They're in a small brick and mortar location shared with other restaurants, so you walk up to the counter and order, then they bring your food out to your number. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I got four mini quesabirrias which were the special of the day (birria beef, steak, and chorizo). The small ones come in a corn tortilla and the large ones in flour. I especially enjoyed the flavor of the birria beef, and thought the salsa had a nice smokiness to it and wasn't too spicy. The fresh onions and cilantro added a great freshness as well. The steak and chorizo were also good, but I felt like they were more small tacos with cheese melted in them rather than dipped in a broth. Came to this unassuming place because I was craving Mexican food. I'm from Texas, so I was avoiding getting Mexican food here because I knew I'd be disappointed. However, the cravings finally hit so I caved in. I got the birria burrito here. Lots of seating around, and you pay at counter. It was busy so I think it was about 10-15 minutes for my burrito. The actual burrito itself was surprisingly good. The crisp/gently-fried exterior was very well-contrasted with the soft interior. The rice, beans, and birria were super well-seasoned. The meat was very rich and flavorful. The salsa was tangy enough to cut through some of the richness of the burrito. Not to mention, the entire burrito was very hefty. Only thing I wish was that I got a side of the actual birria consome, but alas, mistakes were made. I was very impressed by this burrito, and I want to come back to actually try birria tacos themselves, with the consome included. I don't know why but I tend to avoid the trendy when it comes to food. So when birria blew up I sat back and never tried it. But I finally gave in and decided to give birria a try at Tacos La Jefa. It's a unique spot in Dutchtown in a shared space with a couple other eateries which weren't open when I was there. The staff and service were awesome. They were genuinely concerned with whether I was happy with my meal, and made me feel very welcome. I had the Birria de Plato which came with a healthy portion of birria on consume, wonderful pinto beans, awesome flavorful rice, a 12oz cup of extra consume, 6 tortillas sauced and crisped up on a la plancha, lime wedges, raw diced onions and cilantro and a little container of a mildly spicy salsa. A hefty meal. And oh so good. Everything was hot, tasty and wonderful. Beans at any Latin restaurant in my opinion are key. If a place serves pink paste for beans I usually won't even give them a try. But the beans at this spot are so good I'd go back just for a bowl of beans, and the accoutrements. They were that good. The Birria and consume were seasoned very well. Had a wonderful flavor and the meat was fork tender. Any time I'm in the area at mealtime I'm definitely going to feel the pull of Tacos La Jefa. I needed good Quesabirria in St. Louis because I just moved here and this was recommended by a friend and DELIVERED. The quesabirria plate is more expensive than what I would expect ($17 for 3 tacos) but I am tempted to forgive it because the corn tortillas are crispy and flavorful, the tacos are so cheesy, the meat is juicy, and the consommé is beyond flavorful. I learned of this place, and Urban Eats (where they're located), during the Puerto Rican Festival. I asked if their veggie birria taco could be made vegan. I was told yes. I confirmed that it would be made with veggies and no queso/ cheese. The guy even went so far as to say "no, cheese isn't vegan." Great! So he actually knew what vegan meant! I inquired about the rice and beans as well. He stated that they were vegan friendly too, and not made with chicken broth or lard, etc. I received my taco and bit into it, trustingly... That was a mistake. The taco DEF had cheese inside. Not only have I been vegan for the past 14 years, I have never in my life been able to stomach cheese, so I unfortunately became sick afterwards. Extremely disappointing, especially after being assured they could make vegan food for me. I did reach out to Tacos La Jefa in an attempt to get them to make it right. This lil taco shop is nestled in the Urban Eats food hall in Dutchtown. There's ample seating inside which was mostly open when we arrived, maybe because it was a Thurs afternoon. The location feels pretty low key, but the food was stellar!! We got 4 quesabirria tacos + consome for ~$22. If you get the individual birria tacos, you have to get consome separately; some of the plates do come with consome though. There also are some vegetarian options on the menu (potato flautas, veggie quesadilla fajita, veggie mulitas, cheese nachos) if you're interested. I had to go here as I heard this is THE taco spot to try. We knew they were open for lunch so we went on a Sunday just before noon. We easily found street parking. It is in Urban Eats with other restaurants but they were not open. The customer service was amazing. They brought our food to us and followed up with us if we needed anything else. We ordered the quesabirra tacos. The shell was so crispy and the meat was so tender and juicy. The onion, cilantro and lime were a nice touch to add to our tacos. On the road again and found another hidden gem. Tacos La Jefa (TLJ) is an amazing and authentic pop up restaurant that truly competes with west coast Mexican cuisine. Located in South St. Louis, TLJ is located within an Urban Eats and was the most popular place based in the line out the door. Parking and seating is very limited based on the other pop up restaurants in the building and don't recommend large groups as they probably can't accommodate them. We ordered a few items to give TLJ a full test. First, we ordered the beef birria plate, a delicious and healthy portion of birria served with tortillas, rice, beans and the best part of the dish consommé, a flavorful broth for dipping. Next we ordered a carne asada Mulitas, a quasi quesadilla but with corn tortillas and loaded with cheese. The perfectly melted cheese complimented both the meat and salsas. Finally, we ordered the beef birria burrito, another home run. Generously portioned burrito with birria, beans and rice and guacamole. Two types of salsas at TLJ, green or red. Green salsa is very flavorful with a little kick, and the red is not for rookies, it brings a kick! TLJ hours of operation vary so please check Yelp to ensure your able to visit. It does take a few minutes to make your order, but 100% with the wait. We're definitely coming back next time we're in the area, highly recommend everyone give this place a try!! read more

This place is such a hole in the wall, and a part of me wants to keep this place to myself, but I would be doing a disservice to everyone! If you've never had birria tacos, this is the place to try them. Or if you've had them before, tacos la jefa will not disappoint. The only other place I've had Mexican food this authentic was in California and Mexico. It's probably the best place in St. Louis. It can be pretty hard to find, but it's tucked away inside Urban Eats. My fiancé and I ordered 3 beef tacos, a small quesabirria, mulitas, a small cup of consomé, coke, and the guava & mandarin Jarritos soda. Mexican sodas use real cane sugar and are on a different level - just get them. I am proud to say we finished everything + had room for dessert (barely). There is so much flavor in every bite, and I didn't want it to end. Tacos: these are probably my favorite here. The meat was very tender and flavorful, and the hot sauce they provide on the side definitely has a kick but is really nice. Add it with the chopped cilantro and onion + dipped in consomé, and it is perfection. I wish I ordered a 4th one. Quesabirria: also enjoyed while dipping in the consomé. There was so much cheesy goodness packed into this one + a generous amount of beef. Mulitas: this was a special they were having. The boss lady recommended steak for this one, and it was good! It was packed with meat, guacamole, cilantro, and onions. I also dipped this in the hot sauce + consomé. Y'all. In honor of 3.14 day I'm reviewing a local business! My husband and I have been watching some documentaries on food and we saw one on the history of birria tacos and we knew he *had* to try it. We love food from all cultures but we recognize and appreciate Americanized versions of the food of other cultures BUT we feel it's really important to seek out authentic versions of the foods we are learning about! Plus, *la* jef*a* indicated to me that this was likely a female-owned business or at least had a very awesome female matriarch somewhere in this -- or both! Tacos la Jefa is a pop-up shop inside Urban Eats. It's legit. First, get the quesabirria. Just get it. Also get the larger consommé if you're sharing birria. Second, we have only had the beef and plan to get back for the other proteins. The beef is incredible- just so tender, so flavorful, so fall apart delicious. The birria comes with a big tin of all the cilantro and onions. The salsa served with it is *HOT*... and I LOVE IT! The consommé is such the star of the dish... it's so flavorful (*don't* think for a second this is like a bland beef bouillon cube in hot water) and adds this delightful juiciness to already tender proteins. Service was friendly, helpful, food was fast, carry out was packaged nicely (since there isn't really any dine-in in there) and the food was still piping hot after a 15 minute drive home.
