My husband and I decided on Taj Mahal based on their advertising of a full bar since we wanted a few drinks with dinner. DENIED!! No bar! There is a bar!...a BIG and BEAUTIFUL bar; however, it's not stocked with anything but Budweiser and Miller Lite...WTF! False advertising should get you a 1 but the food was decent, although not the best I've ever had and our waiter, who was the only wait staff in a full restaurant, was running his butt off and didn't do too bad of a job. This Thanksgiving we decided to change it up. Instead of Pilgrim food we would eat Indian food. It was a very good decision. The favorite at the table was the lamb kabob; spicy lamb sausage served fajita style on a hot cast iron platter with onions and peppers. The kabobs are great with the garlic naan (flatbread with garlic and butter). We also had the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Masala; chicken or lamb in a rich and creamy sauce served with rice. We chose spice level 3 but I could have gone spicier (6 is the hottest). We all enjoyed our meals. My 80+ year old parents couldn't stop talking about it. I really enjoy the food here. At night, I usually go with friends, one of whom is from India. He orders, and I generally love everything we get. They will tailor the spice to your taste, so don't think everything is spicy. The lunch buffet is always fresh and tasty. It's inexpensive but the food is excellent. This was my first time experiencing Indian food, so I can't do much in comparison to traditional Indian cuisines. However, the food was very delicious, not too spicy or hot, but they were full of flavor. We ate from the food bar, so I don't quite remember any of the names, but nearly everything we tried was really good and quite flavorful. I hadn't read the reviews before I went, so I wasn't expecting anything of the service, but our waiter consistently returned to check on us, refill drinks, make sure we were enjoying our meal. He did seem a little nervous, but that may be explained by their service-related reviews. The atmosphere was a little bland, but the service was good and the food was fantastic. Had the Lamb Marsala my wife said mild not too spicy and it came without any garlic or ginger flavor like menu said it had in it. The cheese nann bread was ok but didn't seem like it was freshly made bread and the cheese ball dessert didn't have cheese filling it was like eating a dessert at a poor house, I don't know what they are thinking serving that in the USA! Went to dinner and ordered chicken tikka masala. The chicken was cooked well but the tomato curry was nothing spectacular. It was so so. Mind it I am from the capital city if India and know what the real Indian chicken tikka tastes like. At the end the service was sloppy. When I moved to Evansville from the east coast, I was glad to see that the city had several Indian restaurants. Taj Mahal has since become my favorite for its excellent food, good service, and pleasing atmosphere. Indian dishes tend to be very spicy, but Taj Mahal gives patrons the ability to select how hot their food will be on a scale one to six. From my experience, all of their food is good, but I tend to stick with the chicken dishes because they seem to retain the most flavor. In addition, I always make sure to place an order for garlic naan-- a tasty south Asian flat bread-- to round out the meal. Taj Mahal has a full bar that includes several Indian beers. The crowds are generally modest and the service is prompt. The one time I had to wait to pay my bill, it was because the restaurant was getting ready to close and the waiter rewarded me with a $5 coupon for my next visit. Not many restaurants would do that. If you are new to Indian food, the lunch buffet is a good way to sample the restaurant's offerings and figure out what tastes are most appealing to you. Taj Mahal is a good Indian restaurant and a great find for Evansville. I make sure to eat there at least once a month. read more

This was the worst experience I have had in a long time!!! A brown roach crawled out on the counter of the buffet food counter. As if that wasn't enough the manager argued that I did not see a roach and my 9 year old son had to be 10 so he was charged the adult price. Yes I know... I Should have just walked out! Beware!!! The Taj Mahal in Evansville IN has terrible service and you share your dining with roach infestation! Yuck!!!! I used to eat here quite often before moving away a few years ago. Been back twice since back in town and will never go back. Despite the rich and varied spices that characterize good Indian cuisine the only flavor you get at this place is huge oversalting. There is no hint of mustard ginger or vinegar in the vindaloo just salt. Even the korma - the korma for chrissake - is not a smooth mix of butter and garlic and garam masala just salted like Five Guys fries. I suppose if like many locals this is your only Indian exposure you could be forgiven for thinking it's supposed to be like that but trust me it surely is not. I so badly want to like this restaurant but I just can't. The building is really nice, well located, big open layout. Friendly atmosphere. The only negative about the premises is that there is junk strewn all around the outside of the restrooms. Like the leftover box from their "Open" sign and building equipment that looks like it's been there a long time but no renovations are taking place that I could see. They didn't serve Sprite or Sierra Mist. Only Coke or Mountain Dew :-/ My wife and daughter ended up with just water to drink. The food was a mixed bag. The pakora are all served just as is, dry, and in desperate need of something else like a sauce or even a lettuce leaf to make it more interesting. My wife ordered chicken korma because she loves the raisins and a mild creamy sauce. I ordered a lamb masala and as expected it's described in the menu as a tomato onion ginger sauce and I ordered it spicy hot. Our dishes were clearly mixed up. Mine came with lamb, perfect amount of heat but with a creamy sauce literally like eating heavy cream in texture. The korma (which should be creamy) came out with the consistency I was expecting for my masala and with a distinctive tomato taste (but mild and full of raisins) The staff advised us that there was no mix up but agreed to remake the korma the replacement of which arrived steaming hot, creamy as expected but now with no raisins or cashews (as advertised) but instead with a sprinkling of almonds. When we asked about the missing raisins we were greeted with a polite smile and giggle and that was it. No raisins. Overall the main courses tasted good but feels like we were served whatever sauce was leftover from the lunch buffet in the hope we didn't really know what we were ordering. The kingfisher beer was awesome though!! If you just want a "curry" taste and don't care about authentic Indian, then eat here. But avoid the fried foods, they are really blah. read more

Rivals most Indian cuisine in Nashville. Prices about right. Portions ample but not huge. Came with basmati rice. 5% off for cash!!! Hmmmm... Everything was very good. Highly recommended. The restaurant has a warm ambience and they have a really cool, massive oak bar with a high gloss finish and strings of tacky multi-colored flashing Christmas lights. Seem to have a lot of imported beers. The only down side was the blaring, high-volume Indian soprano. Plan on returning for a sit down and a few IPAs. Will bring some Frank Sinatra. read more

Being of Indian background kinda makes this review a bit more.... "Authentic" lets say. We eat here, a lot because it really is the best North indian food in Evansville. Now, here is why. The food has real taste, not some bland version of Punjabi food, and it doesnt have to be spicy to be tasty. my tip for you is if you like garlic - get the garlic naan. And if you like chicken try a better alternative of cottage cheese (paneer) and like spinach - get Saag Paneer - but ADD onions and bell peppers!! That's Gourmet Indian for you!
