About a year ago we went to dinner at Takeya for my nephew's seventh birthday. There were eight of us total. I made a call ahead reservation several days in advance, since Takeya is always busy on the weekends. Our whole party arrived on time (you have to have your party in full to be sat) and we're told we'd have to wait. Again, because it was a Friday we expected to wait regardless of our call ahead. An hour and a half later (mind you, we had three kids with us), we actually heard the manager tell the hostess to seat a party of eleven before us because they were his friends! My sister and I actually HEARD him say this to the hostess. She said, "we have parties who have been waiting an hour and a half." He then said, literally said, "I don't care, Joe [the name of the party] is my friend." I approached the hostess, who apologized and explained that he is the manager and she has to listen to him (his name is Dominico "Dom" Bui). I then approached him. His excuse was that the party of eleven called ahead, well so did we! Then he claimed they had been waiting awhile, well so had we! (We saw them walk in about 10 minutes before this incident.) We ended up walking out, as we didn't so much as receive an apology for this behavior. Fortunately, another hibachi restaurant down the street, Tokyo, agreed to hold us a table and we were able to walk right in. In fact, they even bought us a round of saki and appetizers because they felt bad for our poor treatment at Takeya! This may seem like an irrelevant incident a year later, but get this. My nephew's eighth birthday was yesterday. He asked to go to hibachi and my sister and brother-in-law decided to give Takeya another chance. The exact same thing happened last night. My brother-in-law approached Dom who gave him a string of total crap excuses, just like he did me a year ago and refused to try to make it right. As my brother-in-law was walking out (again, for the second year in a row) Junior, a server at Takeya, chased them out, promised great service and promised to get them seated in a timely fashion. While this was unbelievably kind of him, it's not Junior's job to do things like that. It's Dom's job as the general manager. Dom has failed Takeya and my nephew two years in a row. I will absolutely never return. My heart goes out to the great staff members like the hostess from a year ago and to Junior, who did the right thing to provide quality customer service, but they're managed by a scumbag who is probably letting way worse things than skipped parties on a wait list happen. read more

Went here for Father's Day without a reservation. We chose to eat at the sushi bar and became very worried when we first arrived, they were very busy. It took awhile for someone to come to the bar once seated, but after a few minutes Niko came to the rescue. This the first place my now husband took me on are first dinner date. That is before they moved. He told me the winner buys the looser dinner when we played a game of pool. I of corse lost the game of pool. First of all I love sushi and my favorite is spicy tuna. When we go we usually sit at the sushi bar. My husband isn't into sushi so will order from the teppanyaki menu, but will have a few bites of sushi. The decor is contemperary and the atmoshere is romantic at the sushi area. Traveling from North Carolina and came here with family, maybe I'm used to southern hospitality but the waiter felt aggressive and also took sake shots with other costumers at our table which felt unprofessional. The cook was friendly but seemed less experienced than those I've encountered in my home state...food was mediocre at best and after the $100+ bill came out and my cousin paid with cash change was never brought. We waited 15 minutes in a closed restaurant to end up admitting defeat and tipping $30 rather than approach the waiter who was already counting his receipts. We walked past the entire staff and management to leave with no one looking up or acknowledging our presence. Will not return and neither will my family that lives locally. read more

The worst service I have ever experience!!! To top it off it was Father's Day!! Understand longer than usual waiting and hostess was great! But downhill quickly from there once we were seated! It took close to 15 minutes before our server first came over to take our drink orders then another 15 minutes to get non alcoholic drinks then another wait for the bar drinks. Then another wait to place our food orders. Was also told a 45 minute wait for sushi! The server never smiled and got our order incorrect as the cook had to go back to the kitchen on 3 different occasions to get additional items. We had to ask for refills ourselves. Then as our food is being prepared the one thing we had to pass the time automatically shit off. The TVs with the NBA playoff game with less than 5 minutes left on the clock. We were told it automatically shuts off at 1020. The restaurant closes at 10 and we arrived before 8 but still no dinner as of yet. Then the bill arrives and we're told that the gratuity is included which we knew. And I jokingly said we don't tip and the server responded with and in a very disrespectful manner that he didnt care because he gets paid anyway. We talked to the manager to get her to remove the tip and her excise was they are tired as she rolled her eyes as well. Then the server we believed uttered shut up and started cursing which my husband heard and then spoke to the manager about. I have never not tipped as my daughter serves and I most often tip more than 20% but I am really disheartened to have to not leave any tip but wit's service that horrible I could not leave any more of my money in an establishment that clearly demonstrated they could care less about my business. Spotlessly clean place with upscale decor. You sit down and don't have to wait that long for your food - it's really quick. Soup is tasty, ginger salad dressing is great. Takeout expletive wasn't great. Being put on hold was about 5 minutes of what sounded like someone walking around. Staff is friendly. But when you order 3 of the same filet meals with different temperatures, it would be helpful to put which one is medium, medium rare, etc on the box. Went there with a Daytona friend. Very cool looking building with a gorgeous interior. Took a couple minutes to be seated. A little longer to get drinks and have order taken. My hubbie ordered the takeya specialm which is lobster, shrimp, and steak. (37 ish) I ordered the steak and calamari (22 ish). It comes with a soup and salad appetizer. You watch a little show from the chef, which is always fun. My 5 year old was entertained. Dining in has always been great here. However I just got takeout hibachi which comes with soup, salad, and dinner. They did not give me the soup and said they don't do to go soup because it's "too much of a hassle" and if a customer would "like to bring in their own container" they can get soup. I asked so is this is the same price as if I was dining in, including soup, he said yes, yet I got no soup and I was paying for it. So I went to my car and luckily had a cup asked them if I could put it in a to go cup and put my soup in the cup I had, because I paid for it, and it was mentioned on the phone when the host said "soup and salad ok?" at least they did that. read more

My rating is as it pertains to Sushi Bar. It might be rated higher as a Japanese Steak House. A friend told me to go there for sushi. I am sorry I did. I went on a Wed night in January. Seaweed Salad and Miso Soup were great and I thought I had a find. They were almost out of every fish. Very small portions in the case. I asked about toro -- "we only have that during race week". No uni. I literally wrapped up and went to finish dinner at Steak 'n Shake with a yummy cheeseburger. Serious. A pet peeve of mine: not being able to order from the sushi chef. You must do the paper order and give it to a waitress. Another pet peeve: they don't hand you what is made; they hold all unti the full order is ready. Amateurs. I went there for my birthday last week for the first time ever. Big mistake. I normally got to Tokyo. I was an ad for a free birthday dinner. I thought that was cool. Well it was only if you have 6 or more people.. Well that's okay. We order and when they pulled out the portions I was so surprised. They are so small. You pay more than the other places and you get less food. Sushi was over priced. And even though we told the waitress it was my birthday she brought no desert and didn't sing to me! Have been going to Takeya since moving to Ormond Beach over 6 years ago and have always had an excellent experience. Service is impeccable, friendly, efficient and they really appreciate your business. Food is always top quality, served hot and with wonderful presentation. Went there to celebrate a birthday. The food was just average, very salty and nothing special. Loads of rice. Our main issue was with how noisy the interior was with all hard surfaces, loads of kids and gongs being beaten to announce birthdays. We thought a Japanese decor would be more Zen-like. If you want to have a conversation with your dinner companions, don't go here. The waitress was the most annoying of all. She seemed to think we were there to listen to her talk (rapidly and loudly). Since we were only 2 people and a family with six were seated after next, we no longer existed. The building is unique and the decor is elegant and artistic. They give free dinner on your birthday with a party of six so lots of loud gong banging and singing. I like Japanese food... a lot, and there's nothing like a good Japanese place that serves good Chirashi. The sushi was pretty fresh, obviously not grade A, but very good. In addition, they give conch. This is slightly rare in the US, but I guess since it's known to that region, that might be the case. At $20 I think it's priced very well with a nice big portion. He gives you the option of having it in a traditional Chirashi box or a plate. The plate definitely looks prettier but to each their own. read more

Being a loyal to Kobe Japanese in Orlando, I wasn't to easily convinced that I wanted to give Takeya a try. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the place looked futuristic; though I was walking into a club down in Miami. Once seated at the hibachi station, I went straight for the sake menu. I was bummed to see what a poor selection of drinks; ended up going with the peach sake which was ok. The hibachi cook was professional and cooked everything to perfection. The rice had to be the best part of the meal; added the white sauce on top. Overall our visit was pleasant and nothing too crazy for prices. I will probably be back and give Takeya another visit on a special occasion. P.S. I overheard someone say the sushi isn't great. Hibachi is the way to go! read more

I love this place before went there but man I have no regrets. First off the atmosphere was amazing very Asian type and it fit the food very well. Second the servers and chefs they were amazing the chef was very funny and involved and the servers were great and on time. And thirdly the food, the food was amazing I could eat that day and night for the rest of my life and the fact that I got a gigantic portion so I am able to eat this through the week. I would say our experience here was just fair. We called ahead for a table of 6 for the hibachi grill and still had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated on a Sunday night. Our waitress was very nice but pretty clueless. Our hibachi guy was even more clueless. It seemed to take forever for him to come out and even longer to cook our food. We also ordered a Sushi "beginner" plate, which was on the menu as an appetizer, but it actually didn't come until our meal was nearly over. And our waitress apparently mistook our order, as we didn't get what we wanted on the sushi plate, but her excuse was "We need to change that on the menu." I was personally appalled to see that they made their fried rice with nothing but a pile of frozen peas, carrots and green beans. My husband got the filet and it was very tender and delicious. Otherwise the decor is very modern and the architecture of the building is interesting. But they have this wall of water in the lobby that every kid wants to touch, and does, and then we see the sign that says the water isn't safe. I have never been so disrespected or embarrassed like this at a restaurant in my entire life. The chef was amazing and the food was ok but the waiter was absolutely abhorrent and rude. To begin with he completely forgot our 2 appetizers. We overlooked that and asked him to take it off the bill. He replied with a snarky unapologetic apology. Later. When the to-go boxes were brought to us I asked for 1 additional white sauce to go. The waiter gave me a small empty container and said to take home what was left of the sauce I had been dipping in. I didn't really like that idea so I asked for a fresh one. Apparently that was too much for this guy and he exclaimed " it's not a big fucking deal". What came next was partially my fault because I sorta lost it a bit and repeated his profanity. After that he continued but I chose to disengage.
