Nestled away in the heart of Bluegrass horse country, this is a classic gem. Defined by elegant and stylish classicalism, yet not overbearing, This place has an air of sophistication without pretension. The grounds are beautiful and expansive, stretched out under a big beautiful sky. Parking is ample. I attended with my wife and my son and his wife. We came to see a friend perform live jazz. We did a wine tasting. I was disappointed that the tasting only consisted of three offerings. It seemed a little shy for the price point. After the tasting, we settled on Afterglow, a very sweet wine. The four of us enjoyed our purchase while we sat at a picnic table in the courtyard and enjoyed the jazz. The wine prices themselves were very reasonable and the selection was robust. This proved to be a great place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. We will be back. This place gets five stars from me. (Still wish a tasting was four or five offerings instead of three.) read more

Had the pleasure of stopping by Talon Winery today during our trip through Kentucky and thought I'd give a quick recap for my fellow yelpers. The grounds are undeniably beautiful. The scenery, atmosphere, and overall property create a relaxing environment that feels very "Kentucky wine country." The staff was also incredibly friendly, welcoming, and wonderful with families and kids. The gift shop and tasting space itself functionally was not laid out in a way that made the experience especially easy or comfortable to enjoy. For those of you interested in tastings, there is nowhere comfortable to sit during the tasting process, unless you want to trade into plastic cups and head outside. This unintentionally created a rushed feeling, even though the staff themselves never pressured us. As for the wines, I tried the Cabernet Sauvignon, Equestrian Series, and Crimson Cabernet. I personally tend to lean towards drier, more robust wines, these felt fairly lackluster overall and lacked the depth and balance I personally look for in a wine that can either stand confidently on its own or pair beautifully with food. A few of the sweeter wines others in my group sampled came across far more grape-forward than expected and reminded me more of juice than a refined wine experience. (My overall impression was they paired more with $10 bottles than the prices that were asked) While the staff was clearly well-intentioned and friendly, the overall tasting experience lacked some of the seriousness, polish, and professionalism that you would expect from a true leader in the wine space. We had to request that glasses be emptied and cleaned between tastings, water was never offered between pours, and some of the finer details that elevate a winery experience simply felt overlooked. That said, this place has a lot of potential. Between the scenery, atmosphere, and welcoming team, I could absolutely see why Talon Winery would become a favorite spot for locals or visitors looking for a casual afternoon outing. However, for those looking for a polished, elevated "Napa-style" wine experience, this may not quite be the home run I had hoped it would be. read more

Nice tasting experience. We stopped in on Black Friday for a fun girls day out and enjoyed our time together. For $12 you get to taste 3 wines. They have a broad selection of red & white ranging from dry to dessert wines. Upon completion of our tasting, we took one of our purchases and enjoyed it in one of the sitting rooms. It was a casual sitting area with displays of merchandise available for purchase. I purchased 2 bottles of wine to go, but I was disappointed to discover that one of the bottles was not what I wanted. I purchased mango but was given peach. I should've checked the bag before leaving. Overall a nice day out. I would like to go back when the weather is warmer. read more

This is a great winery within minutes outside of Lexington. There's live music on the weekends and it's always free! You can bring a picnic lunch and drinks along (no alcohol). They have very limited snacks to offer so I suggest bringing your own They offer tastings as well as selling their wine by the glass & bottle. Barbara and her crew were wonderful! She sure knows a lot about the house and seems very passionate about it The bartenders are very helpful when suggesting which wines of theirs you would like, if you have a favorite of your own The grounds and house are beautiful! We did not take a tour this time but did go through the bottom of the house because we did a tasting (they have a nice bar inside for the tasting). There is also a very nice pavilion next to the house that can be rented out for a special occasion or just a family get together they also offer wedding packages Dogs are welcome, as well as kids - there is a big lawn for them to run around on (the kids not the dogs)! It's a really great place to hang, relax and chill with some great scenery, a bottle of wine and good music! We will definitely be back read more

This place is amazing. It's on lush green fields it feels like you are in the country but only a few miles from town. The wine tasting rooms are set in a beautiful house and it also has a lot of merchandise for sale. We have visited this place a few times, though this is the first time I've written a review. It is always very busy! They had music outside and lots of seating for folks to sit and enjoy. They also have a pavilion that was open. We chose to do a tasting inside. They had a waitlist for tastings, despite the fact there was no one in the tasting room when we arrived. We killed time shopping- they have a wide selection of novelty and gift items that we enjoyed. You get to choose the wines you want to try. They were all pretty good, though none of them great enough to take a bottle home. This is a great location if you want to hang out, listen to music, and nosh on some food (you can bring your own). read more

It was the day of the wedding and I wanted to check out a couple more locations while we were in Kentucky. We stopped at this winery at 10 AM. It was a nice long drive up a drive way to the winery. The winery is in a cute small farm house. I was hoping that the winery was in the amazing looking red barn, but it was in the old farmhouse. The farmhouse is nice and elegant inside. The cost is $6 per person for 6 tastings, and since they weren't busy it was $1 extra for anything else you wanted to sample. This place had very dry wine. If I were to guess, everything was either 0.0 or 0.1% RS in the wine. It didn't have a wonderful fuzzy taste to all of the wines. I tried both red and white and event had a blackberry that was listed sweet, but tasted extremely dry. We did have a glass of wine. But this wasn't my favorite stop of wineries. The lady who helped us out was friendly and helpful. The wine itself wasn't that great. It was okay. I like dry wine, but not that dry. You need to taste something in my opinion. I also found it a little pricey, two glasses of wine, 2 tastings and it was $30 some dollars. I noticed the wine was a bit pricey as well. read more

We were invited to a wedding here and wanted to try the wines before the big day. My wife and I were taken aback from the beautiful drive into the vineyard and observed another wedding taking place. There were plenty of people there for a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and for good reason. The bartenders were very friendly and educational in their wine offerings. We got 2 tastings apiece, which amounted to 6 wines each. After tasting wines from California and Georgia, I am pleased to say that Kentucky has a nice gem in the wine world here. My favorites were the current equestrian series red blend (something the winemaker adjusts annually) for the dryer selection and the diamond sweet white wine (from the diamond grape, something new to me). If you are looking for a great way to spend an afternoon catching up with friends or a venue for your next event, consider Talon to be your place! read more

Took a random stop to this winery during a trip to Lexington and it was well worth the visit. The area is absolutely beautiful! Fields and fields of land and a vineyard to walk through. The staff is friendly and it feels quaint and homey. We were not as to have a tasting due to the corona but I purchased two bottles of wine. One to take home and one to taste. I was able to try the coyote red but I was not a fan. It had a weird after taste and it is a mix of white and red wines. The Afterglow wasn't bad, to sweet for me but it had a good flavors for this hot summer day. Never heard of this place but glad I was able to try it. They even have a location in Shelbyville which is closer to louisville. I wouldn't mind going to that location and checking it out as well once everything has calmed down. read more

It was not our intention to visit Talon. I had been several times to the location in Shelbyville, and while the wine is decent the service there has been wanting. But the other winery we wanted to visit, the same distance from our original location, didn't open for more than another hour, and we needed to keep moving with our day. Fortunately, the vineyard is loads better than the Shelbyville location. This is more what you expect when you think 'winery'. It has large grounds, is picturesque, lovely. The only problem is that the sign for the winery is really only easily visible when coming from one direction...which was not the direction we were coming from. So we drove past the driveway up to the winery before having to turn around, because that sign was only see-able from the direction we were driving *after* we passed the entrance. The house that has the tastings also has most of the first floor set up as a gift store. Kitschy, punny, tchotchkes surrounded by their wine offerings. You are greeted just inside at the counter and they made sure they had enough space at the tasting bar for us to start right away. There was, so we headed on back and got ready to sip. I don't love that they have different tasting options for weekdays and weekends. Weekends, I believe it is 3 tastings for $3. But weekday tastings are 6 for $5. *IF* they happen to not be terribly busy, they will allow you to do a couple extra tastings...at a dollar a pop. So if you do end up getting 6, it costs more on the weekend. I think that feels kinda scammy....but I also wanted wine. They have a good variety of wines that range from dry to very sweet. I stuck with the sweets, since only three tastings were guaranteed. The wine remains good. And the service here was miles better than at the other Talon location. We were not ignored, we got information on the wines, and some nice suggestions. If you are dead-set on visiting a Talon location, this is the better of the two. I would probably prefer to visit any number of other nearby wineries, but if someone really wanted to come here, I would be alright with it. read more

Cute place in a 1700s farmhouse that, apparently, predates Kentucky statehood. Fun fact: so does the Valley View ferry down the road (oldest continuously operating business in the state) -- which was the reason I passed by Talon. While driving down Tates Creek and it's beautiful winding turns and horse pastures, I noticed Talon and thought "oh, THAT's where this place is!" and made a note to stop by on my way back. Nearly missed it because most of the signage faces the southbound direction but, luckily, was able to turn around and check it out. Sitting on the porch and overlooking the vines was lovely. Wine was surprisingly good (surprisingly, because KY isn't exactly known as wine country). Granted, many of their grapes -- namely the varietals that can't grow here -- are sourced from Washington and aged and/or blended here, but I don't have a problem with that. I'd rather have good sourced wine than bad local juice. That said, their local varietals (traminette, vidal blanc, among others) were nicely done, and their sangria was actually well-blended instead of the cloyingly sweet version one tends to find in many regional wineries. All in all, it's a relaxing spot with good wine and a beautiful view. Well worth the weekend drive! read more

From someone who has tasted anywhere from a robust Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley to the sweet muscadine wines in Georgia, I can say this winery holds a candle in the wine world. They have very kind wine experts talk you through their wine options and the grapes grown on the property. They have a large variety of wines to offer to guests, so no matter what your taste preferences are, there is something for you. I would say they are a great stop for a fun afternoon while visiting Lexington or want a place to catch up with friends in town. We were excited to try this winery. However, upon arrival we weren't greeted nor were there any real signs to tell us what to do if we were there for a tasting. We found the tasting room. And then were told there was a wait and we needed to get on the waiting list. Went back to the start and the person was back and told us it was a 15 to 20 minute wait. We said okay and roamed around. Went in at the 1/2 mark and were told there was now a group they were taking and it would be another 15 minutes plus. An hour later..yes an hour..we got our 3 samples for $3. Everyone that came in we heard em say 15 minutes or so. The good news is the wines were great. Love the Bluegrass Blush and some that were aged in Whiskey Barrels. We enjoyed the Mango wine and the evening wine (similar to a reisling flavor). A good way to spend some time outdoors and relaxing. Plenty of social distancing. I stopped by this cute little winery almost by chance, it's on a long windy road out in the country. I Saw the sign and On a whim we stopped in to check it out. The tasting house was an actual house. The staff at the time were both pretty young and friendly. The wine (that's what it's about right..) was really nice. I tried 3 samples and bought 2 bottles to go. Very tasty for wine out of KY. The packaging is pretty sexy too. I'll definitely come back when I'm in town. Next time I'll bring a picnic - charcuterie board perhaps? read more
