The first thing I noticed when I visited was the sheer size of the place. The Jiu Jitsu area is downright gigantic! Other BJJ gyms I have visited are lucky to have 1/4 the mat space of Tekniques. The BJJ area is stocked with high quality Zebra tatmi mats, has comfortable seating, and is separated from the rest of the gym. This allows for a quiet, focused learning environment during BJJ training. The other portion of the gym contains a large tatami mat area for what Tekniques calls HIT (High Intensity Training). This class is similar to crossfit but without the hype. This area also contains a sizable Muay Thai kickboxing training area with heavy bags and appropriate mats. Other amenities include clean restrooms/changing areas and a kids' play room with a TV. Instruction at Tekniques is top notch. The adult BJJ classes are large enough to be diverse but small enough so that each person gets individual time with the instructors. Belt diversity is good - I am a white belt and am able to roll with white, blue, and purple belt practitioners every time I train. The more advanced students are more than willing to pause, answer questions, and take time to make sure you are learning the art. There are opportunities for competition, and the instructors assist students in preparing for numerous Jiu Jitsu tournaments in the area. I have a 6 year old son in the kids' BJJ program. I couldn't be more pleased. There are a LOT of kids training at Tekniques, but never so many that it's out of control. There is an appropriate student to instructor ratio. Perhaps most important (and impressive) is the care given to the safety of the students. For example, whenever the kids are training live submissions such as arm bars, the instructors are within 6 inches of the students, ready to pounce and intervene so that the student being submitted is not injured. I am very comfortable with the level of attention and safety given to my child and the other children who train there. The kids also compete in local tournaments and IBJJF sanctioned tournaments with great success. Muay Thai and HIT training is intense. The instructor is encouraging, careful, and drives the students hard. He takes time to explain the movements and exercises and will work individually with students who are having troubles. He instills a sense of teamwork, competition, and comradery in his students. Coupled with the Jiu Jitsu training, the Muay Thai and HIT classes will whip you into shape in a hurry. If you are nearby and are looking for a fun, inviting atmosphere in which to train Jiu Jitsu, HIT, or Muay Thai, then Tekniques is the place. I can't speak highly enough of the staff, my fellow students, and the environment.

Nice environment with great people. It was made easy for my first visit, but also challenging.read more

I've been training there now for close to 2 years and love it. In Master Lawing you will find a seasoned, expert instructor who will train in the fundamentals of your art, provide motivation, and share accumulated wisdom from his decades of experience running martial arts schools. In addition to fundamental mastery, students will find ample opportunity to train in realistic self defense scenarios and fill in gaps with other forms of martial arts. When ready, students also can engage in either light- or full-contact sparring (with protective gear) in a controlled and safe environment. There is a real sense of family and community at this school. I would also like to say that there is one negative review here that makes several claims that I have simply found not to be true, at all.

If your goal in martial arts training is real-world self-defense, discipline under pressure, and…read morethe ability to apply techniques against a live opponent, you may want to carefully reconsider this school. My experience with IntoArts has been extremely disappointing. The program appears to focus heavily on going through motions and earning belts, but lacks meaningful opportunities for students to apply what they've learned in realistic or full-contact situations. Punching bags and rehearsed drills do not prepare anyone for unpredictability, resistance, or real-world encounters. A system that promotes students to higher ranks--up to black belt--without pressure testing their skills raises serious concerns about the value of that training. If, however, your goal is optics--collecting belts, certificates, and staged accomplishments without true application--then this may be a good fit. Beyond the curriculum concerns, the leadership approach is equally troubling. The owner seems to spend a disproportionate amount of time sharing stories from past experiences or correcting children, rather than delivering structured, engaged instruction that develops students. Constructive coaching and development appear secondary. More concerning is how situations are handled when questioned. When I raised concerns as a father--calmly and directly--regarding decisions that impacted my child, the response was not professional dialogue. Instead, my child was abruptly removed from the roster, and the situation escalated unnecessarily to the point where law enforcement was contacted. That level of escalation for a non-threatening parental concern is, at best, poor judgment and, at worst, deeply troubling. As a parent, my responsibility is to advocate for my child--especially when those decisions affect his development and well-being. The way this situation was handled reflects a lack of professionalism, accountability, and sound leadership. In short: * Limited real-world application of skills * Promotion without proof of performance under pressure * Questionable instructional priorities * Unprofessional handling of parent concerns Martial arts should build confidence, discipline, and capability--not just appearance. Based on my experience, this program falls short in delivering where it matters most.
