Santa Fe Footprints Tours - Santa Fe in its finest

Led by veteran guide Bob Ackenhausen and local naturalist Terry, the company focuses on delivering insights into the region's unique architecture, diverse culture, history, and natural ecology. I took a friend's suggestions and booked an historical walking tour of the Plaza area of Santa Fe on our first morning here. I've been to Santa Fe several times over the years, but individual touring often doesn't go deep enough as you sometimes walk by something without much thought. Some examples of that during our Santa Fe Footprints tour was Burro Alley, the Spitz Clock, and the Solders Monument. Our guide for our 2 hour deep dive was Terry. We were impressed with his knowledge and insights, and I'm sure Gayle and I will see him again when we return to Santa Fe next year. Other choices may include the Botanical Garden, History Museum, Bandelier, and other "hidden" treasures.

Bob Ackenhausen and Santa Fe footprints were fantastic. First off, Bob is super responsive to email and texts. Bob greeted us at Henry and the Fish at 900am. He's relaxed and puts you at ease. The next two hours were delightful. We learned so much American, Spanish and Mexican history. It was not a lot of walking however there were so many interesting tidbits along his route. Bob is extremely knowledgeable and we totally recommend him. Santa Fe is a wonderful town and thanks to Bob, we'll have wonderful memories!!!

She had difficulty telling a linear story and mostly related personal anecdotes about her two children, her husband, her home and which bars served the best Margaritas. She promoted various shops, the owners of which were ostensibly her "friends," and filled the tour time with similar trivia. For five years, I was a tour guide in San Francisco and we received extensive training on how to provide a meaningful experience for our walkers, both substantively and through effective presentation techniques. I've taken walking tours in many cities, and in my experience this was about as poor a tour as I've seen. The fee of $40 was exorbitant in relation to the experience; even if it had been free, I would have considered it largely a waste. Perhaps the other guides in the company are better, but based on this tour, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

My complaint about the Historical Walks offering is that the guide, Allan, really wasn't someone who's a paranormal expert or buff, but a historian who seemed to have a very hard time staying on topic--ghosts. He was extremely long-winded about all kinds of historical minutiae, but short on ghost stories. We spent the first hour, an HOUR--just sitting in the La Fonda Hotel lobby while he droned on and on with the "introduction." I literally dozed off. And I love ghost tours and history. The ghost walk was very short--the old hospital and La Posada, and the hanging tree. I'm sure there's lots more in the area, isn't there? At La Posada he spent more time talking about the furniture and chandeliers than the ghost stuff. There are plenty of historical tours, but someone looking for the ghost tour is getting a short shrift with this one. This guide, Allan, seemed to think he was teaching a class rather than acting as a tour guide. In short, it was boring. Also, the promotional cards and website insist guest make advance reservations. I had to call twice to get a call back, and the person calling was extremely rude. Really poor customer service, and a disappointing ghost walk. There are other operators offering ghost walks, including one called "Original Ghost Walk of Santa Fe." I'm going to check that out. In other cities and towns, it is often the original one who is the real expert.

Mary transformed what could have been an overwhelming stroll into a curated, engaging, and educational experience. She guided us through a moveable story of Santa Fe: Native and Indigenous art galleries where we learned more about Santa Fe's history, an artist-in-residence home where we discovered how Canyon Road developed, and contemporary galleries where she introduced us to owners and working artists. Along the way, she also pointed out additional galleries, eateries, cafés, and gardens worth returning to--I took notes and can't wait to visit again. Mary was knowledgeable, friendly, and flexible, making the tour both interactive and accessible. She seemed to know everyone--every gallery owner we visited greeted her--which made us feel like we were walking in with a VIP or a local celebrity. As a matter of fact, I'd book this tour with Mary again on my next visit just to explore more galleries we didn't get to this time. The behind-the-scenes insights, personal introductions, and Mary's thoughtful curation elevated the entire experience and greatly reduced my FOMO. Booking the tour was seamless as well! The operators were a pleasure to work with, very responsive, and flexible in helping us arrange the experience. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to go beyond simply "looking at art" and really connect with the history, people, and culture of Canyon Road.

He was knowledgeable, he took the time to understand our group interests and dynamics, and he came up with a jam-packed, information-rich tour that everyone LOVED, led by four guides that everyone had nothing but glowing reviews for. I couldn't have been happier with Peter, his guides, or the tours they led us on. We all left with a deeper, richer understanding of and appreciation for Santa Fe. Highly recommend.

Our tour was interesting, funny, and interactive. Peter was excellent at managing our large and lively group, and balanced education with entertainment like the pro he is. I was particularly appreciative of the context he provided to us of the historical facts so that we could truly begin to understand Santa Fe's past and present. As a Bostonian, I was ready to fight when he started talking about oldest this and oldest that, and I left his tour far more aware of the huge blind spots my northeastern education left me with, although he started to help me fill them. Friends who were with other tour guides from the company similarly raved about their experience.
