Tangled Roots is the best restaurant we possibly could have chosen on a Sunday after a great hike at Starved Rock. Highly recommend the malty Campfire beer if you, like me, are turned off by IPAs. When you come in though ask for Ashley. Forget the food. Forget the ambiance. Forget the beer.... it's worth coming here JUST for Ashley. She is the first rays of the dawn sun in human form. You will not be disappointed.

Absolutely LOVE Tangled Roots! I went here to celebrate my friend's 40th birthday and I'm so glad she chose this place! We got the mozzarella appetizer and it was fresh with perfectly seasoned and crunchy breading. The vodka sauce that was paired with it was fantastic. My friend ordered the shrimp salad and really enjoyed it. I ordered the fish and chips and was super satisfied. The fish was fresh and the homemade tartar sauce was delicious! They gave my friend a complimentary birthday cookie skillet. I tried it and was in sweet heaven! The cookie was hot and topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel. A nice sweet treat and awesome that it was on the house for my friend's special birthday! Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere! I would definitely reccomend this place and will be back for sure!!

We had a very enjoyable time, and they have a great rewards program. If you're going to starved rock, this is only about 15 minutes or less away from most of the outdoor hiking areas. Well worth the short travel. The beer selection is excellent and they have many very good house beers. I had the chicken pot pie special. Best to make reservations on busier weekends, but there is a bar where you can grab a drink for the wait or make your way up the street to do a little shopping until your table is ready. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive, and very patient when we asked about the rewards program. For sure give Tangled Roots a try and I think you will not be disappointed.

    Beer flight.

Went out of our way to stop here due to good yelp reviews, on our trip south. It wasn't worth the time to travel from the interstate. The beers all had a strange metallic aftertaste. We also got the hummus, which was drowning in lemon flavoring, which ruined it. Pretzels were ok. The veggies that accompany the hummus were good too. The service was mediocre, however they were nice.

    Cheers!

Amazing food, service and ambiance! So fresh and yummy! Had the flight of beers, favorite is the Cider! Turkey burger with side salad. Appetizers were the pimento cheese dip and cauliflower florets!! All were so delicious.

    Pork Fries were amazing!

Margherita flatbread with a Munich Helles

My dog and I hiked over ten miles in Starved Rock SP. The patio is dog friendly so I stopped in here for a Belgian witbier and then a Helles, which goes so well with the flatbread . My margherita flatbread was very tasty and the beers were spot on. The only annoying thing was the loud through traffic through this scenic and historic town.

Eat and drink in the ambiance of their very own brewing copper kettles!

The ambiance is spectacular is this small town. Exceptional service and phenomenal food. On top of all of that, a very wide variety of beers for any craft beer or beer lover. If you're in the area , this a must stop!

    Great Belgian wit beer

We did a 9 mile hike at Starved Rock and decided to wind down at this nearby shop. The brewery is much larger than I anticipated. Found street parking easily right in front. Our dog was with us from hiking so I asked for a table outside as far away as possible from another table that had a dog. They were able to accommodate without issue. They even offer water bowls for animals. As usual, I probably over ordered. Got both types of pretzels and fish and chips. My gf got a burger. Skip the salted pretzel. I highly recommend the everything spice. It's garlicky. The fish and chips was very good but I couldn't finish it. They were still good reheated next day! We had a couple of drinks. Cider menu wasn't extensive but at least I found something to sip. Service was great. We were able to take our time without feeling rushed. Food might have taken a little longer than most restaurants, but we were in zero rush and preferred it that day. Unisex restrooms. Two annoying things were... water slowly dripping from somewhere above our table area. It was so hot so it didn't get anything wet, but we got at least one hit our food and most of the rest on my gf's head. Also, sadly, they didn't have smaller sizes for their brew shirts, just large tees.

Such a shame to see this closed. We had a good time here enjoying a couple flights of beer and some food. Cheers!

Ask the Community - Tangled Roots Brewing Company

    Is this place kid friendly?

Yes we are. Thank you for asking.

Says "dog friendly." Are dogs allowed inside or only on patio?

As I remember from my visit, I believe dogs only are allowed on their patio. And as they have a kitchen, I doubt they'd allow dogs inside.

The drinks were excellent--well-balanced, creative, and clearly made with skill. There was also a live musician performing during my visit who was amazing and added a great atmosphere and really elevated the overall vibe. Service, however, was a mixed experience. One of the bartenders (a newer female bartender) was very friendly, attentive, and showed a lot of potential--she made a great impression despite seeming a bit new. Unfortunately, the other bartender completely brought the experience down. He came across as rude, disengaged, and honestly like he didn't want to be there at all. I understand it was a busy night, but there was very little sense of urgency from him, and wait times felt longer than they should have been--even factoring in the crowd. That said, I do understand everyone can have an off night, and given how good the drinks and atmosphere were (plus the positive reviews I've seen elsewhere), I'd likely be willing to give it another shot. Overall, great cocktails and ambiance, but inconsistent service keeps it from being a top-tier experience--for now. I will be happy to update following a repeat visit.

Service has always been good when I went. I've probably gone under 10x and given enough tries at the new and old locations. Every time there's always something that goes wrong but I continue to come back because family and friends love it and I always try something else when I come in. Food is always edible most of the time but not great. I've had hair in my burger before. Other Burgers were overcooked and flavorless. Mac and cheese is disgusting. Sushi menu is kinda repeat and all fried / tempora. Pretty basic and boring and if you're gluten free you're kinda SOL. Crab Rangoon is imitation crab. Gross. This last time I went for a goodbye dinner to a coworker moving: Drinks- Table got a pitcher of white sangria- it was ok but way overpriced. I got the strawberry basil lemonade drink and it sucked. It lacked taste. I'n convinced it was water and not lemonade, nothing puree about it, & there was no basil in it besides used as a piece of decor. Sushi- I showed the waitress a picture of the roll I saw on someone review and that it claimed it was a Ottawa roll but it was not and 10/10 a different role that was given to me. Luckily I will eat anything and it actually wasn't bad but what the hell. Truffle fries- beer battered. Yuck. Mac & Cheese- I thought it used to be not bad but I got it this last time as a side and it was different noodles, thick, no creamy cheese sauce, & no seasoning. Dessert- 10/10 made the trip worth it. I hate fried ice cream and not a huge brownie person but that dessert was amazing. The beignet with caramel- yessss. I never get the hype of the food but think it's because there's not much around like this for locals. If someone wanted to go back I wouldn't not go but I am not a fan.

At the first stop we saw the dried up I and M canal where the only mention of ghosts was that the workers who died building the canal were buried in the canal. The highlight of this stop was the washroom in the old toll house. Second stop was a tiny graveyard next to a truck weigh station. We saw where Tom's family was buried. Last stop we saw the grave of a Texan who had been killed in the Civil War. There was nothing ghostly about this tour. Either the Ottawa area has nothing to offer in this regard and this tour doesn't need to exist. Or this tour operator should rename this tour. Not sure what I'd call it. As a history buff, I have taken other graveyard tours and they were far more interesting. One tour I took had graveside reenactments of the people buried there. In this case, it's hard to believe they charge $35 per person for so little information. What may be a well meaning venture to promote Ottawa's history was not a ghostly graveyard tour.
