Really enjoyed my second visit here for lunch on a weekday. It's easy to get to from the Navy base and parking is not an issue with plenty of street parking available. Came here yesterday for tacos, handmade tortillas were on the thick side, tripas were very chewy, torta ahogada was warm, not that hot, we asked for cups with ice and they left them on this table instead of bringing them to us or letting us know they were there. Delicious tacos and very well priced for what you get. My friend and I were able to get 4 asada tacos and a birra quesadilla; with 2 horchatas for just under $40. The tortillas are hand made and I would come here for the tortillas alone. The horchata and aqua frescas are authentic. Tacos La Bonita is are great most of the time. 3 because the pico, lemons and other toppings looked super old . Not fresh. Kinda of sad about it. Service is ok. They often get broken into they said, so not soap as it's stolen. I like washing my hands before eating so thankfully they do provide soap. Just ask! Across the plaza in Oxnard. There were plenty of people grabbing food to go. Also did not like seeing the cashier checking people out and then helping prep food for clients without changing gloves. Tried La Bonita for the first time and honestly, I was pretty disappointed. I got four tacos, tried the asada and al pastor. The asada was overcooked and super chewy, just not good. The al pastor had decent flavor but definitely not the best I've had. The homemade tortillas were thick, which made the tacos heavy instead of fresh. The only thing I actually liked was the self-serve bar with salsas, chips, onions, cilantro, and guacamole, that part was nice. But for $3.75 per taco plus tax, it's just not worth it. The pastor here is just okay to me. Again it's hit or miss, I've had it when it tastes great and I've also had it when it tastes not so great. Depending on how busy it is or how well staffed it is, the food quality varies. I feel like more often than not the food is outstanding, but I've also felt underwhelmed by the food if they're having an off day. When I asked the staff about the delay, she became upset and wouldn't acknowledge her mistake, and her rudeness made the situation worse. This is the 2nd time I've been here. The first time I went, I tried to get the tapatio ramen with birria, but they ran out. So I got the quesabirria taco and thought it was really good! The outside was nice and crunchy and the inside just had really good flavors. This time, I was able to get the tapatio soup and I also ordered more of the quesabirria with carne asada. I got it to go and by the time I ate the ramen, the soup was gone. I definitely recommend eating it as soon as you get it. There was also too much cheese in it for me. I'll ask for less cheese if I go again. The let down was the quesabirria. I forgot to take a photo of it, but it was slightly over cooked on the outside. And it didn't taste as good as the first time. The first time I went, I took it home as well, but it still remained somewhat crisp. This time it was a sloppy burnt mess with too much cheese. Super super yummy!! I've been here twice so far. For the first time I got the birria burrito and for the second time I got the quesobirria. Super delicious and filling. I got 3 quesobirrias but honestly you'd be ok with 2, it was very rich. The consome (you dip the quesobirria in this) was super flavorful. They also give you a little tostada with sautéed onions and other garnishes like pickled onions too. I loved the salsa bar, specifically the avocado salsa oh my goodness I could've literally drank it. As you can see by my photos I made sure to slather it on my food. Location of this place is alright, its outside only but they do provide seats and tables. Just be sure to bring a sweater since Oxnard can be chilly! Service was alright too. Another taco truck to review. What can I say, I love Mexican food. And this place doesn't disappoint. Here's what we got and what we thought: Carne Asada burrito - so good! The meat is wonderfully flavor and really delicious. The burrito is simple with rice, cheese, beans, and salsa. But what's so awesome that they cook the cheese on the outside of the burrito. So when you eat it, you get a nice crunchy cheesy taste that's different from other burritos. Simply amazing! Carne Asada fries - also awesome! They cook the cheese on a flattop so when it's placed on top of the chips, you get a thick layer of cheese that takes the nachos to another level. Cooking cheese on a flattop is such a great idea! Potato and bean tacos - my wife loved them. Said one of the best she's tried. Since the tacos are deep fried, they are very crunchy. It comes with a dipping sauce that worked perfectly with the tacos. Salsas - great variety of salsas to pick from and they were all great. Favorite was the tomatillo salsa, so good!
