This was pretty mid at best. I'm sorry to all of those who love this place. Maybe is the location? I went to the one they have in Laurel Canyon by the Wells Fargo and Old 3$ theater. It's a satellite location, I guess. My first clue that it was not good should have been when I arrived and there was no line or any wait at all. I was the only one, and the food looked like it was sitting there a while, especially the sour cream and guac. This was on a Saturday night, btw, after 10pm. Huge red flag But here I was trying them out. Got Al Pastor tacos and some queso tacos. All tasted too salty and stale and needed a lot of sauce and sour cream to fix. Sour cream in itself tasted bad, so I needed a lot of soda to fix that taste. Service was fast, but then again, it was empty. Service is quick, they hand you the burrito to load up on toppings and salsa and they will wrap it for you. Keep an eye on their Instagram for their weekly specials including the burritos, fries etc. Ambiance is on the sidewalk, some party chair and table seating under ez ups for 'dine in'. I hope you all see this. The Tacos El Venado stand you want has a black sign. Don't and I repeat, don't, go to the yellow one. So less than a mile away, there's another taco stand that is "Tacos El Venado" right off the freeway. It's near an encampment. Same menu but yellow and red. We went to both. The quality at the yellow/red is far less. It taste ok. Now for the real spot. Immediately tasted the difference. Meat was fresh off the grill. Everything was fresh. The other spot was not bad but not the place we've known to love. Had a few less tacos here because I went to the other. I went to the LA location too and it's on par. Definitely this is what drew me here - the fact that they open on the later side. The people were cool and very helpful. The vibe here is like the spot that everybody goes to after going to the bars in the area. At least that's how it felt when I went because it was on the later side. They sometimes mess up the numbers but then they get the hang of it. The wait time is barely 10 minutes. I ordered the Torta Cubano and Carne Asada fries. WOW. Delicious. Had a few al pastor tacos, an asada taco, a pollo taco, a carnitas taco, and a cabeza taco. Don't think any of the meats were the best I've ever had, but I enjoyed all of them. Only one that I would probably not get again is carnitas because it was a bit dry for me, but then again I've never really been the biggest carnitas fan. Been here many times but I recently visited and had a mixed experience. I ordered a good-to-go burrito, but the oil was so much that it was dripping out of the burrito. It wasn't very appetizing and not very tasty. I also noticed that even my pastor fries had a lot of oil. Prices have gone up, but it's the same everywhere else. The portions are nice and big, and you definitely get your money's worth. I just hope they can be more mindful of the amount of oil they use in their food.
