I came in for Taco Tuesday and, honestly, it was a bit disappointing. The setup felt very unorganized from the start. They ask how many tacos you want before you even get to the taco bar or see the meat options, which made the whole process confusing. They did have a decent selection of meats like chicharrón, potato, asada, barbacoa, lengua, and pastor, but the portions were pretty small. On top of that, they were out of basic toppings like onions and cilantro, which is kind of a big deal for tacos. Sides like rice, beans, or corn on the cob are an extra $3, which didn't really feel worth it given the overall experience. It wasn't terrible, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype. They ran out of avocado salsa and did not replace it which should not have happened at 5:00 p.m. The waitress only came to our table once which I felt she could have came at least twice. Well, I'm not sure if it was a fluke or just simple lack of consistency in the quality of their food but after two vists of ordering the same exact food, the second visit was nowhere as good as the fist one. I'm not really referring to the service, the service itself was fine on both occassions but the taste and quality of the food was just not the same at all. I was actually very dissaponted the second time and it leads me to believe was it really good or was the first time that it was good just a fluke? Ate there for lunch today. first off, there was only 1 other patron in the whole restaurant. That says something considering how busy the area is with all the auto dealers nearby. I ordered a cadillac margi, not bad but overpriced at $19.00. I ordered a lunch special, enchilada & chile relleno w/rice & beans. when I got the silverware wrapped with a napkin it looked as though it was probably at someone's table and didn't get used as the napkin had red sauce on it. Then the food came out and I have to say I have never seen a chile relleno so small. At first I thought they forgot it. Upon tasting I recognized the flavor of the enchilada sauce right away because it is what I use at home, Las Palmas! I could be wrong but that is just what it tasted like. Also the cheese was tough and chewy as though it was microwaved. The chili relleno, although small did taste ok, except I have never had pico de gallo served on top of a chili relleno. Since I had a great experience, I brought my team in for lunch the next time I was there. Service was funky at lunch. They said they couldn't split the check more than 4 ways. We had 8 people and were there for work so we had to have individual checks. He said it was policy and he couldn't split it so we offered to sit at different tables if that needed to be the case. So glad we stopped in to try this spot! Have passed it on the freeway a bunch but had a craving for birria tacos so decided to give it a go. Really cute interior, fun vibes and I can tell this place definitely gets busy on weekend evenings. I had the Jarritos Loko which had tequila, watermelon Jarritos, watermelon purée, lime juice and a chamoy/tajin rim. Soooo good and refreshing! Plus the presentation was really cute! We have noticed Kalaveras in Oxnard by the Auto Mall while driving by on the 101fwy. We had gone to the location when it was a Red Lobster several times and were curious about what replaced it. All I can say is we wish we tried it sooner. As you walk in you can tell it went through a recent full renovation, no trace of the old red lobster. It features a vibrant atmosphere with a gorgeous bar as the center piece, Music was modern Mexican and was at a perfect level that did not impede conversation. We started off with a couple of Margaritas and they were both fantastic. I had the Paloma Negra, traditional silver tequila with fresh made sweet and sour on rocks with a salt rim. I really liked the salt as the grain was not too large, many restaurants use Kosher salt that falls off to quickly. The wife tried the Chamoyada, silver tequila, chamoy, mango purée on the rocks with a tahini rim. She liked it so much she had 2. Miguel brought us some fresh chips and salsa with the drinks and they were great, not just watered down tomatoes. Great roasted flavor and had a good kick. We ordered the Chicken Mole Enchiladas and the Quesa Birria Tacos. The mole was very good and complex, with the heat building with each bite, but not overwhelming. The Tacos, 3 crispy cheese tacos - slow braised beef - lime onions - avocado - cilantro - consommé. Wow we will come back for both of these dishes. We sat at the bar as we usually do if it's just the two of us. Miguel provided impeccable service starting with suggestions on the drinks. He recommended that we try the Sunday Brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas and to come back for $2 taco Tuesday. We will see you then Miguel. read more

I made a reservation a week ago for 12 people and was told I would get a confirmation text the next day and to my surprise, I actually did! I got a reminder text that the reservation was coming up and it made me feel confident that they had us on the schedule. When we got there, we were a little early and they quickly put the table together for us. They did not seem annoyed or frustrated that we were a little early. I had wanted to put some things on the table for my employees. Everyone got there and they immediately brought over water for everyone and chips and salsa. Sarah was our server and she was so friendly and welcoming. She answered all of our questions and honored all of our special requests. We have a couple picky eaters, and it was no problem at all. I went out on a limb and tried something different that I had never had, the Birria tacos. Holy cow! I literally want to go back tomorrow to have them again! They were fantastic. Everyone loved their food, everyone loved their drinks! Sara and the team were very attentive and very kind. The bill when it came was less than I was expecting and that even included the gratuity. I only regret having not been to this establishment sooner. The outside can be a little misleading. Not sure what to expect inside, but it is a fun atmosphere with music and lights, but not so much that you can't enjoy your company. However she was good with being attentive with filling water and checking on us. Terrible terrible service! Came here to watch the Mexico vs Korea game, the hostess did not know what she was doing, management was basically non existent. They hyped this game up and did not have the adequate staff. They kept telling us only 2 people were ahead of us and somehow 10 people were seated before us. Upon entering, you are greeted by a huge grey skull !! Thus the name. The dining room is spacious with plenty of tables throughout! The music, unfortunately, is so loud, you cannot have a conversation across the table. This visit we just tried the beef and chicken empanadas ! They were definitely bigger than the other location's and were tasty but the beef seemed more greasy . Then our desserts arrived .. the Churro Sandwich had so many flavours ! It had a sweetness from the ice cream amply drizzled with a berry puree and a soft cinnamon note paired with a nice muted crunch. We also enjoyed the Apple Chimichanga with ice cream. Its crispy cinnamon tortilla strips again punctuated the dessert with a sweet note without being too overbearing. Spontaneously took my mom to Kalaveras to check out the Happy Hour! HH is currently from 3pm-7pm Monday-Friday. Ordered Margaritas which were $10 each on the HH Menu. We both enjoyed our drinks!.. They had 5 Appetizers on the HH menu to choose from for $5 each. We devoured the cute Quesabirria Tacos that came w/ consommé. (You dip the Quesabirria in the soupy sauce). The Taquitos were okay, but nicely presented & rolled up in bright red tortillas. I was hungry so ofc I ate them up. Their menu offered some staples, but may seem a bit pricey for some people... The ambiance of the place was nice & open. It was the end of October, so it was nice to see the Ofrenda when you first walk in... I can see how people are complaining about the loud music. I didn't mind the music. It wasn't loud at the time, but I'm sure during the evenings & weekends it can get lit here. Our server was Tania. Happy that my friend Erica G and I finally got to try this spot for happy hour. Kalaveras has taken over the old red lobster building and the remodel looks fabulous! This is such a trendy and fun spot - a vibe that this side of Oxnard desperately needed. Walking in I loved the decor. The restaurant is dark and painted moody with pops of vibrate colors that make it feel like a rave. I love the neon touches of paint and the cool vibrant signs throughout the restaurant. The chairs were very comfortable in the dining area. There is plenty of seating, we sat in the comfortable dining tables but they also had booths and long high top benches with wide tables. Very good vibes and setup so that it seemed spacious. The bar is also stunning, would definitely be willing to sit at the bar with some friends next time. The menu here is pretty big. I was impressed with their cocktail and liquor selection. This could definitely be the spot to come for a large party and group who loves to drink. The cocktails were some of the classics and also some creative drinks. I love that they have a wide selection of margarita flavors and some fun shots! For food there are the staples like tacos and nachos but also some bar food like wings and fries. They have sushi fusion too! Very extensive menu and the regular menu is just a tad pricey. I'd highly recommend coming for Happy Hour, trust me! The hours first off are phenomenal! I am so glad to have a place that doesn't stop happy hour at 5pm, theirs goes until at least 7pm which us hard afternoon workers very much appreciate. The happy hour menu is where it's at! Most appetizer bites on happy hour are $5! Like seriously how can you beat that? They also have $10 margaritas and some other fun cocktails. The Mexican candy shots were good too and I'll get those anytime because they always hit the spot and were also cute with the tajin rim and strawberry. We mainly came here to drink but we did order their quesobirria mini tacos. Presentation was great and we loved their crispy freshly fried shells. Cheesy and good sauce. We just agreed the birria meat was a little tough so when we bit down on it the whole meat would slide out. If the meat was just a little more tender it would have been a slam dunk. The food though - AMAZING - though expensive . The biggest con to me though was that we weren't told until AFTER we ordered drinks and apps that they can't split checks and can only take a maximum of 3 cards for large groups (with 18% gratuity added). A nice midweek afternoon late lunch. The restaurant had only a couple other tables occupied, so we had the place to ourselves. The decor was very modern and I kinda enjoyed that. The background music was also a more modern Mexican style music, again, I enjoyed it. Chips and salsa to start at the table. The salsa was ice cold, obviously served straight from the refrigerator. I didn't think it was anything special, although it looked tasty. The margarita flight was fun to share. We got to taste 4 different margaritas of their choosing. Today, it was mango, hibiscus, cucumber and guava. Guava and mango for the win. Those tasted great. Props for the presentation as well.
