After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Bless Ya Soul Soulfood Restaurant in Roanoke, Virginia, is the perfect example. Located off Williamson Road, this restaurant has a relaxed and warm atmosphere, a menu with soul comfort food, and it's owned and operated by a friendly couple. As soon as I entered the door, I was warmly greeted and welcomed by the couple. Was asked to be seated where I felt comfortable at, and was given a copy of their simple but colorful and well-designed menu. They also had a sign up with their Daily Specials and Sides. While looking at their menu I enjoyed reading their slogan "Food for ya soul," and the fact that they mention there that they're open to menu suggestions. I ended up ordering Onion Rings as appetizer and Fried Porkchop with Mac N Cheese as my side. The main course also came with a grilled Texas Toast. The size of the Porkshop was humongous. It was breaded and fried, and served over an aluminum foil inside a clamshell disposable container. I had some problems cutting it because even though it was big, it had a few bones inside which I could not see because they were covered up with the breading. I mentioned this to them but they told me that their customers like to see bones in their porkchops. The Mac N Cheese tasted good but the macaroni pasta was a bit crunched and mixed with the blog of melted cheese. The Texas Toast tasted delicious by the way they had toasted it on the grill. The Onion Rings were not evenly round nor evenly battered and some of the rings were broken into pieces, but the taste was what mattered. After finishing my food I felt full, after all this is how comfort food should leave you feeling. Let's support this young couple I as they eagerly attempt to bring a taste soul into our lives and by doing so even reach our souls.

It's a small spot I almost missed while parking to go ro another establishment but decided to check it out since I love soul food. . I don't think it's suitable to dine in because it is so compact and the bar seating area is where they keep their personal items. One of the tables is being used to hold the specials of the day. There are two high seat tables. I tried sitting on it but the seats were not comfortable. The place itself is not large enough to accommodate a walker or wheelchair so any one with one might consider takeout instead. It has a small and limited menu. I was expecting standard soul food but the only a few items on it. The sides are standard and the pork chop is about there is for a standard soul food restaurant. I was hoping for some real soul fried chicken or cornbread. Service was good. Food took about 20 minutes so be sure to allot for time or call in advance. I wasn't happy about the long wait but the pork chop was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. One of the best I've ever had. Surprisingly a very nice gentleman paid for my meal. I had no idea and I wish I could have thanked him. It has been a rough day so his kindness went a long way with me. I will come back if in the area. I think the food quality should bring business once the word is out. I just hope the small space can accommodate for people wanting to dine in.

I always order the chicken tenders and baked spaghetti with two dinner rolls--and it's consistently delicious every time. Prices vary depending on what you get. For my meal and my brother's, it came to about $42. That's a bit pricey compared to other local options, but I'm willing to pay it since K&W is unique to Roanoke and holds a lot of nostalgia for me. The staff serving the food were incredibly friendly, and the servers were great as well. The only downside--and the reason for my 4/5 rating--is that the restrooms were pretty dirty. Otherwise, it's a place I'll keep coming back to whenever I'm in town.

The waitresses were very attentive and was ready to bring you anything else you may have needed. Old school interior, very spacious, Nostalgic if you will... give this place a try if you want to avoid the crazy crowds and mass feeding frenzy of the more contemporary buffet restaurants in the area.

After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Bernard's Gastropub & Eatery in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Bernard's was born out of the love of two culinary aficionados turned professionals that in someway have managed to create a restaurant with an environment that transmits this intimate love to the hearts of their customers through the attention to detail in its extraordinary customer service and amazing culinary masterpieces. Today, I felt like dining at this restaurant, which I admire for its consistency in always far exceeding my high expectations of what a fine-dining restaurant should be all about. Not knowing if they would have a table for me at this late time on a Saturday early evening, I drove in my pearl white Lexus to the nearest private parking lot and gave them a call to inquire as if they could give me a reservation for the next ten minutes. A gentleman, who later I found out was named Matthew, and would be my server, answered the phone with a very polite and welcoming voice; answering my question of what was the special dish of the day and to come on down, that my reservation was assured. As soon as I arrived to the small, very elegant foyer in front of the Host's station, he came out to greet me and instantly recognized who I was. My only request was that he give me a low table because at my age seating at a high table was a bit uncomfortable. He went back to see what he could find and ended setting me up with what I consider one of the best tables of the house, and I was so appreciative of his last minute accommodation. The menu was already setup on my table. He poured water from a special bottle into my water glass and asked if I wanted something else to drink. I asked for a Mocktail and since he also was a bartender, he prepared me one of the best mocktails I've ever had. To dine, I started out with their Mussels Carbonara appetizer, which came in a bacon parmesan cream sauce that was simply amazing, and served with toast points. As my main entrée I had the Dinner Special of the Night, the Seafood Trio. It had a delicious, giant size crab cake in the middle, scallops, and shrimps, with parmesan risotto sautéed heirloom tomato, spinach, and nice size asparagus, with a burre blanc sauce. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the high-quality of their food and magnificent ambiance of the place. Everything was so delicious that only one word could ever describe them: priceless! For dessert I had their very famous Butterscotch Banana Pudding, which the chef makes at the moment ordered. It looked spectacular and tasted amazingly delicious: a culinary work of art. What a great way for the Gran Finale of an extraordinary dining experience!

For the food, everything I've had has been a 10/10. My go to is a half order of the biscuits and gravy! It is always so flavorful, the biscuits are giant and fluffy. The gravy is seasoned perfectly. My second go to, as well as my girlfriend's is the hot honey fried chicken biscuit. Portion wise that thing is hugeee, most of the items are so they are absolutely worth what you pay! The chicken is so tender and crispy, breading is amazingly seasoned as well. This paired with the jezebel sauce is heaven on earth. I cannot express how much I love this place, their food is wonderful, their biscuits are massive, and their service is great. Only issue I've ever had was my delivery order never showing up (not their fault but the delivery drivers) and they immediately comped and replaced my meal. 100% recommend.

This was where we were supposed to meet for the last class in one of my Graduate School courses. Yet after inquiring some more, I discovered that "Watering Hole" is a slang for a bar, pub, or other social gathering spot where people go to drink and socialize. And The Watering Hole in Roanoke, Virginia, is the perfect example. Located in Market Square North, a shopping center with a mix of retail and restaurants options, plus ample parking, in the Hollins area of Williamson Road, The Watering Hole Bar and Grill was established in 2010 as a gathering spot to meet with friends and enjoy comfort food with bar drinks, spending the time chatting and at times listening to live music in this rustic clubby space. If you explore their website first, the emphasis on its food could be deceiving. I arrived at the place on a weekend evening expecting to find the restaurant full and yet it was the bar that was full with baby boomer age customers drinking and enjoying chatting with each other. There was only one table with a family with two daughters having dinner. I looked around for a Host table with someone to take you to be seated at your table, but there was no one to be found. So I went and asked the husband of the only full table, and he told me that the server who is mostly at the bar had told them to seat at any table, and they were waiting for her to bring them the menu and take their order. So after hearing this, and still not seeing anyone showing up to greet me, I went and sat at a table. The decor of the place were some antique items decorating the walls. Up front it had a small open stage which later I found it was used sometimes for live music performances, Karaoke, or for a DJ to play music. In the back there were two pool tables. Which after a while, the DJ and the person who arrived with him to help setup, were the ones playing pool. A friendly young lady finally showed up and greeted me when she saw me, asking what I wanted to drink. When asked for non-alcoholic drinks, no mention of Mocktails, only that they had Pepsi products. I ordered a Dr Pepper, which she brought after some time with the menu. After studying the menu and waiting her to come back, another lady came to take my order with a smile. I ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp as appetizer and the Chicken Platter with a salad and fries as the two sides. Only one option of salad dressing was presented to me. When the food finally arrived, the shrimps were extremely small and not too fresh. The two chicken breasts were skinny and dry inside, and not plumpy and juicy inside as I'm used to having in my favorite Bars and Grills. After I finished eating I just asked for the bill and decided to have dessert elsewhere. I really wished that the food would have been better because the place was very cozy, though unorganized, and the servers were very friendly, and if you read the owner's message in their website, they have an excellent idea for a restaurant of this type. Where they are weak is in the execution.
