This is my favorite coffee shop in Alexandria! I love this shop so much that I took my husband here as his first stop in Alexandria prior to meeting my parents when he was my boyfriend! Of course I chose somewhere that I felt was the best Alexandria has to offer in an atmosphere where he could enjoy a beverage and have plenty of space and privacy to relax and unwind (he is the first boyfriend I ever took to meet my parents so the pressure was real!) This shop is located in downtown Alexandria with super quirky decor, lots of seating, and several book and game options to pass the time! I also loved the hidden notes in the bookcase that gave book recommendations. I have tried several of their drinks here throughout the years. Most recently I tried one of their seasonal drinks, the reindeer chow but asked them to hold the chow to make it a cookie butter latte with oat milk (wasn't really in the mood for a chocolatey cereal chow meal in my drink but loved the concept)! I also ordered the avocado toast. The latte was perfectly balanced, yet rich and delicious! It was also served at the perfect drinkable temp. The avocado toast was THICK and the avocado and egg topping seemed fresh. It was very filling and a nice dose of healthy protein after all the holiday indulgence! I will ALWAYS come back to this coffee shop when I'm in town especially since it holds a precious memory for me. I was visiting the area and found this cute coffee/ breakfast spot in downtown Alexandria. I usually don't get a frappe but the cookies and cream frappe with coffee was really good and the right amount of sweetness. Also the berry muffin was delicious! My friend got an English coffee latte and she loved it! Overall a great place to stop by for a quick snack/ drink and also if you love board games there are a lot of games at the store to play and hang with your friends! read more

I've written an extensive review for Tamp & Grind during my last visit home, so this will be a brief update. The coffee and service is still great. We stopped in on Saturday and Sunday morning and enjoyed hot lattes and macchiatos. During the second visit I tried one of the seasonal Mardi Gras drinks - bourbon caramel to be specific. The drink was delicious. I wanted to buy a shirt of a woman looking like she was standing on business but they were sadly sold out. Anyway, enough rambling. Wow! A coffee shop with a vibe that rivals so many in New Orleans. Right down from City Hall so many Suits drop in for coffee break along with college students putting in some serious study time. I tried the brewed coffee and it was alright. The lemonade on the other hand was a standout. It tastes fresh-squeezed and not too sweet. In 100 degrees heat, I can sit in here with a lemonade and completely empty my inbox. A note on the croissants we ordered: well worth blowing off your diet for. This is a great coffee shop. Whenever I am in Alex I stop here on my way out of town. If I lived here or was staying more than one day, I would come here all the time. Located in the heart of downtown it is everything I want in a coffee shop. It is cool with a funky vibe, great staff, and great coffee. It checks all the boxes. I usually just get a cold brew and roll out but on my most recent trip, I got breakfast and ate in. If you are hungry, get yourself a frittata. They are made in-house and are excellent. Imagine egg muffins with cheese and ham and you will understand what these are. They also have siracha if you live a spicy way of life. There is not too much more to say. This is super cute community coffee shop in the heart of downtown Alexandria. Don't over look this gem ! I passed by twice before deciding to stop. I had wonderful Banana Cream Italian soda and Asiago bagel, there were so many interesting flavors to choose from to flavor your sodas and coffees and Incant wait to hear back and try the Maple flavor once fall hits the south. There are several chain coffee shops in outlying area and not much to speak of in the somewhat run down downtown area but don't let that fool you this is a vibrant coffee shop with everything a good coffee shop should have... good coffee, good service and a true feeling of community. There were tables of studying students, locals having breakfast with lots of lively conversation and a generous menu of coffee, teas, Italian sodas and breakfast and snack items such as the ever popular avocado toast to bagels, cookies and bars. I came in for a cup of coffee and saw multiple paintings from local artists on the wall for sale. After asking about them, the employees had no knowledge what was sold or how much each painting was. They then reached out to the owner and told me to call back later. Just got off of the phone and was told the last painting I had asked about the girl thought was sold and couldn't tell me for sure either way. The girl on the phone was super passive aggressive after I told her that it's very misleading that they have paintings that have already been sold but are allegedly for sale. I must say I've moved away from Alexandria and really miss back when Jeff ran the shop. It's not the same and they seem to be doing shady business nowadays. read more

The food and coffee were delicious. I ordered a bagel sandwich that came on a asiago bagel, egg, and Canadian bacon. I would recommend asking for the spread on the side as my daughter did not like the spread. The coffee was hot and fresh. The service was friendly and fast. The ambiance was excellent the restaurant was large enough for my daughter's softball team and they had board games available for while you ate and enjoyed your coffee. Total 5! The coffee is legit and they added the perfect blend of syrups to coffee and milk ratio! The store is cute and has plenty of space. I'm amazed it wasn't already packed but stop by here. Totally worth it. I should have added something to the avocado toast but I highly suggest they add bacon as an add on option. It's cheap and u can liven that thing up. Needs a little salt in the guac mix but all in all good breakfast for a early morning stop. Did I mention the staff was great? She was and made the experience a great one! read more

Great little coffee shop in downtown Alex. It has lots of character, and appears to be a space beloved by the local community. It is located in two storefronts on the corner of 4th Street and Desoto, with great views out windows on two sides. There are tables outside if one wants to be outdoors, or the interior offers a variety of seating options from cozy cubbyholes to power bars to change or operate your devices. There's lots of local items on display, ranging from art to books for sale by local authors. There is a shelf full of board games! This clearly tells me that people like to spend time here. There are also racks of books, as the sign says "to feed the mind." The coffee is top notch, and includes all the favorites. I was impressed by the fall flavors, and had to try a Carmel Apple Latte. It was as good as it sounds! They also have a selection of baked goods, including cookies, muffins, and on the day I visited (twice) apple fritters. This is one of those local places that I'm glad I found, and intend to return to whenever I'm in town. You should seek it out and try it for yourself! read more

Such a funky place. And food coffee too! We were staying at the Bentley Hotel. A block away and they don't serve breakfast. I went there to get a cup of coffee and avocado toast. Toast was wonderful; seasoned well, great bread and a hard boiled egg on top. The next morning, more good coffee and a decent chocolate croissant. Service is great and prices are good. I couldn't decide between that or the avocado toast, so next time I'll get the avocado toast, especially since she told me that the wheat toast is made there. I also had a vanilla cold brew with coconut milk. I asked for no ice, but they gave me ice anyway...oh well. I'm not the kind to ask them to redo. It was good. The layout of the place is a little funky; I almost gave my order to a fellow patron. This is a super cute and cozy coffee shop! My favorite part is that they have LOADS (50+) of different flavors that you can use to customize your drink. My go to is always a lavender latte with oat milk, which tastes great iced or hot. My one complaint though is that the non-dairy milks are expensive! It's about $.85 for the more common non-dairy milks (eg, soy) and $.95 for oat milk, so a drink ends up being around $5-6 depending on the size, and even more if you add tip (which I usually do). I can't avoid the cost though because I'm lactose intolerant :( Knocking off one star because the cost of drinks is as high as that in a big city....and this ain't a big city. Overall, it's still a place I come back to over and over because the cozy and warm atmosphere, WiFi, and outlets make it a great place to study or get work done. read more

The Tamp & Grind coffee shop is owned & operated by a super cool dude that really loves people that love coffee :) Jeff, owner & operator, has been in the area for over 25 years & can tell you a few stories ;) We were just passing thru coming from Nola. That stretch of 49 is boring as hell & I needed to find some espresso fast. I turn to my trusty yelp amigos for help finding my caffeine fix & I quickly find my way to Jeff's Tamp & Grind. We haven't stopped talking about it yet. Partly bc we picked up a jar of Mayhaw jam there & we just polished off half of it on a sourdough bread baked fresh by moi. Yummy :)' Mayhaw jam is in.freak.in.credable! Thank you Jeff for having some for purchase we LOVE it. My grandmother used to make it for me when she was still alive, but it's been years since I have had any. It brought back such bittersweet memories. The other reason we haven't stopped talking about Tamp & Grind & the super cool owner Jeff is bc he introduced us to Ristretto during our visit! He even did a shot of Ristretto with us! How cool is that?! Jeff explained to us that Ristretto is the espresso shot that is "restricted" to just the dark part. When the stream of espresso turns light they stop it there "restricting" it to just the dark espresso so it's full flavor. The Ristretto is fantastic. We loved it. I also ordered a gingerbread latte & a cappuccino for the road. They were the best coffees we have had in a long time. Having had two coffees & three shots of Ristretto we were flying high back home! And if you are so inclined, take a tour of their cool artwork, as you enjoy live musical entertainment (I really dunno how often the live music is). Maybe take a stroll out to the front sidewalk and pick up some produce at the cute little itty bitty farmers market (again, no idea how often a local farm shows up...but they have posted that info on their Facebook page). Employees are friendly and helpful. I enjoy their many latte flavors. There are cookies and other pastry things available. We stopped for a quick coffee break on a road trip and it became a mini coffee date for my wife and myself. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with bohemian and artistic touches everywhere.
