A little browsing in the Young Adult Lit section.

I haven't been to the location on Main; however, this satellite location fits in very nicely with the Elmwood aesthetic. I could sit inside Talking Leaves (or Cafe Aroma, which is connected) to read and browse for hours. The store caters to bookworms, and offers neat editions of classics, cute gift options that extend beyond the Moleskine notebooks traditionally found in chain bookshops, and plenty of other excellent products. The store is fairly small and often seems cramped if there are more than a few people browsing for titles. Shelving labels can be confusing or easy to miss. Unlike other reviewers, I have never really had issues with the staff, but I have noticed that they are often not extremely personable. The concept behind the bookstore is nice - I much prefer shopping at independent stores, rather than chains à la Barnes & Noble - however, there are many small details that the store neglects to address that detract from a shopping experience.

The Elmwood location is smaller, but has all the charm and excitement of the main location.

Westside Stories is the type of bookstore that you can't help but keep returning to, because it…read moretruly does deliver on those "stumbling upon a gem" moments, with the added bonus of crazy affordable prices for used books that are on the whole in great shape. They have a wide variety of genres, with a truly amazing volume of books fit into their modest shop. My favorite sections to peruse are their literature section (great way to fill out your home library with the classics at an affordable price) and a fun section towards the front called something to the effect of Interesting Lives (just what it sounds like - a well curated section to find someone's story that's sure to be captivating or meaningful, perfect for those like me who avoid non-fiction but would love the right biography or memoir). The staff is friendly but leaves you to browse at your leisure, and the atmosphere is great with the stacks to the ceiling and the chill music in the background. One element that's a great added bonus is their punch card system - spend $30 on used books and get $5 towards your next used book purchase. As if the place wasn't already more affordable than most other book retailers! If you're looking for that "I'm in the movie of my life, romantically browsing the stacks with chill music playing in the background, lost in the world of books" moment, Westside Stories is your place. And, if you're looking for a specific book it's worth a quick call to see if they have it in stock - better to put the money in a local pocket, and get the book used for a great deal.

I was surprised at the good selection available at this small bookstore - I found some treasures in…read morethe sci-fi / fantasy section and have my eye on several others. They also have a nice selection of stickers and some other fun book-themed goods (mugs, candles, etc) so it's a nice place to find gifts for a book lover. This isn't a place to spend hours in but well worth a stop (especially if you are also checking out Rust Belt across the street). Pricing is decent and staff is friendly.

I'd drive 45 minutes for a book hug--and I do…read more There are a lot of reasons to love Hamburg, NY--but at the top of my list is Turn the Page Used Books, a charming little haven where the books are used, the prices are kind, and the smell of paper and stories hits you in the face like a warm, nostalgic high-five. Once upon a time, I lived just 6 minutes from this gem. Now I live 45 minutes away, and I still make the trip. Why? Because walking into this place is my version of therapy. Yes, I'm the weirdo who openly sniffs the books. No, I'm not sorry. The selection is outstanding. I won't swear they have every genre under the sun, but I will say I've never left empty-handed--and I read everything from thoughtful nonfiction to weird fiction to "why is this cover so dramatic?" suspense novels. They've also got a fantastic large print section, which makes me look like a great daughter when I stock up for my mom. (Let's ignore that I walk out with twice as many for myself.) The staff? Lovely. Friendly. Helpful. Basically your dream book club, minus the pressure to finish the book on time. If you're into books and warm vibes, you're already one of the gang. Highly recommend. Bring a tote bag. Or three.

I left with a literal armful of books today and it's probably for the best that I had set myself a time limit for browsing. The sections are clearly labeled and sorted by author. If you're treasure hunting for favorite authors, bring a list, because you will want to look for ALL of them. Bonus: easy to see pricing, and very reasonable. Plus the staff was friendly of course! (and they have a step-stool if you're short and want the books on the top shelf because of course I do.)
