Found out about this place long before I finally tried it, and ended up wishing I hadn't waited so long. I'm a big fan of East Indian foods, and I'm very picky about food generally. I have no complaints about Taj Mahal! Before eating here, my favorite was India's Rasoi in Columbia MO, which is better than even the excellent Delhi Palace in Flagstaff, AZ. Taj Mahal now holds the top spot in my roster of great East Indian restaurants, and is one of my top ten all-time favorite restaurants regardless of cuisine. We live an hour away and only eat here when we go to Springfield for other reasons, but it's so good that it would be worth driving for an hour each way even if all you do is eat and then drive home. Good food here, and a good location. They usually aren't too packed. That's about where the good stops. The servers NEVER seem very pleasant. They act like their lives are the worst and they would rather be anywhere else. They somehow got my order wrong last time I was there. From chicken Khorma to Shrimp Masala? Then, we ordered some naan to go. After about forty minutes waiting with no indication of where our food was, we left without it. There were two other couples there at the time. I have eaten here twice. Once during their buffet and once in the evening. If you like healthy spicy foods this is the place. I had their eggplant and I've never eaten where it was prepared this way. This place is fantastic! I visited on a Saturday for the lunch buffet and was very impressed with the food. There was a good selection of Indian classics, including aloo gobi, chicken tikka masala, curry chicken, butter chicken, vegetable korma, pakoras, chana masala, and probably five other items. The heat level was mild, so I think my kids will also enjoy this place. I would've preferred everything slightly spicier, but the flavors were wonderful. There were many chicken dishes and I generally prefer vegetarian, but they were delicious. The restaurant itself is extremely clean. The staff was friendly and our water glasses were filled several times during the meal. I would recommend this place to anyone who already loves Indian food and also to those who are looking for a way to try several different dishes without having to commit to one. read more

For those who are complaining about the tandori chicken not being "Indian" enough for you, I think anyone who loves and eats Indian food would much rather have one of the curry's or korma, dahl dishes. This is my most favorite restaurant in Springfield. That is really saying something, since AAA lists over 500 restaurants in this town of 150K population. Yes, Taj is #1. I will never take it back. I don't know why I like this so much. Everything there is to look at in an Indian restaurant appears to be baby food, at first glance. it must be the crack that they put in the Chicken Korma. Kidding. It must be that they serve high quality ingredients, that make everything tasty and complex. I have heard people say that they do not like to do Indian buffet. I can understand that, as I have had plenty of so-so experiences in various Indian establishments. People, just trust me on this. I especially want to speak to out-of-towners here. If you are visiting Springfield, MO, you will not ever ever think to visit this place without a local having recommended it. The establishment is in a mini-mall on the south side of town. You would think that this has to be a joke. If you are in Springfield, and you want to do lunch, I implore you to try this. Do you like vegetables? Do you like rice? Are you an adventurous eater? If the answer to all of those is, "yes" then you have no excuses. Go try Taj. Now, I see a lot of people posting reviews that compare this place to another Indian food place in town. I don't think good reviews for one place should be based on a negative experience at another place. I also don't think it's the intent of either place to be in competition with one another. It's just by circumstance that there are only two Indian food establishments in one town. I'll leave that right there. Enough said. The thing to understand about Taj Mahal, when you pay it a visit, is that this place is all about the food. They have great service, in my opinion, but it's got a family establishment feel to it. This was a planned visit. Had no intention of having the lunch buffet UNTIL we saw the buffet. Noted that mint and tamarind chutney and Naan are available on the buffet line helped the buffet decision. The staff and management are VERY friendly and VERY attentive. I have been visiting Taj Mahal for the past three and half years and frankly no one gets Indian food better than them. I have been to many Indian restaurants all over the country and very few places get the authentic Indian flavors right. The vegetable korma is one of my favorite dishes and butter chicken is top notch. After my first and probably the last visit to Zaayka, the new Indian restaurant in town, I will stick to Taj Mahal only. read more

Finally great Indian food in Springfield. I moved here from Overland Park, KS (KC area) and I had been missing my meals at India Palace (try it some time) when I saw this place as I was driving by. I tried it the very next 2 days. Dinner was really good (butter chicken) and the buffet the next day was very good. The food here is so good and the staff are so nice and never let you run out of water. That is a big deal if you order the vindaloo! Authentic and tasty, I would recommend getting one of the sampler platters first visit to try several options. The butter chicken and the vegetarian korma are both fantastic.
