Sake and cocktails are discounted and as it was a bit chilly when I ducked in, so I grabbed some hot sake and a few rolls. There's quite a few tables for the small space, and it was set spaciously. Overall the service was efficient and the food was good. I ended up with the tempura (it came with several vegetables which I ate too quickly to photograph) which paired great with the sake. When you first walk in, there's a noticeable fishy smell, but aside from that, the happy hour pricing is very reasonable drinks and bites under $10, which is hard to beat in DC. Very cute decor, large dining space, and an authentic sushi counter. Drinks: I ordered the Yuza Yakra and this drink can best be described as a great selection for lunch or brunch! It felt like a mimosa but that was because of the rich citrus taste. So satisfying and perfect summer drink. Appetizer: I ordered the spicy salmon roll as a starter and honestly, this was DELICIOUS! I could have stopped my food journey right there but I had to savor the moment and make room for more. It was fresh, well prepared, and tasty! Main dish: for my main I had the Tonkatsu, fried pork. This was AMAZING! Perfectly seasoned and well portioned. What I would say is that it wasn't evenly cooked as some pieces were dried out while others were more juicy. I went to Takara 14 for Valentine's dinner. This meant that there was a set menu, which was not a lot of food. Luckily we were able to order additional items off their regular menu. The menu consisted of only 3 courses and unfortunately the service was very lackluster. Our waitress was very nice, but this is not a big restaurant, when I was there there was only about 8 tables and the people were running around, seeming overwhelmed. The service was very slow and tbh the food was ok. I feel like there are better sushi options in DC. It was literally love at first bite. 10/10 would order again. It was a chilly day so I decided to order ramen. No regrets, but I would not order the Kuro Ramen again. Pretty dead, only 3 other parties. I was greeted at sat by the window, nice to have a little distraction watching people walk by. Started with a side salad and the tempura. The salad was good kind of sparse on the salad for the price. The tempura was good, the bottom of the tempura was soggy and ok. The lychee geshia was delicious, fruity and crispy. A little sweet for my taste but very refreshing. I got the Peral roll and two pieces of fatty salmon. The salmon was good, nothing crazy to write home about. The pieces seemed a little small personally. The pearl roll was good, flavor was there but again, the roll itself just seemed small to me. I was very excited to try this, as they have a $150 Omakase experience upstairs. Thought I'd try this casual place first. I had a 9:00 reservation on Saturday. First sign was one other table of 2 in the whole place. I ordered the Lychee Geisha hold the cranberry; it tasted like cherry 7-Up and the lychee fruit on the toothpick was so old that it was falling apart. See my photo. I then had seaweed salad and miso soup. I've had much better seaweed salad. Miso was fine. Then came the two rolls of sushi. Spicy Salmon and Opal. Beyond basic - ok. I had better sushi at Hamilton last Saturday. Then came the best part- at 9:45, my female server comes over with the bill when I had a full plate of sushi. She said, "Sorry. We must close our credit cards now. You need to sign. But no rush!" What? Thank goodness I didn't spend $150 on omakase. Bad when I'm writing this review as I sit here! Takara 14 served us a variety of Japanese treasures for a very enjoyable meal. "Takara" is precious or treasure in Japanese and it is located on a busy stretch of 14th Street. You'll go up a flight of steep stairs to reach the restaurant. It is small, like a jewel box, with small tables and they seated us by the window, decorated with pink blossoms. They are two special omakase menus, but we went for a la carte. Check in in Yelp for a discount coupon. We shared Brussels sprouts with shaved bonito flakes. The heat from the sprouts made the bonito dance. Crisp, perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth, the sprouts were the best I've had (I've had plenty). The tempura and chicken karaage (squid was sold out) were hot and crisp, tasty. I had Saba nigiri and these were like melt-in-your-mouth tender, never had Saba so nicely fresh like that. My broiled mackerel came with miso soup and several small dishes of pickles--plum, cucumber, kelp--as well as a bowl of rice with furikake. As for the fish--Holy Mackerel!--broiled to perfection, nice flavor, no bones--simply prepared and exactly right (can't say perfection again). My companions enjoyed their dishes too - Chirashi filled with colorful and fresh seafood, gleaming little jewels, Chicken Katsu Curry - generous portion of crispy chicken with little vegs in curry and Salmon Don with generous and fresh chunks of fish atop rice. Hayden, our server, did a nice job keeping the dishes coming at a timely pace, was very gracious and efficient. All the dishes were well executed and at a very high quality. Hands down the best sushi I have had in the city. Takara 14 has been on my list for a while and finally decided to go after the H st. festival. We were greeted and sat quickly. Our server was very nice and suggested her favorite items. I decided on the Lady of Kyoto for my cocktail and it was delicious. Not too sweet and not too strong. We ordered the Chicken Karaage 5/5 we all loved it. The chicken was seasoned and fried well. The umami mayo and slaw were the perfect add. I ordered my favorite Nigiri's - Yellowtail and Scallop. I thoroughly enjoyed both 5/5. They were top quality. My group also had the Tuna Tartare which they all loved. Even though it was busy, I got my drinks fairly quickly. They were out of quite a few standard options though (ie sprite, ginger ale, etc.). I ordered the lychee geisha and it was good; it was a tiny bit too sweet for me. The service was great. Even though they were busy, they made sure to provide us everything we needed and quickly. We ordered shrimp tempura rolls and an eggplant roll. I never have an eggplant roll before so i def. enjoyed that. Best Sushi I have had in about forever. I have quit easting sushi to be honest to a lot of bad experiences. But it was a walkable option for our Hotel and she wanted Sushi. For rolls, we got the peridot, spicy tuna tempura, pearl, diamond, spicy crunchy roll with angelfish, and the citrine. We also ordered an entree of tonkatsu. The ambiance of this place is also super cool, there are big windows adorned with a cherry blossom design. The seating is very very small and intimate (make reservations!). This was my first visit to Takara 14 and the experience was excellent. Despite me making a reservation for the next day rather than the day of, the staff were able to seat us very quickly. Both the hostess and the staff were friendly and efficient throughout, and the ambiance was lovely as well. My companion and I were quick to decide on our shared meal: we ordered the Pyrite Roll, the Yellowtail Scallion roll, and the Chicken Karaage. We appreciated that the roll choices were interesting and had good variety. Our order came quite quickly once we'd placed it; this promptness did not negate the freshness. The weakest of the three dishes we ordered was the Yellowtail Scallion roll. The simplest of the three, this dish was not very scallion-forward but tasted fresh and was satisfying. This roll was deserving of a 4/5, as was the Karaage. The menu should mention if a dish is drizzled with the sauce it's served with, though I firmly believe that dishes like should not be drizzled with sauce if there's an option to put that sauce on the side. That being said, the chicken tasted great and was fried nicely. The standout item was the Pyrite Roll, which was a salmon roll with cucumber topped with eel tempura. The staff is incredibly nice and even offered us one of their employee parking spots because the parking was a bit tough. We got 2 complimentary round of tequila shots and a desert. We went at a slow time but nonetheless the severs were very helpful knowledgable about the menu and very kind! I was craving sushi and I found myself at Takara 14 after a quick Yelp search and a short walk. I walked up the colorful entry staircase and entered a tranquil dining room with brightly colored seats and flower-adorned windows. A server escorted me to a comfy seat by the window where I had a prime view of 14th Street. He explained that happy hour had been extended to Saturday afternoons from 12-5 starting that day. I therefore had the option of ordering from the happy hour or regular menu. I ordered a Caribbean Kyoto cocktail as well as tuna and vegetable rolls from the happy hour menu. The Caribbean Kyoto consisted of a nice blend of rum, coconut rumchata, orange juice, sour mix, orange bitter, and cherry juice. It was a gorgeous drink with just the right level of sweetness. Not heavy on the alcohol at all! The tuna and vegetable rolls were fresh and tasty, albeit much tinier than expected. I ended up ordering an onyx roll (shrimp tempura, black peppered seared blue fin tuna, avocado, green onion, sweet soy) from the regular menu and it was delicious. I would skip the happy hour rolls next time and go right to the onyx roll! There were only two other tables of patrons during the entire time I was here.
