I cannot rave about this place enough. I frequent Tapas 177 with friends, coworkers and sometimes after a long day for a glass of wine. Their wine selection is fantastic, they have reds you cannot find elsewhere in the city. It's the place to go when you need a summer breeze in winter. Their sangria will take you to the beach! The owner has put together a fantastic menu and will gladly find a wine to pair for you. There isn't a bad dish in the whole place, it's wonderful. One bar and some small seating upstairs with a full dining room and additional bar downstairs with an outdoor patio. The service is friendly if not always the swiftest but you have to understand the atmosphere. It's casual but upscale, time moves slower inside. The lighting is fantastic, the music is perfection making for an overall atmosphere that will make you feel as though you're on vacation when you're just a few blocks from home. Also, they DJ downstairs for events and have salsa nights weekly. It's the most wonderful place to be on the weekends because the whole place turns into a dance floor! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Rochester. The bartender, D, makes the best cocktails I've ever had. The food is like something you'd see on a Gordan Ramsay cooking show, and they serve it until 2 am. If you order gourmet food at 1:30 am, it looks the same as if you ordered it at 7 pm. It feels like you're in NYC while you're there. read more

I feel like I must have reviewed this already because this is one of my absolute favorite places to go. I've spent so many wonderful nights here celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, work promotions, salsa dancing on summer nights, enjoying the mix and match of ethnic cuisines. Because tapas does tapas, you can get pretty much anything here. My favorite but retired item was their wild mushroom risotto which I beg for every time I go in (sadly it's not on the menu anymore). My other MUST HAVE is the beef bugogi. I mean... my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The wine is always great, I love the dark atmosphere, so intimate and romantic. Perfect for small groups or a couple even though I have seen big parties there! read more

Beautiful location! Don't let the bar upstairs fool you the downstairs and back deck area are gorgeous. Perfect spot for first dates and hanging out with friends new and old. The wine selection is great, and the food was amazing. Must try the Calamari! read more

We went here for my husband's b-day. Street parking available, Piscina sours were delicious! We shared the crab cakes, Mussels/broth/broth, and Shrimp/pasta and andouille. They were delicious, very nuanced flavors/spices. The mussels were yummy, but, harder to eat. I would have loved bread or rice to sop up the broth. The shrimp pasta, was the strongest, spicy and Smokey, and a huge dinner portion. Excellent experience, my only critique is the lighting/ventilation, and we asked for our food to be wrapped and one of the plates was wrapped. We will be back! read more

I've been here a handful of times now. I want to love this place, but for me the food is always just ok. The overall experience is always pretty good though. Their menu always looks phenomenal and they actually just changed/updated their menu. The parking can be tricky here, so I always use valet parking or now take an Uber. The atmosphere is awesome. It is a salsa bar and the upstairs bar is lively and has great drinks. They do salsa dancing certain nights of the week. Their mojitos are delish and so are the bartenders. The restaurant is down stairs and it's very cool. It's dark and has very cozy tables. The outside wall is lined with a cushioned couch-like bench and throw pillows. Half of your party sits on this if you're seated at one of these tables. It's my favorite place to sit. Onto the food... their menu is impressive, but when the food came out, everything was lacking in flavor and was only lukewarm. Their staff is phenomenal, but every time I go there I feel like the food is lacking and I'm disappointed. I do recommend the flourless chocolate cake with ice cream though! read more

We stopped in here after my wife had to visit her very ill aunt. Turned her mood right around. The service was fantastic - although I couldn't figure out the parking situation either. Each dish is elegantly compiled full of flavor and character. We had the lamb chops (decent), tostada (wow and with an egg), beet carpaccio which I couldn't stop eating, and the spicy chicken curry. The last one has a brilliant kick you don't expect. Great vibe with lots of happy people and free flowing drinks. I don't know Rochester enough to compare to other restaurants in the area .... But if you can go here I definitely would! read more

I love love love this place! I have come here with friends for a drinks, apps, and chit chat and this place is perfect. I have come on off nights though with no live music which I think lends to a better atmosphere for talking - just a heads up to check the entertainment before you go. I went last night, and their naan pizza is what inspired me to write the review. The bartender recommended, and he steered us right! Fantastic! I know they rotate the menu, so I hope to see this item being reused in the future. I also had the prosciutto wrapped artichoke hearts and the mushroom won tons which were also a hit. Very good service each time I have gone. Drinks were always being refilled and anytime we needed something someone was there to help us. Good job Tapas! I think this is a trendy place for a happy hour or a place to hang with friends late night for a drink and small food. I have not tried the entrees yet...I enjoy this place for more of small dishes to share and drinks rather than dinner. read more

Should have posted this a while ago but wife & I had great meal the prosciutto wrapped artichokes were to die for!!! Highly recommend waiting to eat those last on your Tapas go round. I liked the short rib burger slider when I tried it. Wife liked the crispy Panko shrimp. We were seated downstairs and yes it was a bit dark but way cool on the atmosphere. We will be back. Staff was great and it was kinda cool how you walked into the bar then downstairs to enjoy a great meal. Patio out back is cool too! read more

This place has a very artistic atmosphere. It had that sense of relaxation when you arrive. We went there because they had vegan/vegetarian and GF options and there were quite a bit to choose from! The only thing is the prices were a bit high, probably would've been better if it was a bit lower. We ordered the flatbread pizza (vegan) which was good! The mushroom risotto was amazing too! We had the avocado and vegetable spring roll with he peanut sauce which was to die for. Overall the food was delicious! Prices could a bit more reasonable as I had mentioned earlier. We had a kid with us and unfortunately there was no kid menu which is to be expected for that kind of place. But they were very accommodating and was willing to make a pizza for her which was great! read more

"Tapas" is such a great spot! The vibe is very intimate and romantic, without being stuffy and old fashioned. Their food is very creative and there's quite a lot of options. I especially appreciate their gluten free/vegan menus, as I have different food allergies. I've never eaten something there that I didn't like! In the summertime, I would highly recommend eating on the back porch patio. Sitting back there literally makes you feel like you're in Europe, I kid you not. Don't miss out! read more

Another great evening full of awesome food and beverages with a large group of friends. Tapas never disappoints us. Tuna tartar, portobello cream cheese wontons, chicken egg rolls, shrimp naan pizza, meatballs, prosciutto wrapped artichokes (just pass me the whole thing and I'll take care of them), mixed greens salad plus fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers. Entrées? Flank steak, chicken with penne and a wine sauce plus, the ever so awesome 3 seed seared tuna. No one left hungry for sure. 11 out of 10 service from Hannah and Kelly once again plus a great job by Sal at the bar! Chef Casey outdid himself as usual especially for a very busy Saturday night. Rusty and I love Tapas 177. They have an interesting, unique and affordable menu of 'tapas' to dine on while you sip finely concocted drinks with friends (the bartenders here do not skip on the alcohol--but beware, when it gets close to closing time they JACK UP the prices). Their flavored margaritas are good, try the pomegranate. Also, we never went their without getting the calamari salad. The food is simple, yet excellent. The crowd here is quite mellow during the early hours, but once the band starts playing downstairs, things quickly liven up. It has the tendency to get packed on weekends, but if you want a nice relaxing evening out of the house on a Sunday, this place is perfect! I think that they sometimes have free salsa dancing lessons. They also have a DJ on some nights, and plenty of holiday events. Great place to take a date. read more

I've been to Tapas 177 a few times now and every time has gotten better and better. It's safe to say this review has been coming for a while but I'm glad I am reviewing it after eating there for a second time as it was by far my best experience. The upstairs bar is nice. It's often packed during happy hours, and especially Friday which I think is the busiest time. However packed it might be, you'll always be able to find a spot to hang out (whether it be inside or outside), friendly staff and an amazing drink list. The specials are fantastic as well. What you might not see just by looking from outside is that downstairs they have tabled seating for what can only be described as a dining experience. Tapas is true to its name by offering a tapas style menu ranging from a duo of meatballs and aracini to idli pancakes (and a smattering of seafood options in between). The entree's are fantastic too but I can't rave enough about the tapas menu options. This last time we went, we opted for a few different dishes - Grilled Octopus, Flash fried calimari, the Meatball and Aracini duo, Portobello cream cheese wontons, and Idli Pancakes. All were amazing, and I would try each one again. All in all, Tapas is a great establishment and I enjoy it every time I'm there. read more

A few friends and I just visited Tapas 177 on a Tuesday night. They must have changed the lighting a but since I was there last because it was much more inviting! We were seated immediately and ordered drinks. I got the sangria and my friends got specialty cocktails. The sangria was good but the "Poncha" was out of this world! So yummy. We ordered several tapas, including the fried calamari, the meatball & arancini, the scallops, the cream cheese/mushroom wontons, and the tuna tartar. The scallops and fried calamari we amazing! Highly recommend. The only thing that left me wanting more was the tuna tartar, I wish it had some sort of sauce or more avocado. Overall, a very enjoyable meal with great service! Tapas 177 was highly recommended to me by a good friend. So my mom and I decided to go for drinks and a bite to eat. We came in on a Sunday evening around 5pm when they opened. We opted to sit on the outdoor patio since it was a warm summer evening. The patio has a great ambiance for summertime dining! We took a glance at the drink menu and decided on our drinks. My mom had the mojito and I had a coconut caipirinha. Our sever was incredibly knowledgeable and attentive. Both of the drinks were very strong and tasty. For food we ordered the crab cakes and calamari. Both were incredibly delicious and flavorful. We ordered a couple more rounds of drinks (I switched to the Make Out which was also a very good drink) before deciding to order the chips and guacamole. The guacamole was the best seasoned and creamiest guacamole I'd had in a long time. After having such a great time out on the patio it started to rain so we took the party to the upstairs bar. Adair was the bartender that evening and he was also incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at Tapas 177. We also learned that they have different specials during the week such as a ladies night on Wednesdays and free salsa lessons on Thursdays. I definitely recommend Tapas to others who are looking for a fun experience in downtown Rochester. I know I'll definitely be back! read more

Very good. We loved the atmosphere, location, cocktails, food, and service. My husband and I live about 1.5 hours away and I'm vegan and it's hard to find a restaurant that serves something for me besides fries or salad so we picked this little gem and it was worth the trip! I actually wound up here, half because I wanted to try it, half because it was the only thing I could find open. I wasn't really disappointed. The food was good as per my tip below. Get Portabello wontons and tuna tartare, both were excellent. Prepare to have a tough time deciding what you want off the menu :) The presentation on the dishes was unexpected, very nice. They have a list of specialty martinis that ehhhhh, almost falls flat. some good choices but I think it could be better. If this place would revamp the martini list and the menu just a bit, it would really pop. And get some new menus or laminate them :) The decor here is really cool, the mood is good and the staff was nice. If you like this place and happen to be in Denver, try "The Ninth Door" or "the L lounge" this place reminds me a bit of both which is a good thing :) read more

I love tapas!! We had a big party (15+ people) for a birthday and they were fantastic! They accommodated all of us so well, handled 7-8 split checks with no problem, and tolerated our loudness really well. The food was delicious (adobo rubbed steak and pancetta carbonara) though the adobo steak didn't really taste like adobo. This place was also really great for a date, or a small group setting. It's probably not great for young kids, but kids old enough to sit and hang out are more than welcome! read more

This place is absolutely gorgeous - amazing atmosphere and great food! Plus I LOVE how they have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options on their menu. The bar area is so spacious and has this great artwork all over, but the main dining area is downstairs. The decor was intimate and bohemian with low lighting; it's PERFECT for a date night. The prices are okay, and the idea of the place is to get a few plates to share which is a fun way to try a couple things. read more

This is definitely a favorite spot of mine in Rochester. I recently ate here for my third time in about a year and "ne'er" time has disappointed me. If you've read any of my reviews from seafood or Italian Restaurants before, you may be familiar with my "Calamari Quest". Though this restaurant can't be classified as either Italian or a seafood restaurant, they have made the list of top places to eat calamari. With tapas traditionally being Spanish plates, I was not prepared for the wide variety of dishes that they had to offer. Don't let the name "Tapas" deceive you into thinking it's a Spanish restaurant; because you'll find few Spanish dishes and the plates are anything but small. On my most recent visit, I ordered three appetizers: the Calamari Salad (go figure), the Bulgogi Crisp and the Game sausage plate. I was full after eating the calamari salad and took the other items with me. Though this is not an Asian Restaurant, their flavors on the bulgogi were "spot-on" (they sell Pho too on Mon and Tue). I expected more flavor from the sausages themselves, but they are served with flavorful sides of cranberries and onions. The food is prompt, fresh and tasty! On previous visits, I've attended salsa night and another night on which they drew a very nice crowd, so this is a great place to socialize if you go out alone and is just as great if you want to enjoy an intimate evening with others. Depending on the night and the time, it can get loud, so check first if you're looking for a quiet place to eat. In addition to Salsa night (on which they have lessons), they also have other events on various nights to ensure that individuals and groups have a good time. The employees are always very knowledgeable and friendly and the other patrons are also a delight...so get out there and try them for yourself. You shouldn't be disappointed. read more

Came here for a late night Saturday dinner before Salsa. Ordered a mojito which was outstanding and two specials for that day. Mussels appetizer was in a creamy champagne sauce which was good and the main dish was penne with mushrooms in a creamy truffle sauce. The pasta wasn't my favorite and I wouldn't get it again. At 11 PM a live salsa band started and part of the downstairs table area was cleared to make a dance floor. Super fun atmosphere and I would definitely come back for some more mojitos and appetizers read more

Went here last night for a company Christmas party and had an absolute ball. The food was delicious, the ghouda meatballs and portabello mushroom with cream cheese wontons were absolutely out of this world delicious. Christmas cookies at the end were a very nice touch. The food was always kept warm and there was plenty to eat the whole time. Bartenders were friendly and quick. I don't recall having to wait more than two minutes for a bartender to ask what I needed. Atmosphere is very cute, trendy, cozy. Everyone very much enjoyed themselves, and I will be keeping Tapas on my list for next destinations for dinner! read more

Service was decent but this is a dining environment where you are not rushed out the door. Dishes come out sporadically so you are meant for slow dining. This is a good place to celebrate a special occasion or if you just want something different while in Kingston.

Horrible business practices, I bet that if I didn't reach out to them and never saw about this change on Instagram, I would have showed up for my rehearsal dinner to discover this mess. We decided to do the classics "Sippin' South" themed dinner. We had already done a beer pairing dinner at the classics several years ago, when they collaborated with one of our favorite local breweries, iron tug, to create an amazing multicourse experience. Next couple of cocktails included a take on a highball, a sweeter, coconut, flavored cocktail featuring a rum caste bourbon, and finally ending with a toasted bourbon drink that reminded me of an after dinner port. As far as the food, the chicken slider was delicious, and the chicken itself was well seasoned, my only nitpick was perhaps some sort of a aïoli spread to make it a little bit more moist, but this was made up by a delicious coleslaw with fresh vegetables! The lamb was excellent and served with perfectly cooked polenta. We finally ended with one of my favorite dishes, the caramel pecan bread pudding, which was a great end to this lovely dinner. Lastly, I thought the service was excellent and the dishes were well timed, I wish there were one or two more courses because the price was a bit steep in my opinion for the amount of food, although the drinks were plentiful and let's just say I was glad to have a designated driver!! All in all, we will return again to the classic kitchen :)

All 3 were 10/10 on the taste scale. My favorite of the gnocchi flight is the one with pesto. The arancini was so tasty and the sauce that came with them was a perfect pairing. The cilantro crema on the ahi tuna martini was the star of the dish. Her cocktail special, a kiwi and vodka drink, was watery and bland. A few other frustrations: the vegan items are not labeled as such on the menu, which is an easy fix that would doubtless help many diners. There is only one vegan entrée, which feels thin. And Lagunitas non-alcoholic beer is available, but you would never know it, since it does not appear on the drinks menu. We will not be returning.

First and foremost, I have to call out their drink menu - while ultimately we came to enjoy a nice dinner, their cocktails were by far the biggest star of the show, with our entrees trailing very closely behind. If you like to partake in alcoholic beverages, I can say without a doubt these are the best cocktails I've had in Rochester, let alone all of Western NY, and this is even put up against drinks from the likes of Cure, Bitter Honey, and Avvino. I don't know if the bartender is just using higher quality spirits as a result of REDD being an upscale restaurant, but the "Burn after Reading", "Wise Guy", and Manhattan are some of the smoothest, most delicious, multi-noted drinks I've had in my entire life. If I don't come back for the food, I will absolutely be back for the drinks, because my goodness, abso-freaking-lutely phenomenal. My friends and I still talk about them now even weeks later. For our entrees we had the NY strip steak, grilled chicken, and a poached salmon, and every single piece of protein was cooked just perfectly. The steak was a beautiful warm medium rare, the chicken was glistening with succulent juiciness, and the poached salmon which I had for my main is one of the softest pieces of fish I've had in my life. It beautifully flaked away on a bed of potato puree and extremely well herbed and seasoned home fry-like potatoes that were ever-so-slightly just-undercooked intentionally to act as a perfect foil to the gorgeously soft puree and salmon itself. If I were to knock anything at all, the winter squash, turnip, and green vegetable medley that came with the chicken and steak was unfortunately far too undercooked for my liking, almost to the point of being completely raw, and while I appreciate letting vegetables sing and respect the beauty of raw, fresh vegetables, I was hoping for a little bit more of chef-y flair, seasoning, or even cooking of them. Besides that, the wait staff was simply top tier and were extremely inviting throughout the entire evening. We felt taken care of and checked up on often and they were the utmost professional. The only thing that was a true negative was the desserts -- if there's one thing I would NEVER order at REDD again, unfortunately our dessert missed the mark entirely. My best guess is due to lack of a pastry chef, but our chocolate tart was muddy and flavorless, not even tasting of chocolate, and the two homemade ice creams we tried - chocolate, and oatmeal followed in suit. We ultimately wrapped up at REDD but then ran down to Char Steak & Grill at the Strathallan for what ended up being a phenomenal dessert experience there. But overall, I have to say - I will definitely be back! The entrees were awesome, the cocktails were life-changing, and the ambience and wait staff were without fault.
