Tina was absolutely amazing. I have to admit, I wasn't sure what I was walking into. I initially asked the nice gentlemen at the front for 30 minutes. Tina took me back and i explained to her I had herniated discs. I showed her which area not to push too hard on, and I said a few things about exactly where and why via google translate. She understood and checked to make sure I was okay with how hard/which spots she was doing throughout the massage. She took my redirection very well if she went too close/too hard. If you have an injury just don't be nervous to explain what you need/ where to be/ where not to be/how hard. She was extremely polite and MOST OF ALL- She knew exactly where my muscles were the most tight based off what she felt. She's got a real talent for this and I cannot recommend her enough. I ended up adding 30 more minutes to receive a full hour. The price is very affordable, but make sure you're tipping these people for their time accordingly. They are legit. read more

Booked a massage for my husband and I based on the reviews and was disappointed. It wasn't the worst massage we've ever had, but it definitely wasn't the best. The owner (I presume) did not have our 6pm 90 minute massage on record. After explaining to him I received a confirmation email, he stated his son usually runs that and asked if we could wait until 6:30. We agreed but said it would be better if we could stick to the appointment I had scheduled days in advance. Fortunately, he was very accommodating and was able to get us in. The only downside was the owner came in and explained that he would start the massage, but that another person would take over. Massages are not his thing, I'll say that. It was very aggressive and fast and I did not feel relaxed or relieved. When the lady masseuse swapped in, she did a slightly better job, but still very aggressive and fast. I had to stop her from touching my face though because she basically scraped my scalp with the head massage and I was worried she was going to be just as aggressive with my face. She also was coughing and sniffling quite a bit and had to step out. After the 90 minutes was up, my husband described he had a similar experience and we agreed it was just a "so-so" experience and still wanted to tip just under 18%. Now this is where I get frustrated. The massages here are $1/minute with $4 added for a credit/debit card- very good deal. When we told the owner to add $30 total, giving $15 each to the massage therapists, he immediately said no that's too little and we should give $20 each. That's over 20% tip! And there is no way the experience warranted that type of tip. My husband was very firm about us tipping that amount and the owner then pulled out his calculator, but eventually he didn't fuss over it anymore. I very rarely get massages because I am on a fixed income, but I treated myself to just a half hour, which was 30 dollars. The lady did an ok job, but it was rote, not intuitive or custom-designed to my specific needs, although I tried to communicate about a neck area, she never went into that area that hurt. When I went to pay the $30, they added $4 if you use a credit card. The extra tip of $5 was a lot for me, but I figured it was more than 15%, and I asked her to add that. She said "NO" and wrote down "$10". Listen, Thai Chi people, CHARGE $40 for a half hour if you're not happy with $30. You just kind of ruined the whole experience for me. I loved this place. You have probably already heard that this is completely no frills. I wasn't looking for anything special, just a set of hands that could find the knots and attack! My masseuse did that. There were a few spots that were missed, but I was ok but he spent most of the time on the places that needed it without me having to explain where they were. I don't tend to tell where my knots are, I use that as a gauge to see how good the place really is. I eventually say something if they don't hit the spots but I don't go back. I've been here a few times and my favorite part is you can walk in without an appointment and they will take you. They are priced reasonably, $60 for 60 minutes. They will ask what type of pressure you like, I suggest starting with medium, because I could not handle anything beyond that. The medium pressure, feels harder than a deep tissue massage that you would get elsewhere. This massage is great for anyone suffering neck, upper back, lower back, hip pain. They really get into your muscles. I would not describe it as relaxing, but you get results. I hold all my tension in my shoulders and back, these massages help relieve that tension. I am usually sore/bruised for a few days after, but often the other pain in my shoulder, hip, back has eased. Today my masseuse even walked on my back, that was a first for me! They massage the glutes, which is much needed in my case and many others places will not. This place is not fancy, but you will get fantastic results. Be mindful, if you want a relaxing massage, you would have to be clear and ask for light pressure. I wish it was in my budget to go weekly, but for now, it's a monthly treat. read more

Warning! The Chihese male massaues harassed me to tip him 40% from the service he charged us $100! I tipped him $20 and that's 20% for his work and thanked him. My fiancé and I went on a rainy Saturday afternoon to get a couples massage which was amazing like a husband and wife team did their thing! They hit a lot of pressure points, deep tissue and massaged us from head to toe definitely felt relaxed afterwards. Only drawback was seem like they were shortstaffed and the owner had to keep answering the phone. This is going to be a long review, I have been suffering with chronic lower back pain for well over a year and in recent days it has made me walk like a cowboy from an old spaghetti western going to a gunfight. I paid a chiropractor $75 yesterday for him to try to straighten me out even though he did his best it was not his fault my back would not cooperate, I crawled out of my car paid $ 1 an hour to park not bad my eyes and walked towards the building a pleasant looking Asian lady watched me waddle up to her and I said I usually don't walk like this. After that I only said 7 words, " 90 minutes please, thank you, excellent perfect " she led me into a little room didn't care what kind of walls it had I removed clothing and in record time , she came in knelt on the table above my head and put her magic hands right on the epicenter of the pain in my lower back and proceeded to remove every tension in my body. The muscles in my back were like overwound rubber bands going in and about an inch shorter and walking funny but she Unwound them like you would unwind the string of a yo-yo. I went in walking like Yosemite Sam and walked out like Clint Eastwood Standing tall, if I wasn't married I'd ask this woman to marry me. Her name is Cici I'm not sure how it's spelled but if you get the chance to ask for her you won't be disappointed. After she assessed my back she said " walk on back " that's when I said excellent after a few minutes she asked if I was okay I said perfect I did not say another word until I said thank you. I could feel the stress and energy leaving my body through my fingertips and Toes even the top of my head, after wasting a lot of money on doctors injections, chiropractors and physical therapy and suffering the whole time I got more relief and satisfaction from 7 words not counting all the thank yous. I will most definitely be coming back to Cici and I'm telling my brother and sisters and anyone else I know this is the place to go for a really good back massage. I've been going here for years, but I have to say I won't be going back again after today's visit. The last two times I went, my massage therapist aggressively haggled with me over the tip. I usually tip $10 on a $50 massage, and the therapist gave me a hard time the last two times. It really ruined the relaxation I got from the massage to have to haggle over a tip. On top of that, the usual $50 massage suddenly became $60 when I wasn't tipping what she wanted. I'd rather go somewhere where I pay more and don't have to deal with that. read more

THE ONLY REASON IM GIVING ONE STAR IS BECAUSE I CANT LEAVE IT BLANK‼‼ Went here last night... the guy at the front desk upon entering seemed very friendly. He told my friend and I that the wait would be 7 mins no problem. So I go into the room my massage therapist comes in... she starts kneading me through the covers, then starts the massage I not only could feel her nails but also hear her breathing heavily. Their was no pattern in her massage no depth she didn't ask me about the pressure. She just kept rubbing me up and down. I was waiting for people to jump out saying that I was being punked. It was the worst massage I ever had to pay for in my entire life. I kept waiting for the punchline and trying to remain positive, it never came. I asked her how much longer, and told her to just stop. I went down stairs and explained my experience to the guy at the front desk who understood me perfectly clear upon entering this establishment, however, was now looking at me as if I was speaking a foreign language that he didn't understand. I was calm although boiling inside because I was looking forward to this massage all day on my day off. He didn't apologize... nothing. My friend came out he said his massage was wonderful, I didn't even tell him about my experience because I didn't want to ruin it for him. My friend paid for the both of us and he tipped. The man at the front desk (while smiling) said that he gave him a discount I looked at the receipt, that was a lie. Massages are $50 for 60 mins. My friend tipped $20. Are bill was $120. There is no way in the entire universe this lady could have any experience in massages!! When I entered this establishment, I thought I would be receiving my massage from a nice looking Chinese woman. She took me into a spartan room and had me lay on the massage table. Once my face was down and the lights were dimmed, she must have silently taken off her Chinese lady suit and transformed into dreaded street fighter, E. Honda. Yes, best kept secret in the Roxborough/Manayunk area! Discovered this place about 2 years ago and it's so good, they expanded. The hours are convenient (10-10 pm daily) and they have a frequent user card - which, after you have been there once becomes necessary as you will find excuses to indulge. I think it's 10 massages gets you a free one. Plus, I dare you to find a better deal at $1 a minute whilst not in the mall. Also, it's less the more time you get - $50 for 60 minutes. Wow! The Asian staff is friendly, professional and accomodating. Walk-ins encouraged. The atmosphere is not fancy, but relaxing. The only thing that could keep people away is that it's only semi-private. That is, the rooms are divided only by rice-paper screens. I actually have great laughs at the things I have heard on the other side, though (all G-rated). I think hot rocks are complimentary if you get an hour massage - you can request them (and I recommend). And definitely tell them how hard you want it - because some of those 90 pound Asian chicks are deceiving and will tear you up. Oh, and the only other thing is the Manayunk parking bites - make sure to watch your time at the meters if you don't park in the lot. A PPA ticket could ruin anyone's euphoric massage. I've gone to this massage center many times over the last 5 or 6 years. Most of the time the massages are really good but once in a while I will get a dud which is why I'm not giving 5 stars. I went yesterday and had an absolutely amazing massage from Cici! (Ceecee? not sure how to spell but there is a picture of her here on yelp). I've also had other excellent massages before and I believe her name was Nancy. However, like I said there have been a couple of times when I went and it was disappointing. In my opinion here are the pros/cons of this place: PROS: -little to no wait time usually you can just walk right in and start immediately -some of the massage therapists are VERY good you can tell they know what they are doing, are intuitive, and are experienced in body work and have nice strong hands -it's cheap! A dollar a minute is a great deal you can't find almost anywhere else. They also do a $50 for 60 minute deal which I did yesterday and it was awesome! -good location in the heart of manayunk -usually friendly customer service although the language barrier can be confusing at times CONS: -this is not a spa experience. Do not walk in expecting candles, beautiful decorations, and aromatherapy. It's not bad, there is soft lighting and music playing, but there's also just a cloth curtain separating you and the person next to you! -Some of the massage therapists aren't very good and you can tell as soon as they lay their hands on you. I've had some really bad massages here that hurt my body and not the kind of pain that I like from a massage. Most of them are great and really get into the deep tissue and knots- but I've had one woman press on my bones and it felt bad. -This place could definitely use a deep cleaning and maybe a new paint job! Overall I enjoy my experiences here and I will keep coming back. I would recommend asking for Cici or Nancy who are both excellent. I was chopped, poked, prodded, squeezed and then shocked when my masseuse somehow quietly landed on my back end with her knees for a rub down from a different angle. I walked out of my session with my masscarra smeared, my hair a wreck and a dreamy look in my eyes. I am not and will not spend money on a spa. I've been coming here for years and decided to bring a friend who had just moved to Manayunk. Before my experience on Saturday, I would've rated them 4 or 5 stars. My first issue was that my massage therapist was also doubling as the front desk clerk; she kept stopping my massage to greet new customers. For the first time in years, I did not get the normally great, complete massage I'm used to. Her coming and going was very distracting and annoying. The second issue occured when it was time to pay and tip. Anyone who frequents this place knows that a 60-minute massage is always discounted to $50. My massage therapist/front desk clerk was adamant that she did not want to give me change for a $20 bill when I asked for a $5 back (I normally tip between $10-$15 for an hour). In fact, she and another girl laughed at my friend and I when we asked for change...because they had given us both a "discount". I will seriously have to think twice about visiting this place again. If I do, I will be sure to have correct change in advance so as to not be swindled out of $20 again. Shame on you Tai Chi Center, you have really disappointed me! read more

Saw the stellar reviews and had to check this place out after a long semester of toting my laptop and books around all day. The Tai Chi Center is spartan-looking, but it is clean and they had peppermint candies on the check-in desk. I popped one in my mouth and was led back through a few doors and into a wide room. I will say this place is nicer than a lot of the massage spots in NYC where it is just one big room, no screens, no dividers...yeah. There are individual rooms created by fabric dividers and there is dim light and nice soft Chinese music playing. Do expect to strip down (derrière out and everything), you won't get the full effect otherwise. The employees do not speak a ton of English but after feeling your muscles, they can pretty much pinpoint what you need. Being a petite person means I can't hand the crazy hard pressure that most people want and I was pleased that my masseuse used just the right amount of firmness. She thoroughly kneaded my back, moved on to shiatsu, and finished with an absolutely blissful hot stone rubdown. Next time I go, I'm doing the full hour. What a fantastic business. read more

I needed a massage real bad, so I thought I would walk down to the Tai Chi center on Main Street. The ambiance was calming, and the place looked clean. The massage was pretty good. There was a lot more rubbing than deep finger massaging, and my ass was fully exposed a little longer than I would have liked, but it was worth the price. I've considered expanding my loan package for school to accommodate a weekly massage from the Chop Chop place. *Appropriately named by my friend and classmate, Kristin L, who introduced me to the place. They're open 10-10 every day. EVERY. DAY. Even holidays. You go in, tell them how long you want a massage, sit down and someone will come get you. You follow them back, confirm your time, take off your clothes, get under the towel and then have a great massage. It's about a buck a minute, until you get past 30 mins (28$) and 45 mins (40 - i think) and then 60 mins (something less than 60 - I forget). It's incredible. They ask you if you want soft, medium or hard. And if you think you're badass and say "hard" they don't eff around. Be prepared to hold back your winces. One time i had the hot stone thing, oh man, probably the greatest thing ever. TRY IT! Oh and one time one of the girls totally got up on my back and walked around on her knees! So crazy! They have a frequent flyer type card you can have them fill out so you can get your Xth massage free. They're going to cash only. So get some $$ (and extra for a hefty tip, cos you'll love it) and head over to Main St. for a relaxing hour (or half). Sorta nervous about posting this out to the whole yelp community, cos I love going there and having no wait time, but I know so many of you will benefit from this gem in Manayunk. read more

Make sure to request the hot stones if you're getting the hour-long or more. Also, if you don't know Mandarin, probably best to convey your specifications first to the owner, as the masseuses' English can be rudimentary. The owner is a very effusive man, and despite not having seen me for months, he remembered who I am, and seemed genuinely pleased to see me. Very dissapointed. I have been here a number of times in the past, and have a good deal of experience with chinese accupressure and chi flow. No one could compare to the healing and energy freeing abilities of my dearly departed dr sun, but at least this was a place where i could get some of what i used to experience...had i gotten any semblance of a reflexology session that i requested i would have been pleased. What i ended up with was frustration...i had to get up and walk out after half an hour of trying to explain that what the woman was doing was not reflexology and there was not one pressure point touched. I went so far as to point to the pressure points that she should be hitting to try to explain what i was looking for on my arm hand face and head and tried a few times, but just got more soft generalized rubbing...absolutely nothing to do with chinese medicine. I hope that this was isolated to one massuese and that the rest of staff isn't going downhill like this. I left more stressed out and frustrated than i arrived. If the owner wants to reach out to me and offer up some sort of appology for the unprofessional and untrained massage i had to walk out on, and suggest one of their staff that actually has a good knowledge of chinese medicine i might entertain trying again since there are virtually no options in the suburbs when it comes to real chinese accupressure massage. You just have to be ready to feel a bit awkward at times. You will be brought into a large room that is broken up into smaller rooms with rice paper walls and open ceiling. Don't expect to have anything explained to you so strip down and climb under the beach towel face down (I awkwardly remained face up and caused quite the surprise to my masseuse). No frills, bells, or whistles that comes with a fancy spa; all you get are the basics simple and clean. Doesn't matter since the massage is what you're there for anyway. They start off with a good pressured Swedish massage, before they go deep tissue. And acupressure. And reflexology. And hot stone massage!?! Had I read the brochure, it would've been expected, but not knowing made it a nice surprise. Massages like these usually require individualized purchase, yet this place bundled it all in. 2020 has been quite a year! I ended up moving twice this year. Lots of physical movement in moving, Pandemic and quarantined brought a lot of unwanted stress and pain. I've have had many fantastic massages here, and sometimes darn good ones, &can't say that I've had any bad. But it's really a crapshoot who you're gonna get and how they are going to address your body, your aches, tenderbits, etc. There are privacy curtains in rooms of six or so. If there are other clients you can hear them moan, or direct or such, but usually it is quiet. Maybe one other person, who you can't see and vise versa is on another table. They have hot stones which are used in various ways by the various body-workers and they will give you a hot towel cleaning before you go. And water (no cucumber). The same (non invasive) background music has been on loop for years and years. And it's a good deal, And there is a bar And a coffee shop right across the street so you can relax more, or rewire!!
