Great local surf shop. Lots of hats, tank tops, tees, rash guards, surf boards, fins, etc. They are the only Kauai - only surf shop so definitely give them some love when you're on the island. Stay away from this place!!!! Unprofessional. We came to rent surf boards for our children. They rented us boards but never warned us about brown water which was dangerous on many levels. We sent our kids surfing and ranger stopped us saying it was very dangerous and the surf shop should have warned us. In comparison, we went to another dive shop and they would refuse to rent us anything saying water are dangerous all around the island. read more

I'm leaving this review to make sure the owners of Tamba Surf know about my experience, if I was dealing with an owner then the public needs to be aware of the lack of service and disrespect they should expect. While vacationing on Kauai with my family I had been to several local surf shops looking for a bar of locally made or branded surf wax. (back story here is that I collect surf wax, I try and purchase a bar from all of the places we visit around the world). All of the local places had recommended that I go to Tamba Surf, as they have their own branded wax. I thought that would be cool as I had heard of Tamba before so I was pretty excited. On Tuesday, Oct 23rd we were finally going to be in Kapaa to do some shopping before our departure, so I was hoping to finally pick up "my souvenirs", a bar of wax, a sticker and a hat or t-shirt (my typical purchase at a surf shop). We Googled the address and while driving my wife noticed they close at 5pm. It was 5 minutes to 5pm when we noticed the closing time. We were less than a mile away and Google had our eta at 5:02pm. My wife quickly called the store, a young man answered and said that he closes right at 5pm. My wife explained the situation and also let him know that our plan was leaving at 8pm that evening so this was our last opportunity to swing by to grab the wax. He was very abrupt and rude with her on the phone saying that he had to leave at 5pm. I didn't realize he was being rude to her but I decided to talk to him thinking if he understood that I collected wax and really wanted wax from Tamba Surf he would have waited the couple extra minutes for me to arrive. I understand what I was asking for was "above and beyond his normal duties" however I would have compensated him for his efforts and I would have been leaving a rave review instead of this one. My negative review is NOT because he wouldn't stay open a few minutes late, but rather his rude behavior on the phone. We were very nice to him and honestly didn't expect him to stay but had hoped he would have been sensitive to our position. I completely understand that he may have had something very important he couldn't be late for and I would have no problem with that if he would have said so, however the young man was rude, rude to me and my wife. My wife was talking to him and he just sat there not responding until she said are you still there?? When she told him we were almost there he argued with her saying traffic was horrible and Google was never right and he wouldn't wait for us anyway. He told me he "thinks" or he was "pretty sure" they have it on their website so I should buy it there. He didn't say goodbye he just hung up. I'm all about customer service and if it is good I will always leave a fantastic review because it is important to recognize the good companies and employees out there, unfortunately I did not get the opportunity to know what kind of company Tamba Surf is beyond this young man's poor phone conversation. read more

On the surface all was fine. Easy in and out. Grabbed two surfboards for the afternoon and we were set. My buddy and I hadn't surfed since high school so you can imagine we're not exactly going nuts out in the waves. What we didn't notice was that one of the boards had extensive repair work done across the entire middle. Completely different color fiberglass, etc. Long story short, after a couple of hours I think I noticed a tiny crack, I didn't think anything of it. I'm about 175 pounds and was in 2 foot waves. Within about 30 minutes the tiny crack expands to a complete break across the deck. Naturally I got out, strapped the board to the car, went home and came into the shop the next day. To add insult to injury, not only was the one day of surf ruined, and arguably dangerous if I was out in bigger surf, but the grief they gave us was inexcusable. Sure we signed a liability waiver. Yes you got us by the balls. But honestly, the fact that you made me pay for a board that was so obviously broken before is ridiculous. Not just the rental rate, but the repairs as well. I'm sure if we had been given decent boards this would have been a five star review. Everything was business as usual, except for the part where I was rented a busted surf board. read more

Support this local store! This is actually a surfer's store, not an excuse to sell high end tourist clothing made on the mainlands, like so many so-called surf stores. This is the store actual locals frequent, and is widely respected on the island. Not just another outlet for quiksilver and other fancy stuff. (and I love my quiksilver board shorts, make no mistake...) I booked my second surf lesson through this store, with Nephy, who the owner recommended, and had a great time. We went to a nearby beach and focused on technique, which is what I wanted. I was thoroughly happy with my experience. read more

Rented a surfboard for a week from Tamba, the boards are Tamba brand boards. We were told at the time of rental that we can come in and switch the board as much as we liked!!! To play with the waves, we swapped a short board for a long board with no wait time and no problems. The women who worked the shop was extremely sweet and knowledgable, she threw in 3 bars of Tamba and sticky bumps wax and base :). The board return was painless. The shop is friendly and easy to find. Returned the board to "Meina" ex pro surfer, so if tips are needed I'm sure this shop has you covered! read more

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more local surf shop on Kauai. Located next to Kojima Store at the east (north?) end of Kapaa, Tamba is a small surf shop stocking surfboards (for rental and purchase), surfing gear, sunglasses, and, of course t-shirts, surf shorts, and tanktops. I sadly spend more time on the beach than in the water, so I'll skip the pretenses about surfboards and gear. What lured me into Tamba was the clothing. Since Tamba is Kauai-based many of the shirt designs are Kauai-centric, always appreciated when you're trying to rep your Kauai pride or at least buy a gift for someone who went to Hawaii once and stayed in Waikiki. The only downside? The girls/women's selection is sparse. As the guy working commented to me, "Girls are too picky, you could have fifty things and they still wouldn't be happy. So we just have a few things for women." Still, Tamba is the spot for guy-gifts. Surf shorts are gloriously priced under $50, t-shirts are in the $18-20 range, and if you can't find anything there, there's always the fall-back sticker. Bonus points for the Tamba guys (the owner and the guy-in-charge-when-the-owner-is-out) being super friendly and sweet. read more

Tamba is a local surf brand that has some sick shirts, hats and boards. The store itself is pretty small, but they got a little bit of everything to please everyone. My family and I picked up a hat, couple shirts and a tank. The prices aren't ridiculously expensive either. The price is comparable to skate brands back on the mainland. I'm in love with my snapback that I got from here! I would definitely be back the next time I come to Kauai! read more

Was just in the shop with my little girls and the nice lady working that day was awesome (wish I would have asked her name) she made us feel very welcome and gave the girls some stickers. Review for surf board rental. After a lame experience in Hanalei on the last trip (one epoxy short board), I decided to drive the extra miles to rent from what seems to be much more of a locals' shop. They had three sizes 6'4" and under. And long boards too, but I was looking for an actual shaped short board. Real boards with plenty of patches but they're rentals, right? Love that they threw in the rack set up for free. Will definitely return. read more

This place was super chill when I went to rent a board, 25 bucks for 24 hours, and the board was actually pretty legit.. 5'11 t64 I believe.. hit almost as well as my 5'9 Merrick.. Weekly board rental is a great deal. I was visiting Kauai for a week and wanted to rent a real board, something other than the epoxy NSPs that everyone else on the island rents. I found a 9'6" at Tamba for $90/week. The board had a lightweight glass job so the deck had pressure dings everywhere and obviously had undergone extensive ding repair in many spots. But it was watertight. More importantly, it did not look like a rental. The board worked great and surprisingly turned out to be a good noserider. The only snafu was the leash which broke at the cuff swivel. The board would have been washed up on the rocks had it not been for a friendly haole who snagged it just in time. When I brought the board back to Tamba the Hottie behind the counter insisted that the rental was "no charge" because of the broken leash. She was very apologetic and gave me a couple free stickers. I was not expecting such great customer service and it made my day. read more

We rented two boards from Tamba for over a week and went back a couple of times while we were there. Tessa was there every time and always super friendly and full of great info about local surf spots. The boards were used and repaired, but did the job and we were happy with them. When we turned everything in Tessa was there once again smiling and cheery and we chatted with her a bit. She gave us a discount just to be nice! She also gave us a bunch of cool stickers and just made a perfect end to our surf experience in Kauai. Completely recommend Tamba and ask for Tessa! read more
