Visited their new local today, what a treat! The decor now matches the smiles and friendly greetings we got at the firmer location with a few new ones added! Their bigger kitchen has allowed them to add to their already fabulous menu and the dining area is great! Today I had the "Island Shrimp and Grits" and oh my, they were out of this world; grits were cheesy and buttery and the shrimp were prepared to perfection! I added their jerk sauce, just because I love it! Oh and a friend and I shared a side of their signature corn and today as everyday everything was too notch!! I'm already deciding what I'm gonna order on my next visit! Treat yourself to the best locally owned and authentic food in town! I was actually on my way to another restaurant when I spotted this place and noticed the sign advertising Caribbean cuisine with a twist. That alone made me pull over -- and I'm really glad I did. I ordered the Chicken Burrito, which came fully packed with shredded cheese, creamy Rasta cheese, crispy fries, red onions, fresh cilantro, and a side of zesty jerk sauce. This burrito was loaded -- seriously generous -- and the flavor was absolutely on point. The jerk sauce added just the right kick without overpowering anything. My only small complaint is that it had a bit too much cheese for my taste. Even after trying to remove some, it was still pretty cheesy. But the overall flavor held strong, and it was still very enjoyable and extremely filling. I actually got two full meals out of this one burrito, which makes it a great value. I also tried the Rasta Pasta, and just like the burrito, my one minor critique is the amount of cheese -- a little heavy for me personally ( i was able to take some of it off) . But the pasta itself was delicious, and the portion size was solid. I also had the Island Punch, it was okay. Personally I would not order it again. What really stood out, though, was the staff. They were awesome -- friendly, welcoming, and genuinely made the experience better. Honestly, even if the food hadn't been good, I'd come back because of them. The overall restaurant aesthetics were pleasing, but the food just wasn't it for me. I expected more flavor from the oxtails and can you really be a Caribbean spot without cabbage? The grits weren't good and were very dry and wasn't as favorable as I had hoped. Would I try it again yes just to see if it was just a bad or off day for them, but I'm not jumping up and now. Rating a 3 isn't due to the food or anything. The food was flavorful, cooked well, and did me justice and the punch was good as well, but capturing the Caribbean entails the food and the rhythm. It would have been nice to hear some Caribbean music playing instead. I guess I'm also just a bit of a purist when it comes to my Caribbean food, so while I enjoyed it I wouldn't necessarily think of The Royal Onions first when wanting to visit a Caribbean restaurant. I've been hearing a lot about a Caribbean inspired restaurant in Alexandria and had to check it out for myself. The location is a good one on Texas Ave with a lot of parking. You are met with a warm welcome when you walk into the restaurant. The menu is easy to follow with Caribbean cuisine with a Mexican mix. I had the jerk chicken and shrimp combination burrito and it was amazing. So full of ingredients and flavor with a homemade jerk sauce to go with it. The burrito was massive but it didn't stand a chance! This spot is definitely a hit and I encourage all to go enjoy this Caribbean treat. read more

I finally was able to stop in at the royal onion for the first time. Ive always heard great things about the place. My best friend and I went for lunch today at 11am. We started out with 2 island punch.. my first sip had me wanting to take a vacation to Jamaica. Our drinks were delicious we ended up drinking 2 each. We ordered the oxtail and grits as a combination plate with corn as an appetizer. Omg!!!!! My taste buds were jumping from all of the flavors, the oxtails were seasoned to perfection. The other tables inside were telling us how much they enjoyed that meal and smiled back at us letting us know it's their go to meal when dining here. My friend and I also ordered entrees, I ordered the tacos which had a unique flavor of the jamaica, my tacos were very tasty 2 GRILLED FLOUR SHELLS, SHREDDED CHEESE, RED ONIONS, CILANTRO, SIDE OF JERK SAUCE My friend ordered the crab cakes and pasta: PENNE PASTA, HOUSE MADE PARMESAN CHEESE SAUCE, TOPPED WITH SHREDDED CHEESE. My friend wholeheartedly enjoyed her meal. She raved about the quality and quantity of her crab cakes. We ended our meal with dessert. I ordered the OREO CHEESECAKE CHIMICHANGA, this dessert was made with perfection. My friend ordered the bread pudding, she said it was the best bread pudding she's ever eaten. The service was nice, we were welcomed in by the staff which made us feel welcomed. I got a kick out of seeing the patrons coming in and the staff knowing them by name. The owner came to the table to check on us , that's a bonus in my book. The lady cashier was super kind and knowledgeable, we appreciated her. The ambiance was real calm and pleasant. I loved the colors of the inside of the restaurant and the decor. I looked around and all the patrons appeared to be happy. I definitely recommend people to check this GEM out. Its worth it. Services is excellent It's truly Caribbean with a twist the best food I've ever eaten in Louisiana in a very long time the setting beautiful colors as they grow. Amazing flavor profile that suits the southern palate for really well seasoned food. She balances the spices so well! Nothing was so hot to catch me on fire, but the heat pleasantly bloomed while enjoying the dishes. We had the Oxtails with Pasta and the Jerk Chicken Tacos. Would order both again, with a slight favor for the Tacos. Look forward to returning to try other menu items. read more
