I heard about Corey and Tact Massage from Lonna, who is a chiropractor in the same building. Booking a session was very easy and I really appreciated the fact that I didn't need to put down my credit card to guarantee the booking: it gave me a first clue of what kind of person Corey is. I didn't really have any health complaints, but I like getting massages: it is one hour where I can just let my thoughts drift and have someone else take care of me. Like many people, I associate massage with relaxation and spa-like surrounding. The stereo-typical massage therapist is dressed in some white clothes and oozes sensuality and well-being. Corey and his practice is different; different in good way though. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted by a what I associated with a typical San Franciscan, dressed in a plaid shirt and a big commuter rucksack; he probably had just biked to his practice. He then told me a little bit about what I'd be expecting over the next hour, before I got ready for the actual massage. I then expected him to start "massaging" my body, but instead I witnessed how his hands applied light pressure on my back. While doing so, he commented on areas that he thought were a bit tight and/or needed some attention. After that, I pretty much let him do "his thing". I had complete trust in him...in fact, I apparently fell asleep at various times during the session. (Corey said something along the lines of: "I noticed that when I'd just relieved the tension on various sections of your body, I noticed you started to snore lightly...") After the session, Corey walked me through what he'd done and he pointed to various muscles on the anatomy chart on the wall next to the massage table. I can only agree with all the other Yelpers, especially Kevin N, who says: "Corey is an intellectual who combines his academic knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology with his natural gift of tactile memory." I also liked that Corey didn't do the guilt trip on me that I associate with some other massage therapists. Something like: "Oh, your body is really tense and I think we should see each other on a regular basis. In other words: your body is a total mess and I can help you fix it." Corey simply said that it would probably be good for me to come back for another session and work on some other areas, but that in general I'm in pretty good shape. I was referred to Corey by a friend. I was expressing unhappiness with my other massage experiences because I'm a bodybuilder, and the therapists never seem to be able to do much beyond a superficial rub-down. True to the reviews, Corey is seriously awesome. I'm new to the pressure point massage technique (always having believed the more it hurt, the better). I've been to Corey two times so far, and both times, I have left feeling very relaxed (think savasanah x3) and without any pain. Corey is gentle, but firm on releasing muscle tension. It's funny when Corey breathes out with a sigh of relief every time he's released a knot, but it just goes to show that he really tries to connect to your body and tension when he's working! I am soooo glad that I was able to get a massage from Corey during my trip to San Francisco! I got my first of many massages from Corey six or seven years ago. I've had scoliosis and chronic back pain since childhood and massage does so much more for it than pain medications, acupuncture, and chiropractic work combined. Even though I moved back to Hawaii two years ago, I still have not found anyone here that does as good a job as he does. It was great to see Corey again and I can say that he continues to be a wonderful massage therapist and to grow with experience. As always, Corey was very aware of how I was responding to what he was doing and altered his methods accordingly -- he is definitely not one of those people who has a set idea of what they are going to do and just plows through their routine. Although Corey no longer has calluses from doing plumbing and geology fieldwork, he will always have big hands that can cover a good portion of your back all at once, and a hell of a reach. I am so happy to know that Corey is now able to make a living doing massage because he's great at it, he loves it, and he's helping people. The options for scheduling appointments are AWESOME! I commute and get home late and in general my schedule is crazy! I super appreciate the ease of scheduling an appointment and the late hours. The massage was awesome!! I have had literally HUNDREDS of massages, rolfing sessions, etc. and can tell immediately if I am actually going to get some relief or if I'm going to be cringing the whole massage knowing I'm in the hands of a rookie. This review is embarassingly overdue.. I received a 90 minute massage from Corey back in August and it was great! It was my first time visiting a male massage therapist and Corey was very professional yet warm. I let him know I was having major knots in my neck so he had me lay on my back and started in right away (I've since discovered it's much better to lay on my back than my stomach for neck work). He got down in those knots and was able to relieve SO much tension; it was truly amazing. It's wonderful that he's able to relieve pressure without going too hard on the pressure (I normally like pretty deep pressure too) and I wasn't overly sore the next day. I appreciated that he has a great knowledge of the body and was able to inform me where he felt tension. Before the session ended, he did some work on my lower back/glutes, upper legs and found some knots that I didn't even know where there! So if you have done any recent exercise (or hiking, like I did), definitely let him know. It felt GREAT to have some work done, I wish I would have realized it earlier!! He also showed me some great stretches to use with my lower back that I still use consistently. I've been using up some of those daily deals (groupon, bloomspot, etc) and I have to say that Corey has been the best of the bunch. Before today, it had been a few years since I've had a massage. I went to see Cory on the recommendation of a few friends. They said 'He gives the best massage I've ever had'. Even though a few people have told me this, I was a little skeptical. Really, the Best?? It turns out hey we're right! I lived with two massage therapists in college. They practiced on me. Besides being totally relaxed, I learned a lot from them. So, before Cory started he asked a few questions about how I'm feeling, if there is any tightness or issues that I'm having. I quickly answered as I wanted to get on the table. Cory did not disappoint at all! The massage was amazing. He focused on areas I mentioned, but found others that I wasn't even aware of. He actually listened to what I had said. Unlike other massage therapists who ask, but just go thru the motions once you get on the table. It was an amazing experience and he defiantly knows his anatomy and musculature. Besides all the obvious muscles work, his nimble fingers worked the tiny ones too, that I didn't even know existed until he worked the knots out. Two words: MAGIC HANDS. I'm pretty athletic and have always carried my stress in my shoulders, neck and back. I'd been to several massage therapists before and was usually underwhelmed by their ability to 1) find my problem spots and 2) work on them deep enough to really feel any different. It was completely different with Corey. He immediately identified my problem areas and applied focused, experienced pressure in ways that got to the depth of the problem but weren't painful. He even found and worked on areas that I hadn't realized were problems. It was amazing!! It was not only extremely pleasant during the massage, but afterwards I felt my shoulders release for the first time in at least 10 years! I went home and slept like a baby. Got a trubates deal for a 60 min massage. Amazing massage. Dude definitely knows his trigger/pressure points. Too bad he's a bit too expensive (though well worth it) for me to be able to afford on a regular basis. He does offer return customer discount though. Parking was plenty. I went on a Sunday night. The entrance is a bit hard to find. You have to walk down the 1 way street to the door to get rung up to his studio, which is small but cozy. I had deep lower back pain attributed to a snowboard fall last season and after 3 different massages at places like Burke William spa, Union square, and some other mall massage it was Corey who took me from pain to no pain. This might sound hyperbolic but I don't care - Corey has a true gift as a massage therapist in the form of his sensitive, well trained fingertips. The phrase on his website "Precisely Therapeutic" sums it up nicely. He can feel where the tension is and respond appropriately to release it without the use of brute force. As others have mentioned, he tailors his treatment specifically to his client - no routine patterns/boring rub downs - he focuses and heals on what is bothering you. I recently had a major surgery, and the physical therapy exercises resulted in some very sore glut and hamstring muscles - Corey has given me real relief. I loved the massage I got from Cory. It was gentle, but very deeply healing and relaxing. He works carefully with trigger points and seems to have mastered the art, as well as the science, of giving a great massage. I slept really well after the massage, and felt great at dance class the next day. I would definitely recommend him. If you want a truly professional and unique experience, get a massage from Corey. I have tried numerous therapists over the years and Corey fulfilled every requirement I had. Precise, skilled, educated, intuitive, deep tissue work is his specialty. I prefer deep tissue in some areas and in more injured areas I prefer less pressure. I carry a lot of stiffness/tension in my entire body from mountain biking, boxing, walking/jogging, having a desk job, etc. I was sore and stiff before my massage, especially the right side of my body. There was also a sharp pain under my right shoulder. The focus of the massage was almost entirely on my lower/upper back, shoulders, and neck. And the sports massage actually felt great--relaxing, not painful at all like some sports massages. I felt much better after the massage. I got on my bicycle to ride home and realized immediately that I no longer felt stiff and creeky. Plus I was really pleased to notice that the sharp pain under my right shoulder was completely gone.
