    Tapori exceeded expectations! We walked in on a Sunday night without a reservation as a party of two, and I think we were lucky to get seated because it was busy! The restaurant is beautifully decorated with artwork and dim lighting. We had a little secluded booth with beads draping around our table. We tried the ragda pattice, tapori naan, butter chicken and dum biryani. Everything was delicious. They did a table side torching of the butter onto the butter chicken dish. It was flavorful and filling! We had a great experience and will definitely recommend Tapori.

    This is my favorite Indian restaurant in DC. I like other Indian restaurants in DC, they have great selection of food from various parts of India. We were here to celebrate our friend's 40th birthday party. Most of us in the group were here for the first time. We ordered almost everything on their menu to share and taste everything. Podi masala dosa and cauliflower 65 are my favorites. I liked it so much that I came here the next day during their happy hours. For entrees, definitely recommend the whole tandoori chicken and shrimp kitchdi. Kitchdi is Indian style porridge. It's very delicious as it's made with rice and lentils. I was so full for desserts. I tried a little of kulfi. It was alright. Highly recommend this place. The service was phenomenal. I don't remember the name of our server, but she was so energetic and matched our vibes. Great recommendation for cocktails and food.

    Tapori absolutely nailed it! The modern Indian small plates concept is executed beautifully -- every dish was bursting with bold, vibrant flavors and creative twists. We were celebrating a double birthday, and the experience felt extra special thanks to Nishita. She was energetic, genuinely engaged, and incredibly attentive all evening & catered impeccably to our gluten free request . The sweetest surprise? Desserts and pani puri on the house -- such a thoughtful touch that made our celebration unforgettable. She even got the head chef Baburam to meet us so we could give our candid feedback Amazing food, impeccable service, and the perfect celebratory vibe -- Tapori is officially a favorite!

    Another awesome visit to Tapori. It was a friend's birthday and they kindly brought us a comped dessert with a candle. Service was excellent overall, and we enjoyed all the food. Food: Some veggie patty with dal, don't remember what it was called but it was delicious Dosa: didn't taste but looked good Veggie kulcha: amazing Butter chicken: reported to be amazing Paneer chop: huuuge piece of cheese. Sooo tasty but prob better for sharing! Squash: really unique dish! Delicious! Loved the pumpkin sauce Kulfi dessert: such an unusual thing for me, tasted incredible Galub jamun: small but really delicious Small place, better for small parties and make sure to get a reservation. It was COMPLETELY full.

    FABULOUS. What really blew us away was the dosa AND the galub jalum. The dosa was thin and crispy and its paired with an assortment of rich sauces on the side. I could not tell you what those sauces were, but they were gone in less than 5 minutes that's how delicious they were. The cool lemongrass icecream drizzled with chocolate on top of the rose water soaked cake paired with the crunch of whatever was underneath was something special. Lovely ambiance, incredible service, easy reservations. Honestly an all around great experience.

    The happy hour here was absolutely wonderful! I loved the cauliflower in particular - such a great spice level and so crispy! The dosa was delicious and again had that great crispy/soft contrast. We loved the butter chicken and naan, and we dipped the cheesy kulcha in it as well, which was a winning move. I'm so glad I ordered the ragda pattice. The texture of the patty was so good and the lentils were super filling. The vada pav was good but I just wish it came with a sauce (onions were great though). The kebab was the only item we didn't love taste-wise, but the rest were a home run and we'll be back for sure! I left absolutely stuffed and I thought the prices were more than reasonable for the amount of food I ate (I could have easily brought soke home but I liked it too much). Service was a little slow but everyone was super nice. The decor is gorgeous and I like the dim, cozy vibe. I'm curious about some of the mains but honestly I would come back just for the happy hour!

    As a South Indian, I adore this restaurant. It mixes all of the flavors well. The service is great and creates a very welcoming environment. I have gone alone multiple times for a solo happy hour, a girls night and small group dinner and I'm satisfied every time.

    Tapori delights as usual. We went to the happy hour. Our martini and Manhattans were chilled with liquid nitrogen. Wow. Our bartender/server was like an old friend and he knows everything. He was fantastic. We even got to go back into their kitchen to see their dosa batter mill, which was amazing and allowed us to meet the chefs. The food was top notch as usual, but at happy hour prices so we get to sample all sorts of treats. The restaurant is beautiful as ever and we will be returning again soon.

    A delicious dinner and cocktail spot on H St. my friends and I came here as a walk-in and lucked out with bar seating. We shared the pani puri, chapli kebab, jhol momos, and achari macchi kebab. The pani puri was very flavorful and perfect snack to share. The jhol momos had a delicious broth chili and the wagyu was very well seasoned. If you're a lamb fan, you definitely need to get the chapli kebab which comes on top of saffron naan. My favorite dish was the achari maachi kebab. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the skin was delightfully crispy. It came with pickled vegetables and quinoa (not your average quinoa), which paired so well with the salmon. So glad this new concept from the owners of Daru opened up.

    Had such a good time here! The food is great and the drinks are strong. We got the Dum Biryani (portion size is large, so we had plenty of leftovers), the butter chicken (one of the better ones I've had in DC)! I wish the seating for 2 people was larger but overall had a good time. Service was a bit spotty.

    I went to Tapori and thought it was really great overall. The vibes were awesome from the start. It has a fun, energetic atmosphere that makes the whole experience feel special. Part of the seating is at long shared tables, so we had to sit next to strangers, but it honestly wasn't too bad. It kind of added to the lively feel of the place. The food was good. It was really flavorful and well done, but it's definitely on the expensive side. It's not somewhere I'd go for a casual weeknight dinner. It feels more like a place you go for a fun night out or a special occasion. Overall, it's definitely worth checking out. I wouldn't go all the time, but it's a great spot when you're in the mood for something a little more elevated and fun.

    Amazing Indian food. Thank you EJay Very awesome Indian restaurant near Union Market. Manager Ejay was the man. Great drink selection and the food was totally better than expected. Strong indian flavors and cooked the right way (i.e - the butter chicken was made with tandoori chicken, not the "easier way"). Will certainly come back.

    When I first laid eyes on Chai Pani, which is located right next to Union Market, I knew I had to…read morego. The space is so colorful and vibrant, it beckons you in. We made a lunch reservation on OpenTable and made our way to the highly anticipated Chai Pani. Once we were seated, the waitress greeted us and asked if we had dined at Chai Pani before. Since it was our first time, she gave us an overview and explained that the dishes are great for sharing. They also had some specials - the magic masala tomato chaat and grilled swordfish were being featured. We started with the kale pakora chaat ($15) and SPDP ($13). We loved the kale pakora chaat! My standard for a kale chaat is Rasika's signature palak chaat. Chai Pani's kale chaat holds their own. This chaat is more frittery than loose kale pieces, which made it easier to serve and share with the group. The flavor and texture were on point. The addition of the grapes and melon seeds gave the dish more sweetness, freshness, and great presentation. I would definitely order this again. The SPDP (puffed puris) were yogurt-laden, which made them less appealing. When they were brought to the table, the waiter instructed us that they are meant to be eaten in one bite. I appreciate the instruction, but the puris are a little big (it would be easier to eat in two bites). I didn't really taste the other ingredients other than the puri shell overloaded with yogurt. For the entrees, we ordered the butter chicken ($22) and lamb kala masala ($34). Both came with a small bowl of jeera rice. The lamb shank was excellent! I've had the lamb shank at the Michelin-rated Rania, and Chai Pani's lamb shank is better! The meat was tender and moist. It fell off the bone - always a sign of great cooking. The butter chicken was solid but was not a standout dish. This curry definitely had some heat to it, but the portion felt small for the price. It had a smoky flavor to it and used white breast meat, so it was on the dry side. We also got a side of naan which was pretty standard but great for sopping up the curry. Service was kind and bubbly. It started out strong, but it waned as the meal went on. We were checked on when the starters came out, but not necessarily checked on when the mains came out. She was knowledgeable of the menu and did check if we wanted to order any more drinks. The table was set with a water carafe, so we were able to take care of our own water cup refills. Bottom line - I would come back here again. I think the chaats and street food dishes are where Chai Pani really shines, and the lively, upbeat ambiance adds to the enjoyment. Chai Pani is a lovely addition to the Union Market neighborhood - definitely check it out!

How did they master such perfect bread pudding? Also, why is this dessert SO GOOD?! Best bread pudding and ice cream EVER! And I don't say that often about much bread puddings. The Gulab jamun was also my favorite because it wasn't sweet as the others and I felt so satisfied taking bites of this with the beautiful ice cream they placed on top. The mild was quite mild, I actually think I could handle a slightly spicier level here. I'm happy I tried this place - will come back to try more.

Altogether, I had an amazing meal for under $15, which almost never happens. They also have a heated patio that's really cute, making it a great option even on cooler nights. Service was a little slow with fewer check-ins than we would have liked, but the space is cozy and the overall vibe feels more laid back. Certainly the best meal I've had in DC in years, which includes meals at Jont and P&P in the past several months. Unquestionably the best Indian meal I've had on Earth. The parade of dishes does not have a low point, which is incredible given the range of "mains" from chicken, to sable fish, to lamb taco, to pork cheek. Each dish shows clear French influence - we had most of the five sauces at least once - but with clear, vibrant warmth from Indian spices. Even at places like Eleven Madison and Le Bernardin, there's usually a miss or two. Not last night. Which brings me to the question: why not two Stars? Three? I think some of the answer comes back to ambiance and service. The chef's tasting does not have a dedicated space, flow, or timing. The rhythm of it can be somewhat offbeat with the constant arrival of over-the-top cocktails at the tables around you. And also, it has honestly felt like many of the waitstaff were "in training" on each of our recent visits. I know staff turnover is real and constant, and the staff last night were all perfectly kind, but I think there's a level of consistent experience - "worth a detour" - that has to elevate even perfect food beyond itself to garner the higher levels. Service: Before being sat, being greeted and being sat was slow, there was only us and another group and the venue was not packed or busy. We waited quite a while to be greeted at our table as well aftwr being seated. However, during the experience, service was exceptional. From serve staff taking explaining the dishes to us to the staff wiping up our table between courses. Their attention to detail and promptness was lovely. At one point I had to leave the table for a long period of time so I missed the 5th course. They took it away because it was cold and brought me a fresh hot dish. They were extremely kind and thoughtful of my 9 year old. Misc notes before food review: This is not a kid friendly venue, especially if you have a picky eater or a child that doesn't like to venture out or expand their palate. There are options that kids could like but very limited. They do get to choose a la carte from the regular 4 course meal menu. There is a parking garage across the road that closes at 10. Worst parking and customer service experience of my life. Please dont pay to park here if you can help it. There's if some free or pay to park street parking. They have a 4 course regular menu for $90pp and a 7 course chef tasting menu for $175pp. The chef tasting menu is said to be limited time but looking at the other reviews, it seems like the chef tasting is pretty much the same and one or two courses vary. We were able to do the 7 course experience for $125 due to a promotion going on. Everyone had to do the same experience. Portions are quite small and you may leave not fully satiated. But the experience is lovely. I would say it is a little over priced, but again we pay for the ambience, presentation and experience. Drinks: I really enjoyed the drinks I was able to try. They are an experience when you receive them. The presentation is so lovely. See pictures. I got to try the lychee bomb which was excellent, and my favorite of the drinks I tried. Love the flavor pairings, sweet with some savory hints. Hocus pocus was a bourbon lovers dream. Great pairing of the berry puree and bitters with bourbon. The this is not lassi was really nice with lassi flavors with blackberry hints. And thick as well. The blush and bashful was tart and really unique. I tried it without the foam. And lastly the spring awakening, this was my least favorite. The alcohol pairing with the kiwi cucumber flavors didnt really fit to me. All the drinks definitely could tell had alcohol. Food: We did the non-vegetarian tasting with 7 courses. They do have a vegetarian tasting as well. The presentation of all the food was pretty lovely and I quite enjoyed that aspect. The sabudana vada and chana masala panisse was lovely, super flavorful and I would say my #2 for the night. Perfect start. First course - The tuna tartar pani puri was really nice and unique. I would never have thought to pair tuna with pani puri but it really worked. My #4 for the night. Second course - Hokkaido scallop... it was perfect. The hollandaise was so flavorful but did not over power the jumbo scallops natural taste. And the scallop wasnt over cooked. This is a scallop lovers dream. My #1 for the night. Third course - quail egg kaftan, this was a dense kofta, which i appreciated. Fourth course - black cod. It initially appeared undercooked and thought it would have a fishy smell and taste. Pleasantly surprised with the delicate way it was prepared yet no fishy taste or smell. Fifth course - lamb seekh kabob - this was a hand held one, which I enjoyed. All the flavors in one bite really brought thr flavors out. However this was probably my least favorite of the dishes. Sixth - pork cheeks vindaloo was really nice. Very tender and moist and rhe sauce was quite nice. Pre dessert was exquisite. It was so refreshing, cleansing, cool, and tart. It made my mouth water for dessert. Dessert we had the chocolate tart which was nice but nothing special that I noted. The chocolate and the crunch went nicely together. However if I had to choose I would go with the kesari mango dessert. My 9 year old waa able to do a la cart from the 4 course meal choices. The beef short rib was amazing! So tender, so we'll cooked, so flavorful I throughly enjoyed it. My #3 for the night. Garlic naan was soft and not to burnt. And her dessert, the kesari mango was super delicious especially the sesame brittle. Id love to try this one again. I probably wouldn't come here again unless someone specifically requested to come here. But overall my experience was a nice one. It was nice to try this once.
