bay Area, served by people who treat you like family.

It is located off a newly renovated street where new high rise development were put in to increase dwelling density and foot traffic. It is not quite there yet, but I can see where this is going. It is held in this square near a business park so there is plenty of parking. There is a grassy square where families like to lounge with picnic blankets and lawn chairs. There's usually a dj dishing out tunes, a beer and wine tent, and about 8-10 food trucks lined up in an organized fashion. It goes every Friday in the warm months so from May to October. If a holiday pops up on a Friday like 4th of July they will skip it. Starts at 5pm and goes to about 9pm. Bulk of the crowd goes from 6:30 - 8. I go to about 2-4 per year since 2017, with the exception of 2020 cuz y'all know why. You can see the food truck line up each week on their website or socials. So I like to scan that and if it looks promising then I'll text some friends/family if anyone wants to meet up after work on Friday. If the weather is nice, it is just a just a festive and social way to start a summer's weekend. Now even tho I like these events I don't always like food truck food. Sure it is trendy and you do get to sample and /or get stuff brought to you in one area. But I often just find many of the food to be just average at best at prices that rival sit down dining. So to me I like scoping these out occasionally but I don't think they are worth going to on a frequent basis. I also feel that there aren't enough places to sit and eat once you get your food from a truck. There is a small area where they put out portable picnic benches, but those fill up with just 20 people or so. Otherwise you have to sit on the lawn and come prepared with blanket or lawn chair, or find a concrete planter box to sit on, or go back to your car to eat. Another reason why food trucks events often leave me hanging. But bring a warm typical Bay Area summer's evening where it doesn't get dark til almost 9pm and you want to be amongst your community and commerce, this event will do you more than fine.

There was even some line dancing going on in the makeshift stage area at some point. Sound was not the greatest, the volume quite low even for a small event, but it was fine. There were about 8 food trucks to choose from, along with a few random vendor/service tents (like Bass Pro Shops). Decided on sliders and garlic fries from the Curveball food truck. The food was okay, good enough to satisfy my hunger (see my separate review on that). I snagged one of the few spots in the grass with shade on this hot evening, though they also have tables and seating here, partially shaded too. An actual restroom (not porta potties) on site, in the Fremont downtown event center building. Also, plenty of space available in the parking lot. This is a pretty low-key community event, free to attend and grab a bite to eat, and just hang out for an hour or two.

Great texture, topped with pork sung and crispy cabbage, plus katsu sauce and Japanese mayo. Savory, crunchy, and satisfying. Sumo Dog: Japanese curry beef chili with cheese and fresh scallions. Hearty, comforting, and perfect for that chilly evening. Fried Foods: We didn't try, any but they serve fries and potstickers too. The fries seemed to be a crowd favorite at Great Notion Brewery next door (which is partnered with Dojo Dog). Definitely getting them next time. Rebecca told me she enjoys experimenting with new dishes, and the creativity shows. Looking forward to trying more! ---- Drinks ---- We didn't but drinks as we were enjoying beer at Great Notion, but Dojo Dog also offer drinks like milk tea. ---- Bonus ---- As I mentioned, they partner with Great Notion, one of our FAVORITE bars in the Bay with the best smoothie beers and stouts. It never feels like a production, just a good place to land. We have eaten our way through a decent chunk of the trucks at this point, and that is half the fun. One day it is something messy and indulgent, the next it is lighter, but it always hits. Grabbing a drink, finding a spot at the picnic tables, and slowly settling in as the place fills up is kind of the rhythm. It is social without being overwhelming, lively without being chaotic. What keeps us coming back is how consistent it feels in the best way. It is easy, flexible, and always a good time whether you stay for an hour or lose an entire afternoon there. This also means a good variety for folks with different dietary needs, because they are mostly picking their own food. I have always enjoyed my time here, whether it's on company dime or if I'm just hanging out with friends. I do wish that there are more heaters around for the colder days but that's just life in the bay! It can be kind of cold and foggy all seasons here, so if you have a solid group of folks I'd recommend reserving a spot with a fire pit. One more note: parking can be tough. You either have to circle around for street parking, or rideshare here.
