This place is pretty good. St. Louis doesn't have a lot of good Mexican restaurants. The standards here are pretty low. The salsa were just OK, and the chips a bit thick for my tastes. It seems like it would be a good place to get tacos for the folks are the skate park a couple of blocks away. We ordered takeout from here last week. My friend and I both got chicken tinga machetes. The food was good and phone ordering was easy. The only downfall is I couldn't find a menu online with current prices. We were very surprised to find that it was $40 for two machetes. For comparison when I ordered from here a few years back the machetes were around $10, so prices doubled. I know prices of things have gone up everywhere, but it's just a big quesadilla/taco. Not enough chicken and filling to constitute that price in my opinion. read more

This place is a hidden gem in South City. The price point is affordable, and the menu is strong. You can get that standard mexican restaurant fare like tacos and quesadillas, but you can also get items that are much more regionally unique such as cemitas, pambazos, and machetes. While the term "authentic" gets thrown around a lot (and what does that mean, really?), I think this place gets at what people mean when they use that word. The menu and food are prepared with a Mexican audience in mind, and it is not the standard Mexican cheesy slop you will find at places like el Maguey, el Paisano, or Burro Loco. I got a Huarache, which is sort of like a thicker corn tortilla that is fried and has meat (I chose al pastor), cheese, crema, and lettuce on top. It delivered, although it took maybe 20 minutes to arrive and the place was no busy. Small knock. If you check this place out, I encourage you to try one of their specials, or a cemita or pambazo, which are items you won't find at most other restaurants. La Poblanita offers something you won't get at your average Mexican restaurant. read more

The term "hidden gem" is overused I think so let me say that this hard to find, easy to miss, underrated but fantastic restaurant has become one of our favorites. This is truly Mexican food. It's not Americanized. It's not Tex/mex. It's authentic. I like mex/American and Tex/mex both but this place serves some very special food and the difference is noteworthy. The food is simple and straightforward. There is not a lot of gooey cheese on everything. The ingredients are really well prepared, seasoned just right. My go to is a steak machete but the specials are delightful. Some of the specials are seasonal or just available on weekends. The restaurant is small, very clean, very cheerful. Great tacos on South Morganford! I ordered one pastor and one asada taco. A taco costs $2 here. The tacos came out in true taqueria fashion, adorned with nothing more than sliced onion and cilantro. The pastor was juicy and spicy, and came with little bits of grilled pineapple mixed in with the meat. The asada taco came with a generous amount of steak and was quite flavorful as well. I did also get a red and green salsa. The green salsa was a delicious cilantro lime concoction and the red was smoky and fairly spicy as well. Best Mexican food I've had in St Louis. This coming from an Angeleno. Not the typical, copy cat, midwestern Mexican menu, and none of that dreadful cheese sauce in sight! Typical taqueria fare, but also some unusual dishes for stl such as huaraches, sopes, and their machete, all made with homemade masa. Also some more substantial entrees.
