    Fajitas for two
    Kyle B.

Food was really good, the plate for two was alright. The ambiance seating outside was really really nice. But the service was awful. The table next to us had a server who checked on them every few minutes. We got two different servers, one who took our drinks and the other who said she's taking over and then we didn't see her until we got the check. They charge more for card over cash. But based on the service alone, I wouldn't return. It wasn't that they couldn't do better, but that they didn't want to.

Cool patio style dining area and beautifully decorated interior. Have inky had to go but need to come for dine in service. Owner is friendly and great sense of humor. We had menudo to go and it was nicely flavored and the hand made tortillas were awesome.

My home is right cross the street for many years and today was the first time coming here. Great food nice and season. I had a mixed fajita daughter has kid quesadilla and dad menudo. All flavor was good. Service was great too. They were friendly

Have been wanting to try this place since I moved to Modesto. Service is amazing!! All the ladies were super sweet to my mom and I. We came in for a few drinks and appetizers. The drinks were so good! On the pricier side but worth it. As we were talking to our server, she mentioned they sometimes have music outside and vendors, we look forward to coming back to enjoy. definitely a place to keep coming back!

Grilled chicken breast plate (no oil), side of whole beans and plenty of fresh pico de gallo!

Great food and great service. We had a party of 10 and our food came out quick and our waitress was very attentive! I got the grilled chicken breast plate, but asked that they cook the chicken without any oil andI just wanted a side of pinto beans and pico de gallo. The chicken was pounded out really thin, so it wasn't all that moist and was a little tough and to eat, but it was still flavorful and it didn't stop me from eating all of the chicken. Super cute inside and the staff is so friendly and accommodating to different requests some of us had for our meals. Definitely recommend!

Karina our waitress was awesome, she even let us know that she has some great taqueros in her family. They have establishments in Ceres and Riverbank. We hope to be able to check them out one day. I was recommended this restaurant, described as a (homey feel). It really was I want to eat those flautas everyday. I can't believe it took me this long to come in and try this delicious food! I had been wanting (10 years) now to eat delicious Mexican food just the way I remember it. Finally I found the place, and can't wait to bring family and friends here! Btw the house margarita was absolutely devine.

We were looking for a spot with outdoor dining and found this place. The space is really cute, food is delicious and the staff are very friendly and attentive. Love the salsa and beans that are complimentary.

Hands down the best nachos my girlfriend and I have ever ate!! Make sure to add shrimp to your asada nachos to surf n turf! Lol I'd give them 10 stars if I could

I had the shrimp tacos and my husband had the Taco trucks tacos. Both were delicious. I would have to say these shrimp tacos are the best I've had. Saucy and enough taste but not over powering. Definitely recommend trying. The taco were great too. Not dry and decent good amount of meat and onions on them. Service was great. Waitress checked on us through the meal and promptly refilled our drinks appropriately. Loved the decor to the restaurant. Great vibe and clean restaurant. The bathrooms were kept clean as well. Love this place.

Street tacos (carne asada con todo) y piña margarita
    Amanda L.

Very cute small space. Hostess and waitress were friendly. Street tacos were flavorful, thin/crunchy tortillas which were prefect for the tacos; also ordered elote as a starter which was good as well. Plus no complaints on the piña margarita 3.5/5

    Cucumber and lime aqua fresca!

My Lady and I were in the mood for some healthy taco options and Taqueria El Maguey was high up on Yelp's list. Maaaaan did they nail it. We sat outside as it was unusually pleasant. Our server was great! I don't remember her name though. We went with the shrimp tacos and they were crazy good! We tried the cucumber and lime agua fresca and it was also crazy good! We are totally coming back. Nice job!

    Pollo Maguey

Chips and Salsa and Bean Dip - Chips were kind of stale Salsa was a bit bland but beans were good Beautiful patio area in front with plants, a water feature and interesting decor. Interior was modern Mexican with lots of natural woods. We were seated immediately and met our server promptly. Combo Plate (crunch al pastor taco, carnitas enchilada with green sauce, chile relleno) - Crunchy Al Pastor Taco - 6 - taco shell and toppings were amazing but the Al pastor was bland. Highly recommend with a different meat. Carnitas enchiladas with green sauce - 6 - carnitas was bland but the green sauce was pretty good. I think it could use more heat. Chile Relleno - 9 - was very good, especially the red sauce with chunks of tomato. Would like it to be more crispy where the sauce isn't on it. Pollo alla Crema - 7 - A bit too creamy and cheesy for my taste Would like more chipotle flavor Pollo Maguey - 10 - Perfectly season meat cooked to perfection. Home made tortillas was an excellent addition. Tapatia (chicken) - 8 - Beautiful dish with lots of toppings in a lower calorie construct. Seems exactly like a tostada to me. I'd come back to try some drinks, eat some crunchy tacos and enjoy the pollo Maguey on the patio on a summer evening. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Donoby's - A Soft Spot in the Night…read more I walked into Donoby's tonight while waiting for the crowd across the street at Toriis to thin out, and honestly... I'm glad I did. This bar has an underrated, easygoing pulse that a lot of places try for but can't quite land. No shouting, no chaos, just gentle conversation, light laughter, and that familiar hum of people enjoying being out without needing to prove anything. The bartender, Amy, we actually sang "Broken" by Seether & Amy Lee together at karaoke here a couple weeks ago, pours with care. You can feel when someone takes pride in the small things, a clean pour, a quick smile, a read on the room. She has that. The crowd here tonight is relaxed. Mixed ages, no pressure, no edge. Just people unwinding from the week. It is a place where you can sit with a beer, breathe for a minute, and not feel like the world is tugging at you. Plenty of seating, the lighting is warm, the décor is classic without being stale, pool tables in good shape, and a vibe that makes you want to stay for just one more....because it is comfortable. That is rare. Donoby's isn't loud about who it is. It doesn't need to be. It just is....and that's what keeps a place alive. I'll be back.

I have left wonderful reviews in the past for this place but I have to share my experience…read morerecently. My boyfriend and I have been to Standard Pub several times during the day, and every visit has been fantastic. We've enjoyed the food, drinks, and even had the pleasure of speaking with the owner on multiple occasions. The service was always welcoming, and the food was consistently phenomenal. Because of those great experiences, we decided to bring some friends on a Saturday night. We arrived around 7:30 PM, and the atmosphere looked promising. There appeared to be a DJ setting up, and the crowd seemed excited for a night of music, food, and drinks. Unfortunately, our experience that evening was completely different from what we had come to expect. We ordered food and drinks, and while our server wasn't outright rude, he seemed uninterested in providing the level of service we had previously received. As the night went on, things became increasingly odd. Shortly after ordering another round of drinks, while our drinks were still full and we had just received them, the server approached our table and asked if we were finished. My boyfriend jokingly responded, "No, let me talk to your manager," and laughed, assuming the server was joking as well. The server responded, "Yeah, it's my brother," but with an attitude that left everyone at our table looking at each other wondering what had just happened. He then informed us that we needed to put a credit card on file. At that point, we had already been there for over an hour, and it seemed strange that this requirement was only being brought up then. We also noticed that no other tables around us were being asked for a card. The most disappointing part came when we received the bill. There was an additional $60 service charge added--$35 on my friends' bill and $25 on ours. Confused, we asked for an explanation. The explanations we received kept changing. First, we were told it was because my boyfriend was sitting with another group, which was completely false. Then we were told it was because the bill exceeded $100. After that, we were told it was because there were more than six people in our party, despite there only being four of us. The inconsistent explanations were frustrating and made it feel as though the staff were simply making up reasons to justify the charge. Our issue wasn't necessarily with a service fee itself--it was the lack of disclosure and the conflicting stories we were given when we asked about it. To make matters worse, the receipt also included a separate line for an additional tip. After discussing it with them and explaining that additional charges should be clearly communicated to customers, the service charge was ultimately removed. This review is not a reflection of the food, which remains excellent, nor of our previous experiences at Standard Pub. It is solely based on the service and handling of the situation during our Saturday night visit. We left feeling disappointed and confused, especially because this establishment had earned our trust through many positive visits in the past. I sincerely hope this was an isolated incident and that management addresses these issues so other customers don't have a similar experience

This worked fine for us. We had our menus and drinks in a reasonable time, and had a relaxing time throughout. We both had the pulled pork sandwich along with the ice tea. I also had the cup of chili - nicely spiced). I enjoyed my sandwich (skipping the bun, as I am trying to limit carbs). My friend, whom I realized often fusses about the meals we share, was more critical. His comments were "Wrong bun, hamburger bun shoulda been an onion bun" and "How long does it take to make a sandwich?" (The wait time was totally reasonable to me.) He didn't like the potato salad (but ate it all with little time spared). He liked the meat in the sandwich, giving it a 5 out of 5. He liked the service less (I felt it was on point and just fine.) Unfortunately, my dining experience wasn't as positive. I waited almost an hour and a half for my meal, and by the time it arrived, everyone else in my party had nearly finished eating. Since it took so long, I ended up taking the food home. I did try it later, but I wasn't very impressed. That may have been because the food was cold by the time I ate it, as it sat for quite a while before it was brought to me. While I truly appreciated the manager's efforts and customer service, the long wait time and overall food experience left me disappointed.

Inside room is ok, a bit cold feeling with concrete counters, floors, etc. There were several groups at the bar, 3-4 guys on one end, 2 guys at the other, so I sat in the middle. The first red flag was the female bartender, who was dressed in sweats and a ball cap, like she had just rolled out of bed. Very unprofessional, even for a beer/pub. She seemed disinterested in serving me and was more concerned about talking with the 4 guys. Then another guy & girl joined that group. They all knew one another, obviously regulars. The beer list was decent and well-balanced. 4 IPAs, a couple of Pils/Lager and Stout/Porters, Hazy IPAs, Cider/Selzer, and 4 grocery store beers: Coors Light, Modelo, Bud Light, and ? IPAs were from Henhouse, Drakes, Dust Bowl, and ? Large food menu for such a small place. From the bar, you can easily watch the cook on the flattop. After reading the list of sandwiches, I figured the turkey/ham/etc. was the Sysco-type, inexpensive kind, so I opted for a cheeseburger. Burger & fries arrived on a metal sheet pan. The burger looked good, and the fries looked a bit undercooked (not golden brown). Bun was toasted on the flattop and had a bit of mayo, no mustard, ketchup, etc. Fries came with a small 1oz thimble of ranch. As I suspected, the fries were undercooked. I cut the burger in half, and the center was undercooked. Then I noticed the burger patty was actually two thin patties pressed together. WTF? First bite was a warning- the meat had no seasoning and tasted like cardboard. Thankfully, I got a second beer and washed down the burger. Only ate half of the burger. I'm guessing they sell a lot of booze, because there is no way people are going for the food. I wouldn't be surprised if this place is closed by the end of 2026.

I would give it 5 stars for the friendly service! But I had to knock off 2 stars because what I ordered was not very good. I ordered the Thai tacos and they offered a low-carb version on a bed of lettuce instead of tortillas. The presentation was nice and I know they really tried, but it was pretty bad. The sauce tasted more like ketchup and did not taste like a Thai sauce at all. It was supposed to have chopped peanuts in it but it hardly had any. The chopped chicken pieces were drowned out by the ketchup tasting sauce. I thought there would be more avocado on it but there was only a tiny piece on each taco and they chose a bad avocado because the avocado was turning brown with stringy fiber in it. I couldn't eat it after a few bites. On the other hand hubby had fish and chips which he liked. The french fries were good. So my dish was a bomb while hubby's was decent and predictable. I would return if I'm in the area because the service is so friendly and nice, but I would not order that again. I would try something more mainstream that's hard to botch up like maybe a hamburger or a sandwich.
