This is the best surf shop on the island. The staff here could not be kinder and more helpful. The store has a great selection of items and we come every time we are visiting the north shore and will continue to do so. All this said, we also lost our car keys in the store and the staff was spending so much time in between taking good care of their customers to help us find them. I had shopped this store a few days prior, bought a sweatshirt and some jewelry. Very nice and helpful lady that checked me out. I went back on Sunday march 17, to try on some black pants. The young man put me in a dressing room, and very loudly said, 2 black pants. Which i found to be a bit obnoxious. The pants did not work out, i hung them back up and looked around some more. I walked outside to look at the sale rack, the young man watched me and then followed me back outside and questioned me about the pants. I told him that i hung them back up. He asked me to come back inside and show him where i hung them. He said that there was a lot of theft. I would think this could be handled a bit different and in a more professional way. The hyper vigilant employee could definitely use some training on how to treat customers. read more

We come every year to Kauai and make sure to visit HSC. They have wonderful, good quality clothes and suits. Really nice items to take home with you that say Kauai on them-shirts, stickers, water bottles. They don't sell the gas station items, it's higher quality things. They are very friendly. read more

My family and I came by the other week to rent surf and boogie boards, but Tucker saved us from disappointment by letting us know that the water on the North Shore was super dead that day - no waves to be ridden. He guided us in pivoting to snorkeling gear and super helpfully made sure all the masks and fins were a snug fit on everyone. We ended up snorkeling the better part of the week and the gear served us admirably - sturdy, no leaks, and we didn't have to decide in advance how many days to keep the rentals. I stumbled upon this gem in Hanalei. The cutest beachwear. Loved all of their options of great shirts with Hanalei and Kauai. Wish I would have bought more when I was there because I didn't find another surf shop in Kauai that compared. Also, awesome prices on beach rental equipment and they were very flexible about when it needed to be returned so we were able to keep it until we were done. This place is great. Everyone is ridiculously friendly. We rented surfboards from here 4 days out of our stay and their suggestions were spot on for each day. I (being the one person in the family who does not surf anymore) rented a beach chair and bought a ton of cute T-shirt's. Great place to rent snorkeling gear!! Great customer service, everyone was so helpful & patient! It was only $6 for mask and flippers. Life jacket is also complimentary if you ask for one! My friend didn't know how to swim and the lady recommended using a body board & it made the experience a lot better! *Highly recommend body board if you don't know how to swim or not a very strong swimmer. If I could rate this place zero stars, I definitely would. Upon entering, I immediately felt uncomfortable as the employees seemed to shadow my every move, even questioning me about merchandise I hadn't touched. Their behavior was blatantly disrespectful, and as a person of color, I could sense the unwelcoming atmosphere. To make matters worse, one of the employees negligently damaged my car while assisting another customer, showing no remorse or apology, even after expressing concern about potential charges from the rental company. Their nonchalant attitude, capped off with a rude gesture(middle finger), was simply unacceptable. I'd much rather take my business to the surf rental down the street. Avoid this spot if you can! If you do shop here, avoid the really short brunette with the voice. You'll know who lol read more

We've always supported HSC over all the surf shops in hanalei (although most are sister stores) but the "service" we experienced by the two guys working the morning of 10/10/20 was a major turn OFF. Long story short, the two guys working just wanted to be anywhere but there or just were too cool to work ...idk. Couldn't even say a simple "hi" or acknowledge your sole presence in the empty store just makes you feel super unwelcome. Anyway, we tried to shake off the cold shoulder vibe and attempted to shop. Husband looked at the glasses and asked the guy a simple question. One had no knowledge of the sun glasses they sell (no big deal) but the fact that he couldn't even *try* to help find what we were looking for or recommend checking their other stores maybe?! Instead, he just stood hands in his pocket shrugging responding with "not suuuureeee...." staring at the display trying to fight off a yawn. Cool...feeling super uncomfortable now we left annoyed vowing to not return (while those guys are working at least). Well next day went to their sister store across the street, Backdoor Hanalei, and behold...the glasses we were looking for! They also had good simple customer service so naturally we bought more stuff because that's just what happens. Review is solely for this experience. read more

10/31/21. INCREDIBLY POOR ATTITUDE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. I bought my daughter a bikini inside the store in the sale section. Brought it to her and it didn't fit. Went to return it and was told it is not their policy to return sale items. There were no signs saying no returns. I was not told when I bought it I could not return it. The clerk saw the receipt and who rang me up and stated, "oh Ryan has been gone and just got back so he may have forgotten to tell you." I offered to do an exchange and was refused. VERY UNCOOL. Amazing experience. Instructor (Lance) was terrific. Best instructor i saw out there. Great with kids. We all were able to stand up and surf. Patient and gave great instructions and tips that got us up and surfing. Equipment was in really great condition and they took us to a great spot where the waves were easy for beginners.
