Best place for first timers. We signed our daughters up for private lessons for their first time skiing. Since my wife and I snowboard we knew we were not best suited to teach them and we wanted them to start off with skiing first since it's easier to learn. They were taught by the very best, Coach Patty! She is phenomenal and did great with our girls. Our girls had so much fun and improved so much from start to finish that they're now chairlift ready. Highly recommend taking your little ones here for lessons. I also want to note that they have a brand new lodge and it's awesome. Everything is new, clean, and nice. We ate lunch here as well and the food wasn't bad either. We'll definitely be back to take the girls skiing again! read more

Conveniently located a 15 minute drive outside the charming Northern California town of Truckee. The name is appropriate. This is a down hill ski resort. Its highest elevation is below 7,400' feet. By comparison Vail's lowest elevation is more than 8,000' feet. Skiing here does occur on mountainous terrain but with well under 200 skiable acres compared to 5,300 at Vail. This is a small-scale resort and certainly cute. Those accustomed to Colorado or European skiing might find it limited. That said, it has all the makings of a perfect place to learn the sport especially if it's a child skier or beginner. read more

February 2025 Review of Mountain. Paid $89 for Friday Lift Ticket. This mountain is great if you're learning or a kid, not very good for anything else. It's a very small ski mountain, there's only 1 lift for everybody and it's super slow. There's also another lift for the bunny hill but only beginners use that one so I'm not counting that. The terrain is poor, even though it snowed, it was still icy which was weird. The black runs here are blues, and the blues are greens, and the green runs are super flat. This mountain is for ski'ers, not a very good mountain for snowboarders unless you are learning. There was no one here today, so felt like you had the mountain to yourself, that was good, except you can literally get from the top to bottom in 2 minutes it feels like, and the ski lift is so slow feels like 5- 10 minutes to get up the mountain. The walk from the parking lot is pretty long and steep, I'm fit it was fine for me, most people take the shuttle. Also currently there is no lodge at all, they are actively building in. So yea not planning to come here again, it was fun, but there are much better out there. read more

Misleading website. I got on the website after midnight and it said that all lifts were closed (not pending like it was supposed to). I assumed it wasn't going to open on opening day like it had said earlier. I emailed at the time requesting a refund. I got up at 6 am to an email saying they are open and that their website was wrong and that they "were not accountable" for what their website said as "we hire a third party to manage it". Not the response I expected. Instead, figured they would apologize and say they would take it up with the third party. At any rate, it resulted in us missing half day skiing and a lot of back and forth. Fix your gosh darn gone website! It's 2026! Oh, and train your staff on better customer service. A voucher for the half day I missed would have been reasonable given it wasn't my fault your website is wrong. read more

Tahoe Donner ski resort is a great place to go if you are a beginner/intermediate or have kids. It's a small hill with 17 runs, 2 chairlifts, and a magic carpet. There are barely any lines and getting to and from the car is simple. You can either walk (maybe a 3-4m walk) or take the shuttles (comes every 5m or so). The lodge will be closing next year for a massive renovation. I love taking my 2.75yo old or getting in a couple of runs during my kids nap time. Now for the negative. Even though the resort is super small, it's still quite pricey to ski here. If you are a homeowner, you get discounted pricing ($49/day for adult, $15/day for 6 and under). For the public, an adult pas is $90/day with kids passes at $25/day (6 and under). For the 2023/2024 season, prices are supposed to go up 30% making a homeowner season pass around $400 which isn't a far cry from Northstars Epic season pass. Also, they close much earlier than most resorts. This year, even with our record breaking snowfall, they will be closing on April 9 with an additional weekend on April 14-16. Other resorts are staying open well into end of April or even July (Palisades/Alpine). Will I continue to ski TD downhill? Yep! It's close, no traffic, and I can get 6-8 runs done in an hour. read more

I love Table Donner! It's a small mountain and perfect for a nice day out skiing or snowboarding. This mountain is very family friendly and great for beginners. The lodge is a bit small so make sure you get there early to claim a spot if you have someone in your group that won't be doing any snow sports. There's a variety of difficulty levels and if you prefer not to be on the groomed paths I suggest doing the back side of the mountain because the front is almost entirely groomed. We put our children in ski lessons for President's week and it was a big mistake, especially for the 7-12 children group. Firstly the class sized varied: 6 kids the first day, 12 kids the second day (which they eventually created another group after half a morning) and 9 kids the third day. This ended up being glorified babysitting with the larger groups. Lessons groupings are parent self selected and they placed a child who HAD NOT been on a chair lift in the most advanced group?? Only did I say something did that child get removed. But why was this child allowed in the advanced group in the first place? There were also two other children in this same group who clearly could not turn or stop. Again, incorrect leveling that instructors did nothing to rectify it! The remainder of the children could only then ski the most basic hill (Snowbird). They skied Snowbird twice in 2 hours!! My child skied Snowbird 3 times in about 30 minutes independently prior to the lesson. This group also took 1.5 hour lunch! With this being said, my other child's snowflake lessons went well. He was in the most advanced group and the lessons were consistently 5 children or less. He skied all the green and blue runs. Overall satisfied with these set of lessons. Though the other Snowflake groups seemed to have a lot more children. We thought a smaller resort would have better quality. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Next time we will head to NorthStar where they guarantee maximum of 6 children and where lessons actually cost less. If they implemented some better quality control and give parents honest feedback on their child's actual abilities this place could have potential. read more

They used to allow all kids under age 6 to ski for free. On Tuesdays, if you bring a child, an adult can ski for free. Free skiing! Sadly that ended with Covid :(. But the past memories I'll treasure forever! Since we have our own equipment, it was 100% free! Kinda feel bad now! The best!! What it's not: Not for advanced skiers Wild snowboarders Tips: - rent your skis somewhere else down the hill (like in Auburn or Roseville), or wherever home is to you. Cheaper and faster! Better yet, buy some at the end of the season - best (and cheapest!) skiing is midweek - free parking and shuttle. Park closer to the shuttle stops (even if you have to go to a lower tier parking lot) - There are only 2 lifts-- snowbird (bunny slope), and Eagle (easy intermediate). - great deck and fire pit outside - clean bathrooms upstairs and downstairs, and a rack for warming and drying your gloves near the 2nd level bathroom - super small, so you can "see" your kids pretty much everywhere they go (unless they go on the backside of Eagle). I feel super safe with my kids skiing w/ a friend, since the resort is small. - at the end of the day, you can ski down the little hill, almost to the shuttle pick up spot! They only have two small lifts and the runs are basically for beginners only yet they charge about the same price as the biggest and best resorts. An absolutely perfect place to learn how to snowboard! My best friends, my boyfriend, and I came on a Tuesday during the second week of January this year to do some runs. It was my best friend's and my first time, while my boyfriend and her boyfriend were already experienced. We had to forgo the snowboarding private lessons for the day as they were full, so we decided to just wing it on the bunny slope. There was NEVER a wait for the lift! The mountain was also fairly empty, despite there being a lot of people at the resort. There was ample space to have fun and learn on the go while not having to worry about holding anyone up. We rented gear here, and I just wanted to give a special shoutout to Kayla from rentals (with the really pretty hair and piercings). She provided us with exemplary customer service. So, so sweet, and so supportive of it being our first time at the resort. We were fitted promptly, and our snowboards were given to us within five minutes! During one of our runs, my best friend lost her snowboard as it went bye-bye down the mountain. Luckily enough, someone turned it in back to rentals, and we were able to get a new one for her right away. Kayla assured us that they ran into this often and that we needn't feel bad for the inconvenience! While we were doing our runs, there were many children (I'd say 5-7 years old) practicing on our bunny slope as part of their private lessons. The instructors that we overheard and witnessed were excellent. Very professional and very great with the kids, super encouraging and very, very patient! The kids were doing amazing. I can tell that they really appreciated the positivity! All in all, a very wonderful experience for our first time on the slopes! Will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to get some runs in without having to wait, or anyone who is trying to learn how to snowboard and just needs something easy to get started! read more

This was a great place to brush up on our skiing skills! Several people in my group took lessons and all the instructors were knowledgeable. We signed up for group lessons but two of us got private lessons because there wasn't other adults on their levels. We went the middle of January on a Saturday and bought lift tickets online. We arrived at 9:15, parked, picked our rental equipment, and got checked into our lessons by 10:10. More experienced skiers may be bored here as there is limited challenging slopes and most of their runs are short. There are also only two lifts so we were waiting a 2-7 min for each lift. read more

My kids (age range 3-9) took lessons here and I highly recommend it! The kids were all first timers, and and instructors were kind and helpful. The set up is ideal for beginners. They have two "magic carpet" tow lifts that are easy for beginners to master, and there were 3-4 different bunny slopes so kids could work their way up. Great place for family and new riders. The price is affordable and instructor/lift operators are amazing. Really love the vibe here. There is only two lifts, if you've been riding for a while, they're all easy. The great thing is that even though the slopes are simple, the long run and opportunities to mess with the terrain is wonderful. The lines go by fast because it's not as popular. The trailhead is located down the street from the Tahoe Donner lodge. This is where we began our moonlight snowshoe trek up to Tahoe Donner summit. Yes indeed, a night hike in the bitter cold is what I did on New Year's Eve 2018 and it's what I signed up for again NYE 2019. I suppose one might call this an extremely late, or a "smidge" early post for next year. Unfortunately snowshoeing doesn't lend the opportunity to use my personal device unless we are stopped and on a break. And I realized quite quickly that due to freezing temps I had to go cold turkey with my PD because it was risky to take off my gloves and tag my friends lest my fingers might freeze. my rogue group and I trekked up a class 4 snow covered mountain in freezing cold pitch darkness. All the while I mulled over in my head why I didn't simply go to that warm cozy New Years party... an afterthought indeed. At the top of the ridge we planted our walking sticks in the snow and unclipped our snowshoes. One of our REI guides used a waist harness to tow a mobile fire pit, which was attached to a sled up the mountain. We all huddled around the makeshift fire pit and sipped hot cocoa (mine topped off with a shot of Kahlúa from a flask my friend had.) I chatted with my new friends and during moments of silence we all sounds of nature as the new year rolled in. read more

Great place for beginners. There is hardly no wait for the lifts. It is not crowded so you're beginner skier or snowboarder doesn't really have to worry about crashing into another beginner. I brought my 6 year old son to learn to ski and he learned within 30 minutes and this was during Christmas Eve. The next day, Christmas Day it was not crowded at all. I was able to bring him on the blue slopes. He is able to ski down those blues with ease. Also renting skis was very easy. No crowds so I was able to get his skis very fast. And the staff was very friendly. From the ticket area, the rental team, and the folks working the lists, the staff was very friendly. We will check this place out again after my older son's wrestling season is over. Looking forward to some good snowboarding and skiing for my family. read more

I learned to ski at Tahoe Donner 30 years ago and was excited to finally take my son there to try skiing. We bought him a 2-hour beginner group lesson package and trusted that he would be in good hands at "the best place to learn." Unfortunately, our $260 was completely wasted. I could tell right at the start that the instructor, a young lady from Chile, was overwhelmed with her group of six kids aged 7-9. She didn't seem to know what it meant for a kid to be a beginner. She expected them to just follow her down the hill and didn't show them how to do it. My son was getting frustrated that he couldn't keep up, and there was absolutely no sympathy from the instructor. "Come on! You can do it!" But she didn't show him how to do it. There are two magic carpet conveyor lifts in the beginner's learning area, and 20 minutes into the lesson, the one that my son's group was using broke down and was roped off by ski patrol. It was already a crowded weekend, and now all the learners were funneled onto one, slow-moving conveyor. They were standing for 10 minutes just waiting to get on the conveyor. This is hard for a frustrated 7 year old to do. My son was having a hard time and the instructor clearly couldn't handle that kind of problem, so I pulled him from the lesson. I went to the manager to see what he could do. I was looking for a refund or discount because of the poor instruction and the breakdown of their equipment that is so important to the lessons. The manager didn't even believe me when I told him the conveyor was broken. He said "it's probably working again by now." No, it was closed for the rest of the day. He said their policy is they don't give refunds for any reason. Bottom line, we won't be going back to Tahoe Donner. Do yourself a favor and try Donner Ski Ranch instead. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. Prior to having my son I probably would have never come here. It's a very small resort in Truckee that is amazing if you are a beginner or on a tight budget. Lift tickets are super cheap at $69/person which is almost half the price of the other larger resorts we go to. There are 2 main lifts and they go the speed of snails because there are a large number of families with small children that frequent this resort. There are not a lot of bells and whistles to this place, but they do have the standard bar, cafeteria like breakfast/lunch place, rental store, and locker room. They also have a glove warmer near the bathroom which is nice and the women's bathroom has a changing table. The runs themselves are very beginner/intermediate friendly. The blue runs are more like green and the black runs are a more difficult blue run. I've been here twice and during both times it's not very crowded and the runs are so wide it allows you to essentially have the whole mountain to yourself to learn, practice a new skill, or take instagram photos. Again, the runs aren't very challenging, but it is an amazing place to learn and is very family friendly. Sadly there is no babysitting, but I've seen parents on both occasions ergobaby their little ones. Note: the minimum age for lessons is 3 years old and I would recommend booking for that in advance since both times the lessons were booked up. read more

Fabulous. Two lifts and nice area for chilling. Cafeteria food is above average (although I had to send the corn dogs back because they were cold) and you get a lot for your money. The mitt and shoe dryers are a nice touch and the bar has some good drinks. Unfortunately their lessons are pretty popular and they were completely sold out on the day of, so if you plan to do lessons, make sure you book in advance. There's no real designated parking but there are staff to direct you to free off lot parking, and they have designated shuttle area if you don't feel like walking 1000 feet or so. read more

Highly recommended for beginners and intermediate level skaters. Our kid learned the first ski lesson here with Antonia. She's a wonderful teacher and great with kids. They spent first two hours at the learning slopes and in the afternoon they went multiple times at blue slopes to practice. She made my daughter feel comfortable and independent. By the end of day. I was very impressed that my daughter was able to go on slope independently. And I had Santiago for an adult lesson first time ever in my life. This place is wonderful for ski/snowboard beginners. Both kids and adults had a fantastic time learning how to snowboard/ski on the mountain. They offer a reasonable ski/snowboard lesson if you're interested. Luckily for us, we had our own organic ski/snowboarding instructor in our group. If you're needing to have an instructor, you can request an instructor from the website or by calling the resort. They also offer rental ski stuff and gear. They have a dining area with hot chocolate and appetizers, though a bit pricey. read more

Wait times during peak season is several hours to get your ticket and rentals. We arrived at 1015am and it's now 120pm and we still haven't received our rental gear. This places closes at 4pm. The wait is longer than the time on the slope! Update : Manager was understanding of the issue and made it right. Even though the rental issue apparently persists, the slopes are great. Just be aware of the issue, and perhaps get your rental skis/snowboards before you come here to avoid the wait. read more

This review is specifically for their kids ski lessons. One of my kids unfortunately got sick on the morning of her ski lessons and couldn't attend, but Tahoe Donner would not reschedule her lessons for another day. I know that other slopes around the area would reschedule in such a situation. Their policy seems unnecessarily strict since kids often get sick and it's not something you can control. To be clear, I was not asking for a refund. I just wanted for my kid to make up their lesson on a different day. From a business perspective, it would have been good for Tahoe Donner because I would have had to buy more lessons for my other kid and lift tickets for myself during the makeup session, but I now instead have decided to never go to Tahoe Donner again. read more

Ten stars for the Tahoe Donner ski lessons!! I'm so impressed! They were so great with our kids - far better than our last lesson experience (at Granlibakken). Our three year old was reluctant to try lessons at first, but they were so patient with him. They played snowballs for awhile, and soon he was bombing down the hill with his instructor, with a giant grin on his face. He had so much fun!! I took my first ski lesson ever at a 30+ age at Donner. My instructor was Ryder and he was fantastic and extremely patient for the two hours while also challenging me when necessary. I could balance myself and tried the pizza and fries technique. We then took a break for lunch and had the most delicious vegetarian pizza with amazing ingredients like fresh arugula. We are vegetarian and it's so hard to get such great quality food. We went back to practice after lunch by ourselves and I could quickly control my speed and stop myself. I hated pizzas until I didn't IFYKYK Can't wait to continue and learn how to turn and go to slightly more inclined slopes (with 5 yr olds instead of 3) Thanks Ryder! This place really was The Grinch that stole Christmas!! Our family bought $780 worth of lift tickets and rental gear, but when we arrived, we had to wait an hour and a half just to get lift tickets, only to be told that we would have to go into a separate line to wait another hour and a half to get equipment! Yikes!!! Tried to talk with management reasonably about refund since we weren't able to get equipment, but would only offer a credit. Kind of worthless, since we're not from this area. Had to seek remediation through my credit card company. This experience was not unique to us. We come and ski here regularly this Covid year and honestly enjoy our family time every time. BUT -- yesterday we had a very unfortunate experience with the shuttle driver. Social distancing is a must these days of course and they keep half the shuttle bus empty to ensure this necessary guideline. This holiday weekend (President's Day weekend) one driver, Clark was his name I believe, piled AS MANY PEOPLE AS HE COULD onto his shuttle. Every seat was taken (instead of every other row) and he even had people stand one on top of the other in the aisle throughout the entire shuttle. Social distancing obviously was impossible and we were all (involuntarily) breathing on each other. We got on the shuttle as the first group and got cornered in the back and when we complained about the safe capacity being full, the driver told us we can walk instead. We had 2 small kids with us hence the choice of a short shuttle ride. Very irresponsible on the ski resort behalf and very easily avoidable! Other shuttle drivers here keep a close eye on the number of people entering the bus and it works smoothly. We were shocked and disgusted by the careless nature of this particular shuttle driver (and also by the other bus riders just piling inside, but that's another story) and really hope it will be avoided in a future! If you are concerned about your health and safety guidelines being put into place, you might want to reconsider another ski resort. And I pray the resort management sees this and does something about it. read more

Affordable for families and it will make your little feel like they are king of the hill because a beginner to intermediate little skier can ski the whole mountain as it is not big nor difficult. The have two lifts. For us it is a half to 3/4 day kind of place and it will not break the bank. They are super friendly and helped us out with ski rentals for my son too. BUYER BEWARE!!! Never pre-pay for a lift ticket! Just buy at location, day of, when you are sure everyone is skiiing--it will save you a ton of money! My family rented an AirBnb for the week. We traveled from out of town so we were nervous that we wouldn't be able to ski if we didn't pre-order our tickets online due to COVID and crowds. This place was dead and we would have never had a problem skiing, but preordering the tickets gave us more problems! Unfortunately, they take their "No refunds" policy very seriously and do not provide refunds at all. Just found out wife is pregnant 2 days before our trip. It being a high risk pregnancy, Dr recommended not skiing (like many other recommendations you'll find on line) and the best they could do was a "credit". I guess I'll have to do another weekend trip for my son and I to spend this credit. Additionally, yesterday was 20mph wind gusts, snowing steadily, and my 8 yo (his first time skiing) was afraid to ski because of the conditions. I asked if we could just get his ticket pushed to the next day. Well, too bad! We had to eat that ticket as well! For a place that advertises itself as a family friendly resort, they do not accommodate family situations in which they would have to provide any customer service. read more

We took our kids skiing here over the recent spring break. It was a great experience for them. This place advertises itself as "a great place to begin", and they're absolutely correct about this. We're effectively a non-skiing family. The first time I skied was 25 years ago; the second time was 2 months ago. We took our kids (4 and 6 years old) to a small midwestern ski area where they first got a taste of skiing, and took this most recent opportunity to see how much they really liked it. They have a reasonably-priced "Snowflakes" program for new skiers up to age 6, with very patient and kid-friendly teachers. Both our kids enjoyed it, though the 2.5 hour lesson was a little long for my younger child. Make no mistake, this is a small ski resort, especially as compared to some of the marquee sites nearby like Squaw Valley. It only has two lifts, one of which services a very gentle beginner's slope. The larger lift give you access to a handful of intermediate runs and a couple so-called black-diamond runs, but as compared to black diamonds that I have seen (not skied) at other areas, they clearly aren't as challenging. Still, when you take your 6-year-old down and give her the opportunity to tell her friends that she did a black diamond, you'll both feel a sense of pride. I got the impression from other skiers that this resort doesn't get nearly as crowded as other nearby ski areas, even during the busy times like ski week. The slopes were practically empty during this last week of their ski season, which is also a good thing for beginners. We'll be back a few times next year, including ski week, so we'll see if this is really true. Prices are fair; for non-Tahoe Donner members it's $39 for an adult. Lift tickets for kids 6 and under are free; I didn't see the rates for older kids. There isn't much to the lodge - just a bar and grill with burgers and dawgs and the like. read more

Tahoe Donner Resort--the best place to fall on your butt a billion times before you finally learn how to snowboard. My boyfriend is an intermediate snowboarder. I, however, have been snowboarding a total of 2 times. Last saturday, January 5th, was my second time. Ever. So, I fell on my butt more times than I can count. Eventually, I got good enough for the green runs, so it was nice exchanging the bunny slope conveyor belts to the 4 seater lifts. There are three types of lifts in the resort: (1) bunny slope conveyor belt, (2) 2-seat lift to the green run, and (3) 4-seat lift to the blue and black diamond runs. My boyfriend has a season pass at Squaw Valley Resort, but I, being a rookie, wanted to learn how to snowboard in a beginner-friendly resort. My group arrived at about noon (technically past 12:15pm), so we were just in time to purchase half-day lift tickets, $35 opposed to the $43 whole day ticket. Super affordable! A day pass at Squaw, albeit a bigger, more challenging resort, would have cost $104. Ouch! We stayed at the resort until closing at 4:30pm, which means about 4 hours of falling, crashing, and shredding (into) the snow. If you are a beginner, Tahoe Donner is the best place to go. Best deal for beginners! Tip: If you are carrying lots of equipment (or lazy like me), the resort offers a free shuttle to and from the parking lot. Short wait and friendly service. I've worked here for two years. The ski school has always been supportive of my growth as a teacher. The teachers are all trained by awesome professionals. We take clinics and can even take certification exams. There is a real sense of family. We hang out at lunch and learn from each other. Some of the teachers have been working for Tahoe area resorts all their lives. Some reviewers have negative comments about really bad teachers. It all depends. Maybe the teacher had a large group and maybe one kid started crying and the others copied that kid. Concerning kids under 6, you really toss the dice when it comes to group lessons. They can also get pretty tired after continuous days of skiing. But of course any child over 7 should be expected to improve day to day. If you go on Snowbird, which is going to be updated this year, stay away from looker's left / skier's right. There is a little creek valley there and it seems to suck students in there. Also if you are snowboarding don't strap in right away after getting off the lift... find a nice place away from the ski lift and towers (which will all soon be relocated) before you strap in. I have to say the lift operators are pretty awesome. They'll slow down the lift for you if you're scared. It's just an example how everyone there is expecting to accommodate beginners. As a beginner you might not realize how awesome this is until you go to other places. read more

One of the best skiing experience...Brad and Shiela were extra ordinary ...and gave us the best skiing lessons during christmas weekend... It was my second time learning skiing so I am a total beginner. My dad also went in for the first time in life and both instructor made sure that he is comfortable and can have an amazing experience ...they didn't rush through anything and took us way into the countryside forest and never spoke to us rudely even though we kept on falling all the time. Shiela was with us till the end and kept telling us all the best strategies while skiing so that we don't get hurt and at the same time enjoy more and more. This resort I heard opened up recently and in my opinion it is way better than Northstar. read more

Cheap and very good for kids and first time skiers...gentle slopes for beginners. There is a restaurant and fire pit for eating and chatting :) Rentals and lessons can also be booked there as well as online There snow play area is good as well for tubing and sledding. read more

If you come here knowing what to expect, then it is perfect. We came here because we want our 2 boys ages 6 and 3 to learn how to snowboard it's their 2nd time going. Got the private lesson for 3 hours and they both had a blast and have improved. It is a perfect place to learn how to ski or snowboard. I went on a couple runs and it wasn't bad, just a quick short run down the mountain. If you're expecting long runs and challenging ones this isn't the place for that. For beginners it's perfect. We'll probably be coming here more frequently as the boys learn and improve. read more

For young kids learning for the first time, it's actually quite a mess. The weekend classes are really hard to get into. The 2 easy magic carpets are reserved for the ski classes, so if you can't get into one it isn't easy to teach a new young kid. We finally got the kids into a class, and the class for the 4 year old was a disaster. Within 20 minutes , several kids from my kid's group had to go to the bathroom or were crying. So our teacher left with them and left our kid marooned... Unclear who was his new teacher, and seemed like he was just supposed to sit on the side for half an hour because the teacher left. They also didn't have basic supplies like tissues, so one kids nose was just a mess. Overall I expected a lot more from an area supposed to be tailored for young kids and families. read more
