Ok this is a review of both the Union Station in Tampa and a cool little trip you can make to Lakeland for the afternoon. Union stations get their name because it was serving two or more companies/lines who shared a common station ( , unlike Penn stations that were proprietary to the Pennsylvania railroad). Great old building that is a little worse for wear but kept in pretty decent shape by the a non profit charity (consider a 100 dollar donation and get an engraved brick at the entry way). Tampaunionstation.com They have one museum glass display with artifacts but not much else to see other than the pictures in your mind on what the place was like in the heyday of rail. Satisfy the train nerd, explorer, novelty seeker, quirky date itch by taking the train to Lakeland for the afternoon. Book the silver star ( runs from NY to Miami) from Tampa to Winterhaven (Lakeland is the only stop until winterhaven (no ticket just to Lakeland) and a return leg winterhaven to Tampa. Cost you 28 bucks. Free parking at Union station (you can park overnight as well) . Leave Tampa around 1237 and get into Lakeland just after one pm. . Return train to tampa via Lakeland leaves at 420 (hmmm) giving you close to three hours to hit some food/cocktails, see a , cool little botanical garden the other side of mirror lake; Lots of places to eat and drink around mirror lake and downtown (1916, mojo federal bbq, Terrace hotel, swan brewing and dissent brewing) . All within ten minute walk. The seats in Amtrak coach are surprisingly large and comfortable. Rows of two on each side of the aisle. Has an outlet for electronics, seats recline and has adjustable foot rest. Very relaxing but you'll want to check out the scenery as it hits top speed of 81 mph.

Terrible, no wifi, no concessions, airport terminals are much more welcoming. Orlando has a great hotdog stand, for comparison. Here in Tampa, there's nothing

As far as train stations in America goes this one is a gem. The Gem is a bit dirtier than we might like but this historic landmark is often overlooked in downtown Tampa. Even if you're not traveling by train (there's no reason not to--- go by train!), Stop in here for a quick look. There's free parking. The historical significance and restoration of this station is enough reasons to check it out.

The desperate nature of the rails is stated

Upon walking in, you immediately feel a a flashback to a century ago, when the rails were ehat airlines are today. To make it better, the train was actually 1 minute early; very different from most Amtrak long distance routes. A creepy station initially (like all USA's nostalgic train stops. However this one truly was not being neglected like others. The efforts to maintain the Tampa Union station is clear and should continue its advocacy for a long time... at least until teleportation is available to the public! Save & keep our trains !

Ask the Community - Tampa Union Station

I want to take the train back up to New England for a couple weeks is there long term parking available at train station ? For a week or more

I am not 100% sure of how long-term parking works there. However, I did a quick search and it…

If I purchased a RT ticket to Orlando, but don't use the return half, can I get reimbursed, use it at a later date or do I lose that money paid?

As long as you haven't 'missed' a train, Amtrak is absolutely awesome about refunds. Worst case they'll give you a voucher for your next trip

But I wouldn't recommend traveling by train if you are alone, especially if the travel times are not convenient. I traveled from Tampa to Jacksonville on a Sunday evening. The train arrived about 40 minutes late, and because the station is under construction, everyone was lined up at the platform in Florida heat at that time. Not fun. Not enough seating for everyone at the platform. There are no seat reservations for standard seats on this train. If you are traveling in a group, the porters will make sure you are seated together. But if you are traveling alone, you will be at the mercy of chance, and I lost that gamble during the trip. I spent my journey uncomfortable and stressed out. There is a cafe, but I did not go there. I didn't feel comfortable leaving my work computer at my seat unattended, and I didn't want to have to heft my computer bag and purse all the way to the dining car. Thankfully, I had packed a snack, so that sustained me for the 6+ hour journey. There's wifi, but it was not great, and my phone kept switching to using the 5G. The bathroom was pretty foul. I limited my water consumption to avoid using it, but I could smell it from my seat. We started 40 minutes late, but by the time we got to Jacksonville, we were more than an hour behind schedule. That meant I got to Jacksonville after 11pm, which wasn't great as a single female traveler. My employer is headquartered in Jacksonville, and there's no direct flight from Tampa. But based on my experience, I do not think the train is an option. I will have to drive the next time.

There was a band playing...we knew this in advance and purposely got to the Centennial station prior to the start time so we could get a good spot and ride for as long as we wanted. The band was Row Jomah and will be playing at GMF this year. There was a GMF rep on board promoting the event. I'm not sure why - it seems like it's over packed every year anyway (I've been every year since inception). But I digress.... The band was awesome, the ride was so much fun, we got off when they were done and went back to James Joyce for another drink. Rode the streetcar back to downtown where our cars were and had such a great time! Need to ride the streetcar more often!!!

The Streetcar takes you from Ybor City to Tampa Downtown. It runs every 12 minutes and it was an easy way to get from Ybor to Tampa. We actually stayed about 20 minutes away but took an Uber to the train station daily once we found out how convenient it was to travel this way. I highly recommend staying outside of Tampa and using the Streetcar. My only gripe was that it was 98+ degrees daily and many of the operators of the cars did not have the AC running. I was shocked when we boarded trains where the air wasn't running.
