Found this food stand at the Solano Avenue Stroll in Albany this past Sunday. Ordered a beef hot link and a potato & spinach knish. Wow, it made for a very satisfying meal. The hot link was perfectly grilled and juicy with just the right spice. The knish was slightly crisp on the outside, the mashed potato mix fluffy on the inside, with a strong taste of spinach and just a hint of garlic and onions. It was a nice savory treat, especially dipped in ketchup. The lines at the food stand went quickly, service was sufficient, and the wait for my order was just a few minutes, with self-serve condiments available on the side. read more

Chicken kebab from the lakeshore market was prob the worst most dried out meat I've ever bought anywhere!

We arrived at the Coachella music festival with stomachs a'grumbling, so first things first, before we saw any bands, we had to make a stop at the food court for water and sustenance. Perusing the options here, we chose Tante's for their chicken strips. I know what you're thinking--fried chicken strips?!?! I'm probably going to lose all my foodie street cred for what I'm about to write, but I've got a soft spot in my heart--quite literally, perhaps--for chicken strips. Sure they're one of the worst foods you could possibly consume, but I've always loved these tender morsels. I suspect my affinity started back as a wee child, when my grandma would make frozen chicken nuggets whenever my sister and I visited her. Now hold back your judgment--my grandmother, rest her soul, didn't have frozen food growing up and she thought my sister and I should have the opportunity she didn't have to dine on the food of the future cooked in a microwave. (This is the part when you should "ooohhh" and "aaahhh".) Now the chicken strips at Tante's booth were far more sophisticated than your run-of-the-mill frozen variety--at least that's what I keep telling myself to keep my street cred! The chicken was freshly breaded and fried, with large portions of juicy chicken and a light coating of breading that wasn't greasy in the slightest. The chicken strips were served with garlic fries. These were a little greasy, but let's face it, good garlic fries always are. There was great garlic taste, sure to fend off the vampires. And the serving was generous, maybe four or five pieces of chicken with a good portion of fries for $8, I think? The servers were friendly, fast and efficient--always welcome at any sort of food booth at a festival or fair. I also appreciated the design of the booth--they very clearly posted the menu and prices, with two lines clearly marked for ordering. It was a streamlined operation behind the wooden frame that kept the line moving so we didn't have to linger in the desert sun too long. I'm not sure what Tante's other catering options are like, but based on my experience at Coachella with other food vendors, I will say they're a far more organized operation. And sometimes that counts just as much as the quality of the food at these festivals. read more

Oakland Eat Real Festival 2010 [Stop #8] Potato-Spinach Knish - $5 I'm actually a bit surprised that this is the first Yelp review for Tante's. They seem like a well established food stand operating all over the Bay Area. One of my friends told me there was a booth at the festival serving up "fried mashed potatoes." I thought to myself "Hmm that's an interesting concept. I need to give this a try!" Turns out he was talking about knishes, which aren't deep fried at all. I guess you can associate them with mashed potatoes, but it's a completely different concept. Having grown up in a Jewish family, I was very excited to try Tante's rendition of a knish. At first, I was a bit weirded out because a knish usually has ground meat in it, while this one was just spinach and potatoes. With the first bite, I was VERY disappointed. Their menu lists garlic and salt as part of the ingredients, but that was no where to be found. This knish (hehe it rhymes) was completely bland and all three of us were hesitant about finishing it. I was excited to let me friends try a traditional Jewish dish, but Tante's failed me. I have a feeling Tante's is trying to advertise themselves as one of those healthy vegan places, but when you try to incorporate that with hundreds of years of tradition, it won't work too well. read more

Tante's was at the Mini Maker Faire last weekend at Park Day School. There were several food booths and, after looking at every one of them, I chose Tante's. Choices were limited to the family friendly items, chicken strips, fries, gourmet hot dogs, etc. The grilled chicken breast lavosh wrap was filled with diced chicken, diced cubes, tomatoes, greens and creamy dressing that was perfect except the wrap was too thin for the fillings. It was all wrapped in paper which kept most of the contents from dumping on the ground. It was so good that I didn't care that it was all over my hands by the time I finished it. Good thing I had three napkins around the paper! We also ordered fried chicken strips and fries that were good. I would certainly eat here again. read more

MY FIRST KNISH As an attendee of the Oakland Cat Video Festival the most disappointing thing was the lack of food options. Luckily, Tante's was there and the Knish sounded wonderful. Husband stood in line for one of their corn dogs and I ordered the crispy spinach/potato blend. There was a wait for mine and even though I was at the front of the wait long, and hadn't waited long, I felt like they took it off too early. It was only crispy on one side. A little bit messy to eat, especially with the hot sauce I added, but very good. It was the first (and only) knish I've ever had. I liked it! I had a bite of the corndog also - the crusty outside was awesome! I really liked their batter. Wish husband had ordered the spicy one! Would have LOVED to try that one also. read more

I love trying foods that I can't get anywhere else, so when I saw potato spinach knish on Tante's menu this weekend at the Palo Alto arts festival, I had to try it. Crisp on the outside and savory on the inside, the knish was a great in-between-meals snack. I only wish it was served with some kind of sour cream dipping sauce! read more

Found them at the Eat Real Festival in Oakland and got to try their potato and spinach knish. They have them frying on the griddle. I have to say it was the best knish I've had outside of New York City! Outside is crisp, and inside is rich, moist and flavorful. Service was quick. Their corn dog options didn't sound appetizing for me since I don't like them spicy. But the knish is definitely worth the try. I highly recommend it. read more

Oh, how I love corn dogs. They were all out of their original dogs for the night. But, I did snag a spicy dog. They're fried to perfection. Part of me wishes that the batter were thicker just because it was SOOO good. You don't need mustard on this dog. It's great just by itself. The spicy dog does give everything a nice kick that complements the sweetness of the cornbread. Oh, so gooood! Just wish the line was shorter at the Eat Real Fest. read more

Definitely not your typical NY deli potato knish. They are cooked on the griddle and have the shape and crispiness of Chinese hamburger (Beef Xian Bin). Super tasty. I wonder what a shwarma knish would taste like? =) read more

Another triumph in corn dog history! Same consistency different location. When I saw Tante's tent at the Eat Real Fest today I knew I'd have to have one of their heavenly corn dogs before I left. Even though I was stuffed, I got a corn dog to go and stuffed my face on the ride home. Memories of my first corn dog bliss flashed back to me and I'm still smiling. read more

They were at Eat Real 2012 and served corn dogs. We got the spicy corn dog and it was really good. The batter was freshly fried and delicious. And the hot dog was spicy and flavorful, but half way eating the corn dog, we discovered they sliced the dog in half?! Really. Yeah. For $5, I expect a whole dog. read more

I recently had the felafel wrap from Tante's while at the First City Festival in Monterey. With so many amazing (looking) food choices, boy did I make the wrong one! $9 for a store bought lavash wrap, 2 lousy pieces of felafel, and the rest... lettuce. What a ripoff! Tante's has the best knish in town, hands down. I had never actually had a spinach knish (its not in my mom's repertoire) but when I bit into it, I got a burst of juicy flavor with a perfect crisp on the outside. I then proceeded to buy another for breakfast the next day. The people that work the stand are very friendly, and the cooks for sure know what they are doing. Overall great experience. read more

The description of a knish ($5) sounded good. Potatoes, onions, and spinach wrapped in dough. I don't think I've ever had a knish until today and I'm not sure I liked it. It could simply have been that by the time I tried the knish I had already eaten a good number of other things so I was feeling full and didn't fully appreciate what a knish is. It wasn't good. GREAT FOOD. I would be giving 5 stars for the deliciousness of the chicken shawarma, however the incredibly rude attitude by the cashier at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival completely undermined any reason to support such an establishment. As someone who has worked in the service industry for 6+ years, I am dumbfounded this woman is still employed by such a highly rated business. Someone who greets and serves customers with a scowl, slumped over the register and clear disdain for the "effort" she was being put through, is pretty baffling. We watched our food,ready and sitting, as 6-7 other people were served ahead of us, with the same order. I don't know if I managed to do something offensive in our 45 second transaction, but I do know want another wrap. Sadly, I would rather suck a stranger's toes at this point. read more

I'm from NY and have been searching for a great knish in the Bay area. Not the kind wrapped in a horrible square crust. The knish I had today at the Solano Stroll was even better than Bubbe's. The outside was flaky and the inside was so tasty! If you are looking for a great knish, don't miss Tante's. I hope we will be able to buy some to bring home and not shlep at a street fair.
