We noticed a new restaurant pop up in our area so of course we had to stop by to check it out. Tacos El Rey is located in a small shopping center with plenty of parking available. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant- it's very authentic. You will be greeted with Mexican music and complimentary chips and salsa. You must try the aguas frescas! We ordered horchata (cinnamon-rice) and jamaica (hibiscus) agua fresca. They were both very refreshing. The menu is huge with lots of options and great prices. We ordered the tricolor carne asada burrito ($10), sopes ($6), and churros and ice cream ($5). Our server was quick and attentive- she even offered to refill our chips basket. It's safe to say Tacos El Rey has earned a spot in our regular dining circuit.

The music was a vibe and the outside patio looks so darling. The service was quick and friendly. Even though my husband always wants spicier, the home made salsas were so flavorful. Not crowded at all, though a few persons arrived after us. Love all the natural light. Karla seated us and brought our drink orders - soda and tea ($4.15 ea) - promptly, and some tasty salsa and chips. We asked for a minute to review the menu since it was our first visit. From here it just missed the mark. Server was on the phone to the side of the bar so we waited, and waited, for our order to be taken. Chips and salsa ran dry, as did my husband's soda. We ordered the Special Texas Plate ($16.63) - beef burrito, enchilada and chalupa - and a side Shredded Chicken Enchilada ($5.19). Food came out pretty quickly, and we were offered more chips, which we declined. I wish I had taken a picture. The burrito and enchiladas were swimming in red sauce. It really took away from the taste of the food. The chalupa was very tasty, with the guac topping. Quantities were perfect for the 2 of us to share. Check out went quickly, once we got her attention. While location is great for us, and I love the interior, the pricing is WAY off for the quality/quantity of the food, and service is lacking. Check that box.

This little taco stand in Harvey is real deal divey, blink-and-you'll-miss-it... and honestly,…read morethat's usually where the good food be at. I pass this place all the time but never stopped. Today I wanted something different and inexpensive. I checked Yelp, saw it was right there, and had to talk myself into it because I eat tacos ALL the time... like I'm lowkey taco'd out. But something about authentic tacos on corn from a lil shack like this? They hit different. So I went with my move. I looked at the menu and saw tongue tacos... and that sold me Mind you, I NEVER had tongue before. But I said I wanted something different, so let's stand on that. Pulled up around lunch--about 3 people waiting. There's an option to call ahead too. I waited a few minutes, but they acknowledged me quick, and you could tell they were working, so I wasn't tripping. Ordered 3 tacos: tongue (of course), shredded beef, and pork. Threw in pupusas because why not--it's been years. And a melon juice. Total was about $29, got my number, waited maybe 8-10 minutes. When they handed me the bag... it had a little weight on it I already knew. I ate in my car since there's no real inside seating, and started with the pork taco. Now listen... pork tacos can be DRY. I don't really order them for that reason. But THIS one?? Juicyyyyy. Like juices-on-my-shirt type juicy (I'm too grown for that ). Flavor was there, shredded perfect--they changed my whole outlook on pork tacos. Then I tasted the other two because they looked similar. First one ended up being the tongue... and babyyyy. Tender. Soft. It reminded me of goat--real rich and flavorful. I can't even believe I tried it, let alone LIKED it. I'm officially sold. The beef was good too, but after that tongue taco? It was hard to compete, I'm not even gonna lie. That red salsa? Flavorful with a kick. I love spice... but spice don't always love me back Still worth it. The melon juice started off a little grainy (you can tell it's real fruit), but once it settled, it smoothed out. Super refreshing. Now them pupusas... I did NOT expect two. That's why the bag felt like that Stuffed with meat and cheese, crispy on the outside, soft inside. Came with the pickled cabbage/carrot mix and that tomato-based sauce--everything worked together. Not spicy, just balanced. Only thing I'd note--no prices listed, but for everything I got (plus that big 32oz drink), it was honestly worth it.

The first thing I always look at is the health score of any place I eat at.I worked in food service for over 30 years I never got below a 98 on the health score. I have very high standards. There are no excuses. The second thing I look at is reviews, The good the bad and the ugly, It gives me an insight into the place. The third standard is mom and pop places are the best, they have put their lives on the line to make a business to sustain themselves and their family, Now for my street creds, I lived in Texas all over the state for over 30 years, I know good Mexican food, I know good Tex Mex and I know the difference. With all of that being said. Westbank WTF is wrong with yall? We came to this place this evening at 6;30 pm, it was empty on a Thursday evening. When by any standards it should have had a line out the door, with standing room only. Our waitress a sweet young lady named Angie greeted us promptly, with friendliness and professionalism for one so young in age. She gave us the table set up silverware and a abundance of napkins, full dinner menus were provided, Let me tell you my delight when we ordered a couple of Modelo's and they were served in ice cold bottles and frosted mugs. You do not find that often on the westbank, The tortilla chips and salsa was brought, The chips were light and crisp, but firm enough to hold the salsa and the guacamole dip I ordered to go with them. The wait in between the ordering of our food and the arrival was timely, It gave me an opportunity to take a quick look around and snap some pictures. Yes I took a picture of the restroom. Ladies how many times have you turned away from the ladies room because it was on par with a latrine at the jazz fest? Not this place it was sparkling, You can tell alot about a place when checking out the restroom. If they keep the bathrooms clean you can bet the same care and dedication is taken with the kitchen area and food prep surfaces. With in minutes of taking the pictures and the restroom visit our food arrived. He ordered the fajita street tacos, I ordered the fajita plate. As per the usual it came on a plate, but this plate was still cooking when it came to our table. The aroma was divine, it was served with a side of rice and black beans. Not let me be honest, I DO NOT LIKE BEANS. Childhood trauma. But to be able to give a fair review, I made myself try them and to do it with an open mind. They were awesome, the flavoring, the texture, the consistency. all blended so well together that I ate them with relish. It amazed the old hippy so much that he had to try them, because he does know my aversion to them. And he quite agreed they were the best he had ever had., Our waitress was readily available asking us if we had everything we needed, And as we both dug into our respective dinners. We were amazed. Having spent the last decade in this area of Cajun and Creole delicacies and seasoning. It was so pleasant and enjoyable to taste the flavor and the blending of the ingredients, And not have it hidden by an over abundance of the seasonings of cajun and creole cooks. Spices are designed to enhance the flavor of the food, not to mask the flavor. The heat of the cuisine was understated but had a build up of flavor and heat. It was not overbearing, it was perfection. Delivered with a chef who knew what he was doing in the kitchen. Not just dumping to cover. But to beguile and build up the anticipation of the next bite. Now if you haven't ever noticed a true professional in the kitchen will never put salt and pepper on the table being served, as it is an insult to the chef stating that they had gotten it wrong. There was absolutely nothing wrong or missing from out dinner. From the first bite, to our pushing our plates away in full and complete satisfaction. We did have to make room for a piece of Flan and it was like none we had ever had, Angie our waitress advised us that her father is the chef and everything is handmade by him in the kitchen. That was the secret, it was fresh not frozen, home made not by some corporate entity and packaged and shelved for shipment. I said it before Westbank WTF is wrong with yall, you love your food, you love supporting local businesses. This gem of a small restaurant deserves your patronage. Leave the cajun seasoning, Step away from the roots and go see what quality, homemade, dedication in the kitchen is really all about. This was our first visit but I can guarantee you it won't be the last. From start to finish the dinner came in under 60 dollars, the portions were more then ample. and the flavor was out of this world. I have not had Mexican food of this quality since I left Texas. And I am so happy this is local to me.

We were sat at a table that was very wobbly - I kept worrying my water cup was going to spill. Server brought menus. I was told they did not have lengua or tripas today. So I ordered the barbacoa tacos. My husband ordered the birria burrito and we got loaded fries with al pastor. Server brought out his beer, but didn't bring a bottle opener. Then she brought out chips and salsa bottles, but no dish to put the salsa in. The wine opener and menus stayed on the table the whole time until I handed them back to her when the food arrived. She also did not bring napkins so we grabbed the paper towel roll off of the bar counter top. She did tell us at the end while we were cashing out that she is new. The food itself was really good! I thought the tacos were excellent- the barbacoa was juicy and seasoned well - perfect little street tacos! My husband enjoyed his burrito- it was solid. I ate the other half for dinner later. The loaded fries were ok. The al pastor meat was the best part. We were already full so ate about half the fries. Overall not a horrible experience because the food was very good. Casual dive atmosphere - 2 tvs were on but were. It working and the screen was all pixelated.

Large waiting area to stand and wait near the hostess station. Also has a bar area which looks like first come, first serve. We ordered drinks while we waited and hung out in the lobby area. Finally we were sat. Complimentary chips and salsa were brought right away. We Ordered drinks and the chorizo queso, which came fairly quickly. The queso is HOT, bubbling in a volcanic rock molcajete. Sooo good. Strongly suggest this item! I ordered the Tacos Tijuana (lengua). My husband ordered grilled fish tacos and an ala carte cheese quesadilla. The food was great. Lengua was a little dry- I know it's lean but it was not as juicy and gamey as I like. No other complaints except the guacamole that came with my tacos tasted artificial or "off". It also stayed very green throughout the meal which tells me there is either a lot of lemon or it is premade with something to make it not oxidate like fresh avocados. It was just not great guacamole. The frijoles charro on the other hand were excellent! Lots of flavor, pork, cooked nicely and seasoned well. I could eat that by itself. I will for sure be back.
