    Oakland Eat Real Festival 2010

Oakland Eat Real Festival 2010 [Stop #8] Potato-Spinach Knish - $5 I'm actually a bit surprised that this is the first Yelp review for Tante's. They seem like a well established food stand operating all over the Bay Area. One of my friends told me there was a booth at the festival serving up "fried mashed potatoes." I thought to myself "Hmm that's an interesting concept. I need to give this a try!" Turns out he was talking about knishes, which aren't deep fried at all. I guess you can associate them with mashed potatoes, but it's a completely different concept. Having grown up in a Jewish family, I was very excited to try Tante's rendition of a knish. At first, I was a bit weirded out because a knish usually has ground meat in it, while this one was just spinach and potatoes. With the first bite, I was VERY disappointed. Their menu lists garlic and salt as part of the ingredients, but that was no where to be found. This knish (hehe it rhymes) was completely bland and all three of us were hesitant about finishing it. I was excited to let me friends try a traditional Jewish dish, but Tante's failed me. I have a feeling Tante's is trying to advertise themselves as one of those healthy vegan places, but when you try to incorporate that with hundreds of years of tradition, it won't work too well.

MY FIRST KNISH As an attendee of the Oakland Cat Video Festival the most disappointing thing was the lack of food options. Luckily, Tante's was there and the Knish sounded wonderful. Husband stood in line for one of their corn dogs and I ordered the crispy spinach/potato blend. There was a wait for mine and even though I was at the front of the wait long, and hadn't waited long, I felt like they took it off too early. It was only crispy on one side. A little bit messy to eat, especially with the hot sauce I added, but very good. It was the first (and only) knish I've ever had. I liked it! I had a bite of the corndog also - the crusty outside was awesome! I really liked their batter. Wish husband had ordered the spicy one! Would have LOVED to try that one also.

Tante's knish...just the best west coast knish!

Quite simply, these are the BEST fish tacos I've ever had in the Bay Area…read more The place is half a block from my studio, so I have the privilege of confirming this opinion at least once a week. I've also brought plenty of friends and family here to try them, and the verdict is always the same: wonderful! I've heard that pretty much everything else on the menu is equally excellent, but I'm completely addicted to the fish tacos, so I've never managed to order anything else. It's cozy, friendly, and incredibly efficient if you happen to be in a hurry. I honestly couldn't recommend it more highly, or more fondly.

The hype over their fish tacos is well deserved! The fish pieces were battered, fried, and very…read moresubstantial. I really enjoyed the creamy orange sauce. $5.75 a taco may seem a bit much, but at least the taco size and quality justifies the price. I also ordered the smaller size of ceviche for $15. It came with 2 large round tortilla chips (not sure what these are called) and a packet of saltine crackers. I feel like a bag of tortilla chips would have gone nicely with the ceviche because I ran out of the 2 large chips and crackers before I finished the ceviche. The ceviche itself was perfect. Their spinach pineapple agua fresca was refreshing and reminded me of those Odwalla green smoothies. You do taste the spinach but it's sweet and tastes good! I got here around 5:40 on a Friday and there was plenty of outdoor seating available, though it did start to fill up the longer I stayed. You can enter on either side of the back of Aloha.
