    Butter Chicken and Aloo Mutter
    Jenny T.

My partner and I were looking for Indian food in Fredrick and stumbled upon this place. We came here for dinner on a Thursday night around 7 and the staff were attentive and quick. When we walked in, it was pretty empty except one other group dining in, but as it got later, more people trickled in. We got the butter chicken, aloo mutter, and garlic naan. The butter chicken was delicious and had a good amount of chicken thigh pieces in it. The aloo mutter had a slight kick to it that paired perfectly with the garlic naan. The portions were generous and we had half of the butter chicken and aloo mutter to take home. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu!

Was passing through so grabbed dinner here. Ordered a Taj Mahal beer, the pani puri & the lamb Vindaloo. Pani puri wasn't good, very plain tasting. The lamb Vindaloo was good and they got the spice level right that I asked for. It was Tuesday evening 8.20pm ish, they weren't busy and service was a little slow. Besides that the waiter did great getting everything I asked for. Lots of indoor seating.

I would definitely recommend you come here for a buffet option! Not the cheapest but good quality. Great array of Indian food choices. More than three dishes for vegetarians and dishes with meats. There's also really bomb pani puri. Also had dessert to wash it all down! The rice was a bit crunchy in some parts and were small amounts but all in all I enjoyed my food and ate so well. I was so so happy!! Very yummy:)

Taj Mahal is located at the old Frederick Town Mall. There's plenty of parking and the decor is Indian themed with old wooden bar at the front entrance as you walk into the building. I went during lunch, so they were serving the lunch buffet. There was not a hostess to greet us, but there was plenty of seating and it's a pretty large space. There are white table cloths and silverware prepared at each table before you arrive. The lunch buffet has a large selection of goat curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, potatoes, fried fritters, naan, yogurt and cilantro based dips. There are plenty of vegetarian options as well. Most of the dishes that I was able to try were delicious and flavorful. The owner was friendly and asked if we needed anything during our meal. Since it was a buffet, the waitress would clear our plates the few times we would get up to fix ourselves another plate, so they were attentive. It's a great place for lunch since there was not a wait time to be seated or served. I highly recommend to try Taj Mahal if you're ever in the mood for Indian food.

We came for a Saturday afternoon buffet, and were very surprised at the huge selection. The most important thing was the food!!!! Extremely diverse selections, with an incredibly talented chef.

Hey! Welcome to Frederick, Taj Mahal! We needed you! Sorry I didn't come in earlier, I was busy. Your Samosa Chat starter was great! Just the right amount of Chick Peas and Tamarind and Mint sauce. Yummy. When I ordered my Chicken Saag spicy, you certainly delivered! For me, it was on the cusp of being too hot. That's just how I like it. The non-spicy spices were very aromatic. Your Garlic Naan came out crispy and delicious. Next time I'll order two. I didn't leave room for dessert. Save me some Gulab Jamun for next time. Thanks. Sorry about the other reviewer that left you Two Stars because your INDIAN food was too SPICY, even though he admitted he had a bland pallet, yet ordered medium spicy. Weird. You deserve better than that.

We drove quite a distance to come here based on the reviews, and ended up being disappointed. The food was dry and lukewarm, and they did not honor the drink price on their website. The menu posted states drinks are included with the buffet. When asked about it, the waiter stated that was an outdated menu and gave no apologies for misrepresenting their prices. Will not be back. There are much better Indian buffets in Germantown.

We started with both cocktails and mocktails, which were a great way to kick off the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the samosas and the Lasoni Gobi (stir-fried cauliflower). Both were full of flavor and absolutely delicious. For our entrées, we had the Vegetable Biryani and the Chicken Biryani. They were beautifully presented in adorable little pots and tasted just as good as they looked. You also can't go wrong with the garlic naan--it was the perfect addition to the meal. To finish, we shared the tres leches cake, and it was amazing--the perfect sweet ending. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience, and I would love to return to try even more items on the menu.

Having brought a shoulder bag, I was offered a hook to hang it off my table. They did not offer a separate lunch menu, so I ordered a couple of things and took leftovers. Their special on manchow soup might lead one to wonder if there is such a thing as too many crispy noodles, to which my answer is no. Drowning them in the garlicky soup made for engaging eating, and on a cold day I was glad for a warm soup. This restaurant offers a dish of paneer which is toasted and placed atop of a rich sauce; I've seen versions of this dish at other modern Indian restaurants and while I don't eat a ton of paneer, this one was a winner. They had some vegan options but I could have hoped for more. A paratha was wildly flaky. They asked if I wanted drinks without having shown me a drink menu. I got plenty of food to satisfy myself.

We both agree that in terms of Indian buffet in the Maryland area, this one is the best that we have tried. I especially love their detail on which dishes are vegetarian, gluten free, or vegan. As someone who was vegetarian for more than a decade, I like it when restaurants take the effort. We definitely will keep coming back. It is a bit far from us and requires us to drive up a bit further, but we find it to be worth it. The staff here are attentive and fast and they go around like clockwork. I do not feel pressured at all to rush and I just like coming here to relax, stuff my face, and walk around.

The hara bhara appetizer was a large portion and came with chana masala. The malai kofta was fresh, tasty, hot, and a good portion for the price. The paneer makhani was also a great dish with a delicious creamy sauce and also hot and fresh. Each came with a bowl of white basmati rice. We asked for spicy and medium spicy but both were fairly UN-spicy. They told me they don't have chicken tikka masala as white meat, which is how it's supposed to be prepared, and it's only available bone-in. All of their chicken dishes are dark meat, which is not the Indian way, but they're likely catering to non-South Asians who prefer thigh or leg. The service was intermittent, and our main server disappeared and never came back after taking our order. They took some time refilling water glasses or even checking in on our needs so some improvement could be had. Restaurant clientele was about 10% South Asian, 90% not. The ambiance was pleasant. Payment system is via Toast. There is patio dining.

They offer Indian with a bit of Indo-Chinese cuisine, but I stuck with straight Indian on this occasion. Upon opening my takeout bag, I was greeted by a fully flavored channa masala, a mouthwatering naan with grated chili, and a heck of a lot of flash-fried spinach. It was plenty of food for the money, interesting, and delicious. A little on the salty side, and frankly the spinach wore on me by the end and it would have been better shared or saved for longer than I had. The description of the entree could've been clearer in that sense. The crispy garlic cauliflower wasn't exactly crispy, but it was delicious and might've been due to the delivery time. The rosemary garlic naan was incredible. I wouldn't order from here again without ordering the naan! I ordered delivery with Grubhub and it was very fast. I'm unsure about the vibes at the actual restaurant, but I'm sincerely doubting it's a sit down establishment based on other reviews and knowing the small strip mall set up where it's located.

What happened? Previous 5 Star!…read more We discovered this place midway through Covid, or very early 2021z We went with our friends, well they took us, and it became our favorite Indian cuisine in the area. The staff was incredible. Waiter was personable and brought us small free appetizer, or a desert, chai, etc. he even remembered us, and that's saying a lot. We went half a dozen times and always had outstanding food and a great time. The chef would always come out and ask how we liked our food. We'd leave a great tip and genuinely have a great experience with great food. And always getting something new for the app or desert. Every time I go I get the same dish. Chicken Vindaloo. The past two time we have went, the service has been dreadfully slow. First time I thought it was a fluke, and noticed the waiter didn't seem to know what was going on (at all) but our food was still good. No visit from anyone in the kitchen staff or friendly chatting though. Then tonight... what happened here. Is there new management? Was all the main staff out? We got in at 6:45, our friends getting there at 6:30. They asked for a booth and the waiter got flustered so said a table was fine. As we were sitting down with them the waiter came by and we asked for some water. It never came. Well it did some time later. There was a family of 4, 2, and our party of 4. Right after us was a party of 2, and 6. At 7:00 we got our water. At 7:15 we placed our order. Around 7:20 the party of 2 walked out. During this time food was trickling to the two tables ahead of us. We got the impression that the only waiter, had never waited before, had a mild language barrier, didn't know the menu, now how to use the desk computer. He came to our table twice to ask about what drinks we ordered. At around 7:40 we got our cocktails, and was one short. Glass of wine, Long Island, and a mojito. Missed the mojito, but they brought it to us as well as the second Long Island we asked for. Not sure if we got a mojito or margarita but it was fine. Long islands were in very small cups. Nothing had ice, not even the water. We received our Spinach Chaat and another app at 7:50 if I were to guess. In the past the Chaat has been incredible. Google crunchy spinach chaat and that's pretty much what we got. Tonight it was in a bowl, and completely different. It was more of a salad, with what I would describe as an Asian Rick cracker type noodle in it. It was good. But 110% different. Not what we expected. To me it didn't feel authentic and like it was premade. I'm thinking those crackers that you get from Chinese restaurants with your meal in those bags. The greasy ones. Our meals came at around 8 and again, different. Wow it's been over an hour! Our bread was moist but good. Didn't mop up any sauce though since it was so buttery. The rice, which we normally would get 1-2 large bowls for the table, we each got a small bowl, maybe 1 cup of rice if that. The rice was watery and didn't have the herbal flavor we were use to. I want to say there use to be peas in the rice. Tonight it was just rice. Mine had some clumps of rice in it, like you get from rice that's been in the fridge, had water added and then re-zapped. My vindaloo, which I was accustomed to being a lovely deep red in color, large chunks of chicken, and potatoes, was a curry orange in color. A Chick-fil-A spicy nugget had more spice. No potatoes and I counted 8 pieces of chicken. I didn't say anything as our server was so dreadfully slow. Nothing against the guy, he was very polite, apologized every time he came to the table (don't do this my friend, once is enough), but we didn't want to get stuck their longer. My wife said there was no spice In hers either. We got our to go boxes, which were the styrofoam boxes with 3 sections in it. Before they had those tin containers with plastic lids. I loaded my few spoons of rice and my Vindaloo curry contraption into the container, 99% sure it would spill in the car but my wife somehow kept it together, knowing I'd have to make some rice in the instapot for the leftovers, since they didn't give us any extra rice.... They use to just give you a full container or rice to go. We ended up leaving at 8:45. Remember we got there at 6:45. We each had one drink. And 2 refills of water. The spinach chaat had pre-made noodles(?) in it, with a salad of the rest on top. Our meals were lacking spice, and ingredients. The rice was bland and reheated. I love rice. I could live off it. This was not good rice. And it took 2 hours to have a meal that should have taken an hour. I'm not sure if this place is under new management, or what has happened. But this has happened twice now, so I'm not sure we will be going back until we hear things improve. And I hate to say that since it's 15min away from our house, and the experience gave it more then five stars before.
