First off, we found out about this restaurant through social media. We knew eventually we'd want to try it. Luckily, we were by the mall and made the VERY short 10-ish minute drive. Worth it! Walked into a very quiet, but colorful restaurant with only one other patron inside. The employees were so nice. We were told to pick anywhere, we were brought menus and instantly asked if we'd like anything to drink or if we wanted to look at the menu first... We asked for suggestions and the waitress offered the types of drinks they have. She brought us chips and salsa. The chips were homemade with a perfect crunch. The salsa was fresh, chunky and not spicy. The pepino cone limo aqua Fresca was the best aqua Fresca I've EVER had. Not too sweet at all and was SO REFRESHING. We also ordered an horchata and I was told that was just as good. The food... Where to start. We ordered an empanada and some quedabirria tacos. The empanada was HUGE, deliciously filling with fresh ingredients. It had great flavor. The quesabirria tacos were probably the best we've had. You order the amount you want. They are 5.99 each and oh so delicious. The meat tasted SO FRESH and flavorful. The creamy jalapeño salsa had a NICE kick to it. All meals come with radish and pickled onions as garnish, but eating them with the meal made it even more refreshing and delicious. They need more than one location, but until then we will be back! Ordered a carne asada burrito with no rice. Carne asada overall had pretty good flavor and texture to it. Smaller pieces, but very few were chewy so it was cut well. Avocado and sour cream made for a creamy balance to the carne asada and beans. Size wise was solid and for the price of $17 not bad at all. Overall I'd definitely come back 7.6/10 read more

Frida Kahlo inspired taqueria next to the laundromat at Rumble and Prescott. There's a dozen wood tables and chairs about the place seating 50 people in any configuration you'd like. Most people eat here but you can also order to go at the counter. We were greeted immediately on a Saturday evening and able to place our order to go quickly. Although the enchiladas are highly rated, we chose to try the Chile rellenos and Empanada. We noticed while waiting for our food that that have homemade flan....I went ahead and ordered it because I can't pass up a homemade flan. Here's what we thought of the food. Chile Relleno - 7 Lacked crispness for the most part and wasn't a memorable Chile, cheese or sauce flavor Empanada - 10 This was a unique and delicious version of an empanada. This is the first time we ate here, after we found this place in yelp, when we had an appointment near here. I ordered the Al pastor taco. The taco was temperature hot but too oily . It had no taste. Because it was too hot and oily, tortilla broke open. The meat was oily and the meat was tough and burnt and it didn't have that much of a flavor like most restaurant spicy and flavorful. Highly recommend Frida's to those seeking authentic Mexican cuisine. Everything was a 10/10 for me. From the salsa and chips, to the mulita, nothing was a miss in regards to flavor and presentation. I tried the two aguas frescas: pepino limon and arroz, and both were perfectly made! They were fresh and did not taste artificial. The chavela, is a prepared beer of your choice with salt and lime, and can sometimes be a miss, but not at Frida's! If you enjoy beer, try this one! Food 10/10: Asada Mulita-the asada was savory with minimal fat and juicy. Honestly it did not need anything added, because it was already perfect. The salsas are not super spicy but provide good heat without extreme burn. Asada fries- they use an orange sauce that I loved. Steak fries, refried beans, meat, cheese and toppings all balanced portions. Shrimp Botana- a must try! The sauce on these was tangy and is not spicy but is so good that I was dipping the steak fries in it! The interior is beautifully designed with Frida decor. The art and decor transports you to Mexico with the colors and decorative pieces. The staff are efficient and welcoming. It was a little busy yet the wait was minimal from when we ordered to receiving our food. The restaurant is tucked away in a small shopping strip but there is parking available. read more

So I was excited 2 try the wet burritos based on reviews. I ordered a chile verde super burrito wet with green sauce. Was pretty expensive. Burrito came out to $16.99 without tax. When I got burrito it looked good but deflated. Like it was not stuffed at all so that was disappointing. If you look through my reviews you will see I'm a burrito connoisseur. Mexican in general. Flavor was good but burrito unfortunately did not have much insides. Sausages were all pretty good. Had some heat to them . I feel that the burrito was a bit overpriced. read more

This restaurant deserves a lot more love! The menu isn't too large, but they have perfected the things that are on the menu. The quesabirria had so much meat and cheese. The pickled onions added that acidity that was needed to balance the meat. The burrito mojado was one of the best that I've ever tried. It was huge! The rice was perfect, the beans were good, and the pastor was so flavorful. I enjoyed the red sauce more than the green one because it is spicier. Absolutely the best homemade Mexican food I've ever had. My family lived in the Bay Area all our lives, recently moved to Modesto. We've tried many different Mexican restaurants in the last two years after moving here. We've gone to Hughson, Waterford, Oakdale and Modesto, however, Frida's is the best. The staff is friendly and courteous, checking in with us without having to get their attention. Thank you! Large portions, always taking home the rest. A good selection on the menu makes it easier to decide what to have, also they offer all our favorites. On our first visit I had the chili relleno dinner plate, ( the absolute best I've ever had), my husband had the enchilada plate (2 chicken and 2 chili verde) you can choose the meat. Today we went again, this time I had the chili verde super burrito (omg excellent ) my husband had the chicken taco's, again took 1/2 home for later. The chips are house made as well as the salsa, the salsa is perfect and delicious. We met the owner Angel and told him about trying other places and letting him know we thought his is the best. Customer service is on point! Food was piping hot and delicious. The chile Colorado took me back to Mexico. The meat was tender and juicy, the sauce was robust and flavorful, and the beans were to die for! Highly recommend it. We mainly came for the quesabirria, and weren't disappointed. It really hit the spot. The salsa, pickled onions and consome all just came together beautifully, and the salsa had some heat. We also tried the asada fries. They were decent, but I'd definitely just stick to the quesabirria next time. The fries weren't really crispy, there wasn't much meat, and they had refried beans. Refried beans + fries is just a very dry bite. They use shredded cheese, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't help with the dryness. If you swapped out the refried beans for whole beans, and (just my taste) used nacho cheese instead of "real" cheese and added the salsa that comes with the quesabirria it would be much better. Oh, and the complimentary chips and salsa were great! Everyone working here is very friendly and welcoming, the decor is inviting and great music! read more

I had a very disappointing experience with the customer service here. I placed a DoorDash order and added a polite note reminding them about a buy-one-get-one drink promotion they have run in the past. The only reason I mentioned it is because on previous orders when the promotion appeared on the receipt, the free drink was not included. Shortly after ordering, an employee called me to explain that a $10 reward promotion had been applied instead of the BOGO drink. I told him that was completely fine and that the note was only there because of past experiences where the promotion wasn't honored. Instead of simply clarifying the situation, the employee became loud and rude on the phone. The conversation felt unnecessarily hostile, and he ultimately canceled my order. It's unfortunate because the food here is actually very good, but customer service matters. Based on this experience, I won't be returning and would recommend others choose a place that treats customers with more respect. read more

As a first-generation Mexican who grew up eating authentic Mexican food my whole life, I can honestly say this is hands down some of the best I've ever had. I ordered the chilaquiles divorciados, quesa birria, and a café de olla -- every bite was delicious and tasted homemade. I was passing through Modesto and stopped by for a bite at Frida's. This was my first time here. I ordered queso birria tacos, a regular beef taco, horchata, and flan. The birria portioning was perfect, great balance of cheese & meat. The consome was to die for. Perfect in every way possible. Flavorful, heat, and warmth. The beef taco was juicy and incredibly flavorful! You can tell the proteins they are using are high quality. The horchata was not overly sweet which i really appreciated. The flan was decadent and creamy! Inside was incredibly clean and nicely decorated with the Frida theme! Staff was kind and service was very pleasant! I can't believe this place has been hiding under my nose for 3 years. I was looking for a new Mexican restaurant that I haven't been to yet, and this one stood out from all the rest. What caught my attention was the quesabirria pizza. I dont know where I have been, maybe under a rock, but birria is new to me, let alone a quesabirria pizza. The quesabirria pizza gets a 10 out of 10. I couldn't improve it anymore other than maybe adding sour cream to put on it. But that's all I would add. It's amazing. I must try. The birria taco was also flawless. Salsa was on point, and Nachos had so many toppings that we had to use a spoon or fork at times. Which incase you didn't know is a good thing. The horchata was good but not great. That's just my preference. The place is super clean and is now going to be a regular spot to visit. The menu is not super big. That means they can concentrate on making everything good, which they did. They make the food to order, so it takes a little longer to come out, but it's fresh, and you can taste it. It is such a very popular restaurant we had to park down the street. The menu options are minimal but that's ok they have mastered their items and they were gracious to make a substitution. I had a perfectly toasted Asada Torta and enjoyed every bite. My husband ordered Chilaquiles that were also cooked wonderfully. The beans were light and amazing We will definitely return soon on another Modesto visit. We were lucky enough to get a parking space almost in front of the restaurant. We walked in and were greeted immediately by being asked if we wanted to eat in or order to go. When we said eat in, we were given our choice of tables. It looked like most of their tables are high tops and of the two low tops, one was already occupied. We took the other one. The server dropped off menus as well as chips and salsa. He then offered to take our drink orders while we decided what food to order. After he dropped off our drinks, he came back with his ordering tablet. She got a Carne Asada Super Burrito - 4 - Overall, she liked the size, the meat was tender, and that there was avocado. The one downside was she felt the burrito was a bit bland. Chile Verde Plate - 4 - Very good. I'm a freak. I like a little bit more fat on my pork. Loved the beans. Rice was so-so, but like I said, I'm a freak.
