I have so much fun at this place everytime I go. The food is original and eclectic, making this one of the best places to take people who are willing to try a bit of everything. If you haven't been to a tapas place before, basically everything is to share and you order about 2 dishes per person. I would say that 4 people is the optimal amount for a table, as you get to try most things, but still have enough in each dish for everyone to try some. I've tried the octopus with potato salad, lamb rack, salad with quail, curry, and aracini with meatball. Everything was delicious. This literally hidden underground gem of a restaurant is one of the coolest places in Rochester. Looks like a cocktail lounge but down the steep stairs is a cozy, red velvet curtained restaurant with a genius menu. There's even a back deck. Simply the best. I lived in Rochester when this originally opened and practically lived in this restaurant. I live away now, but whenever I come back into town, as we did this weekend, this is the one place I want to be. Amazing food, great drinks, friendly staff, beautiful building. All of the dishes are fun and eclectic. We had an arancini dish last night that instead of being the usual small rice balls was one big one we could carve and share and it was superb. The calamari salad is fantastic and is the only dish (I believe) that has stayed on the menu for the last 25 years that this place has been open. Go, and have a wonderful evening. I am jealous. I've been to Tapas many times for their awesome Latin nights. For Valentine's Day this year, I tried the food for the first time ever. It was ok. I got the vegan pizza. For the price, it was quite small. I was not full at all. The taste wasn't all that good either. It was bland and not memorable. Tapas is definitely for the more fancier crowd. I'm just not into that. However, service has always been great here and I've never had an issue with the drinks. Also, the vibe is great. Dim lighting, full bars on both floors, diverse crowd. I probably won't eat here again, but I'll continue enjoying the Latin nights! read more

Hidden gem-- very eclectic- downtown Rochester. Everything that we ordered was full flavor. I had the mussels and loved the wine broth they were in. My table also ordered house chips and salsa with fresh salsa/guacamole, chicken Marsala and shrimp naan pizza. Everyone was satisfied and pleasantly surprised with the menu. I finally fulfilled a wishlist item when I got to check out Tapas 177! It was a Saturday night around 8pm and there was an hour wait for the dining area so my friend and I headed over to the bar (which was also packed) Their bar area is super tiny, so you'll be lucky to find a seat on the weekends. We somehow snagged one though, so lucky! You have access to the full food and drink menu at the bar, so that was awesome. The bar tender was friendly and efficient so good service. For drinks I got the make-out and for food I got the octopus. The drink tasted great at first, but as I got more into, it turned into a bitter and more cough syrupy flavor. I finished it but I wouldn't get it again. The octopus dish was pretty ok. The octopus was cooked well, no chewiness or weird fishy flavor so I appreciated that. It came on a bed of mashed potatoes and apparently had bacon on it. The potatoes needed more cooking I think. I get that the style wasn't a smooth mash but the texture wasn't as soft as I think it should be. It also had a semi-strange tangy-ness to it. I didn't taste any of the bacon either, maybe I imagined it on the menu but it wasn't really there? At any rate, I think I'll be coming back to try their other dishes since they have so many flavors to offer. And their drink menu is pretty big too and I love how the bar table is big enough for you to enjoy a nice dinner. read more

The only good thing was our waitress honestly. The food was gross we went home and ate ramen after. Each chip we are ew had to dust off with salt. Calamari had to be frozen fresh because it tasted like rubber. The decor is strange and just a weird Dracula type vibe. We also got sat in the basement it was just weird and would never go back for food honestly. We got a bottle of wine it was nice, although there were not many options. Fun experience trying several different small plates in an intimate setting. We tried the empanaditas, mushroom wontons, Brussels sprouts, and lamb. All of these were awesome! The wontons were bursting with deep woody mushroom flavor, and the Chipotle cream sauce served with the empanaditas was deeply flavorful and just the right amount of spicy. The lamb was cooked perfectly. Our server mentioned a few enticing specials and even though we didn't get the chance to try them this time, it's nice to know that there will be some interesting new specials on offer when we inevitably return. I've always been meaning to go here and my friend and I came here for drinks and apps and weren't disappointed. There is a small outdoor area, a large bar and tables downstairs. I had to pay for parking, but could easily find an open spot. We each got a mojito which was so fresh with the mint and lime. We split the portobello cream cheese wontons which the shell was crispy and the mushroom and cream cheese melted in your mouth. The avocado and veggie spring rolls had the most divine peanut sauce that I could eat by itself, but the rolls themselves were overall bland. Lastly, we got the tofu Tiki masala which the tofu was firm with nice texture and the sauce was everything you would want. Overall disappointed I haven't stopped by sooner, but will definitely be back! read more

This place has won me over time after time. Demetrio (sorry if I butchered the spelling) is amazing, warm and so down to earth. He always makes sure our time is nothing short of wonderful. I've had at least fifteen meals here and can vouch that almost everything I have eaten I've been head over heels for. The Jamaican chicken curry is my ALL TIME FAVORITE dish. The chicken is so tender it melts in your mouth and it comes over basmati rice which soaks up the curry and juice. The dish has a kick but I wouldn't consider it super spicy or hot. The consistency of this place is what keeps me coming back. Also, the kitchen is open extremely late which is a plus for people in the industry looking for quality food and not just chicken wings and french fries. I was able to order crab cakes and seared scallops at the 12:15 AM one time and they didn't lack in quality. The crab cakes, scallops, empanadas, chicken curry, octopus, shrimp flatbread, mussels are always on point. Every single time. The only dish I had that I didn't love was the lamb lollipops and honestly I just didn't enjoy the flavor profiles that were paired with it. DO NOT SKIP DESSERT. The flourless chocolate cake is heaven. Actually I lied, all of their desserts are heaven. They have this banana friend ice cream thing with cinnamon (forgot the name) and can't find it on the site... just order it. AMAZING. You will have a wonderful time no matter when you go! If you're looking for an expert mixologist and a place to blow off some steam at the end of the day, I recommend this place. The bar is welcoming and the ambiance is quite sexy. It also has a great dining area downstairs but if you find me here you'll find me sitting at the bar hanging with Demetrios. It's like a home away from home. I work very long hours so being able to walk into a place late night and still get an exceptional meal is quite the treat in a post covid world. We planned a special night out, and it turned out to be such a disappointment. Calamari should be lightly breaded and flash fried. These were neither. Hard and rubbery. The beef offering was a flat iron steak that was cooked medium rare, but every slice was rubbery, chewy, and inedible. The mushroom wontons had a weird slimy flavorless filling in a hard wonton wrapper. We couldn't eat them. The salmon cakes were made with canned salmon. I do not understand that. I make much better at home. Then there were the arancini that were completely devoid of any seasoning. This seems to be a fairly popular restaurant. It's perplexing to us. read more

Well damn, theres a reason why a lot of Elite members rated this place very well. We walked here from the Hyatt which was about 5-6 blocks down. Took us about 8 minutes, walked in finding out we get id checked right at the door.. (oh to feel young again). We walked downstairs to the eat-in part of the restaurant. The whole first floor is just a bar which we weren't informed of and had to explore our way down to the dungeon. At first i wasn't too impressed because we had to explore to find out where to eat and when we got down we werent immediately greeted, but those are minor things that didnt really phase us. The scenery was pretty cool, it was dark but chic. The lights were dim almost as if it was completely lit by candles but not too dark that it was annoying. I dont know if im making the best picture in your minds but it was very cool down here. we were sat in a comfy seat which kind of reminded me of Buddakhan in NYC. I had another local craft beer which i found was delicious only if i remembered the name then i proceeded to order the rack of lamb and my girlfriend ordered the mussels. AND HOLY WOW were these dishes amazing. It was the perfect size, not to small that i was still hungry and not too large that my tongue and stomach would be overly full with food. When it came to dessert we ordered the flan and i ordered the xango?? It came with icecream and whip cream and some fried dish and together it was an orgasm in my mouth. Our servers name was Hanna i believe, shes the nice lady with blonde dreads. She was super nice and helpful with our dinner choices. I believe i tipped her atleast 20% because of how awesome she was. If there is one unique place to go in the city of Rochester it's here. Oh my gosh, a fan of this place for at least 15 years. Always a fan although I haven't been here in years. They are still consistently serving up a great atmosphere with great food and service. It will probably date me but I missed the dripping candles on the walls. This Buffalo-lovin' gal is speechless ... because I just ate at a restaurant that put many of my favorite spots in B-lo to shame ... While the food was on par with most casual-upscale, trendy places, what sets Tapas 177 apart is the atmosphere and the service. If you have the opportunity, ask for a spot on the back patio. I loved sitting out there under the string lights with candles, while looking up at the sky between two buildings. I loved the city feel. The service was some of the best I have ever experienced (and I am very picky given my 7+ years of waitressing experience). Our server's name was Jennifer. She was pleasant, prompt, not overbearing but attentive. Conscious of our time limitations but not at all pushy. She had a sixth sense for when we needed something. Also, the "bus boy" (for lack of a better term) was always there to clean our table and remove plates after each course. He was likewise friendly and attentive while professionally trying to remain obscure. As for the food: we had quite a few appetizers, all were excellent (the steamed dumplings were the only ones that I might dock a star for but they were still decent). For dessert, try the banana's foster ... wow ... 5 appetizers, 1 dessert and 1 bottle of wine = approx $90. Not bad at all for this charming urban destination. read more
