While it had good flavor, I was disappointed in the spice level - I was really hoping for something spicier. The other feedback I'd give is for such a cute spot downtown Birmingham the music felt like I was at a bad wedding with a horrible DJ... definitely not what you'd expect and just felt strange to us as it didn't match the ambiance of the place itself. A late afternoon on the patio is perfection. We were wandering around Birmingham and noticed the patio was empty around 4pm on a sunny day. The manager warmly greeted us and offered us a great table. A bottle of rose later our amazing waitress (anella) offered some menu recommendations and we had apps. The octopus was amazing, tender and flavorful. The carpaccio with shaved truffled goat cheese was bursting with rich flavor. We ended up staying for dinner and they turned the heaters on. We've been long-time regulars at Talula Wine Bar and have always appreciated its elegant ambiance, excellent food, and attentive service--which made our experience on April 19th especially disappointing. Our party of four was celebrating two birthdays, and the evening began well. We enjoyed a bottle of wine, appetizers, and steak dinners at a comfortable pace, although the steaks were mediocre this time, our focus was celebrating the evening rather than complain. To our surprise while we were finishing cappuccinos and dessert, our waiter told us that we have to leave soon because the table was needed at 7:30!! No time limit was mentioned when we made the reservation--despite noting it was a special occasion--nor when we were seated. Being rushed out mid-dessert felt inhospitable and poorly handled, particularly as there appeared to be empty tables nearby. We understand the need to manage reservations, but clear communication is essential. Unfortunately, this left a lasting negative impression and took away from what should have been a memorable evening. What's even more disappointing is that I called the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager to bring this to their attention from a constructive standpoint but no one has called me back as of yet!! read more

We ordered the burrata salad to start... the pesto it's on top of is so delicious and bursting with flavor! Next we did the pasta... we added the grated truffles on top and it was such a great addition so we each ordered ANOTHER round of pasta! The porterhouse was served medium rare which is perfect for our taste... if it's not mooing still then we don't want it (just kidding). The fries are honestly the best fried potato I've had. We got an Italian lemon cake for dessert and it was served with blueberries. The best lemon cake ever! So moist, nice cream in the middle and the blueberries top it off! We celebrated our 1 year anniversary and coincidentally our wedding cake was a lemon cake with custard and berries in the middle, so it was a great way to end the evening! We had a yummy meal where we bought a bunch of plates and shared it all! Our server was attentive and brought both still and sparkling water which was a nice touch. We sat outdoors so I can't speak on the interior of the restaurant but the patio was perfect for us to enjoy the great weather! Like I said in the photo, I am still DREAMING of the burrata salad. It was creamy and flavorful and just perfect! I wanted to take an order to go and just might have if I wasn't so full lol. Definitely a must-try!! There are so many delicious options on the menu and from the looks of it, it's a rotating seasonal menu which means the ingredients are fresh and delicious! I made my reservation through Opentable and put notes that I wanted to sit somewhere quieter for a work social meeting. (Needed to talk about a wedding project I was working on). ANNNNNDDDD They sat me right next to the kitchen, closest to the bar. Granted the restaurant was a full house on a Wednesday evening so it was loud. Even if I didn't have planning in mind, I felt like I had to shout just to talk. Irritating at first, but a bottle of wine in, I became more lax. When I choose restaurants like Tallulah, I go because I know they will have good food which means a great experience. But I really and truly didn't appreciate my waiter stopping by my table to let his presence known as often as he did. His hand was waving all around my face when he was describing the specials and wine. Each time he stopped by, he overstayed after interrupting. This was even AFTER I personally said I was here to meet with my clients for the first time. I would love for Tallulah to change up how they announce the specials. I like to read the specials to think about how the flavor profiles would work and see what kind of wine I would like to pair my food with. Hearing a waiter shout through the chaos, not understanding how much things cost without repetition seems to take the class out of the experience. I also had to bring up my plates to the SA because the plates were overcrowded and the dining pace was removed from the equation. Overall the food was great. MY GOD was the scallops deliciously prepared. But the service? The service needed help on all accounts. From the host reading the reservation notes, to the waiter learning how to read the table to the SA/waiter/EXPO seeing how guests react after their entrees are delivered. I will be back again for the food on perhaps a more social setting but the FOH logistics needs some work for reservations similar to mine. read more

For appetizers, the mushroom special stole the show with its rich flavors and enticing aroma. Each bite was a burst of earthy goodness, but i wish it was a larger portion. The burrata salad was a delightful blend of creamy cheese, vibrant tomatoes, and peppery arugula. While perfectly balanced, I found myself longing for more lettuce, especially with the freshness of the arugula making it a standout. We also ordered the Cesar salad, which was very nontraditional. It had nice sweet notes from the strawberries highly recommend. Moving on to the main courses, the halibut mushroom in parchment paper impressed with its moist, tender texture and well-balanced seasoning. However, I couldn't help but feel that it lacked a complementary starch element to round out the dish. The whole branzino was a testament to freshness, it was delicate and devoid of any unpleasant fishiness. The addition of lemon provided a welcomed brightness, adding depth to each bite. While the spicy orecchiette had promise, it fell short of expectations in terms of heat. Nevertheless, its flavors were pleasant, albeit lacking the fiery kick I had anticipated. As for the Brussels sprouts, they boasted a flavorful profile, but their texture left something to be desired; a crispier exterior would have elevated the dish. Overall this is one of the best restaurant in the area. The restaurant is very well decorated. The staff was very kind and respectful. Cozy place in downtown Troy. A small but diverse menu with what appear to be seasonal offerings. Few vegetarian options, but our waiter was very accommodating. As a counterpoint to the usual eye-rolling or "Well, we have some pasta..." he offered a very good choice. The kitchen was very accommodating and put together a very good risotto with vegetables. It was tasty, filling, and a welcome departure from usual choices in restaurants that don't cater to vegetarians. Rant over :) Tallulah has an exceptional wine list. Highly recommend for a date or ladies night! The steak was amazing; my husband is an excellent cook and grills the perfect steaks, so we often don't order steaks out because they are never as good and 3x as expensive - but this steak was phenomenal and so worth it. The mushroom ravioli with truffle goat cheese and truffle oil was fantastic as well. I think my favorite may have been the burrata salad! We were happy with everything we ordered. I also highly recommend the Sancerre! A delicious wine (although if you don't want to spend $20/glass do yourself a favor and grab a bottle from Total Wine!). Terrible communication and service skills. Called about a reservation and they transferred me. The person who picked up just goes were fully committed and hung up. Though ok. At the exact time I wanted a reservation I walk by and see a completely empty patio. I made a comment and she said patio is first come first serve. 4-ish years later so time to update this review - I finally came here for a sit-down meal with my boyfriend and some Yelp friends tonight, for restaurant week. We had a reservation for 7pm, and were not seated until 7:30pm. This wasn't the restaurant's fault - the people who had been seated at 4:30pm and 5pm didn't leave until 7:30pm. However, they apologized profusely for it and also sent over a complimentary charcuterie board, which was nice of them. I ordered the kale salad, the steak frites, and the sorbet trio. The salad was tasty and had dried cranberries in it; however, I took a sip of my boyfriend's butternut squash soup and I liked that a little better than the salad. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium rare and it was practically moo-ing at me ... the inside of it was very red (aka rare). I probably should have asked for it to be cooked a little longer (and the waiter did ask if I wanted that, later, but I had already eaten 2/3 of it) but I didn't. It had a nice char on the top and also some sort of sauce, but other than that was a little bland; it could have used more salt. The frites were standard but came with a nice aioli, as well as ketchup (I'm not a ketchup eater). For dessert, half of us ordered the namelaka, which came served in a wine glass, and the rest of us ordered the sorbet. The sorbet was light and refreshing, and came in cactus pear (interesting!), mango, and pomegranate champagne flavors. The pomegrante champagne was melting fast by the time we received it. I liked the namelaka better, but I was trying to be good tonight and avoid dairy, hence why I ordered the sorbet; the namelaka was very chocolate-y and rich. Service was good here and I never had to ask for my water to be refilled, as well. Overall I'd give Tallulah maybe 3 or 3.5 stars this time around. I liked all the food but I can't say there was anything I LOVED. The restaurant is very cute and small and has a nice vibe, so I wouldn't mind returning, although it probably would have to be during restaurant week, as the prices are definitely "Birmingham prices" otherwise. read more

I've heard good things about this place for a while now, and recently got the opportunity to dine there with friends who live within walking distance. I had the house salad (very good, but basic), and the Lamb Ragu Pappardelle, featuring house-made pasta, poached egg, and parmigiano reggiano. It was excellent. My wife had the Branzino, served with charred zucchini, romesco, cilantro, capers, and gremolata (parsley, garlic and lemon zest). It was also nicely done. Our table-mates had the Lamb Chop, served with chickpea veloute, roasted marble potato, and crispy mint. They said it was excellent. Despite the place being very crowded (reservations are recommended), the service was attentive and friendly. Our waiter was well-prepared to answer all questions regarding the dishes. I would note that the tables are pretty close together (my interior photo was a stock photo pulled off of the web because of that fact). With a glass of wine, an appetizer and an entree, one should expect to spend $70. - $100. per pOverall a great experience. There is also a dining area out front outside. read more

The first time I tried Tallulah was several years ago and it has definitely improved. The menu is great, service is great, and food is pretty good. I actually went Friday and Saturday last weekend. On Friday I ordered the octopus and lamb ragu. My boyfriend had the brisket. We got the cheesecake for dessert. The octopus was phenomenal. My lamb ragu was pretty good, but the pasta was definitely overcooked. I had a bite of the brisket and didn't want anymore. There wasn't any flavor-- not good. The cheesecake was super yummy. On Saturday we came back (mostly for the octopus lol). We got the octopus again, a village salad, and I ordered the cacio e pepe pasta this time and my boyfriend got the seafood risotto. We ordered the cheesecake again. The octopus was even better on this day, they added more toppings. The village salad was also really good, but also impossible to mess up. I really liked how fresh all of the ingredients were. My pasta was overcooked again. The flavor was good, but I just don't like overcooked pasta and I would expect it to be al dente at a nice restaurant like this. My boyfriend really enjoyed the risotto, although it was very heavy. I tried it and I thought it was okay. The cheesecake was really good again. Both days we got a bottle of rose for a great price. Both servers were phenomenal. On Friday we had Lucia, she's great and such a sweetheart. On Saturday we actually had the sommelier and he was phenomenal too. Would definitely return.
